Pandora Drop Sends Mixed Signals

Pandora Media went public this week on June 15, with an offering priced at $16 per share. The stock opened at $20 a share, hitting a high of $26 and closing at $17.42. On Tuesday, before shares went onto the open market the company was valued at $2.6 billion. At one point on Wednesday the value had climbed to $4 billion. But by the end of the day on Thursday, the stock had dropped 24% and once again was worth about $2.1 billion. As of this writing mid-day June 17, the stock is down about 3% at $12.85 per share for a market cap of about $1.96 billion. So what happened to the wings on which Pandora was soaring?
A large part of the problem can be traced to BTIG Research analyst Richard Greenfield who came out shortly after the IPO with a sell rating and a price target of $5.50. [ouch]
Greenfield pointed to a new scenario with more competition for the web radio service from companies such as Spotify and Turntable.fm.

While Pandora is creating a large active user base, its reach/frequency continues to pale in comparison to terrestrial radio, as does its profitability,” says Greenfiled. “Pandora’s fundamental problem is that active users and listening hours are growing rapidly, but those listener hours have fixed (and annually escalating) royalty costs per streaming hour (fees to music labels).”

Another way to explain the above comment is to say that the business doesn’t scale.
In an interview posted on AllThingsD, writer Peter Kafka asks Pandora CEO Joe Kennedy about the effect of Internet and Pandora coming to auto dashboards. Kennedy says, “We’ve had announcements from six of the world’s major automakers — Ford, Toyota, GM, Mercedes, BMW and Hyundai — and they’ve all said, ‘we’re going to integrate Pandora into our vehicles going forward.’ Now, the nature of automotive is, it isn’t a flip-the-switch phenomena. It rolls out over several models, over time. And then you have a replacement cycle that’s about 7 years per car. So I think of automotive as a snowball, that starts out relatively small, but builds and builds and builds and builds. You get out to years five to ten, and it’s tremendously big.”

SPIN ZONE
At least No. 1 isn’t so far away, Justin Moore. After a two week run at the top by Blake Shelton’s “Honey Bee,” Moore’s “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” takes over the CountryBreakout Chart’s No. 1 spot to give the young Valory Music Co. artist his second No. 1 single. Positions 3-5 are all Capitol Records, with Dierks Bentley’s “Am I The Only One” leading the pack, followed by Luke Bryan’s “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)” and Lady Antebellum’s “Just A Kiss.”
It’s also a week of big debuts. Fresh from his performance at the CMT Music Awards, Toby Keith’s “Made In America” makes a huge leap to debut at No. 35 and gains 785 spins in the process. In doing so, he slightly overshadows other really big debuts from Alan Jackson (“Long Way To Go,” No. 63), Dolly Parton (“Together You And I,” No. 70) and Ronnie Dunn (“Cost Of Livin’,” No. 73)
Thompson Square’s followup to No. 1 single “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not” is “I Got You” and it’s looking very healthy at No. 18 after a gain of 242 spins. At the lower end of the chart making its debut at No. 75 is LoCash Cowboys’ “You Got Me.” Someone really needs to do a mashup of these two. And poised for big debuts in the coming weeks are Kellie Pickler’s “Tough” and J.T. Hodges’ “Hunt You Down.”

Hartigan Joins Rodeowave, Arista Appoints West Coast Regional

Lori Hartigan

Promotion veteran Lori Hartigan has joined newly formed Rodeowave Entertainment as Partner. In this role Hartigan will serve as key principal for the label in sales, marketing, radio, management, and promotion. She comes to Rodeowave from Arista Nashville, where she served 19 years directing West Coast promotion.
The move reunites Hartigan with Rodeowave’s flagship artist Phil Vassar, with whom she worked during his tenure with Arista. During this period, Hartigan was a part of 13 Phil Vassar singles, including three No. 1s. She was a part of the original team to launch the label and, in addition to Vassar, worked with Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley, Brooks & Dunn, Alan Jackson, Jerrod Niemann and many more.
“I think everyone knows about my admiration for Phil Vassar and his music,” says Hartigan. “The potential for Rodeowave Entertainment is limitless. To be a part of  a high performance team with an innovative spirit and a focus on integrity in music is a dream come true for me.”

Lauren Thomas

Reach Hartigan at 760-929-1019 or here.
Following Hartigan’s departure, Arista Nashville has appointed Lauren Thomas to the West Coast regional position. Thomas joined Arista’s promotion department in 2009 and was promoted to Midwest regional in December 2010. She will continue to be based in Nashville.
“Lauren has proven herself as a rising star in the Midwest,” says Arista Nashville VP Promotion Lesly Tyson, “and we are very excited to give her the opportunity to head back to her old stomping grounds and lead the way for Arista Nashville on the West Coast.”

