Chris Stapleton Tops The CountryBreakout Radio Chart

Monument’s Alex Hall Welcomes Brad Paisley, Tenille Townes, Vince Gill, Kassi Ashton For ‘Six Strings’ EP [Interview]

Monument Records artist Alex Hall was barely in kindergarten when he fell in love with music—specifically, guitar.

The Gainesville, Georgia, native received his first acoustic guitar at age 5, though when his parents took him to his first lesson, the experience derailed his guitar-playing ambitions for several years.

“They told my parents, ‘Well he doesn’t know how to read and we can’t teach him to play guitar if he can’t read.’ That just discouraged me and I didn’t touch guitar again until I was about 13. I literally put it in a closet and wouldn’t touch it. But I loved to sing, so I would go to just about any karaoke place that would let me in, even at 5 or 6 years old. Even then, I would memorize every word to pretty much every Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Skynyrd or Cash song.”

By his teens, he grew interested in writing songs and knew if he wanted to grow musically, he’d have to dust off that old guitar in the closet. He started by learning every song on an Elvis greatest hits compilation. By 15, he was playing shows anywhere he could, and by the time he was a junior in high school, he was doing nearly 150 shows each year. A booking agent saw one of those shows and began helping him get bigger gigs (Hall is now signed with Paradigm for booking).

“I was playing six nights a week, whether it was an acoustic show or opening up for another artist. Especially towards the weekends, playing college bars, I would get maybe an hour or two of sleep and roll into school, probably still smelling like cigarettes from whatever bar I was playing, but I did graduate,” he says with a chuckle. “I missed out on a lot of normal teenage stuff like going to football games, but I was doing exactly what I wanted to do—play guitar, sing and write music.”

Hall moved to Nashville less than a year after graduating high school, focused on writing songs and found kindred musical spirits in writer/producers Pete Good and AJ Babcock.

“Moving here, I always felt like I was trying to find my crew of people to write with. I’ve written with so many people and they’re all incredible writers but I just never found someone that I connected with like I’ve connected with Pete and AJ and I think it’s just the trust that I have for them and that they have for me. And I know that if I give them my best title, or vice versa, that we’re going to do the best job that we possibly can.”

One of their collaborations, “Other End of the Phone,” led to a deal with Monument Records, led by Shane McAnally and Jason Owen. Now Hall is putting his shredding skills and songwriting acumen front and center on his EP, Six Strings—and he’s welcomed artists including Brad Paisley, Vince Gill, Brothers Osborne’s John Osborne, Old Dominion’s Brad Tursi and more to be part of it. The project was produced by Hall, Good, and Babcock, and is set to release early next year.

“When a new artist puts out a debut EP like Six Strings, you know to pay attention,” said Monument co-president McAnally. “Alex’s stand-out vocals, his songwriting, and his incredible musicianship create the whole package, and are the reason we signed him the day we met him. It’s so telling that these legendary, and respected, artists would join him in making music together for a debut EP. It just shows that Alex Hall is offering something unique, at a time when there is so much of the same.”

Hall hadn’t intended to put out a collaborative project this year—he hadn’t planned to put out an EP at all. But like most artists, Hall’s heavy touring slate was halted once the pandemic hit. Hall was on a plane en route to London’s C2C Festival when the borders were closed in March.

“We got grounded in D.C. and turned around. So what was supposed to be a big touring year turned out to be a sitting-at-home all year kind of thing” Hall says.

Originally, the project was going to be a stripped down, acoustic album, based around his guitar work, but that idea expanded into an opportunity to bring in several of Hall’s musical heroes.

“I grew up in a time where the radio was Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Vince, Steve Wariner and all those great guitar players. We were like, ‘Well, if I’m going to ask Brad Paisley or John Osborne to be part of this, we’ve got to put an electric guitar in their hands.’”

Good purchased a studio in Nashville’s Berry Hill area right as the pandemic hit. Babcock and Hall write at the same publishing company, and Babcock also plays bass all over the album, while Good engineered the project. Tursi, Kassi Ashton and Tenille Townes each came into the studio to record their tracks, while Paisley, Gill and Osborne recorded in their home studios.

One of the first artists they thought of for the project was Gill, who contributes guitar work and vocals to “Never Seen The World.”

“Honestly, all my co-producers and I were all in tears listening to it, because it’s Vince Gill. He’s got such an incredible voice and his guitar work is amazing. And that song is special for me and my fiancée. The first few times we were going back to Georgia, and just seeing where I grew up through her eyes and finding a new love for that in a roundabout way.”

