RIAA Mid-Year Report Shows Streaming Growth

music industry 2014 revenues mid year

Click to download full report.

The RIAA today (Sept. 25) released its mid-year 2014 shipment and revenue numbers.
For the first half of 2014, overall revenues were down 2.5%, to $2.2 billion at wholesale value on a year-over-year basis. At retail, the decrease in value was 4.9% to $3.2 billion.
Strong growth in revenues from streaming services offset declines in digital downloads. Streaming music services grew 28% in the first half of 2014 to $859 million, versus $673 million for 1H 2013. This category includes revenues from subscription services (such as Rhapsody and paid versions of Spotify, among others), streaming radio service revenues that are distributed by SoundExchange (like Pandora, SiriusXM, and other Internet radio), and other non-subscription on-demand streaming services (such as YouTube, Vevo, and ad-supported Spotify).
These streaming services contributed 27% of total industry revenues in 1H 2014, compared with 20% for 1H 2013.
Paid subscriptions grew to $371 million, up 23% y-o-y on a value basis, but grew at an even more rapid pace of 43% by number of subscriptions. This difference is partially due to an update in RIAA’s retail price markup estimate.
On-demand ad-supported streaming services grew 57% y-o-y to $165 million for the first half of 2014.
The total value of digitally distributed formats was $2.2 billion, virtually flat compared to the 1H of 2013.
Revenues from permanent digital downloads (including albums, single tracks, videos, and kiosk sales) declined 12% to $1.3 billion for the first half of 2014.
Total sales in physical formats were $898 million, down 14% versus 1H 2013.

DISClaimer: Dierks Bentley and a String of Newcomers

Dierks Bentley Say You Do

Dierks Bentley

I always like it when there are plenty of newcomers in the week’s stack of platters.
It gives me comfort to know that country remains the music of choice for so many wanna-be’s. Today, we have a female, a duo and two bands in the running for the DisCovery Award. The groups are The Railers and The Washers. The lady is Abbi Walker. The winning act is the duo, Two Way Crossing. There’s just something so fresh and innocent and endearing in their approach. Welcome to the party.
Reliable hit maker Dierks Bentley can rock with the best of them. But today he is gently persuasive with the intimacy of “Say You Do.” It earns him a Disc of the Day salute.
ABBI WALKER/Southern Soul
Writers: none listed; Producer: none listed; Publishers: none listed; AW
-This sassy country-rocker stomps along with swagger, confidence and attitude. Dig that deep bass thudding. Very promising.
DIERKS BENTLEY/Say You Do
Writers: Matt Ramsey/Shane McAnally/Trevor Rosen; Producer: Ross Copperman; Publishers: Sonic Geo/Calhoun Enterprises/Music of RPM/HoriPro/Universal/Smack Ink/ReHits/Smacktown/Smack Blue, ASCAP; Capitol (track)
-Go ahead and lie to him. Go ahead and wreck his bed. How could any gal resist an invitation wrapped up in such a sensuous sound? Beautifully produced and sung.
THE WASHERS/Pennies
Writer: Todd Jank; Producer: Adam Odor; Publishers: none listed; Washers
-The lead singer lacks charisma, but the band plays well and the song is a winner.
TAYLOR SWIFT/Shake It Off
Writers: none listed; Producer: none listed; Publishers: none listed; Big Machine (ERG)
-It’s extremely catchy and delightfully bopping. The gently honking sax and the white-girl rapping in the middle are the biggest changes of pace from her “country” sound.
Two Way Crossing

