Warner Music Artist Services Promotes Andrew Peterson

Andrew Peterson

Warner Music Artist Services (WMAS), the in-house merchandising, e-commerce, and digital marketing division of Warner Music Group, has promoted Andrew Peterson to Vice President, Tour & Artist Services. With nearly 20 years of merchandising/touring experience, Peterson has toured with several platinum and Grammy-winning artists including Shinedown, Kid Rock, and Panic! At The Disco.

In this role, Peterson will lead Warner Music Artist Services’ Live efforts and serve as the head of WMAS’ Nashville operation, where he is based. Peterson and his team will be responsible for optimizing artist merchandise sales on the road and maximizing bespoke fan VIP experiences. He will continue to report to Dan Goldberg, Senior Vice President, WMAS.

“We’ve been lucky to have Andrew build our Live department since its inception nearly 10 years ago,” said Goldberg. “He truly understands the intricacies of touring and the ins-and-outs of merchandising—and it’s been a pleasure to watch him evolve into the leader that he is today.”

“I’ve always had a passion for live music and creating truly unforgettable and unique experiences,” added Peterson. “I’m grateful to Dan, Matt Young and the entire WMAS team for their support and I look forward to continuing to serve our artists and fans around the world.”

Peterson joined Warner Music Artist Services in 2009 following time at Merchandise Management.

BREAKING: Becky Gardenhire Promoted To Co-Head At WME’s Nashville Office

Becky Gardenhire

Becky Gardenhire has been promoted to Co-Head at WME’s Nashville office. She will work alongside current Co-Heads Scott Clayton, Joey Lee and Jay Williams to oversee WME’s day-to-day operations in Nashville.

“I’m diving even deeper into the day-to-day operations of our office, but also thinking bigger along the lines of what can we be doing to improve what we can do for our clients and colleagues,” Gardenhire tells MusicRow Magazine of her new role.

This promotion makes Gardenhire the highest-ranking female executive at an agency in Nashville.

“I’m super excited that I am in this position. I think it’s really important…we need more women in positions that can make decisions,” she tells MusicRow. “I think it’s so important to have a diverse room and diverse perspectives, whether it’s Cindy Mabe at Universal, or Ali Harnell or Sally Williams at Live Nation, it’s so important for more women to be part of leadership teams. But I also have a lot of great male champions and mentors, I wouldn’t be here without them. I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

“Becky has demonstrated time and again her commitment to her colleagues, clients, and the Nashville community,” Clayton, Lee and Williams said in a joint statement. “Becky embodies the spirit of WME’s Nashville office, and we look forward to the perspective and insight she will bring to this role.”

Gardenhire began her career in the Beverly Hills office of the William Morris Agency in 2002, and relocated to Nashville in 2003. Gardenhire was named partner in 2017.

In addition to her leadership role, Gardenhire also oversees touring, television, literary and sponsorship opportunities for artists including Jake Owen, Jordan Davis, LANCO, Rascal Flatts, Reba McEntire, Tenille Townes, Ingrid Andress, Sara Evans and Trisha Yearwood.

Gardenhire has also spearheaded social impact initiatives for WME and the Nashville music community, such as Talk the Talk, a long-running monthly lecture series that connects women across the Nashville music business.

Last year, Gardenhire was named as one of MusicRow’s Rising Women on the Row honorees, and earned the CMA’s Talent Agent of the Year Award. Gardenhire currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Academy of Country Music, the Board of Directors for TJ Martell’s Nashville chapter and the Board of Directors for the W.O. Smith Music School.

Over the past year, WME’s Nashville office has booked over 14,000 shows, and expanded its offerings to clients through providing resources for film, television, literary, digital and endorsements.

Cold River Records To Close

After nearly 15 years, Cold River Records is set to close. Cold River Records launched in 2006, and added an in-house radio promotion team in 2010, and launched a publishing division in 2016. Among the artists Cold River Records has represented over the years are Drew Baldridge, Dylan Schneider, Uncle Si and the Sicotics, Maggie Baugh, and Katie Armiger.

