Zach Diaz Named Head Of Streaming At Soundstripe

Zach Diaz

Seasoned music industry member Zach Diaz has joined Soundstripe as Head of Streaming.

In his new role, he will bring his extensive experience at Red Bull Records as well as Sony Music Entertainment’s RED Distribution and The Orchard to Soundstripe, overseeing all of the company’s activities with digital service providers, including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and more.

Prior to joining Soundstripe, Diaz held multiple positions in the independent distribution and label space, working with all major digital music services on the front lines of the industry’s transition to a subscription-based model. After an early career in artist management, Diaz entered the account management space in 2013, spending five years at Sony Music Entertainment’s RED Distribution and The Orchard overseeing DSP relationships for some of the industry’s most acclaimed independent labels. In 2018, Diaz spent two years at Red Bull Records as vice president of Global Digital Account Management and overseeing DSP relations and strategy. While at Red Bull, he worked closely with a wide array of artists including AWOLNATION, The Aces, Albert Hammond Jr., Beartooth, and Blxt.

“Zach is an incredible addition to the Soundstripe team,” says VP Music at Soundstripe Jay Harren. “His knowledge of the music streaming landscape and strong relationships within the industry promise to further accelerate Soundstripe’s audience growth on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and other platforms. We’re delighted to welcome him aboard.”

“I couldn’t be more excited to join Soundstripe,” says Diaz. “Soundstripe’s deep catalog of high-quality music – including thousands of lofi, chill and mood tracks – is well positioned to significantly scale on music streaming services. I’m looking forward to working with all DSP’s to continue growing Soundstripe’s booming listenership.”

On The Row: Ashlie Amber Embraces ‘Country Vogue’

Ashlie Amber

Newcomer Ashlie Amber is burgeoning a country sub-genre of her own, an infusion of glamorous bravado into traditional country music that she calls ‘country vogue.’

The entertainer grew up in Colorado, listening to the music of The Spinners, the Bee Gees, Whitney Houston, and Earth, Wind & Fire, before discovering country music via a Tim McGraw song, “Where The Green Grass Grows.” Amber was hooked, eventually leading her to love the music of Garth Brooks, LeAnn Rimes and Shania Twain.

Following her love of Whitney Houston, Amber created her own headliner tribute show to celebrate the vocal. Her show grew to be one of the best acts in international waters landing her a residency onboard one of the worlds acclaimed cruise lines and ships, The Celebrity Edge, a $1.2 billion vessel touring Europe and the Caribbean. It was there Amber earned her performing chops.

In a recent virtual visit with MusicRow, Amber talked about her journey to country music and how she plans to excel in a genre that has historically stifled Black, and female, voices.

“A lot of people say, ‘We don’t want this in country, we don’t want that in country.’ I’m like ‘Well, you must realize that that’s already in country,'” Amber says. “The genre has already changed, it has already evolved with or without us. So it’s just really nice to be able to get to do country, but still have the R&B flair because of course I still have those as part of my roots. Fusing the two together and bringing pop into the mix, it’s so much fun because country music at its core is just about great stories, great music, using live instruments, and just having fun.”

Working with Grammy and Emmy-winning producer Jamie Tate, Amber has released previous singles “Almost Love,” “My Revenge,” and “Fight With You.” The latter, a  tune written by Mary Haller, Lo and Avrim “Ave” Topel, shows off the tender parts of Amber’s rangey voice.

All of Amber’s music, and her charismatic personality, reflects her ‘country vogue’ motif. She credits Shania Twain for starting the sub-genre. “She really started the sub-genre, I just put a name to it,” Amber says.

“There’s somebody in Nashville who said that I wasn’t authentic enough. I actually knew exactly what he meant by what he said. I understand that I’m not the traditional country image. I rock a giant fro-hawk, come on. I’m very curvy and I’m very edgy, I’m not that girl next door. So instead of trying to fight that and try to be like that, I’m like, ‘You know what, you’re right.’ I’m not traditional country. I’m country vogue. My music is country, at its core it’s country. The stories that I’m telling are country, but I’m also fashion.”