“Other End of the Phone” gets a guest appearance from Old Dominion’s Tursi. Hall co-wrote the stunner “Heart Shut” with Townes, who also provides vocals and guitar work to the track. They played “Heart Shut” together for the first time at Nashville’s Bluebird Café at Townes’ EP release party.

“Tenille and I are dear friends and this was the first song we ever wrote together,” Hall says. “We’ve been fans of each other’s music and finally got a co-write on the books. I wanted to write a duet because I am such a big fan of hers. She came in and did two takes on her guitar, top to bottom, and just absolutely crushed it,” he recalls of the recording session. “We played that for the very first time and everyone just went nuts and there was just something magical about it and the guitar playing and our voices and her style of playing and everything, too. And so it honestly had a lot to do with the way that we recorded this whole project, just very stripped down and bare bones and not overly slick but still hopefully slick enough to catch people’s attention.”

Ashton co-wrote and contributed vocals to “Runs In The Family,” an intensely personal song for Hall.

“That was one that I struggled with at first because this is a guitar-featuring project, but this song is so personal to both of us, and no one knows how to use their voice like an instrument the way Kassi does.”

Paisley contributed harmonies and guitar to “Last One To Leave.”

“It’s exactly what I love about a classic country song, and it feels like it meets that modern feel on the production side of it,” Hall says. “It just felt very fitting to have him. And that was a huge long shot, obviously, asking Brad Paisley to be on my record. But just getting to just duel out on guitars with Brad Paisley is just something I never thought I would ever be able to do.

“I think this is a project that really shows who I am and what I have to say. I’ve never had a body of music push me harder to be better as a guitar player or a singer or anything. And it definitely stretched me and I’m thankful for it because I think I’m a better artist, guitar player and songwriter for it.”

Capitol Music Group’s Steve Barnett To Retire, Jeff Vaughn And Michelle Jubelirer To Lead Company

Steve Barnett. Photo: Lester Cohen

Capitol Music Group Chairman & CEO Steve Barnett has announced he is stepping down and will retire on Dec. 31, 2020, capping a 50-year career in the music business, including eight years at the helm of CMG.

Barnett announced his long-planned decision to the company Thursday morning with Universal Group Chairman & CEO Sir Lucian Grainge. The two also announced the promotions of Jeff Vaughn and Michelle Jubelirer to serve as CMG’s next leaders. Vaughn, currently President of Capitol Records, will become CMG Chairman and CEO, and current CMG COO Jubelirer will serve as CMG’s President and COO.

“This has been an incredible journey, and I’ve been tremendously fortunate to work with such amazing people along the way,” said Barnett. “I am indebted to Lucian for his unwavering belief in me and for his unreserved support for our efforts these entire eight years. To say that I will always be grateful to him is truly an understatement. Michelle was the first to join me at CMG and has been my partner in revitalizing the company and creating an environment where artists and our employees could thrive. From the moment Jeff joined us, I knew he’d quickly make his mark on Capitol, and I’m certain that he and Michelle are the perfect team to guide CMG into the future. My appreciation extends to Boyd Muir and my many friends at UMG who have been there for me and my team these past eight years. I thank you all.”

Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, said, “When we acquired EMI, Capitol was a gem that had lost its luster. Under Steve’s leadership, Capitol has been rebuilt into one of music’s greatest homes for artist and employee talent. It’s a fitting crown to Steve’s incredible five-decade career. To assure that Capitol’s next chapter is equally successful, we have appointed two gifted executives to lead the company . On behalf of the entire UMG family, I congratulate Jeff and Michelle on their well-deserved promotions and I especially want to thank Steve for making Capitol shine bright once again and wishing him a wonderful retirement with Nancy and the children.”

Barnett was named to his post by Grainge in November 2012. The pair formulated a roadmap for the newly-minted Capitol Music Group that centered on a multi-label approach—consisting of Capitol Records, Motown Records, Astralwerks, Capitol Christian Music Group (CCMG), Blue Note Records and Caroline—that became integral to the company’s revitalization. Barnett and Grainge relocated the company’s headquarters from New York back to its historic Hollywood home, and completed a multi-year renovation of its iconic Capitol Tower and historic Capitol Studios, in advance of the company’s 75th anniversary celebration in 2017.