“It is with bitter-sweet emotions that I must announce a winding down of Cold River Records over the next few months,” said Cold River Records president Pete O’Heeron. “We began this journey almost 15 years ago and have enjoyed every moment of music creation by our artists. To the amazing employees who have called our label home, I thank you for being such dedicated champions for our artists and making personal sacrifices to support their careers.  As some of my dearest friends, I will miss you the most and cherish all of our memories on the road and the phone calls with your travel stories. To the programmers at radio, producers, songwriters and the music industry leaders who became our friends, I thank you for your counsel, guidance and friendship. To our artists who have performed on the Grand Ole Opry, opened for some of the biggest names in country music, toured the world and even recorded at famed Abby Road studios in London, thank you for creating amazing music that I will never forget.

As many of you know, I have a biologics company where we are seeing almost daily breakthroughs in cell therapy. As passionate as I am about music, I am equally passionate about medicine.  We are developing cures for Degenerative Disc Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s and CTE (NFL head injuries).  These disease pathways will require ever more increasing attention and time requirements from me. In stepping away from Cold River, I’ll be focusing on our efforts to address these chronic and deadly conditions.”

John Ettinger, Sr. VP, Promotion, commented, “It has been a terrific two years at Cold River, and an honor to work with everyone at the company. Pete O’Heeron is one of the most unique, magnanimous and energetic people I’ve had the chance to partner with in Nashville. Together we created Innovation Music and the Innovation Music Awards, the Tee Roy Williams media executive event, along with a host of initiatives that ideally changed how many view what is a record label. My goal is to imagine and execute a future that looks a lot like our great work together.”

ASCAP celebrated its most-performed songs on Christian radio on Monday evening (Sept. 16), during the 41st annual ASCAP Christian Music Awards, which returned again this year to the Franklin Theatre in downtown Franklin, Tennessee.

The show opened with praise and worship group Miel San Marcos offering a rendition of “Danzo En El Rio.”

Matthew West presented David Garcia with the Christian Music Songwriter of the Year honor. Garcia’s most-performed songs include TobyMac’s “Everything,” John Reuben’s “Grace Got You,” and Francesca Battistelli’s “The Breakup Song.” Garcia is also nominated for several Dove Awards on Oct. 15.

The ASCAP Christian Music Song of the Year was “Reckless Love,” penned by Cory Asbury and Caleb Culver. Asbury is also the artist on the song, which was published by Bethel Music Publishing and Watershed Worship Publishing. Asbury treated the industry audience to an acoustic rendition of the track.

ASCAP was represented by President Paul Williams, CEO Elizabeth Matthews, John Titta, Mike Sistad, Beth Brinker and Holly Chester.

Russ and Tori Taff were honored with the Golden Note Award, which honors songwriters, composers and artists who have earned extraordinary career milestones. Russ was inducted in the Gospel Music Association’s Hall of Fame three times, as a singer in the Imperials, for his solo career, and as part of the Gaither Vocal Band.

Amy Grant shared several memories from her early tours with the Taffs, and the couple were honored with performances of “I Cry” from Joseph Habedank, “We Will Stand” (Chuck Cannon), and an electrifying performance of “Table in the Wilderness,” led by Darrell Brown with Cedric Sesley and the choir Out for Souls.

Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan Share The Love For ETC at Tribute Concert

Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, and other artists who were fans of Earl Thomas Conley gathered at the CMA Theatre at the Country Music Hall of Fame last Tuesday (Sept. 10) to pay tribute to the man Shelton called “my superhero.”

Before a near capacity crowd, the group of entertainers, which also included John Anderson, Wade Hayes, Joe Diffie, Walt Aldridge, Neal McCoy, Dale Ann Bradley, Errin Scates and The Earl Thomas Conley Band talked about Conley’s influence on them and performed his songs, agreeing that many of them appear deceptively easy to sing. Bryan, who sang “Once In A Blue Moon,” remarked during rehearsals that he was probably going to have to switch to falsetto on some of the high notes, quipping, “You just don’t know the range in these songs until you try to sing them.”

