Justin Moore celebrated a No. 1 single and two Gold albums during a No. 1 party  yesterday (March 12) at Nashville’s Honkytonk Central.

The singer was honored for his third No. 1 single, “‘Til My Last Day” and his two gold albums–Justin Moore and Outlaws Like Me–which have together sold over 1 million copies to date.
Industry, family and friends gathered to celebrate songwriters Moore (BMI), Jeremy Stover (ASCAP), Brian Maher (ASCAP); publishers Big Machine Music, Sony/ATV/EMI and Bigger Picture and The Valory Music Co. promotion team. This song marks the second chart-topper for this songwriting trio – Moore’s debut single, “Small Town USA,” was the first.
The celebration was a perfect send off for Moore, who will begin his first headlining tour in Pikeville, Ky. tomorrow night (March 14).

MusicRow No. 1 Song

blake shelton album cover1Just when it seems the popularity of Blake Shelton couldn’t get any stronger, he outdoes himself again. Today he hit the top of the MusicRow chart with a new No. 1; this time a groovy title, “Sure Be Cool If You Did.”
Written by Rodney Clawson, Jimmy Robbins, and Chris Tompkins, it is the lead single from his March 26 full-length studio album, Based on a True Story. His longtime producer Scott Hendricks helmed the release for Warner Music Nashville.

Shelton’s fans keep coming back for more. Not only did the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year achieve stellar ratings for his 2012 primetime TV special, but he maintains a weekly relationship with fans as a coach on NBC’s The Voice. Last week (3/1) Shelton even made his acting debut on Reba’s Malibu Country on ABC.
Catch him while you can––it would be hard not to––as the singer prepares to co-host the 48th Annual ACM Awards for the third year before heading out on the Ten Times Crazier tour this summer.

Charlie Cook On Air: The 10 Best Songs On Country Radio

CCook-onair-sm111I like lists. I find myself reading lists. I like the simplicity of lists. They are easy to follow and you can quit after any number and still feel like you have gleaned some information.
Here is a list of the 10 best songs on Country radio right now. Okay, according to me. What criteria did I use? If I turn up the radio when it comes on I give it points. If I sing along to it I give it more points. If I actually know the words that I am singing along to it gets even more points. That’s it. Oh, one more thing. I am going to list songs that are what radio programmers call recurrents along with what record companies refer to as currents.
10. “Sure Be Cool if You Did”—Blake Shelton (R. Clawson, C. Tompkins, J. Robbins). If you’re like most Country Music fans you look forward to Blake Shelton music. This one raced up the charts. Your Pretty Pink Lemonade Shooter. Come on wouldn’t you walk right up to a girl drinking that? A half ounce of Triple Sec, a half ounce of lemon vodka and 1 oz. of lemonade. That is a recipe for dancing on the bar, at minimum.
9. “I Drive Your Truck”—Lee Brice (J. Alexander, C. Harrington, J. Yeary). This one took me a couple of listens. About two minutes into the song you can begin to hear the pain in Lee’s voice. He really nails this song. You believe that this is real for him and his performance makes me stop and think about how I would respond in that situation. Driving the truck is a real salute.
8. “Merry Go ‘Round”—Kacey Musgraves (K. Musgraves, J. Osborne, S. McAnally). The best part of Country Music is that the writer’s use of the English language is unparalleled by other musical formats. This was not written in 15 minutes. Populating the Merry Go ‘Round with a number of Marys is not something that falls in your lap.
7. “Highway Don’t Care”—Tim McGraw/Taylor Swift (M. Irwin, J. Kear, B. Warren, B. Warren). In case you haven’t noticed, Scott Borchetta is a pretty smart guy.
6. “For You”—Keith Urban (K. Urban, M. Powell). Have you seen the video? Oh my gosh! If you aren’t absolutely moved by these lyrics go to 1:30 into the song and listen for the next 30 seconds.
5. “Fly Over States”—Jason Aldean (N. Thrasher, M. Dulaney). This took one listen. Growing up in the Midwest myself, and living in NY and LA I know what the coasters really think of the rest of the country. I also know that they are full of crap. I would have liked the song to be a little more biting on the topic but…
4. “Springsteen”—Eric Church (E. Church, J. Hyde, R. Tyndell). I will say right out, I am not a big Springsteen fan. I appreciate him but I went to one concert. At about 10 hours in, when I recognized only two songs, I knew that this wasn’t for me but I just insert Seger when Eric sings Springsteen and I am good to go.
3. “More Trucks than Cars”—Craig Morgan (C. Morgan, P. O’Donnell, C. Wiseman). Come on, I live in West Virginia. And have you been to a Wal-Mart parking lot recently? This is not just about Country Music fans. This is about ‘merica.
2. “Don’t Rush”—Kelly Clarkson/Vince Gill (B. Sanders, N. Hemby, L.D. Chapman). We now have a challenger for the best female voice on Country Music radio. Kelly wants to be part of the format but AC and Hot AC are not going to roll over. She is a VERY important part of those formats too. Honestly this became my favorite song from the first time I heard it. Kind of like love at first sight. Stopping every minute just because you’re in it is brilliant. I wish radio programmers would get on board more enthusiastically. I think many are missing what could be a song of the year candidate.
1. “She Cranks My Tractor”—Dustin Lynch (D. Lynch, B. Beavers, T. Nichols). I told you that being able to sing along was worth points. I am not too sure about 10 pounds of sugar in a five pound sack. That can easily get out of control. But seriously don’t you want a John Deere in the garage after hearing this song?

