Mechanical Licensing Collective Names Kris Ahrend As CEO

Kris Ahrend.

The Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) has named industry executive Kris Ahrend as the organization’s CEO. Nashville-based Ahrend will begin his tenure with the MLC, effective immediately. According to a spokesperson for the organization, one of Ahrend’s first tasks will include finalizing the official location for the MLC.

MLC Board Chair Alisa Coleman said, “Kris was selected by our Board after a months-long competitive process; both his background and vision stood out amongst many qualified candidates. The unique combination of his experience with license administration, his tenure as a business and legal affairs executive in the music industry, and his most recent involvement in leading the design and operation of a large client service organization makes him well-suited to operate the MLC. He has spent his career making sure artists and songwriters get paid, and the Board is thrilled to have found someone whose passion and expertise align so well with the mission of the MLC.”

Ahrend added, “Nothing could be more exciting than leading a company that helps ensure songwriters, composers, lyricists, and music publishers receive the money they deserve from digital service providers and offers them new tools to take control of their careers. We will provide songwriters and publishers unprecedented transparency, rights, and the ability to claim what is theirs. Through the MLC, we are committed to improving the system for everyone.”

A graduate of Binghamton University and the Washington & Lee School of Law, Ahrend worked as a law clerk for the Western District of the Virginia District Court and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals before joining the Intellectual Property & Litigation Group of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, LLP in New York. Ahrend began his career in the music industry working in the Law Department at Sony Music, where he provided legal services to all of Sony’s US divisions, including its publishing company. He subsequently worked in the business and legal affairs department at Sony BMG Music Entertainment before accepting a senior executive role at Rhino Entertainment.

In 2013, Ahrend left Rhino to assume a senior executive role within Warner Music Group, where he led a large legal, financial, and administrative shared services organization that he helped to create. In 2016, Ahrend was promoted to President of U.S. Shared Services and tapped to lead the development and launch of Warner Music’s new Center of Excellence for Shared Services in Nashville, where he oversaw the operations of fifteen different functional teams providing a variety of administrative, financial, and legal services to Warner Music’s U.S.-based publishing teams, record labels, and corporate divisions.

He serves on the boards of the Nashville Chamber of Commerce and the Nashville Downtown Partnership, and is a member of the Music City Music Council.

The Mechanical Licensing Collective was designated by the United States Copyright Office, and created by U.S. music publishers and songwriters (backed by the National Music Publishers’ Association, the Nashville Songwriters Association International and the Songwriters of North America), as a new entity to license and administer rights under the Music Modernization Act which was signed into law in 2018. The law ensures that the mechanical rights of songwriters and music publishers are properly licensed and royalties fully paid by digital services, and it improves how those royalty rates are determined. It also establishes a publicly accessible mechanical rights database to ensure accurate, transparent copyright ownership information.

Bobby Bones and The Raging Idiots held their 5th annual Million Dollar Show last night (Jan. 13), benefiting St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, at the Ryman Auditorium. Bones and the band served as the host for the evening, ushering out performers and surprise guests all night.

The event brought in more than $267,000.00 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, helping to bring Bones’ and The Bobby Bones Show‘s total for the cause to over $14 million.

The first performer to take the stage was Brett Young, who was met with a thunderous applause. He sang his recent single “Catch,” and invited couples to slow dance to his ‘career-making song,’ “In Case You Didn’t Know.” BBR’s Lainey Wilson followed Young with a spirited cover of Queen’s “Fat Bottomed Girls,” as well as her first single, “Dirty Looks.” The appearance was her first time playing the Ryman stage.

Another BBR act, King Calaway, were up next. The six-member band sang their own “No Matter What” and covered the Eagles’ “Take It Easy.”

Colbie Caillat then appeared onstage to sing her monster 2007-hit, “Bubbly,” before inviting her Gone West band-mates Justin Young, Jason Reeves, and Nelly Joy up to sing “Gone West,” which turned out to be one of the best performances of the evening.

The next performer, a surprise, was Sawyer Brown. They sang “Six Days on the Road” and “Some Girls Do,” and lead singer Mark Miller showed off his dance moves.

For one of the most exciting moments of the night, Brooks & Dunn appeared mid-way through the evening to a thrilled Ryman crowd on their feet. They performed “My Maria,” “Boot Scootin’ Boogie,” and “Neon Moon.” The whole crowd grinned ear to ear, sang every word and never left their feet.

The next surprise of the evening came when Old Dominion stepped on stage. “We didn’t know we were going to have to follow Brooks & Dunn,” lead singer Matt Ramsey said.

The recently signed Heath Sanders played his first performance at the Ryman Auditorium, and even received a standing ovation for his cover of Journey’s “Faithfully.”

Lindsay Ell made a surprise appearance, singing her new single “I Don’t Love You.” She then joined another surprise guest, Foreigner, for their hit “I Want To Know What Love Is.”

