“We’re extremely excited to welcome these talented people to our group,” said
Andrew Kintz, managing director of SunTrust’s SEG music division. “Over the past 25 years, we’ve built our business in partnership with the Nashville music community, and their input is extremely valuable as we build our team.”

Weekly Chart Report (5/13/11)
/by FreemanSPIN ZONE
It’s a tight 1-2-3 configuration at the top of the CountryBreakout Chart, but Brad Paisley’s “Old Alabama” remains at No. 1 for a second consecutive week. Chasing Paisley very closely are The Band Perry’s “You Lie” at No. 2, and Taylor Swift’s “Mean” which makes a big jump up from No. 6. Factor in Justin Moore’s “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” at No. 5, and Big Machine Label Group has 60 percent of the Top 5.
More summer singles are on the way. Lady Antebellum’s highly anticipated “Just A Kiss” has risen from zero to No. 30 in a short two week span. Similarly Zac Brown Band’s “Knee Deep” featuring Jimmy Buffett has climbed all the way to No. 27 in just three weeks. Bucking the upbeat, sunny summer trend is Kenny Chesney’s “You And Tequila” featuring rocker Grace Potter. The move seems to be working–the contemplative number has quickly ascended to No. 44 in its second week charting.
Joe Nichols sticks with the more traditional summer fare on his “Take It Off,” and earns the Power Chart Debut honor. Also debuting are Jennette McCurdy’s “Generation Love” at No. 76, Jordan Carter’s “Daddy Never Had A Chance In Hell” at No. 79 and Burns & Poe’s “Second Chance” at No. 80.

Chesney Donates Concert Fees to Tuscaloosa
/by MichelleKenny Chesney
Kenny Chesney, Morris Management, and his representatives at AEG/TMG have announced that the May 25 concert in Tuscaloosa, AL on his 2011 Goin’ Coastal Tour will help raise money for the city after its recent tornado damage. Chesney’s fees, as well as those of his management and booking representatives, will be donated to GiveTuscaloosa.com, a clearinghouse for local charities and social services founded specifically to address the devastating tornado that ravaged the city on April 27. Chesney had considered postponing the date, but instead decided that the concert would be tremendously positive to the community, both emotionally and as a fundraising boon.
Chesney comments, “When we first heard about this tragedy we were stunned, as we have so many fans in the area and have enjoyed every visit that we’ve made there over the years. But Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox convinced us that this is a great opportunity to bring the people of Tuscaloosa together in a positive way, and we are grateful for the opportunity to help them in this way.”

Protect IP Bill Aims To Curb Piracy
/by adminAccording to an official press release, The Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act, or PROTECT IP Act, follows bipartisan legislation introduced in 2010, which won the unanimous support of Senate Judiciary Committee members. The PROTECT IP Act narrows the definition of a rogue website, while ensuring that law enforcement can get at the “worst-of-the-worst” websites dedicated to selling infringing goods. Copyright infringement and the sale of counterfeit goods reportedly cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of jobs, as well as billions of dollars in lost tax revenue for federal, state and local governments.
Senator Leahy said “This legislation will protect the investment American companies make in developing brands and creating content and will protect the jobs associated with those investments. It will also protect American consumers, who should feel confident that the goods they purchase are of the type and quality they expect. The PROTECT IP Act targets the most egregious actors, and is an important first step to putting a stop to online piracy and sale of counterfeit goods.”
Steve Bogard, President of NSAI commented on the new bill saying, “We applaud the introduction of the bi-partisan IP Protection Act by our friends Senators Leahy, Hatch and Grassley, and thank them their co-sponsors and all the members of Senate Judiciary. This law is an important first step in showing the world that America is serious about protecting one of our most valuable resources, American Music. As an industry, songwriters are committed to leading the way toward a new era of music industry cooperation that will help enable our government to protect and promote one of our most precious assets around the world American music.”
Key updates to the PROTECT IP Act include:
Leahy and Hatch introduced legislation to counter online infringement in September 2010, and in November 2010, the Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously approved the legislation by a vote of 19-0. In February, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing examining the impact of online infringement and counterfeit sales. The PROTECT IP Act builds on the consensus legislation approved by the Committee last year, while incorporating provisions in response to concerns raised by stakeholders. The PROTECT IP Act is cosponsored by Senators Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-.R.I.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), Christopher Coons (D-Del.), and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.)

Cloud-Based Chromebook For Rent
/by adminGoogle never sleeps. After announcing a new cloud-based music locker service earlier this week, the search giant has now revealed plans to offer an ultra cheap laptop based on its Chrome operating system as soon as June 15. The new device can be rented by students for just $20, or others at $28 month. The new “Chromebooks” will be manufactured by Acer and Samsung.
Features include an 8 second boot time, built in Wi-Fi and 3G wireless. 3G models will include 100 MB per month of free mobile data from Verizon. What makes the Chromebook unique is that it contains no apps or storage, all functions are performed in the cloud. An advantage is that the Chromebook can be shared among various users. Each user simply logs in to access their own data and files. Due to cloud based operating system all apps stay up to date automatically.
One drawback to the device is that its functionality is dependent upon having an online connection. As Google warns, “Obviously, you’re going to need a wireless network, be willing to use it subject to the provider’s terms and conditions, and be ready to put up with its real life limitations including, for example, its speed and availability. When you do not have network access, functionality that depends on it will not be available.”

Zac Brown Launches Southern Ground Artists
/by Sarah SkatesZac Brown has been using the Southern Ground Records moniker for a couple of years, and today announced the label’s official launch.
Southern Ground Artists, Inc. is home to Sonia Leigh, The Wood Brothers, Blackberry Smoke, Levi Lowrey and Nic Cowan. It is being distributed by RED.

There’s Blackberry Smoke coming onboard, and Nic Cowan and Levi Lowrey, and all the people that love our music will love their music, too, I feel confident.”