“I don’t quite fit in, but I don’t want to. I grew up in a predominantly white neighborhood, we were the only Black family. I have never fit in my entire life. So why would I start now?”

Amber recently celebrated the first self-penned release of her career with her newest single, “Those Nights,” along with the launch of her publishing company Diva Music Group. Universal songwriter Morgan Matthews—who recently celebrated a No. 1 song as the producer of Alicia Keys and Miguel’s “Show Me Love”—composed the music for “Those Nights.”

“A lot of my writing and even the song selections that I didn’t write, I like to keep things very positive. I think music should be a celebration,” Amber says. “I just wanted to write about the good side of the relationship instead of always focusing on the breakup. I wanted to celebrate those early stages.”

Jenny Tolman Returns To ‘The Neighborhood’ With Deluxe Edition Of Debut Album

Jenny Tolman is giving fans a chance to be reintroduced to Jennyville, the outrageous fictional town at the heart of her debut project, when the deluxe version of her album, There Goes the Neighborhood, is released with three bonus tracks April 9.

The album is stacked with high-energy tunes interspersed with heartfelt ballads drawn from life experiences. Among the three new tunes is “Still Gonna Die,” an up-tempo cover of a song written by Shel Silverstein and initially performed by country supergroup Old Dogs (Waylon Jennings, Mel Tillis, Bobby Bare, Jerry Reed) in 1988. Tolman remembers hearing the song on Willie’s Roadhouse, a SiriusXM Radio channel, and started closing every show with it as a grateful nod to those who paved the way in the comedic music genre.

Another new track, “Who’ll Be Your Fool” features Opry legend Jeannie Seely in a wistful ballad written from the perspective of a woman contemplating who her lover’s next woman will be. Rounding out the trio of new songs is “Tabitha,” one of the first songs Tolman ever completed (at age 18 in 2014) that helped build her fan base on social media, though she had never recorded it other than as a live performance.

“As 2020 went on,” Tolman says, “instead of continuing to wallow in self-pity, I decided we had to keep moving forward. Selfishly, I wasn’t ready to give up on this album—I knew there were so many people who hadn’t even heard of it—so Dave [Brainard, her producer and now fiancé] and I came up with this idea to add three new songs to the original 13-track album and promote it as a deluxe version. For all the people who have never heard the album, there’s plenty here for you to discover, and for the people who have heard the album, there are three new songs I’m excited to share with you.”

Tolman’s first hometown show in over a year will be in-person and live-streamed from The Local in Nashville on Wednesday, April 7 at 6 p.m. CT.

DISClaimer Single Reviews: Maddie & Tae, Brandy Clark, Georgia Webster

It’s a country-music Ladies’ Day here at DisClaimer.

Women are making a lot of the most interesting music in this genre these days, and today’s listening session was a good illustration of that.

It is not even a single, but Brandy Clark wins the Disc of the Day prize for her extraordinarily moving “Remember Me Beautiful.” It is is for everyone who has had to say farewell to Mom.

If you must have a bona fide single release for the week’s Disc award, give it to Maddie & Tae for their sprightly, feisty “Woman You Got.”

The DisCovery Award also goes to a female artist. That would be Georgia Webster, who is definitely a highly promising new talent around these parts.

AUSTIN TOLLIVER / “Yodelay You Down”
Writers: Austin Tolliver/Chase J.; Producer: Maxim Laskavy; Label: Average Joes Entertainment
— It has both a delightful twang and a can’t miss dance-floor beat. Electronics and acoustics combine for a highly infectious, imaginative track. Just one question: Should you build a song around the word “yodelay” when you can’t yodel?

ASHLEY McBRYDE / “Shut Up Sheila (live)”
Writers: Nicolette Hayford/Charles Chisholm; Producer: none listed; Label: Warner Music Nashville
— This has been a favorite of mine in her catalog ever since the first time I heard it. This live version amps it up into a barn burner. One of the all-time coolest—and most offbeat—country songs about a funeral.