Two Way Crossing

SI KAHN/Mountain Polley
Writers: Si Kahn; Producer: none listed; Publishers: Joe Hill, ASCAP; SK
-The tailings dam break at the Mount Polley copper mine in British Columbia last month caused the largest toxic waste spill in Canadian history. Veteran North Carolina folk singer Si Kahn revives the age-old country tradition of topical songs by releasing this environmental-poisoning tale laced with lively guitar, mandolin and banjo picking. Hearty sounding.
JO DEE MESSINA/Not Dead Yet
Writers: Jo Dee Messina/Alyssa Bonagura; Producers: Jo Dee Messina/Julian King; Publishers: Dreambound/Almo/Alright Love!/My Plum, ASCAP; Dreambound
-Jo Dee Messina’s Kickstarter-funded CD titled Me contains some of the finest music of her career to date. This defiant, wailing lead-off track of the collection is its new single. Women and underdogs everywhere can pump their fists in celebration. Love it.
ERICA NICOLE/It’s Comin’ Down
Writers: Katrina Ruth Hasanoglu/Jeremy Stover; Producer: Kent Wells; Publishers: EMI April/Songs of Countrywood; ASCAP; EN
-This kiss off tune promises to hit him like a wrecking ball and really hammer him down. The track rocks, and so does she.
BARBRA STREISAND & BLAKE SHELTON/I’d Want It To Be You
Writers: Steve Dorff/Bobby Tomberlin/Jay Landers; Producers: Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds & Walter Afanasieff; Publishers: Dorffmeister/Curb/Halaron/Wixen, BMI/ASCAP; Columbia (track)
-Steisand’s new Partners CD is a collection of male duets. The diva chose Blake as the country representative on it. Her pop soprano circles, flutters and harmonizes with his sturdy drawling delivery surprisingly well. It helps that the ballad is flawlessly written. Well worth your attention.
TWO WAY CROSSING/Deep End
Writers: none listed; Producer: Steve Pasch; Publishers: none listed; TWC (track)
-Two Way Crossing is a male-female duo comprised of Jenny & Blake Marvin. This rhythm-happy single from its seven-song EP is a sprightly romance ditty with a built-in smile. Bright and joyous.
THE RAILERS/Kinda Dig the Feeling
Writers: Tom Douglas/Jaren Johnston/Tyler Bryant; Producer: Justin Niebank; Publishers: Sony-ATV/Texa Rae/Tomdouglasmusic/Tyler Bryant, no performance rights listed; Warner Bros.
-It’s a rapid-fire, almost nervous sounding toe-tapper about being completely dizzy in love. Prepare yourself for a highly energized, hyper listening experience.

Second Annual Music City Food + Wine Festival Maintains Momentum

Grand-Taste-Events

Entry into the Grand Taste Events.

The world-class Music City Food + Wine Festival took place over the weekend (September 20-21) in Nashville, featuring premier food and musical talent from the Southern region and beyond.
Among Saturday’s events was Trisha Yearwood sharing the secret to her Skillet Apple Pie. “This is the second year for food and music to intertwine in Nashville,” she said during the cooking demonstration. “It makes so much sense for those two elements to combine here. For me, it’s incredibly perfect.”

Trisha Yearwood visits with fans before heading back to Atlanta, GA.

After performing two shows on her 50th birthday the night prior, Yearwood arrived in Nashville at 2:00 a.m. with her sister Beth, who joined her onstage for the morning demonstration. “I usually stay to sign books, but I’m getting on a plane to fly back to Atlanta right after this,” said Yearwood, whose career is handled by Ken Levitan’s Vector Management, the company behind the festival. While on a world tour with husband Garth Brooks, Yearwood is prepping a cookware and cutlery line, a new cookbook expected in 2015, and a new album from RCA Nashville, currently available for pre-order. The fifth season of her Food Network cooking show is airing episodes recorded in Oklahoma. “Garth and I just moved back to Nashville,” she said. “Going forward, I’ll be on the road so I don’t know how the [taping] schedule will look.”
The afternoon’s Grand Taste events continued at Public Square Park, including selections from a who’s-who list of fine local restaurants, including mozzarella and peppers from City House, skirt steak from Lockeland Table, bourbon butterscotch pudding from Buttermilk Road/Husk Nashville, pulled pork on a black eyed pea cake from Watermark, pâté from Porter Road Butcher, and a lemon chiffon in caramel cake from the International Culinary School of the Arts. Specialty drinks from Deep Eddy, Dixie, and Titos, were irresistible. World-class vintners were featured alongside those from Nashville’s back yard (Arrington Vineyard), as well as from Paso Robles, CA (Liberty School Wine), and Winebow selections from Chile, Spain, and Italy, and many more.
Vendors welcoming the larger, second-annual crowd included Alabama-based Billy Reid, Nashville-based leather designer Peter Nappi, and Nissan’s Infiniti, whose US headquarters is located in Franklin, Tenn.
Evening events took attendees to Walk of Fame Park for celebrity chef preparations and an outdoor concert. Harvest Night dinner highlights included Ashley Christensen’s pimento grits and succotash, and Amanda Freitag’s falafel cone with green goddess, alongside dishes by Jonathan Waxman, Masaharu Morimoto and Tyler Florence. Rubbing shoulders with the crowd were many of the evenings performers, including hosts Kings of Leon, and celeb guests including Nashville’s Connie Britton.
Finale-Chorus

