The Recording Academy Announces More Updated Rules For Grammy Awards

The Recording Academy has released the latest Grammy Awards Rules and Guidelines, which reflect changes for next year’s 64th Annual Grammy Awards. The news of the new rule amendments come just after the Academy announced several significant changes to its nomination process, including the elimination of nominations review committees in general and genre fields.

Included in the new amendments are a few changes that apply to the Album Of The Year Category. The new amendment states that all credited artists, songwriters, producers, recording engineers, mixers, and mastering engineers are eligible to be Grammy nominees and recipients in the Album Of The Year category. Previously, contributors were required to be credited with at least 33% or more to be eligible.

Additionally, an album must also contain over 75% of newly recorded (within five years of the release date), previously unreleased recordings to be eligible for Grammy consideration, as opposed to the current eligibility rule of 50%. Best Compilation Soundtrack, Best Historical Album, Best Immersive Audio Album, Best Recording Package, Best Special Package, and Best Album Notes will accept albums of recordings that are not newly recorded, however. This eligibility rule goes into effect for the 65th Annual Grammy Awards taking place in 2023, unlike all of the other updated rules that were announced, which will go into effect for the upcoming 64th annual Grammy Awards, set for April 3, 2022.

“Our peer-driven awards process is all about engagement, and nothing is more invigorating than seeing our members take part in submitting proposals to move the Academy forward,” says Chair & Interim President/CEO of the Recording Academy Harvey Mason Jr. “We’re proud to work alongside today’s music creators to ensure their vision for the music industry is reflected in all that we do, and to continue our commitment to transparency by making these updates readily available to anyone that wishes to submit their art for Grammy recognition.”

Other rule amendments include the Best Dance Recording category being renamed to Best Dance/Electronic Recording; a second optional Technical Grammy Award being added and specifically reserved for a company, organization or institution who has made groundbreaking and influential contributions to the recording field; and academy members or their designated publicists now being restricted to FYC (for your consideration) emails, social media posts and physical mailings that promote only their own recordings, prohibiting lobbying on behalf of other members.

The full list of rule amendments for the 64th Grammy Awards can be found here.

Veteran Songwriter Glenn Douglas Tubb Passes

Hit country songwriter Glenn Douglas Tubb died in Nashville on Saturday (May 22) at age 85.

Tubb was active for seven decades on the Nashville music scene, co-writing hits for Johnny Cash, George Jones & Tammy Wynette, Webb Pierce and The Wilburn Brothers, among others. His classic “Skip a Rope” is the current single by Marty Stuart.

“Two Story House” was a hit duet for George Jones & Tammy Wynette in 1980. Tubb co-wrote
it with Wynette and David Lindsey. The songwriter was also a recording artist.

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Glenn Douglas Tubb was the nephew of Country Music Hall of Fame member Ernest Tubb (1914- 1984) and the cousin of Grand Ole Opry star Justin Tubb (1935-1998).

His first big songwriting success was 1957’s “Home of the Blues,” co-written with Vic McAlpin and sung by Johnny Cash. In 1959, Ernest Tubb had a hit with his nephew’s song “Next Time.”

Webb Pierce scored a top-10 hit with Glenn Douglas Tubb’s “Sweet Lips” (1961). The Wilburn Brothers did the same with “Tell Her So” (1963).

In 1967, Tubb and Jack Moran co-wrote the social-commentary song “Skip a Rope.” It became a No. 1 country smash for Henson Cargill the following year and crossed over to become a pop hit as well. The song was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1969.

“Skip a Rope” has since been recorded by dozens of others, including Jimmy Dean, B.J. Thomas, Conway Twitty, Autry Inman, Lynn Anderson, The Harden Trio, Gene Vincent, George Jones, Joe Tex, Patti Page, Jack Reno, Rex Allen, Lawrence Reynolds, The Jordanaires, Bobby Bare, The Brothers Four and The Kentucky HeadHunters.

Cash returned to Tubb’s song catalog to record the gospel tune “I Talk to Jesus Every Day” in 1971.

The songwriter’s own recording career included stints with the Dot, Decca, Mercury and MGM labels, sometimes billed as “Glenn Douglas” or “Doug Tubb.” His 1958 LP was titled Heartbreak Alley. Later albums included New Country Psalms, Half and Half, Glenn Douglas, Let Me Cry Alone, Gonna Make My Mark and Aged to Perfection. He appeared on the Opry and on The Ozark Jubilee network TV series.

Tubb toured with Cash, Jones, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Marty Robbins and others. He continued to write and perform until the time of his death, frequently appearing as the host of the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree at the Texas Troubadour Theater near the Opryland Hotel & Resort.

He also sang duets with his wife, Dottie Snow, the daughter of Grand Ole Opry stars Radio Dot & Smokey Swann. The two are ministers. Their weekly service called “The Kitchen Tabernacle” was posted on Facebook Live and Periscope each Sunday afternoon.

At the time of his death, the songwriter was working on a documentary film about his life.

Glenn Douglas Tubb arrangements are being handled by Roesch-Patton Funeral Home & Woodlawn Memorial Park. No services will be held at this time.

Songwriter Ben Glover Earns 40th Career No. 1

Ben Glover

Lauded songwriter and producer Ben Glover has achieved his 40th No. 1 career single. Hitting this career accolade with Crowder‘s “Good God Almighty,” this is Glover’s second No. 1 with Crowder, after hitting the chart pinnacle for the first time with him in 2014 with “Come As You Are.”

Over twenty years after moving to Nashville to pursue music, Glover, who writes for Capitol CMG Publishing, is both a Grammy award-winning songwriter and GMA Dove award winner, as well as an NSAI awards recipient and ASCAP’s Christian Songwriter of the Year for five years since 2010. Co-writing MercyMe’s No. 1 “Even If,” additional chart-topping hits from Glover include songs recorded by award-winning artists Mandisa, Chris Tomlin, and for King & Country. With more than 400 songs penned to his name, other artists who have recorded his songs are The Backstreet Boys, Amy Grant & James Taylor, Joy Williams, NF, Thompson Square, Trace Adkins, Marc Broussard, and Clay Walker, to name a few.

Glover also co-wrote “Hard To Love” with country artist Lee Brice, which began a creative relationship between the two, eventually leading Glover to produce Lee’s latest album, Hey World.

“I came to Nashville over twenty years ago, had a five-minute artist career, and got dropped a couple of times early on,” Glover shares. “If you’d have told me then that I would someday be celebrating 40 No. 1 songs, I’d have thought you were either crazy or had some magic elixir that would allow me to live 500 years so I’d have enough time to do it. I’m just grateful I’ve had so many opportunities through the years to get to this place. I couldn’t have accomplished this sort of thing without the artists, producers, and writers willing to work with me and the champions who went to bat for me to convince all those people it would be worth it.”

“We couldn’t be more proud of our long relationship with Ben and getting to celebrate this incredible and unprecedented milestone with him,” says Brad O’Donnell, co-president of Capitol CMG. “Ben has always had an ability to draw out an artist’s unique voice and help them write their best songs. And now with ‘Good God Almighty,’ he’s done it again.”

Glover resides in Brentwood, Tennessee with his wife and two children.