TYLER BRADEN / “What Do They Know”
Writers: Tyler Braden/Aaron Scherz; Producer: Randy Montana; Label: Warner Music Nashville
— This uplifting fist pumper is about chasing your dreams, no matter how discouraging those around might be. Braden alternates conversational verses with top-of-his-range vocal soaring on the choruses. Very effective.

HUNTER HAYES / “If You Change Your Mind”
Writers: Hunter Hayes/Johnluke Lewis/Rachel Braig; Producer: Hunter Hayes/Ruslan Odnoralov; Label: LP Entertainment
— Kinda pop. Kinda “teen.” Kinda slick. Kinda generic.

SCOOTER BROWN BAND / “Country At All”
Writers: Scott E. Brown/Tim Montana; Producer: Scooter Brown & Zach Farnum; Label: 117 Entertainment/Orchard
— This slow moving, almost plodding, ditty calls out contemporary “country” for straying too far from good ole boys, outlaws and three chords and the truth. Putting a bit more tempo to it would have made it hit harder.

BRANDY CLARK / “Remember Me Beautiful”
Writers: Liz Rose/Brandy Clark/Hillary Lindsey/Lori McKenna; Producer: Jay Joyce; Label: Warner Records
— Brandy introduced this on the Opry last weekend, and it left me speechless with tears on my face. It’s a track from the Deluxe edition of her Grammy-nominated Your Life Is a Record CD, which was already a perfect album. Now it’s super perfect. This powerfully emotional gem could become an everlasting anthem for every Mama’s funeral.

ANDREW JANNAKOS / “Wine Country”
Writers: Andrew Jannakos/Jason Afable/Eric Mallon/Alex Pennington Smith; Producer: Derek Wells; Label: RCA Nashville
— This is a warm, low-key, drowsy romantic ballad with an intimate vocal performance. Relaxing in the extreme. Raise a glass or pass out. Your call.

JOHN SCHNEIDER / “Born at a Truck Stop”
Writers: Jacob Lyda/Brian Maher/Bill Shore; Producer: none listed; Label: BFD/Audium
— Actor/singer Schneider’s upcoming album will benefit trucker charities. This toe-tapper from the concept CD boasts plenty of twanging electric guitar and a dandy lyric. A good-time, gospel-tinged rouser.

GEORGIA WEBSTER / “Push & Pull”
Writers: Georgia Webster; Producer: Paul DiGiovanni; Label: River House Artists/Sony Music Nashville
— Enchanting. Her sweet/tart soprano has folk overtones and hidden strength. The production is a nicely layered acoustic thumper. In the lyric, she’s just gotta get outta this relationship, pal, while she still has feelings for you. Send more.

MADDIE & TAE / “Woman You Got”
Writers: Maddie Font/Taylor Kerr/Laura Veltz/Mark Holman; Producer: Derek Wells/Jimmy Robbins; Label: Mercury Nashville
— The duo kicks off their 2021 with a groove-saturated, upbeat, joyous celebration of womanly things. She’s a steadfast lover, a doll collector, a risk-taking wild child, a mess maker, a non-cook, an emotional roller coaster and a multifaceted kook. All to a crazy-good beat.

KYLE ELLIOTT / “Come On Over”
Writers: Kyle Elliott; Producer: none listed; Label: KE
— He has a luxuriously rich baritone that he puts to good advantage on this hooky, well-produced, midtempo romantic outing. Promising.

JUSTIN MOORE / “She Ain’t Mine No More”
Writers: Justin Moore/Paul DiGionvanni/Jamie Paulin/Jeremy Stover; Producer: Jeremy Stover; Label: Valory
— “We Didn’t Have Much” remains the current single. This new track is a second sneak peek at his upcoming album Straight Outta the Country. It’s rolling ride down Heartbreak Highway with plenty of oomph and drive. Highly recommended.

“Round Hill has always been on the front edge of where the music business is headed and I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the team,” says Crowell.

Country Rewind Records Release Tex Williams Album, ‘Smokin’ Country Swing – The Lost Tracks’

Country Rewind Records has released Tex Williams Smokin’ Country Swing – The Lost Tracks as part of the labels Western Heritage Collection.

