/by LB CantrellEmily Stephenson. Photo: Ebru Yildiz
Nashville-based Emily Stephenson is now the President of Publishing at Downtown Music. The news was announced on Thursday (March 30) by Downtown Music Holdings.
Stephenson most recently served as the division’s Vice President of Business Operations during her 10-year tenure at the company. She has been responsible for all aspects of publishing administration and client services for Downtown’s songwriter and publishing clients, including Ryan Tedder, Big Yellow Dog and the John Lennon Estate. Downtown’s publishing administration services currently have nearly 2 million songwriters and more than 1.5 million copyrights under management.
In her new role, Stephenson will oversee all publishing efforts, including client acquisition and business development, A&R, rights management, and client services for the group’s publishing companies—Downtown Music Publishing, Songtrust and Sheer. She will report to Downtown Music President, Pieter van Rijn.
It was also announced today that London-based Mike Smith will exit his position as Global President of Downtown Music Services.
“Thanks to Mike’s fantastic leadership over the past three years, Downtown’s publishing divisions are in a great position to align our efforts and maximize revenue for our clients, whether they use Downtown Music Publishing, Songtrust or Sheer,” Stephenson shares. “This unified approach means that Downtown can offer the industry’s leading publishing services both at scale and in-depth, working more closely with our current and future clients at every stage.”
Since Downtown Music Publishing was established in 2007—and Songtrust in 2011—publishing has been at the core of Downtown’s mission. The company divested its owned song catalog in 2021 to focus exclusively on providing publishing administration and creative services.
Under Stephenson’s leadership, Downtown Publishing will focus on employing the strengths of each division to create an aligned offering that shares technology and expertise. According to Downtown, Songtrust has experienced significant growth over the past five years and in 2022, reached the milestone of having distributed over $100,000,000 in royalties to independent songwriters, producers and creators.
Stephenson’s immediate team includes Jedd Katrancha, who has been promoted to Chief Commercial Officer, Publishing after sixteen years at Downtown. New York-based Katrancha was the first hire to be made by founder, Justin Kalifowitz, and subsequently led the company’s creative services and sync licensing business from its inception. In his new role, Katrancha will report to Stephenson and oversee Business Development, A&R, and Sync for Downtown’s group of publishing companies.
Of the news, Downtown Music President Rijn shares, “Emily is a proven leader and Downtown Publishing is excellent hands. Mike stewarded Downtown Music Services through a period of great change and leaves it as a global leader. Singer, author and actress Georgette Jones has signed an artist management deal with Gerald Murray Music. Jones is the daughter of country music legends and Hall of Fame couple, George Jones and Tammy Wynette.
Jones performed “Daddy Come Home,” a duet she had recorded with her father when she was 10 years old, on the 1981 HBO show George Jones with a Little Help from His Friends. George and Georgette also performed “You and Me and Time” on the last George Jones album before his death, Burn Your Playhouse Down: The Unreleased Duets (2008). In the 2022 Showtime original series about her parents, George & Tammy, derived from Jones’ book, she has writing credit for two episodes and appeared as a backup singer in the final episode of the series. Additional on-screen credits include appearances with Leslie Jordan and Olivia Newton-John in five episodes of the 2008 television series Sordid Lives as her mother Tammy Wynette. Jones sang on the soundtrack for the show as well.
As a solo artist, Jones has recorded five albums and has also collaborated with other artists, including a duet with Billy Yates (“Golden Ring”), a duet with Mark McGuinn (“Better a Painful Ending”) and “I Know What You Did Last Night” feat. Vince Gill.
“I have had the pleasure of knowing Georgette personally and working with her as an agent. I am extremely proud she has chosen us to help further her career endeavors and to work with her on future projects in a management capacity. She is a sincere and beautiful person and an amazingly talented artist. In the plans are new music and tour dates. Beyond the legacy left by her parents, Georgette has created and continues to grow her own remarkable legacy through music and other artistic endeavors. It is truly an honor for me as a manager to represent a highly regarded artist such as Georgette Jones and to be part of her career administration and her team,” shares Murray.
“I’m thrilled to work with Gerald for many reasons, but I have no doubts that Gerald is a man of his word and the hardest-working person I know. I’m looking forward to a long and great future ahead of us,” shares Jones.

GoFundMe Set Up For Emma Grandillo Following Brain Surgery
/by Lorie HollabaughEmma Grandillo
A GoFundMe page has been created for Emma Grandillo, who for the last nine years, has worked for Grammy-winning producer/songwriter Jay Joyce at Neon Cross Studios.
Grandillo had successful surgery to remove a benign meningioma in her brain behind her eye. She underwent surgery previously for this condition—the first time was back in 1997. Her brain, incision, and eye are healing well from the recent surgery, but it will take a few months for the swelling to subside and the nerves to recover completely. In the meantime, Grandillo is left unable to drive herself to work or to her doctor appointments, and is relying on Uber, Lyft, and friends for transportation.
Grandillo was a writer, vocalist, and bassist for the band In Pursuit on MTM/Capitol Records. Their song “Walking on a Thin Line” reached No. 18 on the pop AC charts. She also worked at Capitol Records from 1991-2006, and after leaving Capitol, organized special events, including artist and writer/publisher showcases at various Nashville hot spots. She also worked with songwriters Monty Powell and Anna Wilson.
She has volunteered for the Garth Brooks Teammates For Kids Foundation and hosted directors, producers, and actors from films showcased at the Nashville Film Festival. She also recently secured the new single for the group Runaway June, “Broken Hearts (Do Broken Things).”
The GoFundMe page to help Grandillo can be found here.

BMI Wins Higher Live Concert Rate For Creators In Court Ruling
/by Liza AndersonThe Honorable Louis L. Stanton of the Southern District of New York has ruled in favor of BMI in their court debate over live concert rates with Live Nation, AEG and the North American Concert Promoters Association (NACPA). BMI affiliates will now receive a rate that is 138% higher than the live concert industry’s historical rate.
Judge Stanton also ruled that this new rate will be applied to an expanded revenue base, taking into account the way modern promoters monetize concerts. This includes tickets sold directly onto the secondary market, servicing fees received by the promoters and revenues from box suites and VIP packages.
“This is a massive victory for BMI and the songwriters, composers and publishers we represent. It will have a significant and long-term positive impact on the royalties they receive for the live concert category,” states Mike O’Neil, BMI President & CEO. “We are gratified the court agreed with BMI’s position that the music created by songwriters and composers is the backbone of the live concert industry and should be valued accordingly. Today’s decision also underscores BMI’s continued mission to fight on behalf of our affiliates, no matter how long it takes, to ensure they receive fair value for their creative work.”
He continues, “While we’re thrilled with this outcome, we find it incredibly disappointing that it took millions of dollars and years of litigation to get Live Nation, AEG and NACPA to finally pay songwriters, composers and publishers what they deserve.”