The Kings opened the concert with “Dixieland Delight,” kicking off a variety of cover song performances representative of Music City. Jamey Johnson sang “Set ‘Em Up Joe,” Charles Kelley performed “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and then “Hey Good Lookin’” with Ashley Monroe, who also offered “Bartender’s Blues.” Moon Taxi brought “The Race Is On” while a very pregnant Holly Williams sang “I Saw The Light.” Phosphorescent shined with “Guitars, Cadillacs,” Michael McDonald played “You Don’t Know Me” and “Busted,” and Mandy Barnett sang “Walk The Line.” Hunter Hayes performed “Fast As You” and “Folsom Prison Blues” before the Kings of Leon chorus (including Garrett Hedlund from Country Strong, and Hayden Panettiere from Nashville) rounded out the evening with “Friends In Low Places.”
Festivities continued through Sunday, featuring Margot’s Margot McCormack, 404 Kitchen’s Matt Bolus and more.
Music City Food + Wine is produced by Vector Management’s Ken Levitan and Andy Mendelsohn, Kings of Leon, Jonathan Waxman, and C3 Presents (Austin Food & Wine Festival, Austin City Limits Music Festival, and Lollapalooza).

Five-Story Condo Development Planned For 30 Music Square West

A rendering of planned condo space at 30 Music Square West.

Bravo Development’s Tim Reynolds has announced his plan to develop 30 Music Square West in the Music Row area. A five-story development featuring condominiums and restaurant space is planned, where the history of RCA Studio A, which previously occupied part of the property, will be commemorated in narrative panels and photos. The new construction will bring 147,000 square feet and building will commence in spring 2015. The development will include 80 upscale residential units, ranging from one bedroom layouts to penthouse suites. Amenities will include a rooftop community area, and a dog park. Approximately 2,000 square feet of restaurant space, which will tribute the history of RCA Studio A, will also be included.
Bravo is in discussions with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum regarding ways to salvage the six chandeliers that will be left in the studio once the console, recording equipment, furniture and other contents, which all belong to the tenant, are removed.
The developer has given a deadline of 5 p.m. on Sept. 30 for those who want to submit a reasonable offer to purchase the building or pursue alternative plans.
“I have always respected those who felt the studio could be saved and from the beginning Bravo has considered all options to do so,” said Tim Reynolds, owner of Bravo Development.  “At the same time, I must soon move forward with my plans now that I have done my due diligence and determined that salvaging the building is not structurally or financially feasible. Bravo and the design team at Smith Gee Studios are very excited about the development and the plans we have made to honor Studio A.
“Music Row has long been a neighborhood of creative people who want to live and work in a close-knit environment near the heart of downtown,” he continues. “This project will provide more people that opportunity by marrying the comforts of high-end, custom homes with the ease and convenience of urban living. We also have gone to great lengths to ensure that it appropriately commemorates what occurred in those walls so that the legacy of Studio A is never forgotten.”