Phil Vassar recently performed on the outdoor Chevy Stage during CMA Music Festival. Fans braving the heat were treated to his old hits as well as his new single “Let’s Get Together,” which is climbing charts right now. (L-R): Stephanie Flick (CAA), Stan Marczewski (Rodeowave), Phil Vassar, Teddi Bonadies (Rodeowave), Rod Essig (CAA), Bill Macky (Rodeowave), Jim Butler (CAA,) Jeff Gregg (CAA) and Angie Perrault (CAA).

SPIN ZONE
It’s a close race, but Blake Shelton’s “Honey Bee” edges out Justin Moore’s “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” to earn a second week in the CountryBreakout Chart’s No. 1 spot. Capitol bros Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley are neck-and-neck at No. 3 and 4, followed by Chris Young’s “Tomorrow” at No. 5. And fresh from a big performance night at the 2011 CMT Music Awards, Jason Aldean’s “Dirt Road Anthem” cruises on to No. 10.
Kudos to the team over at Universal Music Group, who have managed a whole boatload of impressive figures with this chart. For starters, the record-setting Scotty McCreery single “I Love You This Big” hasn’t lost its momentum, zooming to No. 35 with the week’s highest gain of 493 spins. That puts him one spot ahead of his labelmate and hero Josh Turner’s “I Wouldn’t Be A Man.” Two more important debuts came out of the UMG camp as well–George Strait’s “Here For A Good Time,” which vaulted to No. 66 despite no prior weeks reporting, and AI finalist Lauren Alaina’s “Like My Mother Does” at No. 70.
Then there’s Brad Paisley’s “Remind Me,” featuring Carrie Underwood. It still doesn’t seem to have any official status as a single, though it hardly matters–it’s already up to No. 31 with a huge gain of 368 spins. Be on the lookout for a big debut next week from Toby Keith’s “Made In America.” Its Wednesday reveal on the CMT Awards was a little too late to get it charted today, but it’s currently right outside the Top 80 and will no doubt explode in the next cycle.

Scotty McCreery Makes History With Debut Single

Mercury Nashville artist and American Idol champ Scotty McCreery’s “I Love You This Big” debuted at No. 32 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, the highest debut for a new artist’s first single since the chart began using BDS in 1990.
“I am humbled and shocked by this news,” says Scotty. “I can’t tell you what it means to me to be on the same charts as my musical heroes. I want to thank my fans and especially country radio for their support. I continue to be amazed by everything that has happened to me in such a short time.”
The song, which hit No. 1 on iTunes, reached No. 3 on the Billboard Digital Songs chart with 171,404 units sold.
“This is such a special song to me, so I am thrilled that it is getting such a great reception at country radio. What I love about ‘I Love You This Big’ is that it can mean different things to different people. It could be about the relationship between a couple in love or a parent and child.”
Scotty will be in Nashville next week to begin recording his debut album. He will present at the CMT Music Awards on Wednesday and participate in other CMA Music Festival activities, including the City of Hope Celebrity Softball Game on Saturday, June 11. He will make his Grand Ole Opry debut on Friday, June 10.
He will also perform on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on June 15, Good Morning America on August 12, and is featured on the American Idols Live Tour that begins July 6.

Way Out West artist Shawna Russell hung out in the studio recently with Dusty Edwards (L) at KREK in Bristow, Oklahoma, to promote her latest single "Get Right Or Get Left."

A scant nine weeks is all it took for Blake Shelton’s “Honey Bee” to make the top of the charts. It’s been on a rapid climb since its ACM Awards debut, and scoots ahead of last week’s No. 1, “Mean” by Taylor Swift. Justin Moore will also be vying for a No. 1 soon as “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” edges up to No. 3. Toby Keith’s “Somewhere Else” sits tight at No. 4, and Luke Bryan’s “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)” packs on 100 new spins to move up to No. 5.
Disproving all the naysayers, Scotty McCreery’s “I Love You This Big” (19 Ent./Mercury) gets a big 415 spin jolt and earns our Power Chart Debut at No. 59. McCreery’s fellow AI castmate Lauren Alaina is right outside the Top 80 with “Like My Mother Does,” which should make its first appearance in the next chart.

The Valory Music Co. artist Brantley Gilbert recently stopped by Detroit's WYCD to share some of his new music. Gilbert’s single “Country Must Be Country Wide” is currently No. 33 on the CountryBreakout Chart. (L-R): Gilbert, WYCD PD Tim Roberts

It might be a little tight at the top of the chart, but there’s room for movement in the second half. Brad Paisley’s “Remind Me” featuring Carrie Underwood is off to a great start, zooming up to No. 42 in its second week. Phil Vassar’s “Let’s Get Together” is also on the move as it jumps to No. 51. Ash Bowers’ “I Still Believe In That” moves No. 54-50, Jennette McCurdy’s “Generation Love” is up to No. 55, and Jerrod Niemann’s “One More Drinkin’ Song” makes a strong debut at No. 72