Under Barnett’s leadership, CMG’s focus on artist development resulted in 32 breakout artists that have generated 93 million global and 60 million U.S. adjusted albums to date. During Barnett’s tenure, the company introduced such recently minted superstars as Sam Smith, Halsey, Lewis Capaldi, NF, Niall Horan, Queen Naija, Troye Sivan, Hillsong United and Maggie Rogers to the cultural landscape, resulting in some of the most successful releases of this decade.

‘American Masters-Charley Pride: I’m Just Me’ Airs Tonight

Charley Pride

American Masters – Charley Pride: I’m Just Me is set to air on NPT this week beginning tonight (Nov. 5) at 8 p.m. CT and 11 p.m. CT. The show will also air Monday, Nov. 9 at 8 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m., and on Dec. 5 at 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. CT.

The show traces Pride’s life journey from his humble beginnings as a sharecropper’s son on a cotton farm in segregated Sledge, Mississippi to his career as a Negro League baseball player and his meteoric rise as a trailblazing country superstar. The new documentary spotlights how Pride’s love for music led him from the Delta to a larger, grander world. In the 1940s, Pride grew up listening to and emulating Grand Ole Opry stars like Ernest Tubb and Roy Acuff. The singer arrived in Nashville in 1963 while the city roiled with sit-ins and racial violence. But with boldness, perseverance, and talent, he managed to achieve a legacy of hit singles, a Recording Academy “Lifetime Achievement Award” and a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

The film also features interviews with Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, and Marty Stuart, and includes several on-camera conversations between Pride and special guests, including Rozene Pride (his wife of 61 years), Willie Nelson, and other fellow musicians. It also includes many of Pride’s classic hits, along with more modern cuts like “Standing In My Way,” from his latest album Music In My Heart, released in 2017.

“At a time when African-American singers were more notable for R&B hits, Charley Pride followed his passion for country music, overcoming obstacles through determination and raw talent to make a lasting impact on the genre and create a legacy that continues today,” said Michael Kantor, executive producer of American Masters. “We are honored to share the inspiring, and largely untold, story of this barrier-breaking performer with viewers nationwide.”

Kelley Purcell has been named Vice President of Membership & Industry Relations for the Recording Academy, effective immediately.

The appointment follows the Recording Academy’s restructure, which aims to streamline the organization and sharpen focus on its service to music. Purcell will report to Chief Industry Officer Ruby Marchand, and be responsible for overseeing all aspects of membership outreach, peer review, member account services, and the Academy’s Chapter systems, including regional and local teams, Chapter events and programming, and all facets of Chapter service.

Purcell joined the Recording Academy as the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Chapter in 2013. She later transitioned to Senior Director of Member Outreach, leading industry outreach efforts across the Membership & Industry Relations department. During her tenure, she project managed a cross-department team of IT, Digital Media and Communications colleagues over a two-year period and successfully implemented historic changes to the Academy’s membership systems. She also led the recruitment efforts to diversify Academy membership and was the liaison to the Academy’s first-ever Peer Review Panel, responsible for training this body and serving as its point person.

Prior to her time at the Recording Academy, Purcell served as the executive director of Harvardwood, a global nonprofit organization for members of the Harvard University community who believe in the purpose and power of the arts. She also held past roles at Island Def Jam Music Group, Monitor Deloitte and Goldstar and received a cum laude bachelors degree in economics at Harvard University.

“We are pleased to have Kelley as our Vice President of Membership & Industry Relations,” said Marchand. “Her expertise and history of being a driving force within the Membership & Industry Relations department make her a great asset to this organization. This is yet another step towards the Academy’s transformational commitment as we strive for greater inclusivity and work to ensure our membership reflects the diverse individuals who make up our music community.”

“I’m extremely passionate about the work I’ve done at the Academy over the past seven years and I’m thrilled to continue focusing my efforts on building a diverse membership body that feels heard, supported and represented,” said Purcell. “It’s important that our members understand that they have the power to influence and shape the future of the music industry, whether that’s through advocacy efforts, voting in the Grammy Awards process, or beyond. I’m excited to take on this elevated role and build upon the work the Recording Academy has already done to ensure our members and our industry thrive.”

DISClaimer Singles Reviews: Kip Moore, Darius Rucker, Florida Georgia Line, And More

The country industry is chugging into the fall with a full slate of star releases.

For your listening pleasure today, we have offerings from Kip Moore, Darius Rucker, FGL, Miranda Lambert and Eric Church. We don’t have Dan + Shay or Lee Brice, but we do have their siblings.

The Disc of the Day belongs to Tyler Braden. I have loved everything he’s put out so far, but nothing so much as “Secret.” Play and believe.

