Weekly Chart Report (8/17/2012)

Since the first week in June, Flying Island’s Gwen Sebastian has been busy on her summer solo tour. With an appearance on NBC’s “The Voice” under her belt, her single, “Met Him In a Motel Room,” has risen up to No. 40 on this weeks’ CountryBreakout Chart. Gwen is pictured here with tourmate Kix Brooks.

SPIN ZONE
Nothing can sink Little Big Town’s buoyant “Pontoon” right now. (And yes, I’ve got a hundred more bad puns for this one). The summer smash is cruising through a third week as the CountryBreakout Chart’s No. 1 song, even tacking on another 85 spins for good measure. Elsewhere in the top 10, Easton Corbin’s “Lovin’ You Is Fun” moves up to No. 5 and Tim McGraw’s “Truck Yeah” hops to No. 6. Miranda Lambert’s “Fastest Girl In Town” moves 11-8 and Hunter Hayes’ “Wanted” gets a big spin boost to go 14-10.

Other big movers include Carrie Underwood’s “Blown Away” which jumps from 17-13, followed by Jason Aldean’s “Take A Little Ride” at No. 14. Luke Bryan’s “Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye” gets a 31-27 bump, and his Capitol labelmate Dierks Bentley leaps 69-26 with “Tip It On Back.”

And hey, wasn’t there some kind of something that happened earlier this week? An announcement or something? Okay, now I’m just being silly. As expected, Taylor Swift’s shiny new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” makes a big dent, debuting at No. 49 only four days after its release. Also earning strong debuts are Alan Jackson with “You Go Your Way” at No. 70 and Eli Young Band with “Say Goodnight” at No. 72.

John Rich was in Chicago before the taping of CW’s new show “The Next,” where he joins Joe Jonas, Nelly & Gloria Estefan as a celebrity coach. Big & Rich’s current single “That’s Why I Pray” takes CountryBreakout Chart’s No. 11 spot this week. (L-R): Larry Gatlin, WUSN’s Jeff Kapugi, Lisa Dent, WAR’s Lindsay Walleman & Rich.

Easton Corbin is on the road visiting radio to support his single “Lovin’ You Is Fun” and upcoming album All Over The Road, due Sept. 18. (L-R): WLHK HANK/Indianapolis GM Charlie Morgan; PD Bob Richards; MD Fritz Moser; Corbin; Promotions/Marketing Queen Lisa Wall; Radio Hall of Famer JD Cannon; UMG’s Chris Fabiani

Newcomer Stephanie Grace recently visited Dylan and Dana at WZMR/Albany NY to promote her latest single, “Hey There,” which is currently No. 78 on the CountryBreakout Chart. (L-R): Guitar Player Jason Howard, WZMR's Dylan, Stephanie Grace, and WZMR's Dana.

Charlie Cook On Air: Love and Theft and Gloriana

Last week two records were going for the top spot on the chart. Big deal? This happens every week. Yeah, you’re right, but this time it was a big deal because both groups were/would be first time No. 1 acts: Love and Theft, and Gloriana.

Coincidentally both of these acts played an event for us at Disneyland about three years ago when I was at KKGO Radio in Los Angeles. They would both have been considered baby acts at that point but they both blew up the club that night and it was obvious that they were in for the long haul.

There have been a number of changes with both groups. Cheyenne left Gloriana and Lyric Street left Love and Theft. In both cases that could have spelled the end of the groups. In both cases it did not.

I must admit to a long time bias for Gloriana. Rachel is an Orange County, California girl so we got behind them at Go Country as about 70% of the station’s audience is in Orange County.

Additionally I was impressed with how tight their vocals were when they played the Go Country conference room. So much so I called Clarence Spalding and recommended them as an opening act for Brooks and Dunn in LA. I think that this was their biggest show at that point.  That was about three years ago.

I cannot imagine the hard work, the long trips and the sleepless nights that young acts have to endure to keep on track until they become overnight successes.

Three years is a long time. I am sure that it is closer to 5 years for both groups. That is a lot of grinning and gripping with program directors and fans. Always aware that the final turn could be just ahead. (Speaking earlier of Disneyland…ever been in line there where the turn just leads to another 300 yards of more line?)

The Country Music format has seen some acts “just appear” this past year. Brantley Gilbert, Jana Kramer, Hunter Hayes, Kip Moore and others. I doubt that any of these kids would consider themselves to have taken an easy way to the top of the charts and radio airplay.

