DIY ‘U’ Showcases Digital Artist Career Tool

The third installment of ASCAP’s DIY “U” took place in the performing rights organization’s conference room Aug. 16. The DIY series is designed to introduce members to various technology companies and this edition featured the Topspin direct-to-fan platform and Topspin Sr. Director of Artist Services Nashville, Wayne Leeloy.

Topspin has many layers of tools and ways to obtain and analyze data. Looked at simply, it is the next step for an artist who has already begun to engage fans on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, but wants to gather more individual information about those fans, for example an email address. It is one thing to have a Friend, Follower or Like, but another level of trust entirely when a fan feels secure enough to give you his or her email address which then allows you to contact them when you want to do so.

According to Leeloy, who began his Nashville career working for Ticketmaster, Topspin was a closed platform until last March but has rapidly expanded to over 12,000 members. “It can be harnessed for music, books, film and more,” said Leeloy. “Anything where the goal is to build community around a brand. It’s a platform for creating and managing a retail channel including an artist store, plus a sophisticated toolset to help acquire new fans and analyze data.” Artists currently using Topspin range from Paul McCartney to Nashville’s Jim Lauderdale.

(L-R): ASCAP's Mike Sistad, Jesse Willoughby, Topspin's Wayne Leeloy and ASCAP's LeAnn Phelan.

Some of the kinds of available tools include a series of flexible widgets that allow artists to offer free content, fan club memberships, tickets or contests in exchange for email acquisition. The widgets retain full functionality when shared on social networks and third party websites. So, for example, a widget can be shared in someone’s Facebook stream and others can discover and interact with its functionality. A second key feature of the platform is its robust data dashboard where the fan list is kept and analyzed. Artists are able to filter the list and sort by zip code and distance parameters. Emails are ranked in terms of influence, engagement and other interests. The list can also be downloaded for use with email programs such as Mailchimp, for example.

One ASCAP member noted that while the platform seemed “amazing,” the learning curve for best leveraging its power can be challenging. “Think Pro Tools, and what that did for recording,” said Leeloy. “It takes some time to master, but it’s worth it.” The Topspin website has a series of educational features and videos to help artists move through the process. Also Berklee College of Music’s online school has a 12-week course given four times a year designed to provide “deep insight into the strategies, skills and tools required to market your business online as well as the tactical training you need to become a Topspin pro.”

Sharing, awareness, viral engagement and data acquisition systems like the Topspin platform aren’t just terms or concepts for tomorrow’s music industry, serious careers are already immersed in them.

Letter From Sugarland

Sugarland has just released this statement regarding the tragedy that occurred Saturday before the duo took the stage at the Indiana State Fair.

Dear Fans, Family and Friends,
We have taken a couple of days to try and even begin to emotionally process the magnitude and gravity of the tragedy in Indiana on Saturday. While the path to healing from this type of trauma and loss is long and winding, we wanted to reach out and update you on where we are and how we are.
We are in the process of planning a private memorial in Indiana, to honor those fans who died. We would first like to hold space so that their families can have time to go through their own services and memorials. Until that time we are holding vigil for them. We join them on their mourning benches. And we stand in the gap asking God to offer them peace and healing. For those suffering from injury we hold you up with prayers for complete healing of your own.
We are also addressing our own specific healing. Our road family experienced its traumas together. While we all scattered to our given families for their comfort, the trauma we experienced together binds us in a unique way that we share only with each other and those who were there. There is healing in our being together. There is healing in our working together. For this reason we are planning to get back on the road this weekend, beginning with our scheduled show in Albuquerque this Thursday, August 18th.  The emotions have us yearning to be close to each other immediately. The logistics have us needing to replace all of our instruments and equipment. (The set is a loss that is insignificant in light of the tragedy).
This Incredible Machine is more than a tour and more than a set. We have always celebrated music as a Healer. While music cannot change the events and losses at the Indiana State Fair, it can hopefully serve as a ritual and a balm to provide comfort and facilitate healing in this time of great sorrow. We hope to see you all soon.
Love,
Sugarland

The statement is also available on the band’s official website, www.sugarlandmusic.com.

Chesney Reigns As King of the Road

Chesney fans pack the New Meadowlands Stadium Saturday night.

