TuneCore, Facebook Launch New Independent Artist Program

Leading independent DIY digital music company TuneCore has partnered with Facebook for the social media platform’s new Independent Artist Program.

Through TuneCore, owned by leading global digital music distributor Believe, independent artists will be able to distribute their music on Facebook and Instagram for free. This partnership will offer artists more opportunities to connect with fans around the world. Through the program, artists who distribute their music through the Independent Artist Program via TuneCore will also have access to data and insights offered by TuneCore.

“These days we are seeing a leveling of the playing field as discovery is happening via social media and no longer solely dependent on industry executives and DJs handpicking hits,” says Co-Head and Chief Revenue Officer of TuneCore Andreea Gleeson. “With the popularity of short form videos, Facebook Stories, and Instagram Reels are two important platforms on which fans are finding songs and artists, with careers being made when songs go viral. The Facebook Independent Artist Program provides an even greater gateway for indie artists from around the world to be heard.”

To participate in the Independent Artist Program, independent artists must sign up with TuneCore and will then be able to distribute their music everywhere Facebook offers a music library, free of charge, including in Stories and Reels. Artists will be able to upload their music to TuneCore via a music delivery process and will get paid every time their music is used to create content across Facebook and Instagram products.

“Facebook is proud to make it easier for independent artists and creators to reach new audiences on our platform and build community through music. When joining our Independent Artist Program, creators are backed by our outstanding distribution partners, allowing them to get their music in front of more people, across all of our apps,” says Chris Papaleo, Music Business Development manager for Facebook.

“Beth (my wife) and I attended the grand opening of the Gibson Garage this week and WOW!” says Mike Voltz, Gibson Brands recently retired director of Research & Development, a 36-year veteran employee of the company. “In addition to being one of the finest retail experiences I have ever had, the Gibson Garage provides an amazing performance venue for artists and a great hang for the rest of us. The display of exceptional historical instruments brings true significance to all of the new guitars, amps, monitors and apparel for sale. As a builder, I especially appreciate the thought and care that went into creating the perfect environmental protection for the guitars from the acoustic salon to the Custom Shop Murphy Lab. The Garage reflects where Gibson is headed and it’s great!”

Taylor Swift Announces Second Re-Recorded Album Will Be ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’

Taylor Swift. Photo: Beth Garrabrant

Taylor Swift has announced that the next phase of her re-release project will be Red (Taylor’s Version). The newest album will be available everywhere on Nov. 19.

“In the land of heartbreak, moments of strength, independence, and devil-may-care rebellion are intricately woven together with grief, paralyzing vulnerability and hopelessness. Imagining your future might always take you on a detour back to the past. And this is all to say, that the next album I’ll be releasing is my version of Red,” she announced via social media.

Red, Swift’s Grammy-nominated and award-winning album, was originally released in 2012 and included a plethora of hit singles for the artist, including “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “I Knew You Were Trouble,” “22,” “Everything Has Changed” with Ed Sheeran, the album’s title track “Red,” and fan-favorite “All Too Well.” After its release in October of 2012, the project spent seven weeks at the top of the Billboard 200, making Swift the first female artist—and the second act since the Beatles—to have three consecutive albums each spend at least six weeks at No. 1. Red, Swift’s fourth studio album, was also certified 7x Platinum.

With such an impressive list of accolades associated with the original album, Swift will be taking on quite a feat as she reimagines the effort. This will be the second re-release Swift will deliver, after having released Fearless (Taylor’s Version) in April. Fearless (Taylor’s Version) featured re-recorded versions of all 19 tracks from the 2008 edition of Fearless, in addition to Swift’s 2010 single “Today Was a Fairytale,” and six additional songs not included on the original album. The re-recorded version of Fearless reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, and became the first re-recorded album to ever do so.

“Like trying on pieces of a new life, I went into the studio and experimented with different sounds and collaborators,” Swift writes of Red (Taylor’s Version). “And I’m not sure if it was pouring my thoughts into this album, hearing thousands of your voices sing the lyrics back to me in passionate solidarity, or if it was simply time, but something was healed along the way.”

Swift also told fans that Red (Taylor’s Version) will include 30 tracks, all of which were meant to go on the original project.

With more information and details to follow as November nears, pre-orders for Red (Taylor’s Version) are available now.

Americana Music Association Establishes Inclusivity Advisory Committee

The Americana Music Association has formed a committee to address issues of inclusivity, representation and identity within the Americana community.

The new committee’s members include artists Brandi Carlile, Leyla McCalla, Allison Russell, in addition to Garth Fundis (Producer, President of the Americana Music Association Board of Directors), Courtney Gregg (Carnival Music), David Macias (Thirty Tigers), Jacquelyn Marushka (Marushka Media), Shannon Sanders (BMI/Producer) and Caroline Randall Williams (Author/Activist/Teacher), plus Americana Music Association Executive Director Jed Hilly and Manager of Marketing and Member Relations Anna Lee Williams, who serve as facilitators.

The association has also shared its new identity statement across all platforms which proudly says, “All Colors. All Genders. All Abilities. All Sizes. All Orientations. All Identities. All Americana.” In line with this statement, the committee was established to declare the 21-year-old association’s ongoing commitment to representation in the Americana community to ensure a welcoming space for all identities as well as to educate on the rich and diverse history of American roots music.

“This committee was formed as an imperfect response to a heard need,” says Hilly. “It is a group that was established with people who have the insight and rapport to meet this moment.”

The association also plans to bring important conversations in person to attendees this September in the form of conference panels during its 21st annual AMERICANAFEST in Nashville. Curated by committee members, a variety of this year’s sessions will celebrate the legacies and cultural impact of Black, Hispanic/Latine* and LGBTQ+ communities within Americana. The association will curate additional panels with under-celebrated communities into the fall following the conference.