I have talked to a number of new acts in my role at McVay/Cook and Associates. We have worked with some newcomer acts trying to help them navigate the waters. My first comment is that this is going to be tougher than a trip to the dentist and not as much fun.

There are many “promising acts” on the lower perches of the chart today. I have seen performances by Edens Edge, Maggie Rose, Jaida Dreyer and Glen Templeton. I know that these guys have not had clear paths to the top and I know that they are out there kicking butt at every radio station and small venue.

None of the above acts are going to give up. All of them are just too darn talented.

Just as I tell the acts that we have worked with that this is tough ride and I cannot truly imagine how difficult it is I also cannot imagine turning on a Country Radio station and hearing my song come across my car speakers. Or see my name and song next to a number on the chart.

Congrats to Love and Theft and Gloriana. I suspect that you have not met all of your goals but you are a lot closer than you were at Disneyland three plus years ago.

Weekly Register: Colt Ford’s Declaration

Colt Ford declares his No. 1 spot on the Country Albums chart this week debuting Declaration of Independence with 31k units. This is Ford’s fourth studio album which features collaborations with Jason Aldean, Wanya Morris of Boyz II Men, Kix Brooks, Montgomery Gentry, Jake Owen, Darius Rucker and more. The Average Joes release was produced by Shannon Houchins and Dann Huff.

“I just can’t thank my fans enough for making this record No. 1,” says an emotional Ford. “I believed this was my best album yet, and my fans have just proved I was right. Today is a great day and I am so blessed.”

In other Average Joes news, President Tom Baldrica recently announced he will soon depart his post with his responsibilities being assumed by Tony Morreale, VP, Marketing & Promotions.

Zac Brown Band’s Uncaged holds the No. 2 position on the country album chart with another 31k units sold this week for a total of 432k RTD.

Gloriana’s Thousand Miles Left Behind sold another 10k units following last week’s debut garnering 33k RTD.

Although slipping, total Country album YTD sales over the prior year continue in positive territory at 2.8% while digital albums over last year show an increase of 36.9%

Looking at individual tracks, Little Big Town’s current single “Pontoon” continues grooving this week by selling another 93k units and reaching 883k RTD.

However, the biggest sales story this week isn’t even on the chart (yet). Taylor Swift announced via a live YouTube chat on Monday (8/13) that her new album Red will be released Oct. 22. Her new single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” was also released and is headed for a huge debut. Industry sources believe the song will probably sell over 500k downloads by end of the tracking week this Sunday.

DISClaimer Single Reviews (8/15/12)

Tiffany Houghton, Clayton Gardner

Ask and you shall receive.

In last week’s column, I bemoaned the lack of a DisCovery Award contender. So this week, I got two of them.

Both are Texans. Our Male winner, Clayton Gardner, plies his trade in Lone Star State roadhouses. Our Female winner, Tiffany Houghton, has moved to Music City to record her debut, six-song EP.

Eli Young Band

The Disc of the Day goes to Eli Young Band for its warmly romantic “Say Goodnight.” Kudos for another job well done.

CLAYTON GARDNER/I Won’t Settle Down
Writer: Clayton Gardner/Mack Damon; Producer: none listed; Publisher: none listed; CG (www.claytongardner.com)
—This breezy bopper with a touch of twang comes from a Texas newcomer with a smooth, confident, easy-going baritone. Promising.

ALI ISABELLA/Say You’ll Be Mine
Writer: Josh Foster/Julie Downs; Producer: Gregory Lattimer & Josh Foster; Publisher: Alisma, BMI; Alisma (track) (www.aliisabella.com)
—She sounds very young and quite pert. You wouldn’t call her a vocal powerhouse by any means, but this lightweight, up-tempo ditty doesn’t require her to be one. Peppy. Innocent.

KATHY MATTEA/West Virginia, My Home
Writer: none listed; Producer: Gary Paczosa; Publisher: none listed; Sugar Hill (track) (www.mattea.com)
—Mattea has scheduled a trio of Music City appearances next month to celebrate the imminent release of her Calling Me Home CD — Sept. 5 at The Bluebird Cafe, Sept. 7 at The Station Inn and Sept. 8 at the Opry House gift shop. In the meantime, this lilting, sweetly sung, acoustic track is doing the advance work on her website. The wafting, guitar-fiddle-mandolin picking by the CD’s all-star band is as heavenly as the singing.

