ERNEST Launches ‘Just Being ERNEST’ Podcast

Newcomer artist ERNEST has launched the weekly podcast Just Being ERNEST, where he will offer his opinion on current events and will host business owners, fellow artists and songwriters, while offering a platform for earnest conversations.

“I’ve always wanted to have a talk show, but I never knew exactly what that would look like,” shares ERNEST. “This podcast is a little bit of everything. I’m excited to give my take on current events, talk life and music with some of my friends in the music business, and introduce y’all to people I admire and am inspired by in different fields – local business owners, athletes, doctors, visual artists, and more. This podcast is a platform for people to have a good time expressing themselves and hopefully share a side of them they may not otherwise get to showcase. It’s truly a podcast for people who are ‘just being ERNEST’.”

The singer-songwriter released his debut project, Locals Only, in 2019 via Big Loud Records. He has co-written hits for Morgan Wallen (“More Than My Hometown”), and Diplo (“Heartless”) as well as Chris Lane (“Big, Big Plans” and “Hold You Tonight” ft. Gryffin), as well as two tracks for Sam Hunt’s album SOUTHSIDE including “Let It Down” and “Breaking Up Was Easy in the ’90s.”

BMG Opens myBMG App To All Artists And Songwriters

BMG is opening up its myBMG app to artists across the music industry to allow them to pitch for songs from BMG songwriters.

Artists can submit written briefs or even videos to BMG’s writer roster, which includes Jessie Reyez, Erika Ender, Victoria Monet, Jason Evigan, Camille Purcell and more.

The app-based version of BMG’s long-time ‘Watchlist’ service for songwriters means artists will be able to reach out directly to the BMG clients worldwide who use the myBMG app.

Erika Ender, the multi-Platinum, Latin singer-songwriter, performer and producer, who signed to BMG in February 2020, said, “I’m enjoying everything about the Watchlist. There you get to see the artists who are looking for songs, the projects, the producers, where they’re from, what they’re looking for exactly and it’s such a powerful tool for us all to do our job the best way we can.”

BMG VP, Global Writer Services Marian Wolf said, “myBMG has been a pacesetter for the industry ever since we launched it in 2013. Now as well as connecting our clients to their royalty and other key information and insights, myBMG will act as a connector between artists and songwriters helping generate new creative opportunities for both.”

BMG’s initial focus with its new Watchlist is the company’s own recording artists.

“As of today [April 29] BMG’s myBMG Watchlist includes pitch opportunities from around the world including access to priority projects from BMG artists such as Jason Aldean and Spencer Sutherland,” said Wolf. “While it is available in a desktop version, we think the app will prove most attractive to artists and songwriters, enabling writers to pitch songs to artists or vice versa at anytime and anywhere.”

The Watchlist is also open to artists from other companies and current listings include pitches from labels including Arista Records, Atlantic Records, Capitol Records, Columbia Records, RCA Records, Republic Records, Universal Music Australia, Warner Music UK, Sony Music Germany, SM Entertainment and Avex Music Japan.

The app will complement BMG’s in-house creative team supporting songwriters in today’s growing global market.

“This is not a replacement for the time-honored music publishing skill of developing songwriter careers and connecting writers and songs with artists,” said Wolf, “but it is a significant enhancement.”
Recent successful songs from placements and collaborations initiated by BMG’s global writer services team include “When God Whispered Your Name” (Keith Urban), “I Dare You” (Kelly Clarkson), “I Love Me” (Demi Lavato), “Girlfriend” (Mabel), and “Cool” (Dua Lipa).

The addition of Watchlist functionality to myBMG was previously planned for Q4 2020 but was brought forward because of the coronavirus crisis, said BMG CTO Sebastian Hentzschel.

“In the current crisis artists and writers need all the help they can get,” he said, “so as soon as this thing hit, our teams worked very hard to accelerate the integration of Watchlist functionality into myBMG.

“BMG was very early in launching an online client portal for publishing clients. It was an obvious expression of our key insight that the music business was going to have to get a whole lot more transparent and user friendly. Since then we’ve had the launch of the app back in 2017 and the addition of recordings. Others have now followed and that’s all to the good, but our view now is that myBMG should sit at the center of our day-to-day relationship with clients. That means not just royalty and copyright information, but synch updates and now Watchlist too.

