DISClaimer: Indie Acts Take The Spotlight

The wait is over.

Week after week, country music’s indie-label artists wait in a long line behind releases by major-label artists in the DisClaimer column. This week, 10 of those indies get noticed.

Highlights include the releases by Sister Hazel and column newcomers Tyler Resch and Josh Pruno.

But the day belongs to two guitar aces named Eddie. Our DisCovery Award goes to Eddie Heinzelman. And my longtime fave Eddie Bush wins the Disc of the Day prize.

JOSH PRUNO/Just A Minute Ago
Writers: Josh Pruno/Lew Garrison/Jack Williams; Producers: Pruno/John Willis/Jack Williams; Publishers: moboymusic, ASCAP; JP (track)
– Sweet nostalgia, delivered in an aching tenor. The twang-guitar, tinkling piano and sighing steel interludes are dandy, too. Well worth your attention. Josh’s record-release party takes place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16 at B.B. King’s.

RICK MONROE/Smoke Out The Window
Writers: Adam Craig, Rick Monroe, Isacc Rich; Producer: JD Shuff; Publisher: none listed; Thermal
– The bass-heavy production nicely underscores his snarly “outlaw” vocal vibe on this title tune to his latest collection. The galloping electric guitar is also on the money.

SISTER HAZEL/Life and Love
Writers: Ken Block/Trent Summar; Producers: Sister Hazel & Ben Jackson; Publishers: Crooked Chimney/Songs of Universal/Songs of NTN, BMI
– This five-piece band is one of country’s indie success stories. With more than a million followers on social media, a guest appearance on the Opry and a Platinum album already to its credit, Sister Hazel returns with a seven-song EP titled Fire. This uplifting track features the group’s characteristic close-harmony vocal work and Block’s forceful lead. I got so hooked that I played the whole collection twice through.

EDDIE BUSH/Love That Remains The Same
Writers: Eddie Bush; Producer: Dave Matthews; Publisher: none listed; EB
– This guitar slinger has backed many Music City greats while also releasing a long string of solo CDs. The title tune of his latest features his hearty, warm vocal delivery as well as his sizzling, fleet-fingered guitar flash. Exciting is the only word that will do. Catch Eddie next Wednesday with Marcus Hummon at the Country Music Hall of Fame’s “Greatest Show Ever” event.

EDDIE HEINZELMAN/Wherever You Go
Writers: Eddie Heinzelman/Radney Foster; Producers: Heinzelman/Casey Wood; One Louder
-Heinzelman plays guitar and mandolin for Radney Foster on the road, and Radney is his collaborator on this title tune of the sideman’s sophomore solo CD. The rolling, rollicking number showcases a jaunty, engaging vocalist and some splendid slide guitar as well as a terrific, multi-layered production. Foster and American Idol alumnus Kendra Chantelle provide splendid backup singing. I guarantee you’ll fall for this. Eddie appears with Radney on Feb. 15 at City Winery, then has a show with his Band of Brothers at the Fillin’ Station in Kingston Springs on Feb. 22.

DEARLING/Silver and Gold
Writers: Rachel Jones; Producer: Dave Preston/Rachel James; Publisher: none listed; Dearling
– Fronted by the husband-wife duo of Dave Preston and Rachel James, this Denver band stirs up an echoey, polished sound on its EP. The title tune is lilting and lovely. The only drawback with this and Rachel’s other songs here is that they seem rather wordy and take a long time to get to their hooks.

MARTY BROWN/Umbrella Lovers
Writers: Jon Tiven/Marty Brown; Producers: Jon Tiven/Marty Brown; Publishers: Lead Pencil Publishing (BMI) admin by Sony/ATV / Uncontrolled Compositions (BMI), admin by Kobalt; Plowboy
– This fellow made some noise on MCA in the 1990s. His comeback single combines country romance with beach imagery. The relaxed atmosphere in the track contrasts with his urgent, in-your-face vocal delivery. It’s a little jarring, but you get used to it.

TYLER RESCH/Honkytonk Overtime
Writers: Tyler Resch/Byron Hill; Producer: Byron Hill; Publisher: Triage/Ramber American/DHM, ASCAP; BHP
– The latest discovery by Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame member Byron Hill steps out with a collection titled Highways and Honkytonks. This toe-tapping standout tune from it boasts frothing guitar accompaniment, a blue-collar lyric and a sincere vocal delivery. So wonderfully catchy that you want to dance around the room while it spins. Get to know this guy’s music.

TIFFANY WILLIAMS/When You Go
Writers: Tiffany Williams; Producer: Britton Patrick Morgan; Publisher: none listed; Blue Redbird
– Her languid contralto delivers this acoustic ode to coal country with sad grace. It’s the title tune of a five-song EP that introduces a singular songwriting talent. Mournful yet lovely. Tiffany performs at Alley Taps on Monday, Feb. 18.

JEFF CLAYBORN/Caddy In The Campground
Writers: Clayborn/Betsy Walter/Chuck Ebert; Producer: Ebert; Publisher: none listed; Cabin
– Rockin’ country with a decided attitude. It’s about a slumming daddy’s girl checking out the macho Texas music man.

Shannon Sanders, Nashville Urban Choir Celebrate Black History Month With Release Of “Fight On”

The Nashville Urban Choir performed at the recent CMA Awards, as part of a collaboration with Chris Stapleton, Morgane Stapleton, Marty Stuart, Maren Morris and Mavis Staples.

Shannon Sanders and the Nashville Urban Choir have released a powerful new anthem, “Fight On.” The song is being released on Feb. 8 in honor of and in celebration of Black History Month. Written and performed by Sanders, “Fight On” is the first of many releases to come from the newly-inked partnership between Blue Rose Music and Sanders.

