Charlie Cook: Will Broadcasters Step Up?

CCook-onair-sm11HD radio has been on the radio landscape the last couple of weeks. It started when a spokesman for General Motors was misquoted about the future of AM/FM in the automobile dashboard.
The journalist that heard something not said, stated that the GM rep had predicted AM/FM was coming off the dashboard in the next year or two. This is not what was said and it started a firestorm about the future of the “radio” in cars. HD radio is being added to many dashboards. As are apps for Pandora, iHeartRadio and Spotify. Soon your dashboard is going to look like your iPad, which is okay with me as long as they continue to add apps and not eliminate choices used by 250,000,000 Americans every week.
Is HD the answer for AM/FM broadcasters? I agree the limited power output was a disadvantage but the increase to higher broadcast power levels for digital carriers will significantly increase the coverage in the auto and help with building penetration. I have not heard many current broadcasters complain about HD, but not too many have been vocal supporters. I would think if you have the ability to add stations to your reach, with drastically reduced costs, you would be on board.
As a consumer I like being offered more choices, without having to pay a subscription fee. I would be interested in hearing what is being offered. If my new car comes with HD factory installed I am excited about the additional choices. I can see why Sirius/XM, Pandora and Spotify will pooh-pooh HD radio. Unfortunately if I am a listener right now, I am also going to pooh-pooh HD radio. Many stations are simply rebroadcasting a co-owned AM signal, trying to expand that reach. I like this is some cases. I have a problem hearing WAJR-AM in my office. This is more about the hardware then the station, but now I have an HD radio in my office so I can listen to WAJR-AM as WVAQ-FM HD2. The coverage in my car will also be better in the evening after WAJR-AM changes their signal pattern.
Broadcasters should provide different programming on their HD channels if they are going to expect this programming to have an impact in the marketplace. If you’re a mainstream country music station on FM how about a Classic Country or Hot Country on your HD2 channel? Or how about programming a format that competes with your direct competitor in the market? Granted, today it would not get a tremendous amount of exposure but as HD shows up in automobiles, the reach will get bigger and bigger.
I know the point has been made that stations have cut back staff in recent times and there are not enough people to program another station in-house. Good point. I hope this does not stifle the growth of a new transmission source. Do you think the other sources are having an easy time at their business? I’m referring to the financial challenges of Pandora and Spotify. They haven’t given up. You think their technology is simple? Heck no. Once a strategy is designed for the HD channels, let’s find the people to execute it.
I hope this isn’t another example of a wasted opportunity. Automakers are being cooperative about installing HD as an option. Please do not respond to their interest in the equipment by failing to provide something that can generate an audience. I do not want radio to lose a place on the dashboard. Maybe not in 2013 but in 2014 and beyond. If someone in each market does not take the lead no one else will step up and this will become a missed opportunity of major proportions. Now this may be applicable to the larger markets only. I know the expense involved for smaller markets may be prohibitive. Not only the start-up costs but the fees stations pay year in and year out. Very likely those smaller market stations are not going to go out there as a leader. This could very well put an obstacle in the whole issue going forward.
That said, where you can do it, I see little downside if broadcasters are willing to step up and provide compelling programming. Of course that is also said of AM/FM.

MusicRow No. 1 Song

cyoung

Chris Young

Chris Young’s fourth release from his album Neon, “I Can Take It From There,” successfully climbed its way to the top of this week’s MusicRow Chart.
The fun-loving title, written by Ben Hayslip, Rhett Atkins, and Young, kicks off a fresh year for Young. In 2012, the singer-songwriter won a coveted CMA Triple Play Award for having written three number-one songs within the year.
With this new radio hit, it’s highly probable that Young’s 2013 will be every bit as successful as 2012.
Catch Young out on the road this summer as a special guest on the Brad Paisley Beat This Summer Tour.

Charlie Cook On Air: The Value of a Chart

CCook-onair-sm111The buzz last week was all about the music charts. There was a battle for the number one spot on two of the charts and the different methodology used by BDS and Mediabase allowed for the each song to claim a number one spot. You would think that this was satisfactory to the labels. Oh NO!
I have to tread softly on this topic because Music Row publishes a chart and my best friend operates another widely watched chart. Still I think there are a couple of points to be made regarding charts and what they have created in the music and radio industries. Some good and some bad.
Recently in this space I talked about liking lists. I do. They are simple and ordered. Is that redundant? Music charts are just lists. Lists of the most popular songs based on some prescribed criteria that is both easily described if not always easily defended. Having two major charts that use different methodology creates the need to defend one or the other position. As I said earlier, last week’s battle was won by both players, which speaks to both the need for two methods and the need to have only one. But like two radio stations in the same market, one playing older songs and one playing newer songs, everyone should be happy at all times. That doesn’t happen.
The good stuff is that music charts have made stars of Casey Kasem, Bob Kingsley and Lon Helton. All fine chaps. Charts have created long time spent listening to the radio, which is very good and produced some nerds about top ten lists like Barry Mardit and even superstar Blake Shelton, who used to write down every song in the top ten so he would be the authority in high school the next day. The bad stuff is in trying to get a record to number one, when head to head with another song also fighting for the top spot on the chart, radio stations and record companies do some bad stuff. By bad I don’t mean illegal, but certainly unethical and not in the best interest of the listeners.
When Record A is vying for the number one position against Record B, programmers and record promoters are known to embellish the strength of one of the records, often even decreasing the strength of the other. This is done at times not to reflect real world strengths of individual records but to boost one of the record’s chart position at the expense of the other. The listener to that station suffers, albeit painlessly, by hearing one of the songs much more often. Maybe three or four times a day more than they would normally while being deprived (again this is not life or death to the listener) of hearing one of their favorites. This may go on for a full week or just a few days, but it is wrong.
What if you were a dealer at a Hold ‘Em game in Las Vegas and you decided to pass one player an extra ace after the flop? One hand. Heck there are going to be scores more in the coming hours so what is one hand going to hurt to help a friend? Well it is not moral. Both players thought the cards played were being dealt fairly. What if the player you slipped the extra ace to agreed to tip you from his winnings or helps you get tickets to the prize fight in the casino later that week? Now this becomes unethical.
Favors should be distributed equally to all parties that can benefit your interests without them being held over their heads. Changing your procedure to accomplish something that is not directly beneficial to your listeners or your responsibilities as a programmer should cause you to pause and ask the question, “If the chart can be manipulated at the top by 10-15 players, then what real value does it hold when you’re using it to program your radio station each week?”

MusicRow No. 1 Song

lee

Lee Brice

Lee Brice parks his latest No. 1, “I Drive Your Truck,” at the top of this week’s MusicRow Chart.
Written by Jessi Alexander, Connie Harrington and Jimmy Yeary, the poignant title is the third single from Brice’s Hard 2 Love album, following previous singles “A Woman Like You” and “Hard to Love.”
MusicRow’s Robert K. Oermann glowingly reviewed the single in November 2012, saying: “This man is turning into a star with every successive disc. He smacked homeruns right out of the ballpark with ‘A Woman Like You and ‘Hard to Love.’ The third single from Brice’s CD is immensely evocative, as a son recalls his deceased dad by driving his truck and listening to their favorite country station. If this doesn’t punch you in your heart, you haven’t got one. Another homer.”

Here’s to many more hits from this extraordinary vocalist and the teams behind him. Congrats!