Kenny Chesney is the country king of the road. For several years he’s been one of the biggest touring forces in all genres, and he continues to set records, such as Saturday night’s (8/13) concert which was the biggest ticketed country show in New York/New Jersey history. The monstrous event at New Jersey’s New Meadowlands Stadium featuring Chesney, Zac Brown Band, Billy Currington and Uncle Kracker sold over 55,000 tickets.
It was one of a dozen stadium dates on the 2011 Corona Presents Kenny Chesney’s Goin’ Coastal Tour. And he’s not the only country act filling stadiums this summer.
Chesney’s huge catalog of hits has contributed to his major draw. Combine that with top-name special guests and a party atmosphere, and its the reason his outing ranked as Pollstar’s highest-grossing country tour of 2011 so far.
While in the New York area, Chesney discussed his business enterprise with the New York Times in an article called “Country Singer, Songwriter and C.E.O.” In the interview he talks about the intricacies of being a boss and friend, keeping his team motivated with merch lotteries to win the night’s proceeds (sometimes up to $300,000), and the life lessons learned from his high school football coach.
Always the sports fan, Chesney brought New York Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher and New York Jets coach Rex Ryan onstage for Saturday night’s final moments. He had practiced with the Jets earlier in the week.

Networks In Bidding War For CMA Awards

ABC has been the network home of the CMA Awards since 2006, but rumors of a channel change are swirling around Music Row. A report on entertainment industry site Vulture points to major networks circling the CMA for rights to its awards show.
According to Vulture, NBC, CBS, and ABC are all offering big bucks to score the coveted broadcast rights to Country Music’s Biggest Night.
The news has also been picked up by the LA Times.
CBS is home to the ACM Awards show, and Fox hosts the new ACA Awards, so logic points to the Peacock vying hardest for rights to the CMAs.
This year’s CMA Awards show is set for Nov. 9 on ABC.
One look at last year’s ratings show why the trophyfest is such a hot commodity. In 2010 it was the No. 1 entertainment program on television for the whole week of its broadcast, drawing an estimated 33.8 million viewers to become the second largest audience since 2005.

Vince Gill Celebrates Opry 20th Anniversary [video tribute]

Vince Gill was surrounded by family, loved ones and fellow artists as he celebrated his 20th anniversary as a member of the Grand Ole Opry Saturday night (8/13). Among those joining Gill on stage throughout the show were wife Amy Grant, daughter Jenny Gill, Jimmy Dickens, Emmylou Harris, Martina McBride, and The Time Jumpers.
The Country Music Hall of Fame member opened the show before a sold-out crowd by performing “Gotta’ Travel On” in honor of Opry member Billy Grammer, who passed away this week. Gill played the 1959 hit on a Grammer Guitar he’d purchased just weeks ago.
He teamed with Harris on her hits “Two More Bottles of Wine” and “If I Needed You.” He joined McBride for her take on his first No. 1 single, “Take Your Memory With You,” and accompanied Grant on her song “True Love.” Jenny saluted her dad with a performance of his hit “If You Ever Have Forever In Mind.”
Gill spoke candidly with the audience, sharing that more than 20 years earlier he hadn’t been able to accept the Opry’s very first invitation to play the show because it conflicted with accompanying Jenny at her grade school talent show. “The friendships I’ve built here mean more to me than every song I’ve ever sung out here on this stage,” added Gill. “I wouldn’t know how to do [music] without this place.” Fittingly, he closed the evening by coming full-circle, with a performance of the first song he ever sang on the Opry, “When I Call Your Name.”
During the show the fans were treated to the following video salute.

Sugarland Forced To Cancel Date Following State Fair Tragedy

Sugarland is dealing with the tragedy that occurred at the Indiana State Fair Saturday night (8/13). Just before the duo was scheduled to perform, high winds caused the stage to collapse, killing five people. [See previous report below].
The band, who is touring with opener Sara Bareilles, was forced to cancel its show the following night (8/14) at the Iowa State Fair. According to the Iowa Festival: “Aside from coping with the magnitude of the accident, the ongoing investigation prevents the band from getting what may remain of their stage equipment.”
In the wake of the disaster, Jennifer Nettles posted this statement on the band’s official website:

I am so moved. Moved by the grief of those families who lost loved ones. Moved by the pain of those who were injured and the fear of their families. Moved by the great heroism as I watched so many brave Indianapolis fans actually run toward the stage to try and help lift and rescue those injured. Moved by the quickness and organization of the emergency workers who set up the triage and tended to the injured. There are no words to process a moment of this magnitude and gravity. There are only prayers for peace in the hearts of the bereft, and prayers of thanksgiving for those who were spared or safe. A piece of our heart is left in that grandstand. May God provide peace and healing to the people of Indianapolis.
We wish to pass along our most sincere thanks for the messages of love, prayer, and support from our fan family. We’ll post any further updates here as they become available.