“An app will never replace an artist or songwriter’s personal relationship with BMG – ultimately we’re a music company not a technology company – but myBMG is a key element in BMG’s commitment not just to fairness and transparency, but to service too.”

National Museum of African American Music Adopts Street In Downtown Nashville

The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM), in partnership with Metro Nashville Public Works, has adopted a street in downtown Nashville to deepen its connection with its home in Music City.

NMAAM will be responsible for four blocks of historic Jefferson Street in Nashville. Through the Adopt-A-Street program, the museum will host street cleanups throughout the year once social distancing mandates have been lifted.

Similar to NMAAM, Jefferson Street is rooted in the preservation of black music and history. It stretches from the historically black Tennessee State University to Fisk University, where the Fisk Jubilee Singers were founded.

Metro Nashville Public Works’ Adopt-A-Street program is a way for organizations and businesses to help keep Nashville beautiful and show pride in the surrounding community. This effort is in conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Transportation and its Nobody Trashes Tennessee campaign.

“Jefferson Street is the musical heartbeat of this city,” said H. Beecher Hicks, III, president and CEO of NMAAM. “Becoming stewards of such an important part of African American culture in Music City is humbling and is a responsibility we do not take lightly. Nashville is growing every day, and we want to show that we are here, not only to educate and entertain, but to support the community we live in.”

NMAAM is currently under construction at Nashville’s Fifth + Broadway development and expects to open in September 2020.

DISClaimer Single Reviews: Ryan Hurd, Jackson Michelson, Rachel Wammack, Tyler Braden, And More

Rachel Wammack

Willie Nelson celebrated his 87th birthday yesterday (April 29). We have two tunes this week saluting the Red Headed Stranger. We should all rejoice in his enduring greatness.

Despite the presence of some major country stars, this listening session belongs to the up-and-comers. Vying for Disc of the Day are Ryan Hurd, Jackson Michelson and our winner, Rachel Wammack.

The DISCovery Award belongs to Tyler Braden. I can’t wait to hear more from this extraordinary new voice.

NATHANIEL RATELIFF/Willie’s Birthday Song
Writers: Nathaniel Rateliff; Producers: Patrick Reese/James Barone/Rateliff; Publisher: none listed; Stax
-He had me from the opening lines: “Pass me that joint. It’s Willie’s birthday.” Usually noted as an Americana blue-eyed soulman, Rateliff turns in a straight-ahead country vocal on this sing-along ditty. I still say he’s one of the finest singers around. His great Night Sweats band is along for the ride, as are Willie stalwarts Bobbi Nelson and Mickey Raphael. Proceeds benefit Rateliff’s charity Marigold Project (in this case, FarmAid and StrongHearts Native Helpline).

EDIE BRICKELL & WILLIE NELSON/Sing To Me Willie
Writer: Edie Brickell; Producers: Edie Brickell/Kyle Crusham; Publisher: none listed; Shuffle/Thirty Tigers
– Native Texan Brickell shucks her pop duds for country trappings on this sparely-produced duet with the living legend. He provides his distinctive guitar picking as well as a well-seasoned vocal that offers Lone Star State local color. Proceeds benefit the MusicCares COVID-19 fund.

KANE BROWN/Cool Again
Writers: Kane Brown/Josh Hoge/Matthew McGinn/Lindsay Rimes; Producers: Dann Huff/Lindsay Rimes; Publisher: none listed; RCA
-Very catchy and well sung. There’s not much that’s “country” about it, but it is highly listenable. Besides, he’s on an unstoppable roll.

RACHEL WAMMACK/When I Say Amen
Writers: Rachel Wammack/Matt Maher/Sam Ellis; Producer: Sam Ellis; Publisher: none listed; RCA
– It’s a piano ballad that works as a spiritual balm for a world that has plunged into pandemic darkness. Heartfelt and very, very moving. This lady always rules.

KEITH URBAN/Polaroid
Writers: Steph Jones/Geoff Warburton/Griffen Palmer/Mark Trussell/Sam Fischer; Producers: Joey Moi/Keith Urban; Publisher: none listed; Capitol Nashville
– Bubbling memories of summers gone by. Bopping and endearing.

