DISClaimer Single Reviews: The Isaacs Give A Handful Of Hope On ‘Humpty Dumpty Heart’

It’s a pop-country day here at DISClaimer.

With Maren Morris, The Brethren, Ya’Boyz and CB30 setting the pace, there was plenty of youthful verve in the listening session. And CB30 caps it by winning this week’s DISCovery Award.

That said, there was still some dandy regulation-country listening. Most especially from Chapel Hart, Jake Owen, Drew Parker and our Disc of the Day winners, The Isaacs.

THE BRETHREN / “Staring at Stars”
Writers: Chad Chapin/Lonnie Chapin/Casey Parnell/Corey Parnell/Brian White/Barry Zito; Producer: The Brethren; Label: OneRPM
–Beautifully harmonized and lushly melodic, this bit of pop-country ear candy evokes summer romance and vacation joy. The luxurious, layered production ain’t exactly down home, but it is mighty, mighty pretty.

DONNA FARGO / “One of the Good Guys”
Writers: Donna Fargo; Producer: Stan Silver; Label: PrimaDonna
–Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Donna Fargo is renowned for “Funny Face,” “The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA” and a string of other hits in the 1970s and 1980s. Her career was a partnership with husband/manager/producer Stan Silver, whom she lost to COVID last year. Donna’s new All Because of You EP contains the songs they were working on at the time of his death. It leads off with this celebration of his love. The tenor-sax riffs in the arrangement add depth to her sweetly sincere, heartfelt delivery.

YA’BOYZ / “Ya’Boyz”
Writers: Zach Kale/Joe Ragosta/Joseph Patton/Nick Zinnanti; Producers: Zach Kale/Joe Ragosta/NCKSZN; Label: MCA/Republic
–This energetic collaboration features High Valley, Filmore, Levi Hummon, Kyle Clark and Jojo Mason. Group members Kale and Ragosta lead the way on a loud, backwoods banger that sports rock percussion, hick-hop vocals and plenty of redneck imagery. Rowdy and fun sounding, if not exactly my cup of tea.

DYLAN SCOTT / “Livin’ My Best Life”
Writers: Tyler Hubbard/Brian Kelley/Thomas Rhett/Corey Crowder; Producers: Will Weatherly/Matt Alderman/Jim Ed Norman/Curt Gibbs/Mark Holman; Label: Curb
–Considering the quality he previously displayed on “Nobody,” “Can’t Have Mine,” “My Girl,” “Crazy Over Me” and the splendid current rocker “New Truck,” the title tune of Scott’s upcoming album is a bit of a disappointment. The generic production kinda goes in one ear and out the other.

CHAPEL HART / “Made For Me”
Writers: Danica Hart/Devynn Hart/Trea Swindle; Producers: Jack Meile/Brentt Arcement; Label: CH
–This joyous bopper traces the totally talented trio’s journey from Poplarville, Mississippi to New Orleans. From there, these gifted gals made the trip to Music City, where surely country stardom awaits. The hooky song is irresistible. The production is dandy. The vocals are splendid. Chapel Hart rules.

MAREN MORRIS / “Humble Quest”
Writers: Jimmy Robbins/Maren Morris/Laura Veltz; Producer: Greg Kurstin; Label: Columbia
–The title tune of Morris’s new album is a moody, oblique thumper. It sounds like she continues to aspire to pop stardom.

BRANTLEY GILBERT & JASON ALDEAN / “Rolex on a Redneck”
Writers: Brantley Gilbert/Brock Berryhill/Michael Hardy/Randy Montana/Taylor Phillips; Producers: Brock Berryhill/Brantley Gilbert; Label: Valory
–All the brand-name shout-outs can’t disguise the overwhelming dullness of this tuneless, repetitive outing. I was so bored I practically nodded off.

THE ISAACS / “Humpty Dumpty Heart”
Writers: Sonya Isaacs/Becky Isaacs Bowman/Ronnie Bowman; Producers: Ben Isaacs/Bryan Sutton; Label: House of Isaacs
–These new Grand Ole Opry members sing like angels. With Sonya’s celestial soprano leading the way, the group’s harmonies carry this lilting message along while mandolin, guitar, dobro and bass ripple rhythmically. Heartbroken? Pick yourself up, put the pieces back together and carry on.