The stage collapsed during heavy rain and high winds before the start of the concert. The winds were estimated at between 60 and 70 mph.
“We are all right. We are praying for our fans, and the people of Indianapolis. We hope you’ll join us. They need your strength,” was Tweeted on Sugarland’s Twitter account after the accident. According to Sugarland reps, the band and its crew are safe.
A memorial service was scheduled for today (8/15) for those who died during the tragedy. The state fair was to re-open following the service.

Sound Of Change Headed To Music City

Put your ear to the music industry railroad tracks and you’ll likely hear a faint rumbling headed toward Nashville—don’t recognize it? It’s the sound of change.
Warner Music’s recent purchase by Len Blavatnik’s Access Industries seemingly brought little or no change to Music City, but the upcoming sale of EMI—both publishing and records— is likely to generate a substantial restructuring along Music City streets during 2012.
Deal Points
According to the Financial Times (8/2) expectations are that EMI, a British company, will fetch between $3-$4 billion, possibly higher than the $3.3 billion that Warners recently commanded. Key to the bidding is the disposition of EMI’s publishing and record music divisions. Do they go as a unit? Or do they get split up? Reports are that bids have been received under both scenarios and bidders include Sony, Universal, Warner Music and BMG’s publishing venture.
Sony and BMG are likely focused on EMI’s substantial publishing assets. Warner Music could reap cost benefits by adding the EMI label asset and funneling it through Warner distribution, thereby eliminating the EMI distribution and hundreds of millions of dollars in overhead. According to the Financial Times, market leaders Universal and Sony would face tough regulatory winds were they to attempt to acquire the EMI record label.
More recent updates, (8/11) note that the global financial crisis is making credit harder to obtain which could ultimately lower EMI’s final take. “It’s likely that the weakness in the financial markets could have an impact on the price,” Singer Capital Markets media analyst Jonathan Barrett told the Financial Times. “If EMI was a small business, there wouldn’t be an issue here, but it isn’t and so it will affect what people are willing to pay. Buyers may just decide to walk away—or, if they do bid, there’s a good chance that there will be some very conservative bids. If this happens there’s a real chance that Citi will put the transaction on ice. The same thing has already happened in a number of other sectors.”
Nashville Skyline
Recent speculation in HitsDailyDouble.com posits, “All three majors believe they can absorb recorded music. As for publishing, the sheer size of UMG’s pubco precludes the company from making a deal for EMI Music Publishing, with its 1.3 million-song catalog, while Sony Corp.-owned Sony/ATV appears to be in a good position to add EMI’s publishing assets… However, HDD also notes, “Vegas lists Warner as the 8-5 favorite to come out on top.” Viewed from a macro perspective, it seems highly likely that when the unpredictable  sales dust settles, Nashville will be left with one less major label and one less major publisher.
Regardless of which company chairs remain when the music stops playing, this round of musical chairs will effect artists, label heads, staffers, publishers and songwriters. And one can’t help but wonder what domino effects might ensue as sale-created “free agents” get absorbed back into the music economy.
So yes, it’s too to early handicap all the possible scenarios, but bet on change, that’s a sure thing.

Brantley Gilbert Sets Release Date

Brantley Gilbert is slated to release Halfway to Heaven Deluxe, his first project from The Valory Music Co., on Sept. 13. Lead single “Country Must Be Country Wide” is quickly making its way up the charts and currently sits at No. 12 on MusicRow’s CountryBreakout Chart.
Gilbert has already achieved success with two No. 1 hits as a songwriter, having penned the Jason Aldean hits “My Kinda Party” and “Dirt Road Anthem,” which appear on Aldean’s Platinum album My Kinda Party.
As we tour country wide, I continue to realize that my fans in the crowd are just like me,” says Gilbert. “They are my closest friends because they listen to my music, they sing along with me and they have been through the same type of experiences. This album is essentially a storybook of my life and I am excited to see what those friends have to say about it.”
The album’s original 12 tracks have been remixed and remastered for the Deluxe version, including three newly recorded songs produced Dan Huff and three videos. Big Machine Label Group Pres./CEO Scott Borchetta says, “Time has come! The demand for this album is off the hook. His live shows are an experience, his songs anthems, his personality contagious.