CRS Luncheon Features Morgan, Pickler, and Darling

Sarah Darling

CRS attendees enjoyed performances by Craig Morgan, Kellie Pickler and Sarah Darling today (Mar. 1) at a lunch hosted by Black River Entertainment. Black River’s CEO Gordon Kerr welcomed guests at the showcase that included both new material and hit songs from the label’s roster.
Darling kicked off the show with “Hey Monday,” followed by “Soldier’s Girl.” She also performed the current single “Home To Me,” recently featured on an episode of ABC’s The Bachelor and from her EP released in January. She shared her enthusiasm with the audience from working with acclaimed producer Dann Huff on the project.
On the side stage, Black River Publishing’s Josh Osborne and Forest Glen Whitehead performed several tunes “in the round” including Kenny Chesney’s No. 1 hit “Come Over” and Greg Bates’ current single “Fill In The Blank,” both co-penned by Osborne, which the audience really enjoyed.

A video of Kellie Pickler was shown to the crowd revealing a touching story about her father who, although incarcerated at the time, gave her a small radio as a birthday gift she treasured as a child. Pickler took the stage and performed new material including “Tough All Over,” a power ballad that oozed classic Country. Pickler expressed her excitement for finding a new home at Black River and closed with an up-tempo and full-on-attitude ditty called  “Ring For Sale.” The audience was with her every step of the way.
Craig Morgan delivered a medley of hits including, “International Harvester,” “That’s What I Love About Sunday,” “Redneck Yacht Club,” “Bonfire” and “This Ole Boy.” It was a good reminder of Morgan’s many hits and we enjoyed going down memory lane with him. With the engaged audience in hand, he performed his current single “More Trucks Than Cars” then asked the audience if he could try out a new song, “I Wake Up Loving You” showing his full range of vocal ability. The audience didn’t mind at all.

Bob Kingsley Connects Radio and Songwriters

Pictured (L-R): Bob Kingsley,

Pictured (L-R): Bob Kingsley, Lee Thomas Miller, Jeff Stevens, Brandy Clark, and Tom Douglas.

For the second consecutive year, Bob Kingsley’s Acoustic Alley hosted a lineup of hit songwriters for in-the-round performances for the Country Radio Seminar. Presented by Bob Kingsley’s Country Top 40 and co-sponsored by SunTrust Bank, Thursday’s (Feb. 28) event offered a chance for lyricists to candidly share thoughts, perceptions and insights with radio gatekeepers.
Each No. 1 hit was humanized and personalized by the songwriters that crafted it, which help to deepen the very relationship discussed during the Ethnographic presentation at the broadcasting conference.
Naturally, most songwriters offered praise for Kingsley during their round. The musical poets shared memories of the various times the legendary broadcaster announced their penned songs had climbed to the summit of the charts, including “One of Those Nights” from Luke Laird, “Tornado” from Natalie Hemby, and “Alone With You” from Shane McAnally––and that was just from the first round.
The second round of performers compelled the audience to their feet while listening to Tom Douglas’ “House That Built Me,” Lee Thomas Miller’s “In Color,” Jeff Stevens’ “Carrying Your Love With Me,” and Brandy Clark’s “Better Dig Two.”
Marv Green, Wendell Mobley, Jason Sellers and Ashley Gorley were included in an additional round, performing renditions of their respective hits, including “Creepin’,” “Tattoos on This Town,” “Strange,” and “Why Ya Wanna.”
It is always impressive to witness the power of a song, especially when it intersects with another bedrock of our industry, radio. As for Kingsley’s evening, broadcasters from around the U.S. gathered to connect to a song, and walk away finding there’s only one degree of separation between each other.

'MusicRow' No. 1 Song

Kacey Musgraves

Kacey Musgraves

You heard it here first! Mercury Nashville’s newcomer, Kacey Musgraves, received her first No. 1 on this week’s MusicRow Chart for her single, “Merry Go Round.”
The former Nashville Star contestant penned the tune with Josh Osborne and co-producer Shane McAnally. McAnally produced the singer’s forthcoming March 19th release, Same Trailer Different Park, alongside Musgraves and Luke Laird.

Nearly one year ago, Musgraves debuted “Merry Go Round” at the Universal Music Group CRS luncheon (Feb. 23, 2012), receiving a warm reception from broadcasters, who gave her a mid-song standing ovation––a stamp of approval from those responsible for this week’s feat.
Although the single speaks of hopeless dysfunction, Musgraves is able to provide a window of perspective beyond the drudgery. For others, the metaphoric Merry Go Round may offer a sense of taunt nostalgia for what life was, or could have been.
By the looks of it, Musgraves is shaping up to be a palatable artist who is unafraid to rock the boat and push boundaries with her progressive perspective. So far, at least one track has been embraced by audiences at radio. So, bring on the full-length album! A little change might do some good.