HANK WILLIAMS JR. / “.44 Special Blues”
Writers: Robert Johnson; Producer: Dan Auerbach; Label: Easy Eye Sound
–Bocephus has always been a bluesman at heart, and that is what is celebrated on his upcoming album. Producer Auerbach recorded him live, singing and playing classics as well as new songs. This advance single is as pure and unadulterated as can be.

JAKE OWEN / “Up There Down Here”
Writers: Zach Dyer/Summer Overstreet/Travis Wood; Producer: Joey Moi; Label: Big Loud
–The hooky track rolls on relentlessly with a happy thump. Owen drawls the Saturday-night/Sunday-morning lyric with easy-going charm. Absolutely play this.

CB30 / “Don’t Say Goodnight”
Writers: Christian Clementi/Dallas Wilson/Trannie Anderson; Producer: Paul DiGiovanni; Label: Buena Vista/UMG
–The wafting, boyish, romantic vibe is pleasing, and their twin-like vocal harmony blend is outstanding. The duo’s billing is derived from the brothers’ first names, Christian and Brody (Clementi), plus the fact that they were both born on the 30th day of the month (May 30, 2001 and March 30, 2004, respectively).

DREW PARKER / “Raised Up Right”
Writers: Drew Parker/Matt Jenkins/Ben Hayslip; Producers: Phil O’Donnell/Scott Hendricks; Label: Warner
–Frequent Luke Combs songwriting collaborator Drew Parker has also been making waves as a record maker. His engaging, country boy tenor drawl is warm and endearing on this earthy, positive ditty. He sounds like he’d be a pleasure to have a beer with.

Kenny Chesney Adds Two New Members To Live Band

Kenny Chesney. Photo: Jill Trunnell

Kenny Chesney has added Keith Urban‘s multi-instrumentalist Danny Rader on guitar and Col. Bruce Hampton & The Aquarium Rescue Unit‘s drummer Nick Buda to his band for his upcoming “Here And Now 2022” tour.

Buda, who left the jam band world to concentrate on session work, went to Boston’s acclaimed Berklee School of Music on the recommendation of Sting’s longtime drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. Rader, a three-time ACM winner, most recently for 2017 Specialty Instrument(s) Player of the Year, plays bouzouki, mandolin, banjo and accordion as well as the electric guitar that has backed Urban live since 2010.

“When we were looking at where to go, what to do next, it was interesting to see the chemistry with different people,” Chesney explains. “So many great musicians came out, which took all of us to a new place in how we see these songs, what they’re capable of. But in the end, because this is a band, not just a group of musicians who back someone up, what Danny and Nick brought was a freshness that hits hard and lifts everything up in some pretty great ways.”

The trek kicks off April 23 at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium. For a full list of upcoming dates, click here.

Clayton Anderson’s ‘Show Me Your Fish’ Becomes Theme Song For Redcrest 2022

Jim Wilburn (Major League Fishing President and CEO) and Clayton Anderson.

Clayton Anderson’s new single, “Show Me Your Fish,” was the theme song for Major League Fishing’s Redcrest 2022 Presented by Costa – Pro Bass Fishing’s World Championship and Inaugural Expo, which ran March 25-27.

Written by Anderson, Christian Stalnecker, and Grammy winner Dave Audé, “Show Me Your Fish” was released digitally on Feb. 25. When executives at Pure Fishing, Inc. heard the song, they invited Anderson to be part of this weekend’s event. He performed on the Mossy Oak Music stage at the SageNet Center at Expo Square in Tulsa before the world’s premier bass anglers returned from Grand Lake O’ the Cherokees to crown the Redcrest 2022 Champion.

“Redcrest was beyond epic. The crowds were huge, and everyone was so genuinely nice. I can’t thank the Ugly Stik and Pure Fishing folks enough, along with the Major League Fishing organization for giving me the opportunity to be a part of it all,” Anderson shares. “I’ve said it from the day I came up with the idea for ‘Show Me Your Fish,’ the people are going to be the ones who make or break this song on social media platforms.”