RODNEY HAYDEN/Buckaroo Man
Writer: none listed; Producer: none listed; Publisher: none listed; Palomino
—A single with a built-in identity crisis. The band thinks it is a Southern-rock outfit. He thinks he’s a cowboy.

JERRY KILGORE/Telephone, TX
Writer: Kilgore/Guess; Producer: Jerry Kilgore & James Mitchell; Publisher: none listed; Nic Nic Neer (track)
—I have enjoyed this fellow’s work many times in the past. The title tune of his new CD is a dark and bluesy lament that showcases both his creativity as a songwriter and his charismatic vocal ability. Another winner from a man who seems fully loaded with them.

TIM DUGGER/(I Called Her) Tennessee
Writer: none listed; Producer: none listed; Publisher: none listed; Curb (www.timdugger.com)
—Talk about drawling — you could cut this guy’s Dixie accent with a jack knife. He falls for a college girl who teaches him a thing or two, except her name. The track is your typical rock ‘em, sock ‘em type.

TIFFANY HOUGHTON/Only One
Writer: Tiffany Houghton; Producer: Tiffany Houghton; Publisher: none listed; TH (www.tiffanyhoughton.com)
—She is a true Triple Threat. Her singing is forceful and expressive. Her song writing is solid. Her production finesse on the pulsing, dynamic track is exemplary. She’s Dallas gal who has moved to Music City to make it big. Keep your eyes and ears on her.

NAT STUCKEY/A Hurt as Big as Texas
Writer: Nat Stuckey; Producer: none listed; Publisher: none listed, BMI; Music Roow Talent (track)
—Nat Stuckey (1933-1988) was a country hit maker who died too soon. His widow, Ann, has been keeping his memory alive with reissues of his works. The latest, Words and Music by Nat Stuckey and Friends, includes his three best-known compositions, “Pop a Top,” “Sweet Thang” and “Waitin’ in Your Welfare Line.” Its lesser known tunes include this lively western swinger that will set your toes to tapping. Recommended listening.

ELI YOUNG BAND/Say Goodbye
Writer: Katrina Elam/Melissa Pierce/John Paul White; Producer: Mike Wrucke; Publisher: Songs of Universal/Kreative/Music of Stage Three/Gutter-N-Grace/Roger’s Dream/BMG Chrysalis/EMI Blackwood/Mr. Bright Side, BMI; Republic Nashville (track)
—The Eli Young Band is going from strength to strength. This soaring power ballad wears its ultra-romantic heart on its sleeve. Soul-tugging in every respect. You’re also going to be hearing more from its previous chart topper, “Even If It Breaks Your Heart.” It plays during the opening montage of the TV series Nashville on Wednesday nights this fall on ABC.

DAVID ANDERSEN/Malaguena
Writer: none listed; Producer: David Andersen; Publisher: none listed; Andersongs (track) (www.davidandersenmusic.com)
—Thanks to his daily strolls, strumming in the Conservatory of the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum, guitarist David Andersen is probably the most famous “unknown” musician in Nashville. He has two new CDs, Vituoso and Virtuoso II. The latter contains his deft, easy-listening run through this classical Spanish instrumental standard.

Marcus Hummon’s Pilgrimage—Part 2

MusicRow is excited to share three essays from renowned songwriter Marcus Hummon, which are part of his larger collection, Letters to a Young Songwriter. Hummon’s best known hits include Sara Evans’ “Born to Fly,” Tim McGraw’s “One of These Days,” and Dixie Chicks’ “Ready to Run” and “Cowboy Take Me Away.” Hummon and co-writers Bobby Boyd and Jeff Hanna won a 2005 Grammy for Best Country Song for Rascal Flatts’ “Bless The Broken Road.”

by Marcus Hummon

Seven or eight years ago, I was asked to perform for an annual dinner celebrating Tennessee’s National Guard. There was a stage set in the midst of a huge convention ballroom. I was to perform with another songwriter-artist, a young man who had previously been a Navy Seal. There were over 700 men and women in dress blue uniforms eating and toasting beneath the chandeliers, and after dinner, during dessert and coffee we began the night’s entertainment. It was not lost on me that some of these soldiers would soon police the vicious streets of Iraq…some would not be returning home.

