DISClaimer Single Reviews: Miranda Lambert, Hannah Ellis, Walker Hayes

There’s an awful lot of pop music in this week’s “country” round-up edition of DISClaimer.

Holding down the fort and standing firmly on country ground are Chase Rice, Brett Young, Ryan Hurd and our Disc of the Day winner, queen Miranda Lambert.

The DISCovery Award also goes to a female artist, Curb newcomer Hannah Ellis.

HANNAH ELLIS / “Us”
Writers: Hannah Ellis/Jason Massey/Travis Wood; Producer: Jason Massey; Label: Curb Records
— Bubbling and boiling, this churning, rhythm-happy number comes across like a female version of Keith Urban’s catchy, pop-country sound. Highly listenable.

WALKER HAYES / “U Gurl”
Writers: Walker Hayes/Dylan Guthro/Jodi Guthro; Producer: Dylan Guthro; Label: Monument Records
— While “Fancy Like” continues to dominate, Hayes issues this new track. It’s more pop, white-boy hip-hop, and has even less to do with country music than his mega hit.

SHY CARTER / “The Rest of Us”
Writers: Shy Carter/Bryan Simpson/Josh Kerr; Producer: none listed; Label: Warner
— The title tune of Carter’s debut EP is a lovely pop love ode wafting with heartfelt tenor vocals, brushed percussion and sweet lyrics. Enchanting. Swoon worthy. Stick with his “Beer With My Friends” banger, but keep this in your back pocket as proof of the depth of his talent.

LEE BRICE / “Soul”
Writers: Kevin Kadish/Tony Ferrari; Producer: Ben Glover/Kyle Jacobs; Label: Curb Records
— In the wake of four straight No. 1 country hits, Brice motors down a pop side street with this wildly attractive, bouncy bopper. Deliciously hooky.

THE WILD FEATHERS / “Ain’t Lookin’”
Writers: Jeffrey Steele/Joel King/Ricky Young/Taylor Burns; Producer: The Wild Feathers; Label: New West
— I loved ‘em when they were a pop/rock band, and I loved ‘em just as much as country music makers. Now they are rocking again. Whatever….

MIRANDA LAMBERT / “If I Was a Cowboy”
Writers: Miranda Lambert/Jesse Frasure; Producer: Luke Dick/Jon Randall; Label: RCA/Vanner Records
— Breezy and beautiful, this is the sound of freedom and high spirits. A bases-loaded home run. Massive airplay, please.

YOLA / “Be My Friend”
Writers: Yola/Dan Auerbach/Ruby Amanfu; Producer: Dan Auerbach; Label: Easy Eye/Concord
— This British-born, Nashville-based artist seamlessly blends soul, Americana and country. She’s this month’s OpryNext artist and is touring with Chris Stapleton. Her commanding voice is center stage in this stately ballad. That’s Americana queen Brandi Carlile on the twin-like harmony vocals.

BRETT YOUNG / “You Didn’t”
Writers: Ashley Gorley/Brett Young/Jimmy Robbins/Jon Nite; Producer: Dann Huff/Jimmy Harnen; Label: BMLG
— Mr. Romance cuddles up next to you while crooning a ballad about accepting a breakup without casting blame or recriminations. Tender and affecting. A heart-tugging lyric that will pierce anyone who has lived the line, “I fell in love, and you didn’t.”

RUTHIE COLLINS / “Hypocrite”
Writers: Ruthie Collins/Natalie Stovall; Producer: Brandon Hood; Label: Sidewalk
— Ruthie’s breakup isn’t going so well. In this ballad, she’s putting on a good face, but is actually shattered because she’s still in love with him. The pounding surrounding track is very pop.

CHASE RICE / “If I Were Rock & Roll”
Writers: Chase Rice; Producer: Jay Joyce; Label: Broken Bow Records
— Charmingly written. It’s a jaunty ditty about love and fidelity that brings a smile to your face. The shuffling, bright, light-hearted production is mighty endearing, too.

MORGAN EVANS/ “Love Is Real”
Writers: Jordan Reynolds/Morgan Evans/Parker Welling; Producer: Dann Huff; Label: Warner Music Nashville
— Relentlessly optimistic. The burbling, percussive track and sunshine-y melody are more than a little reminiscent of the style of his fellow Oz import Keith Urban. Which is to say: toe-tapping, catchy, rocking and shiny.

RYAN HURD / “Pass It On”
Writers: Ryan James Hurd/Maren Morris/Jordan Schmidt/Michael Hardy; Producer: Aaron Eshuis; Label: Arista Nashville
— Do you have good fortune? Don’t keep it to yourself. Pass it on to someone else, says Ryan in this ear-tickling pleaser. Hand claps. Gang sing-along. Rolling tempo. What’s not to like?