“Nashville has become a national story for many reasons, and we saw a great opportunity with Shannon to work with someone who has deep roots in the city, with a sterling reputation and a track record of hit songs, who makes it possible for us to plug into a pool of undiscovered talent,” says Blue Rose Music founder, Joe Poletto.

The video for “Fight On” features footage of the choir performing at the legendary Fisk University Chapel juxtaposed with scenes of Sanders, a lifetime Nashvillian, attacking a stream of vocal gymnastics in gritty, insider locations around town. The clip also features an epic scene of Sanders performing on Nashville’s iconic John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge.

The Nashville Urban Choir, the creative brainchild of Sanders, symbolizes a growing and maturing city, one with a newfound respect and appreciation for the stylistic breadth of music that has always been created in Nashville’s urban neighborhoods but is just starting to be recognized. Featuring a revolving cast of independent and up-and-coming artists from a variety of genres, the choir’s diverse voices come together to experience moments conceived and executed by Sanders’ vision. They can be heard on upcoming recordings from Kaleo, as well as several Dave Cobb-produced albums including Rival Sons and Robert Randolph. The group capped off 2018 with a performance at the 2018 CMA Awards with Chris and Morgane Stapleton with Gospel legend Mavis Staples, Maren Morris, and Marty Stuart, who played Pop Staples’ guitar.

“Many music creators move here to pursue a career in the industry, but for me it all started here. Nobody here was interested in promoting hip-hop or R&B until the bottom fell out of the record industry and diversity was the only option to maintain the city’s robust musical eco-system. Now people are becoming more aware of all of the great music that has always had roots here,” said Sanders. “There is a need for cultural authenticity in Nashville, beyond the borders of the Music Row’s status quo. I am particularly excited about partnering with Blue Rose Music. What is most powerful is that we share similar values in that our appreciation for music and our desire to have a positive cultural impact supersede our commercial aspiration.”

Willie Nelson was feted at the Recording Academy Producers & Engineers Wing’s annual Grammy Week celebration yesterday (Feb. 6) at The Village Studios in West Los Angeles. Now in its 12th year, the event celebrated the artistic achievements and creative genius of Nelson and also acknowledged the overall industry contributions of the Producers & Engineers Wing’s more than 6,400 professional members.

Kacey Musgraves, Dave Matthews, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Ziggy Marley, Lisa Loeb, Feist, and Diane Warren were all on hand for the celebration to help honor the beloved music icon. While introducing Willie Nelson, Musgraves spoke to the crowd about Nelson’s keen ability to unite people from all demographics; from women to men, rappers and Presidents. She told a quick story about when she inquisitively asked him, “Why didn’t you run for President?” and Willie responded matter of factly, “Because I’d win!” The room full of industry guests burst out in agreeable laugher.

Dave Matthews surprised the crowd with a stripped down version of Nelson’s song, “Funny How Time Slips Away,” and Willie closed out the show by joining Matthews and performing alongside his sons Lukas and Micah singing, “Living In the Promise Land.”

“Willie is an incomparable songwriter, musician and producer, and he has amassed admirable credentials as an author, actor, and activist, and he continues to thrive as a relevant and progressive musical and cultural force,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of the Recording Academy. “Since I began my career in this industry, and certainly since taking leadership of the Recording Academy in 2002, I have been privileged to work with artists who expand their craft into larger issues. Willie is one of the icons, and he has been a standard-bearer for all of us.”

Grammy Week culminates with the 61st Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, Feb. 10 which airs live on CBS at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Spotify Posts First Operating Profit, Reaches 96 Million Paying Subscribers In Fourth Quarter

Spotify revealed that the digital service provider finished 2018 with 96 million paying subscribers, a 25 million increase year-over-year. In 2018’s fourth quarter, Spotify added 9 million subscribers. The company reported it expects to finish the first quarter of 2019 with an estimate of between 97 million and 100 million subscribers globally, with an estimate of 117 million to 127 million by the end of the year. The company estimated it will end 2019 with a monthly active user tally of between 245 million to 265 million.

The company also revealed it made its first operational profit since launching in Sweden in 2008, revealing a profit of 94 million euros ($107 million) in the fourth quarter of 2018, driven by lower operating costs, which declined by 17 percent year over year.

The company’s gross profit margin was 26.7 percent in the 2018 Q4, though this is expected to erode to somewhere between 22.5-24.5 during the first quarter of 2019. The company posted a net profit of 442 million euros during the final quarter of 2018.

As reported earlier, Spotify has also acquired podcast companies Gimlet and Anchor, believing 20 percent of all listening on Spotify will eventually involve something other than music.

Carrie Underwood’s “The Champion” Certified Platinum

Carrie Underwood’s event anthem “The Champion” featuring Ludacris has reached Platinum status on the anniversary of the song’s 2018 Super Bowl debut. Underwood co-wrote the tune with fellow songwriters Brett James, Chris DeStefano, and Christopher Bridges (PKA Ludacris), who Underwood asked to collaborate on the song.

The song reached No. 1 on the iTunes Top Songs chart in 10 countries including the U.S., where it held the top spot throughout its release week then rose back to the top of the chart for four consecutive days after the Super Bowl LII opening. The song also debuted Top 5 on the all-genre Top 200 Digital Songs chart and reached No. 7 on the Spotify US Viral 50 Chart with over 151 million streams to date. NBC Sports incorporated “The Champion” into its coverage of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.

The song’s video, directed by Jimmy Lynch, won CMT’s 2018 Video Music Award for Female Video of the Year.  “The Champion” is featured as a bonus track on Underwood’s album Cry Pretty. Released in September 2018, Cry Pretty marked Underwood’s first studio album on Capitol Records Nashville, and debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Top Country Album Charts. The album was named the biggest all-genre debut by a female in 2018.