RYAN HURD/Every Other Memory
Writers: Ryan Hurd/Nathan Spicer/Cole Taylor; Producer: Aaron Eshuis; Publisher: UMPG; RCA
– Nostalgia with a kick-drum backbeat. It rumbles along so beautifully that you’d be a fool not to fall under its spell and roll with it. Ryan’s wife Maren Morris is on harmony vocals.

HIGH VALLEY/River’s Still Running
Writers: Brad Rempel/Randy Montana/Corey Crowder; Producers: Mike “X” O’Conner/Seth Mosley; Publisher: none listed; Warner
– Upbeat and anthemic, this engaging thumper definitely looks on the bright side. The gist of it is, “Everything’s gonna be okay.” The “gang” vocals are particularly rousing.

JACKSON MICHELSON/One Day
Writers: Jackson Michelson/Justin Ebach/Matta Alderman; Producer: Jeff Pardo; Publisher: none listed; Curb
– Charming. It’s about watching your kids grow up. His performance is loaded with sincerity, and the twirling, swirling production around him infuses the whole thing with a warm glow. Absolutely worth your attention. Listen.

WALKER HAYES/Trash My Heart
Writers: Walker Hayes/Josh Jenkins/Josh Osborne/Jimmy Robbins; Producers: Sam Sumser/Sean Small/Shane McAnally; Publisher: none listed; Monument
– Kinda hip-hoppy, lotsa rhythmic. There are so many novelty audio touches in the arrangement and production that you can almost forget the absence of melody. Even without one, he manages to be highly personable throughout.

TYLER BRADEN/Brother
Writers: William Rinehart/Nathaniel Rinehart/Gavin DeGraw; Producer: Randy Montana; Publishers: Bear Lee Breathing Music (BMI), NeedToBreathe Music (BMI), G DeGraw Music Inc. (BMI), All rights administered by Downtown DMP Songs (BMI); Warner
– This stirring tune comes from the rock band NEEDTOBREATHE. Newcomer Braden has a commanding delivery, with power and grit to spare. Hang on when he swings into the choruses with wailing, chesty oomph. I dig this guy.

Radio Cares Radiothon Raising Funds For Feeding America

Cumulus and Westwood One are helping those in need today by leading the Radio Cares: Feeding America Emergency Radiothon. NEEDTOBREATHE Announces New Project For 2020

NEEDTOBREATHE is releasing their seventh studio album Out of Body later this year on Elektra Records/Centricity Music.Out of Body follows NEEDTOBREATHE’s 2016’s H A R D L O V E, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Current Album Sales Chart, and featured the Gold-certified title track “Hard Love.” The new album marks the beginning of the next chapter for NEEDTOBREATHE, as prior to entering the studio last year, longtime member Bo Rinehart departed the group.

Two new songs from the upcoming album, “Hang On” and “Seasons” are available to stream and download beginning today. “Hang On” inspires with a timely message that doubles as a clarion call for a world in need of a little hope.

“Sometimes it’s nice to look back and reminisce on some of the best parts of growing up: when you were a kid and there were no limits in the world, when you first fell in love, or when you first left your small town for something new,” the band shared. “It’s good to look back to those moments and grab hold of that energy. ‘Hang On’ is about taking the magic of going through life for the first time and believing it can happen again. I think it’s a refreshing way to view the world in these tough times.”

The Recording Academy has added its first Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, naming Valeisha Butterfield Jones to the role, effective May 11. Butterfield Jones will report to Academy Chair and Interim President/CEO Harvey Mason Jr.

“We are thrilled to welcome Valeisha Butterfield Jones into the Recording Academy family,” said Harvey Mason Jr. “Valeisha has been a force in driving systemic change and enhancing equal opportunities for underrepresented groups across entertainment, technology and politics. I’m excited to work with her to continue evolving the Recording Academy as an organization that represents our music community and a place where all voices are welcomed, supported and nurtured. We are so fortunate to have Valeisha’s leadership in this crucial area.”

“The Recording Academy has an opportunity and responsibility to ensure that diversity and inclusion is embedded in its core values. I’m deeply honored to join the Academy as we enter a new chapter of transformational growth, leadership and change,” said Butterfield Jones. “During this unprecedented time in world history, together we will double-down on our focus to drive systemic change and equitable outcomes for underrepresented communities and creators.”