Many artists shared fond memories of Conley. Neal McCoy traveled with Conley when the two opened for Charley Pride, and Wade Hayes recalled his first purchase of a Conley tune was “Fire and Smoke.” Before Hayes got into the business himself, he recalled meeting the singer at a celebrity golf tournament. “He was so kind but a little shy, and that always stuck with me.”

Aldean also met Conley early in his career and was invited to go on his bus. “He said he liked my music, and I had only had a couple songs out at that time. I was struck by his kindness.”

Bill Cody and Devon O’Day from WSM-AM 650 co-hosted the tribute, adding their favorite stories of Conley. “I remember one day I was interviewing Earl and I asked him who his heroes were,” Cody said. “He said Merle Haggard, Lefty Frizzell, Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams, and I looked at him and said, ‘Didn’t you want to be anybody well behaved?” Earl just looked at me and said, ‘Apparently not’.”

Also featured in the tribute were videos sent by artists who couldn’t take part in the memorial from Marty Raybon of Shenandoah, Little Big Town, Trace Adkins, Brad Paisley, Steve Wariner, the Oak Ridge Boys, Jake Owens, Toby Keith and Vince Gill.

The Essential Earl Thomas Conley was recently released by Sony Legacy. It is available only on digital and includes a brand-new song by Earl, “Love’s The Only Voice.”

Mechanical Licensing Collective Submits Proposal To Copyright Royalty Board

The Mechanical Licensing Collective has submitted its proposal to the Copyright Royalty Board outlining the structure of the collective, as well as the funding required to carry out the statutory demands of the Music Modernization Act. The law mandates that the funding be wholly paid by the digital services.

According to a statement from the MLC, the proposed start-up assessment is $37.25 million, with an annual assessment starting at $29 million before its start date in 2021.

By Jan. 1, 2021, the MLC must be able to administer the new nationwide blanket license system for mechanical rights, operate an unprecedented, transparent database, match copyright ownership to usage on streaming platforms, and pay songwriters and publishers quickly and accurately.

The MLC’s submission to the CRB also outlines many of the MLC’s funding and staffing plans, including details of the MLC’s proposed organization and operations. The CRB rules provide for a written response by the digital services, a written reply by the MLC, and then a hearing with live testimony, which is currently scheduled for February 2020. The CRB ruling will be due by July 2020.

The commission-free collective will be funded by the digital services, who will be able to receive blanket licenses through the MLC. The funding will be made through an “administrative assessment” on the digital services, which the judges at the Copyright Royalty Board are tasked with setting in an amount sufficient to cover the MLC’s total costs.

The MLC released the following statement: “The CRB submission is the result of months of research on the most efficient and effective way to run this unprecedented new collective that will serve the needs of both the songwriters and their music publishers as well as the digital music services from Day One. The proposed start-up assessment is $37.25 million, with an annual assessment starting at $29 million in 2021, when the MLC commences its blanket licensing operations. The proposed assessment is the right one under the law, and the budget is very reasonable for digital companies to pay to receive the benefits the blanket license will provide them. The MLC’s operating budget and staff must be capable of comprehensively meeting and executing the extensive requirements and responsibilities of the Collective under the law in less than 15 months from now.”

MLC Board Chairman Alisa Coleman added, “We have a mandate to not just administer the mechanical licensing process, but to improve it, make it more transparent, and to better serve songwriters and publishers of all sizes and around the world. We have outlined for the Judges what is necessary to achieve these goals and significantly advance the industry, and to fulfill Congress’ mandate to end the status quo where undisclosed millions of dollars owed to music creators are not paid. We are going to continue to work tirelessly in these CRB proceedings to ensure the tech giants who joined with us to pass the MMA continue that partnership to fully fund the most important piece of the legislation, the entity that will actually implement the requirements of the legislation.”