At these affairs you are expected to play “hits,” if you are fortunate enough to have them. So when it came my turn, I started with a song co-written with Darrell Scott and Sara Evans, and sung by Sara on her album of the same title. The song, “Born To Fly,” was used to introduce Vice President Dick Cheney in both the 2000 and 2004 Republican Conventions. The song went off well, but when it came around to me the next time, I decided to play one of my two Dixie Chick singles, “Cowboy Take Me Away.” As I rolled into the opening acoustic guitar arpeggio-riff, the majority of the crowd began to boo lustily! There was a smaller contingent cheering in response, but primarily the ballroom was filled with angry voices displaying displeasure at my choice of songs. I was in something like a state of shock, and uncertain whether or not to continue. I mean, I was actually being booed en masse…at a gig, by a crowd of American soldiers, no less! Just then, the songwriting Navy Seal to my left leaned into the microphone and said, defending me in this very tense moment, “It’s just a song!”

Now here’s the sick part.

Apart from the passions surrounding this moment, as I began to play my song, in open defiance of the booing, I was thinking, “what the hell does he mean, it’s only a song?!” Looking back on the moment, it doesn’t really bother me that the men and women in uniform chose to boo the song that Martie Maguire and I wrote, clearly demonstrating their dislike of the Dixie Chicks, and more specifically, the Chicks’ politics. I didn’t share this perspective back then or now, but I think it’s very exciting when people rise up and express their opinions in a free society. After all, before Natalie Maines was speaking about the President in England, I was out at a rally in Nashville’s Legislative Plaza, expressing my disagreement with our plans to invade Iraq. As American citizens we have a right to speak out in our country, even if one’s position is unpopular. Like most Americans, I’m all for freedom of speech.

But what the hell did he mean “it’s only a song”? Is a song really that meaningless? What’s so disposable about a song…isn’t it living poetry?!

I want to touch the earth/ I want to break it in my hands/ I want to grow something wild and unruly

As usual, I found my ego taking a leading role in the drama at hand. The beauty of the song is its lack of attachment to any particular position, movement, party affiliation, etc.

We are not necessarily concerned with our “time” when we are songwriting; more often than not, we are concerned with things that are timeless. Even a carefree ditty can capture something deep within the human experience; and it is this, our experience of being fully alive, fully present, that we seek.

The journey of the songwriter is about offering some small piece, a short movement in the symphony of our musical and lyrical times, and then, stepping away from it. Our anonymity keeps us honest.

Swift Announces Album, Debuts Single

Taylor Swift announced via a live YouTube chat tonight (8/13) that her new album Red will be released Oct. 22.

The 16-track album includes her new single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” During the live chat, Swift took questions from audience members and Google+ Hangout participants. She dished that the album is full of co-writes, including a duet with Ed Sheeran which they co-wrote on a trampoline.

Swift went on to debut her new single, which she wrote with Max Martin and Shellback.

The single will be available today on iTunes and Google Play, and beginning tomorrow worldwide at all digital retail outlets.

“For the last two years, I’ve been working on an album called Red,” Taylor says. “I called it Red because of the tumultuous, crazy adventures in love and loss that it chronicles. In my mind, when you experience love that’s fast paced and out of control and mixes infatuation, jealousy, frustration, miscommunication, and all of those lovely emotions…in retrospect, it all looks red.”

Album pre-sale dates will be announced in the coming weeks.

Aug/Sept ’12–On The Cover: Kenny Chesney

Kenny Chesney has sold over 30 million albums, nearly 20 million digital transactions and over one million concert tickets every year for eight consecutive years. He’s had 24 No. 1 singles, 10 No. 2 singles and 39 Top 10 singles. His latest single, “Come Over,” was certified Gold in just over 9 weeks, making it the fastest Gold single certification in Chesney’s career. Chesney has won many recent honors including CMT Awards Artist of the Year (2011), CMA Awards Music Video of the Year “You and Tequila” with Grace Potter (2011), and other awards over the years including CMA Entertainer of the Year, ACM Entertainer of the Year, People’s Choice Awards Favorite Male Singer, American Music Awards Artist of the Year and more.

Chesney’s 13th studio album, Welcome to the Fishbowl, delivers great songs penned by Chesney himself and a diverse mix of top-shelf songwriters. Chesney, who produced the album with longtime collaborator Buddy Cannon, says that in making the album he felt “solid in his skin” in his roles as songwriter, producer and interpreter of songs. “I’d been through a lot emotionally since Hemingway’s Whiskey came out, and I think that’s reflected in this record,” he says. “My main goal when I went into the studio was to be honest with my fans and myself as a songwriter and a creative person. I do feel like, now more than ever, that I’m comfortable at being authentic, wherever that leads me. That’s why I’m proud of this record, because every song on it has been an evolution.”