The DisCovery Award goes to Miranda’s duet partner, Luke Dick. The guy is super gifted as a songwriter, and his personality as a record maker is also abundant.

TYLER BRADEN/“Secret”
Writers: Tyler Braden; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: Warner Nashville
-Alcoholism, PTSD, pregnancy, heartache and misery can’t hide in a small town, where everyone knows each others’ “secrets.” Powerfully written and sung with gut-punch authority, this is the kind of thing that makes stars out of mortals. I remain an enormous fan of this newcomer.

KIP MOORE/”Don’t Go Changing”
Writers: Blair Daly/Westin Davis/Kip Moore; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: Mercury Nashville
-This mid-tempo rocker looks at a crazy world and asks love to remain something stable. Moore attacks it with his trademark vocal urgency while guitars snarl. The song’s gritty video is dedicated to all the live-venue owners who are suffering right now.

KAREN WALDRUP/”I Go By Jane Doe”
Writers: Karen Waldrup/Brandon Darcy/Dean Kreseki; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: KW
-The lady is out for a roaring good time with a take-no-prisoners attitude. When she cuts loose, she makes sure she is among strangers. She’s anonymous, and likes it that way. So there.

BILL ANDERSON/”It’s a Good Day to Have a Good Day”
Writers: Bill Anderson; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: TWI
-The production is a little thin sounding, but the upbeat rhythm matches the message perfectly. We can certainly use this sentiment these days. And the Country Music Hall of Famer is still whisperin’ as effectively as ever. He’s a treasure, for sure.

ERIC CHURCH/”Through My Ray-Bans”
Writers: Eric Church/Luke Laird/Barry Dean; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: EMI
-Pulsating and inspirational, this heart-touching lyric poem reaches out to the crowds he used to see beyond the footlights. Eric asks us to have faith and to hold each other in solidarity. I’m with you, bro.

JON LANGSTON/”Happy Ever After”
Writers: Blake Bollinger/Jon Langston/Brent Anderson; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: EMI/32 Bridge
-Fun, drawling and utterly countrified. She dumps the hillbilly for a trust-fund dude. So the redneck heads to a honky-tonk, downs some cold ones, plays Hank on the jukebox and meets a babe. Therefore, he’s “Happy Ever After….Her.”

NELLY & FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE/”Lil Bit”
Writers: none listed; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: Columbia
-This is a taste of Nelly’s forthcoming “country influenced” EP The Heartland. The St.Louis rapper previously collaborated with FGL on a remix of “Cruise,” featured Tim McGraw on his hit “Over and Over” and recorded his own take on Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man.” This catchy jam is his best attempt yet to fuse twang with dope beats.

LEWIS BRICE/“Young”
Writers: Lewis Brice/Rozes/Joshua Logan Tangney; Publisher: none listed; Producer: Lewis Brice, Lee Brice & Ben Simonetti; Label: Pump House
-It’s a nostalgic look at what it was like to be youthful and carefree. Brice’s vocal has lots of warmth and personality. The production is too thickly processed.

LUKE DICK & MIRANDA LAMBERT/“Polyester”
Writers: Luke Dick/Chris Dubois; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: INgrooves
-I have always dug him as a songwriter. Who knew he was such a charming singer? His soft/fuzzy semi-spoken rasp swaps verses with Miranda’s bell-clear honky-tonk soprano while a spare little combo romps along. Luke’s documentary film that contains this on its soundtrack sounds fascinating.

TY HERNDON & KRISTIN CHENOWETH/”Orphans of God”
Writers: Joel Lindsey/Twila LaBar; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: TH
-This was originally sung by the CCM group Avalon. This duet by country hit maker Herndon and Broadway star Chenoweth drives home its message that we are equal and loved in His eyes. The over-the-top production is power-ballad pop all the way, complete with heavenly choir.

GABRIELLE MOONEY/”Come On In”
Writers: Kelly Johnson/Gabrielle Mooney/Jenna Johnson/Benjamin Joel Johnson; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: GM
-She wants her romantic partner to know who she is, a country gal. The voice has a pert quality with just a little tangy taste. Gabby is the older sister of the prodigiously gifted Shay Mooney, so I guess talent runs in the family.

DARIUS RUCKER/“Beers and Sunshine”
Writers: Darius Rucker/John Thomas Harding/Josh Osborne/Ross Copperman; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: Capitol Nashville
-What a cute line: “The only B.S. I need is Beers & Sunshine.” As usual, Rucker espouses easy-going good times and romance. No wonder radio loves him so.