Brent Cobb Pays Tribute To Gospel Roots With Upcoming Album

Brent Cobb. Photo: Alysse Gafkjen

Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter and musician Brent Cobb is releasing his debut gospel album, And Now, Let’s Turn To Page, on Jan. 28 via his own label, Ol’ Buddy Records. Ahead of the release, the track “We Shall Rise” is available everywhere now.

The album, which was produced by Dave Cobb and recorded at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A, includes new renditions of eight traditional gospel favorites, as well as one original track, “When It’s My Time,” penned by Cobb, his wife Layne and Mike Harmeier. Through the songs, Cobb pays homage to the community and values of his hometown while incorporating his signature sound of country, blues and southern rock.

The project came to fruition in part due to a near-death experience in July 2020, when the vehicle that Cobb was driving with his young son inside got T-boned at a rural four-way stop.

“You just start piecing together how everything is sort of intentional… I’d always had it in the back of my mind to make a gospel album. That moment of clarity, of almost getting killed, made me think I should just make the gospel album now,” shares Cobb. “I’ve always wanted to make a southern gospel album because it’s what I come from, but also it used to seem like a rite of passage for country singers to make a gospel album. I’m just trying to carry on that torch.”

The album was also a family affair of sorts for Cobb, who enlisted the help of his wife, his mother Renee Cobb, his sister Alecia Grant, his father Patrick Cobb and his cousin Dave on the closing track, “Blessed Be The Tie That Binds.” Also featured on the project are backing vocals from Anderson EastCaylee Hammack, and members of Antioch, a Georgia-based gospel group led by Cobb’s father.

And Now, Let’s Turn To Page... Track List:
1. Just A Closer Walk With Thee
2. When It’s My Time
3. In The Garden
4. Are You Washed in the Blood?
5. Softly and Tenderly
6. Old Rugged Cross
7. We Shall Rise
8. Old Country Church
9. Blessed Be The Tie That Binds

Tammy Hyler, Smashville Entertainment Nominated At Franklin International Indie Film Festival

Award-winning, renowned songwriter, music industry professional and film producer, Tammy Hyler (Smashville Entertainment) will celebrate her most recent collaborative TV/film project, Way Back In The Woods at the 5th Annual Franklin International Indie Film Festival in November.

The short film, created and produced by Hyler, co-written by Hyler and Dan Backman, was produced as the pilot for a ten-episode, hour-long television series. Way Back In The Woods also celebrated accolades from the New York Independent Cinema Awards, and LA Independent Film Awards earlier this year.

Shot in Nashville, Fairview and Primm Springs, Tennessee, the film is a fictional story of four young sisters, born and raised in the Tennessee backwoods. Abandoned by their parents as young children, the girls are left to fend for themselves where they learn to hunt, fish and carry on with the family underground moonshine distillery. A wounded hunter stumbles upon their them, forcing the girls to decide his fate.

“The concept for Way Back In The Woods was derived from a song that Shaye Smith, Alexis Ebert and I wrote. We shot the corresponding music video and the storyline for the series just seemed to write itself. I couldn’t get it down on paper fast enough,” shares Hyler. “The pilot has been dubbed Little Women in the woods, meets Succession, meets Outer Banks by industry insiders. I’m so very proud in the early welcome and praise, to be honored by the Franklin International Indie Film Festival, and to celebrate the achievement at the screening in our backyard where the film was made.”

The festival will be held at The Factory in the Franklin Mockingbird Theater from Tuesday, Nov. 9, through Sunday, Nov. 14. With more than 151 films submitted, Way Back In The Woods is nominated in multiple categories, including Doc Feature, Best Short Film, Best Tennessee Short Film, and Audience Favorite.

Miranda Lambert’s Muttnation Fund Receives Aid From Country Music Association

Miranda Lambert’s MuttNation Fund at Waggle has expanded its program to help all pet owners employed in the music community with support from the Country Music Association’s Music Industry COVID Support initiative.

Initially created to assist music community members impacted by COVID-19 with vet bills, the MuttNation Fund will now help anyone in the industry with their pet’s medical bills for any reason. Applications for the MuttNation Fund are open now.

“We know there are still many people dealing with the impact of the pandemic, and it’s clear there will be a need long after it’s passed because unexpected vet bills can be overwhelming,” says Lambert. “We want the music community to know we’re here to help. So, if you’re associated with the music industry, have a pet that needs veterinary care, and you need a helping hand–MuttNation and the CMA are here for you.”

One hundred percent of the donations received are sent directly to the pet’s attending veterinarian. If more than enough funds are raised for any one pet, the extra funds rollover into the MuttNation Fund to keep helping more animals.

“We are proud to see how Miranda and MuttNation are expanding this partnership,” adds Tiffany Kerns, CMA VP of Community Outreach and CMA Foundation Executive Director. “As a pet parent myself, I know first-hand the financial obligation required to care for animals. They are family. We commend Miranda for extending this opportunity to all in our industry who need assistance, whether pandemic-related or not.