Chesney says striking a balance between taking his fans in new directions and giving them what they want is a conscious choice that he specifically strived for on the previous album. “When you’ve been as blessed as I’ve been with all the songs I’ve had on the radio, it would be really easy to internally get complacent,” Chesney admits. “Any artist could be tempted to say, ‘this is what’s always worked, so this is what I’m gonna do.’ But, especially before I went in to cut Hemingway’s Whiskey, I realized that I just can’t keep re-releasing ‘Beer in Mexico’ every time. That song has its place, I love it and I’m proud I wrote it. But I really felt like it was time for me as an artist to find songs and write songs where the melodies were different and what it was saying was different. To be able to push myself as an artist, and more importantly push my audience but not alienate them, that’s a fine line to walk. And I think we did that with [Whiskey’s] ‘Somewhere with You’ and ‘You and Tequila,’ and I think there are several moments on this record that will do that, too.”

Chesney welcomes both veteran fans and newbies. “I’m excited about the people that have been on this train with me a long time, listened to my music, dreamed this dream with me and saw everything that has happened,” he says. “I’m excited for them to hear this music and the evolution of where it’s at, and where I’m going. And I’m also excited for those people that are at their first show, that never bought one of my records, that don’t know anything about me at all. If Welcome to the Fishbowl is their first Kenny Chesney record, I’m really glad that this is their first one. I’m that proud of it.”

Weekly Chart Report (8/10/12)

Carrie Underwood visited with KCYY/San Antonio APD Jeff Roper while on the road to promote “Blown Away,” which lands at No. 17 on the CountryBreakout Chart this week.

SPIN ZONE
There are still plenty of good summer days left, and Little Big Town’s “Pontoon” recognizes that by staying anchored in the CountryBreakout Chart’s No. 1 spot for a second consecutive week. But Love and Theft might soon be ready to steal the title away, as the duo’s “Angel Eyes” ascends to No. 2 with a total of 3286 spins. Zac Brown Band’s “The Wind” blows right in to the No. 3 spot, followed by Lady Antebellum’s “Wanted You More” at No. 4.

As always, there are a handful of the format’s heavy hitters moving quickly up the chart. But like Love and Theft, there are also an impressive number of new artists making inroads. Jana Kramer’s “Why Ya Wanna” has been charting nearly 30 weeks, and just jumped to No. 7 with a gain of almost 150 spins. Kramer’s WMN labelmate Hunter Hayes is on his second single with “Wanted,” and he rises to No. 14 with a big gain. Just behind Hayes at No. 15 and 16 are Republic Nashville’s Greg Bates with “Did It For the Girl” and Broken Bow’s Dustin Lynch with “Cowboys and Angels,” respectively.

Most of these newcomers are male solo or duo acts, like Jon Pardi (No. 23), Florida Georgia Line (No. 25), or Kip Moore (No. 33). But like Jana Kramer, a few solo female or female-fronted acts are getting some traction. RCA Nashville’s Joanna Smith is performing well at No. 21 with “We Can’t Be Friends” after 21 weeks charting. Big Machine’s Edens Edge is also moving quickly at No. 25 with second single “Too Good To Be True,” and Gwen Sebastian’s “Met Him in a Motel Room” is at No. 41. On the way are new offerings from Miss Willie Brown (No. 56) and Kelleigh Bannen (No. 59).

Little Big Town’s “Pontoon” shows no signs of slowing its mmmmmmm…motorboatin’ sales by moving another 94k units to reach 789k RTD. The group’s album Tornado, slated for a September 11 release, will be one to watch as we currently wade through an overall summer sales slump these past few weeks.

Last week’s numbers included Love and Theft’s self-titled album which debuted at No. 4 on the country chart and No. 21 overall selling 14k units. The duo, comprised of Stephen Barker Liles and Eric Gunderson, is enjoying the success of lead single “Angel Eyes” co-written by Jeff Coplan and Eric Paslay, which has now sold 521k units RTD.

Just like in the Olympics, we love to look at our stats. Unfortunately the overall numbers seem to be slipping. Unlike the coach’s inquiry filed this week in the balance beam competition which gave the U.S.A. a changed higher score and took the bronze literally away from Romania, we don’t have that option. Our YTD album sales year over year have fallen from 6% increase as of 7/15 to 3.8% increase as of 8/5. On the positive side, our digital albums year over year increase remains strong at 15.8%, increasing a bit over the last few weeks.

Stay tuned.
