Celebs Helping Charities

Carrie_underwoodCarrie Underwood has established the CATS Foundation (Checotah Animal, Town, and School) to help with causes in her hometown area of Checotah, Oklahoma. She says, “My hometown is extremely supportive of me and I feel blessed to be able to create something as a way of giving back; to say thank you.” The CATS Foundation will help the community with general causes, needs and services. Private resources will fund the assistance. The first donation will be announced soon.

Acclaimed songwriter Craig Wiseman returns as host of the 5th annual Stars for Second Harvest concert, to be held Sept. 29, 7:30 PM at the Ryman Auditorium. Sponsored by O’Charley’s, the writer in-the-round style show features Rodney Atkins, Phil Vassar and Heidi Newfield, to name a few. She joins Tim McGraw, Keith Anderson, Dierks Bentley, Danielle Peck, Randy Houser and others for the concert and ATV trail ride which benefits the Buckhorn Children’s Center.

Golf enthusiasts have a second reason to be excited, because the annual Writer Cup golf tournament, benefitting The Nashville Mission and The Room In The Inn, will be held Wednesday, September 30 and Thursday October 1 at Henry Horton State Park in Chapel Hill, Tennessee. St. Jude Street Party, Stars For Second Harvest, Blood Drive

Country-Cares-LogoSt. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® will host a street party to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the very successful Country Cares for 
St. Jude Kids fundraising program and thank the local music industry for its support through the years. The festivities on Thurs., Aug. 20 will include burgers, beverages, music, games and some special guests in the dunk tank.

The party will be 5-8 PM at Roy Acuff Place, between 17th and 18th Aves. S. It is open to the music industry and will be hosted by the St. Jude Country Cares Advisory Board and Country Cares program founder Randy Owen and ALSAC/St. Jude COO Dave McKee.

H2H Lines Up Top Talent For Fundraiser

h2hTim McGraw will headline the 2nd Annual Halfway to Hazard Charity Trail Ride, a weekend of music and over 1,000 ATV’s on Aug. 22-23 in Eastern Kentucky. Hosted by Halfway to Hazard—the duo signed to McGraw and Byron Gallimore’s StyleSonic Records—the concert will also feature Dierks Bentley, Danielle Peck, Gabe Garcia, and Krista Marie performing to raise money for Buckhorn Children’s and Family Center in Crockettsville, Kentucky. Special appearances will be made by NASCAR legend Kyle Petty, Motorcross great Ricky Carmichael, and country artists James Otto and Keith Anderson, who will participate in the ATV ride.

Last year’s inaugural event drew over 7,500 people and raised over $110,000 for Buckhorn Children’s and Family Center, an organization committed to caring for suffering children and families in Kentucky and Ohio.

Halfway to Hazard is currently on a radio tour promoting their new single, “I Know Where Heaven Is.” The single began impacting Country radio on July 20 and will appear on the duo’s yet-to-be named sophomore album (StyleSonic/Picnic Hill Records/Bigger Picture) due out in the third quarter of 2009.

Benefit News: Compilation Album, NASH-CAR, More

enterpriseNumerous Nashville artists have contributed songs to the We Are Enterprise project to help rebuild the high school in Enterprise, Alabama which was destroyed by a tornado in 2007. Darryl Worley, George Jones, Tracy Lawrence, Richie McDonald, Lorrie Morgan, Aaron Tippin, Deborah Allen, John Anderson, Clint Black, Joe Diffie, and Shelly Fairchild appear on the album, some of them singing songs crafted exclusively for this project, and others recreating classics such as “Amazing Grace.” Music business partners James Stroud and Ronnie Gilley spearheaded the project for Gilley’s hometown.

Matt Gary and Billy Reasons will perform at the NASH-CAR event to benefit the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital on Thursday, July 30, downtown on 2nd Avenue. Reasons’ debut single, “Crank the Hank,” was produced by Teddy Gentry and the accompanying video will be filmed during his performance at NASH-CAR. The event will kick-off with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Drivers Association rolling into town. The haulers will be parked on 2nd Avenue where fans will be able to get an inside sneak peek at the world of racing via truck tours.

On Aug. 1, The Nashville Palace will host the first annual Rock the Walk Benefit Concert with performances by Rissi Palmer, Ashley Ray, and The Rust. Highlights of the evening will include celebrity host Evan Farmer (TLC’s While You Were Out) and proceeds will go to Autism Speaks and the TN Walk Now for Autism, as well as local Autism Music Education programs. A separate event, Walk Now for Autism, will take place at the Nashville Superspeedway on Oct. 17, with all proceeds going to Autism Speaks. On Wednesday night (7/22), multi-platinum MCA recording artist and award-winning songwriter Josh Turner headlined the Nashville Songwriters Association International’s inaugural “It All Begins With A Song” Performance Series at the Wildhorse Saloon. During the sold-out show, he invited special guests/hit songwriters John Anderson, Shawn Camp and Pat McLaughlin to the stage for acoustic sets. The packed-house was treated to Turner’s hit singles, including “Long Black Train,” “Firecracker” and “Another Try.” Turner was also presented with a Lifetime Membership to NSAI for his continued support.

Music Row Ladies Gear Up For Golf Tourney

ucpThe 22nd Annual Music Row Ladies Golf Tournament is in full swing again on Monday, July 27 at Old Natchez Country Club to benefit United Cerebral Palsy of Middle Tennessee (UCP). Celebrity players and caddies participating are Jason Aldean, Joey Feek (Joey & Rory), Rachel Proctor, Emily West; songwriters Hillary Lindsey (“Jesus, Take the  Wheel,” “This One’s For The Girls”), Lori McKenna (“Stealing Kisses”) and Liz Rose (“Teardrops on My Guitar”).

Josh Turner Kicks Off NSAI Benefit Series

josh-turnerJosh Turner is set for the debut installment of NSAI’s “It All Begins With A Song” Performance Series. The event, kicking off Wed., July 22 at the Wildhorse Saloon, will benefit the Nashville Songwriters Association International’s legislative efforts.

“On behalf of all American songwriters NSAI is extremely grateful to Josh for helping launch what will be a permanent series supporting the work we do. NSAI was founded as an advocacy organization for songwriters. In recent years the organization’s work has increased the value of and the respect for songwriters’ copyrights and helped secure the growth of future royalties,” said NSAI President and Grammy-nominated songwriter Steve Bogard.

Turner—a songwriter himself—has had back-to-back platinum albums and his current project, Everything Is Fine, was certified Gold in just four weeks.

Industry Tourney Aids Children’s Hospital

The 36th Annual Music City Tennis Invitational (MCTI) donated $118,473.19 to the Center for Child Development at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. The money was raised by 125 tennis players who participated in the tournament, along with sponsorships, donations, auctions and a songwriters’ concert that benefited the event.

The annual MCTI charity tennis tournament has raised more than $1 million for Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and is the only fundraiser for the Center for Child Development.  A Nashville tradition since 1973, this year MCTI received two esteemed awards from tennis organizations. The United States Tennis Association (USTA) selected MCTI as the 2008 Charity Tennis Event of the Year, and the United States Professional Tennis Association recognized MCTI as the Southern Charity Tennis Event of the Year for 2008.