Williams was a western swing performer that helped to country music from its rural, acoustic origins to a more danceable, electrified form with a much wider popular appeal. Prescription Songs Adds Chris Martignago As Senior Member Of A&R Team, Ups Rachel Wein [Exclusive]

Chris Martignago, Rachel Wein

Prescription Songs’ Head of A&R Nashville, Katie Fagan, has announced that Chris Martignago has been hired on as a senior member of the A&R team. Meanwhile, Rachel Wein has also been promoted to A&R manager.

Martignago comes to Prescription Songs to help develop the company’s expanding roster. Prior to joining the company, he spent time at Atlantic Records where he helped sign talent under SVP of A&R Steve Robertson’s (Paramore, Shinedown) mentorship. He also helped develop the A&R research sector of the company as director of the department.

Martignago started out as a musician and songwriter before attending Full Sail University in Orlando, Florida where he graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in music business. In 2015, he relocated to Nashville, signing artists in town, collaborating with the creative community through projects, volunteering his time to local arts programs, and involved himself in managing R.LUM.R. Now joining the team at Prescription Songs, Martignago will continue his efforts in guiding creative visions throughout Nashville and the rest of the world.

Wein, in her new role as A&R Manager, will continue to support the many talents she was instrumental in signing, including Tim Gent, Bryant Taylor, carobae, James Droll and Megan Redmond, and will continue to grow the company’s roster. Wein joined Prescription Songs in 2017 as Fagan’s first hire in their Nashville office.

“We’re so excited for this next chapter at Prescription. Chris has been a longtime friend and colleague since I arrived in Nashville, so to have him now officially part of the team is really exciting. He has introduced us to unsigned writers over the years during his time at Atlantic, so I know he will thrive as a publisher and I’m excited to see him excel here,” says Fagan. “As for Rachel, I’ve watched her grow from my assistant to now being an A&R. She has been an integral part of our company’s growth over the past four years. I know her passion for songwriters and songs will continue for years to come and am honored to have her on our team.”

John Rich Launches Redneck Spirits Group

John Rich has announced the launch of Redneck Spirits Group, a venture to send Redneck Riviera liquors nationwide.

The new entity, partnered with Bonavita Beverage Group of Louisville, Ky., will offer popular Redneck Riviera and Granny Rich Reserve Whiskeys, and ready to drink Howdy Dew!, an 8% ABV flavored malt beverage.

“Our motto is, ‘Work Hard, Play Hard’ and that is what the team at Redneck Riviera has done,” says Rich. “Since we launched in 2018, we have been honored with awards and deemed one of the fastest growing American whiskey brands on the market. Today, we are proud to announce a new chapter with the Redneck Spirits and Bonavita Beverage Group. It is an exciting time for the Redneck Riviera brand, and we are looking forward to building an even larger footprint with our new partners in Kentucky.”

Since the launch of Redneck Riviera Whiskey in 2018, the brand has seen a lot of growth. In less than 18 months, the brand has gone from a regional to a national brand in over 40 states. The new partnership will allow the brand to go to the next level.

Folds of Honor will continue to receive a portion of every bottle sold. To date, Redneck Riviera bottle sales has helped fund over 100 scholarships to children and spouses of our fallen and disabled heroes.

“We are thrilled to be part of the Redneck Riviera team as we help build the next chapters with John,” says Kevin Sachs, one of the principal founders of Bonavita Beverage Group. “After one short meeting, we felt immediate chemistry and like-mindedness. What John and his team has accomplished by bringing a product into a competitive market in a unique fashion in a very short period of time is remarkable. RRW is becoming one of the great success stories in American whiskey and brand creation in recent years. The Bonavita Beverage Group was formed in 2020 for the express purpose of scaling craft brands. We knew we could help take Redneck Riviera to the next level. For us, this is not another “celebrity brand,” but a lifestyle brand with depth and roots that truly stands for something, and is the essence of John Rich—proudly American, patriotic, rugged, blue collar, work hard, play hard. The connection to Folds of Honor is sincere, authentic, humble and respectful.”
