Scotty McCreery to ‘Plunge In Place’ for Special Olympics North Carolina Fundraiser

Scotty McCreery

Scotty McCreery has signed on to participate with Special Olympics of North Carolina in its Plunge In Place fundraising event, an adaption to its annual Polar Plunge fundraiser.

Traditional Polar Plunges take place across the state in lakes, pools and even the ocean to benefit SONC. This year, the Plunge in Place event encourages participants to take the Plunge however they want: into a pool, an ice bath, the ocean, using a frigid bottle of water, or even running through sprinklers. All funds raised will directly benefit Special Olympics athletes, and McCreery has created “Team Scotty” to fundraise in support of SONC. He will also video himself taking the Plunge, and the video will be featured during Plunge Week, February 21-26.

“I’m happy to Plunge in Place this year and show my support of the nearly 40,000 athletes who train and compete as part of Special Olympics North Carolina,” said McCreery. “They inspire me.”

Fellow fundraisers can register online to begin the Plunge in Place fundraising process or donate in support of the Plunge in Place initiative. Polar Plungers must raise a minimum of $100 by Feb. 26 to qualify for additional Plunge incentives and contests. Super Plungers must raise a minimum of $100 to receive the official 2021 Plunge in Place T-shirt, the commemorative sweatshirt and to qualify for contests and incentive prizes.

Jordan Smith Signs With Provident Label Group/Sony Music

Jordan Smith, The Voice season 9 winner, has signed a deal with Provident Label Group/Sony Music. He’s releasing his first single with the label today (Feb. 1), “Great You Are.”

As the highest-selling artist to ever emerge from The Voice, Smith shot three performance singles to the top of the charts while competing on the show: “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” which he performed as a tribute to the lives lost during the Paris bombing in 2015; a Christmas single, “Mary Did You Know?;” and a powerful cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” His full-length debut, Something Beautiful, entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2, and was followed by his Christmas album, ’Tis The Season, and his second acclaimed studio LP, Only Love, on which he co-penned six of the project’s dozen tracks.

As a writer signed to Universal Music Publishing Group, Smith has written with Glen Ballard, Steve Booker, Sam Ellis, Blair Daly, Jordan Reynolds, Jonas Myrin, MoZella, Dave Barnes, and Bernie Herms, among other esteemed lyricists. He’s also written songs and toured extensively with Michael W. Smith, and holds co-writing credit on “Ashes,” the theme song for Deadpool 2 recorded by Celine Dion. Smith also performed “Feel Good,” the theme song for ABC’s GMA Day.

Co-written by Smith with Jeff Sojka and Matt Armstrong, the lyrics to “Great You Are” recall Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem on a donkey as people greeted Him with palm branches. “I was just so moved by the idea that if I’m silent, the Lord will still find a way to be worshipped,” Smith says. “He won’t miss out on anything because we don’t give Him the glory or the recognition or the worship He deserves. But I want so badly to be a part of that. I’m really excited that this is the first single, and people get to hear that statement from me, and then people get to sing that statement as a commitment to God.”

Back Blocks Music announced the signing of its flagship songwriter Blake Pendergrass to an exclusive, worldwide publishing agreement. This is Pendergrass’ first publishing deal and comes on the heels of the success of the BMI-affiliate’s first major cut: Morgan Wallen’s “865.”

“From the very first playlist of demos I heard I became a fan of Blake’s and knew I needed to work with him. I loved his dynamic songwriting, work ethic, and the versatile network of writers he is building—it felt like a perfect fit,” says Rakiyah Marshall, Founder/CEO of Back Blocks Music. “I am thrilled to have Blake be a part of the Back Blocks family and the first publishing client. There are big things to come and I’m excited for our future together.”

A Raleigh, North Carolina native, Pendergrass moved to Nashville to study commercial music at Belmont University. At the end of 2020, Pendergrass got word he earned a coveted spot on Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album. He was the only un-signed writer on the 30-song project. Pendergrass also has upcoming cuts with Chris Lane and newcomer Ashley Cooke.

“From the moment I met Rakiyah I knew that she was the exact kind of person that I wanted to work with,” says Pendergrass. “She is strategic, driven, and connected yet she still manages to be incredibly kind. From the beginning it was clear that she understood me and my music and that she was committed to bringing my career to new heights. I am so thankful to be able to call Back Blocks my publishing home!”

Health Officials Cancel Coachella, Stagecoach Festivals

Stagecoach 2019

Coachella and Stagecoach have been canceled, according to an order from the health department of California’s Riverside County, where the annual festivals are held every year. The cancellation, announced today (Jan. 29), is a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Both produced by Goldenvoice, Coachella was planned for April 9-11 and 16-18, while Stagecoach was slated for April 23-25. Both festivals were also canceled in 2020, after being postponed from April until October.

According to Friday’s order, “both the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and the Stagecoach Country Music Festival are music concerts and gatherings of an international scope, attracting hundreds of thousands of attendees from many countries,” which could increase the risk of spreading the virus. Read the order in full here.

New dates have not yet been announced.

“This move is vital, as we continue to work toward providing the best festival experience for our Jammers,” said Executive Producer Rendy Lovelady. “We feel the timing is much better for everyone involved, and we can’t wait to see everyone back at the beach.”

The festival lineup also includes Cody Jinks, Joe Nichols, Lindsay Ell, Jon Langston, CJ Solar and Frank Ray, who, with Skynard, are slated for Friday, June 4;  Cole Swindell, Billy Ray Cyrus, Tenille Townes, Shy Carter and Alex Hall for the June 5 lineup, with Paisley; and Brothers Osborne, Riley Green, Walker Hayes, Ryan Hurd, Shelly Fairchild and the Pepsi Southern Original winner performing on June 6, with Bryan.
