George Richey Passes
MusicRow has confirmed George Richey, longtime husband of Tammy Wynette, passed away recently. According to Woodlawn Memorial Park, Richey has been laid to rest near Wynette in the Woodlawn Cross Mausoleum.
Richey and Wynette wed in 1978; it was her fifth and longest marriage. Songwriter/producer Richey had been in her life for many years as a businessman and musician before they married. Throughout much of the 1980s he acted as her manager and they were married until Wynette’s death in 1998.
In 2001 Richey married Sheila Slaughter. MusicRow was unable to reach Slaughter-Richey for comment.
Richey’s Facebook page status, updated last night (8/15), says the following:
Hope you have been enjoying reminiscing with me over the past two weeks. I know it’s not been the same as having current updates but I still have found it to be a blessing and such a graceful time to honor a great man and his family. …When the Richey’s are ready to make their private business public – you will understand more! Our deepest sympathies to the George Richey family.
Heartfelt and deepest sympathies to the family and friends of George Richey. He may now rest in well deserved peace.
I am deeply saddened by the passing of George Richey. A couple of years ago, I was privileged to spend a weekend with George and Sheila and several of Tammy Wynette’s biggest fans. George’s main concern that weekend was for all of us in the group to know the Lord so that we could be reunited in Heaven with Tammy. He was a great encourager in my life and I will miss him. All my love and prayers go to Sheila and Tatum.

RIP, Richey! 1935 ~ 2010
We were saddened by the recent news release of George’s passing. He not only inspired us with his talent and song writing but by being a true inspiration in his final months and days. Toward the end he shared much of his personal pain and struggles with the world. Because of this, hundreds, if not thousands, will be saved from the very disease that silenced him.
Our thoughts and prayers to his wife and daughter, his friends and extended family and to his fans. May you finally rest now George and breathe easy knowing that you indeed have made a difference in the lives of so many.
Mr and Mrs Rod Freeman