Warner Chappell Music & Unknown Music Publishing Sign Sophia Scott

Sophia Scott

Warner Chappell Music and Ross Golan‘s Unknown Music Publishing have signed a global publishing deal with soulful country singer-songwriter Sophia Scott.

With a sound comprised of country, pop, rock, and R&B influences, Scott has built a following with songs such as “Side Effects,” “White Fence,” “Drink Too Much Wine,” and “She Ain’t Me,” the latter of which has amassed over 12 million streams on Spotify alone. The Nashville-based songwriter signed with EMPIRE Nashville in 2021 and has since opened for the Jonas Brothers and Kelsea Ballerini on the “Remember This” tour.

“Sophia Scott is one of the most authentic, exciting, and refreshing artists I’ve ever come across,” shares Golan. “She shares the attitudes of Loretta Lynn and Linda Ronstadt with a modern twist. It’s impossible not to love and respect her musical perspective. I couldn’t be more excited to welcome Sophia to the family.”

BJ Hill, VP of A&R at WCM Nashville, adds, “I remember the first time I saw Sophia sing her songs at a small songwriters round and how moved I was by the emotion. She has stories to tell in her music that will become a part of our lives. Her voice is pure and amazing. We are very lucky to be working with her, Unknown Music, and her awesome team.”

“I still remember the very first song I wrote. It was called ‘Cool Coffee Shop.’ Even as a second grader, I knew exactly what my life would look like and that I was destined to sing and write music (as cheesy as that may sound),” shares Scott. “After years of pouring my heart and soul into music, I can’t believe that little girl is now a published songwriter. Not only do I get to work with the best publisher in Nashville, but I also get to work with one of my biggest songwriting heroes, Ross Golan. This partnership is a dream come true for me. Thank you to BJ, Ross, Kelley [Fox], and everyone at Warner Chappell & Unknown Music for believing in me. I feel so incredibly blessed and can’t wait to begin this new journey.”

Hall Of Fame Songwriter Kent Blazy Releases New Album ‘For The Byrds’

Kent Blazy. Photo: Moments By Moser Photography

Nashville Songwriter Hall of Fame member Kent Blazy is releasing a new album, For The Byrds.

Blazy and songwriter/musician Steve Allen co-wrote all the songs on the project except the title track. The title was chosen because after hearing the Byrds song “Mr. Tambourine Man,” Blazy first decided he wanted to play guitar. The sound of Roger McGuinn‘s Rickenbacker 12-string captivated Blazy, and a picture of a Rickenbacker 12-string graces the cover of the album. Most of the project’s songs were written during the COVID-19 lockdown. Allen and Blazy both lost their wives to brain tumors, and many of the new songs are about the new loves they both found.

“This record was so much fun to create. We had one day to cut 11 songs and Lee Francis and Kevin Murphy from Jon Pardi‘s band were up for the challenge. Both did an amazing job, as did the engineer, Matt Allen, to capture everything under the pressure of that time frame,” shares Blazy.

“Kent and I have been writing together for the last couple of years and we always end up with a finished song with no agenda of style. This record has 10 songs we co-wrote during the pandemic. I think this is why the range of style goes from the ’60s garage sound of ‘Livin’ The American Dream’ to the past era ballad of ‘Twilight Time.’ We felt free to let whatever songs wanted to come out and exist just happen, yet it all flows as one long-playing album. Everybody put their heart and soul into the project and we all are proud of this album,” adds Allen.

The new music is available to order at kentblazy.com and to stream and download on all digital music platforms.

Blazy was recently inducted by his friend and co-writer Garth Brooks into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame with the class of 2020. The Kentucky native has a total of seven No. 1 hits to his credit, including “If Tomorrow Never Comes” (Brooks), “Ain’t Goin’ Down (’Til The Sun Comes Up)” (Brooks) and “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song)” (Chris Young).

For The Byrds Track List:
1. Crossing the Rubicon
2. World Starts Closing In
3. For The Byrds
4. She Believed In Me
5. All That Love
6. Summer Afternoon
7. Mr. Snake Oil
8. Wildest Dreams
9. Livin’ The American Dream
10. Blue Green Ocean Eyes
11. Twilight Time