The crowd roared when Kane Brown took the stage with his guitarist and violinist. He sang two of his sweet songs, “Good As You” and “Homesick,” which he dedicated to the military.

The last surprise of the evening came when Sam Hunt joined Bones on-stage to perform his recent single, “Kinfolks,” as well as “Body Like A Back Road.” Hunt said that he was already planning to be at the show, so he was delighted to perform.

On The Row: Mitch Rossell

Mitch Rossell. Photo: Haley Crow/MusicRow

Mitch Rossell has turned heads in Nashville as the songwriter behind hits including Garth Brooks’ “Ask Me How I Know,” which topped the Billboard Country Airplay chart and Mediabase/Country Aircheck chart in 2017. For Rossell, the sole writer on “Ask Me How I Know,” the chart-topper is also a testament to staying true to his own artistry.

“When I came to town the whole bro-country thing was starting to be really big and I grew up on the Garth and ‘90s country stuff. What I was doing wasn’t popular at the time. I kept doing it for a few years, had no traction,” Rossell recalls of his early days in Nashville.

When Brooks put out the word to Nashville publishers and songwriters that he was looking for songs to include on his 2014 album Man Against The Machine, Rossell pitched the legendary entertainer a few songs.

“I sent a cold pitch email through the email address he had distributed around town to publishers. He liked them and we started hanging out and writing a little bit,” Rossell said.

Though none of the songs Rossell pitched at the time made the Man Against The Machine album, the friendship was an encouragement. Two years later, Rossell penned “Ask Me How I Know,” and sent it to Brooks for feedback.

“I was cutting my own EP and I wanted to see what he thought,” Rossell said. “He said he really wanted to cut it but he didn’t want to take it away from me because I was trying to do the artist thing. I said, ‘Take it!’ So that’s how that happened. Looking back, had I not stuck to my guns and written the kind of music I love, there’s no way he would have liked what I had written if I had changed or tried to do what the rest of the town was doing.”

The song, which was featured on Brooks’ album Gunslinger, would earn Brooks his first No. 1 country radio song since 2007.

Rossell followed that by co-writing “Dive Bar,” which wound up as a collaboration for Brooks and Blake Shelton, as well as Brooks’ top 10 hit “All Day Long.”

Rossell, signed to Wrensong Publishing, is now focusing more fully on his own career as an artist, having recently released the single “All I Need To See.” He opened for Brooks’ world tour in 2016 and has earned more than two million streams.

During a recent visit to the MusicRow Magazine office, the Chattanooga native performed a trio of new songs, including “All I Need To See.”

“I wrote this about my wife—I wrote it a few months after we met, so I didn’t even really know her that well at the time. I wrote this based on some things we had experienced and some characteristics of her but it’s crazy because as the years have gone by, it’s become our life.”

He also offered “That’s Why I Call You Son,” which pulls from his own relationship with his father, as well as the clever, lost-love ballad “Hollywood.”

“I dated this girl for years on and off that lived in California. She couldn’t commit and looking back, I’m glad it didn’t work out, because I have a great relationship now, but I tried to write this song with the emotions I felt at that time.”

Rossell is currently in the studio recording music for a new project.

Performers Announced For CMA Welcome Reception At Country Radio Seminar

Pictured (L-R): Everette, Kylie Morgan, and Angie K.

This year’s Country Radio Seminar will again launch with the CMA Welcome Reception, set for Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Omni Hotel Nashville. The reception will feature performances from recipients of the second annual CMA KixStart Artist Scholarship, including EMI Records Nashville’s Kylie Morgan, Broken Bow Records’ Everette, and independent artist Angie K.

Morgan is a member of CMT’s Next Women of Country Class of 2020, and is currently signed to SMACKSongs as a writer. She has toured with artists including Dan + Shay and is prepping her current project. Duo Everette—which includes Brent Rupard and Anthony Olympia—co-produced and wrote nearly every song on their debut project Slow Roll. Angie K has independently released two projects, toured with Jake Owen and Tanya Tucker, earned a song on Apple Music’s “Hot Tracks” playlist, as well as a track that served as the soundtrack for the Magic Kingdom’s Happily Ever After nightly fireworks show at Walt Disney World.

In October 2019, Everette, Kylie Morgan and Angie K began their work as part of the year-long CMA KixStart Artist Scholarship program (named after Brooks & Dunn’s Kix Brooks). The program connects the selected artists with various members of the music industry and offers them opportunities to participate in CMA events, including the CMA Awards, CMA Fest, CMA Foundation programs and more.

2020 marks the fifth year CRS has partnered with CMA for the event, as well as the 10th consecutive year the Welcome Reception has been part of the CRS agenda.

This year’s Country Radio Seminar runs from Feb. 19-21, 2020 at Omni Hotel Nashville.
