Nancy Jones Shares Story Of Life With George Jones In New Book

Playin’ Possum: My Memories of George Jones, a new book due out in September, offers readers an intimate look at country legend George Jones through the eyes of Nancy, his wife of thirty years.

The book explores the force behind the country legend—a strong, feisty woman who not only saved his life from cocaine addiction, alcoholism and other self-destructive behaviors, but also was instrumental in saving his soul. Married for more than thirty years to the country star, Nancy knew George better than anyone else on earth—the good and the bad, the horrendous and the hilarious.

For the first time, in Playin’ Possum, Nancy reveals the true insider perspectives and little-known poignant as well as humorous stories about the country music legend, his battles with cocaine, alcohol, abusive behavior toward her and others, and his battles against the demons that sought to control him and ultimately destroy him. Nancy knew there was a good man inside George, and she felt strongly that God had given her the assignment to help him, even if he hurt her.

The new book will be published by Forefront Books on Sept. 12, which is George’s birthday.

Blackberry Smoke Releases New Track ‘Dig A Hole’ From Upcoming LP

Blackberry Smoke will release their new album, Be Right Here, Feb. 16 via 3 Legged Records/Thirty Tigers. Ahead of the release, they have unveiled the lead single, “Dig A Hole,” today (Aug. 25).

The new track, written by lead singer Charlie Starr and keyboardist Brandon Still, reminds us that life is short, so we better enjoy the ride.

“We each have a finite amount of time on this earth, so you probably want to make the most of it,” says Starr. “Eventually for all of us, they are going to dig a hole, so make it count.”

Produced by Dave CobbBe Right Here is filled with Blackberry Smoke’s signature rock anthems, Americana-leaning ballads and country rock jams, and celebrates the simple joys of life, the fleeting moments and little bits of luck found along the way. The project was recorded at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A and Cobb’s Georgia Mae in Savannah, and includes special guest vocals from The Black Bettys.

“We always track live together, but this time we had all our amps and drums and everything in the same room,” says Starr. “It’s just as natural and as real as possible. The last album was very raw too, but with this one I remember different times I would say, ‘I think we should redo that,’ and Dave was like, ‘No, leave it that way. That way it’s magical.'”

In addition to their studio albums, Blackberry Smoke has released several other projects including the EPs StonedThe Southern Ground Sessions and Live From Capricorn Studios as well as Homecoming: Live In Atlanta, a live album and concert film, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Album Sales chart.

Trace Adkins Celebrates Two-Decade Anniversary As Opry Member

Trace Adkins marked another career milestone Wednesday night (Aug. 23), celebrating his 20th anniversary as a Grand Ole Opry member.

Invited in 2003 by the late Little Jimmy Dickens, who stood on a stepladder to ask the towering star face-to-face, Adkins was officially inducted on August 23 that year by his personal hero, Ronnie Milsap, and has gone on to represent the Opry family with numerous performances since.

During the show, Adkins delivered performances of “Kiss You All Over” with Exile, plus a special four-song set to close the show featuring hits “Songs About Me” and “You’re Gonna Miss This.” Surprising Adkins in between songs, the Opry rolled a congratulatory video message from Blake Shelton, where he joked, “I’m so happy that I could not be there.”

“For me, it means that I’m a better man than I would have been had I not been a member of the Grand Ole Opry because I take it very seriously,” said Adkins. “And I try to conduct myself every day, keeping in mind that I’m a member of the Grand Ole Opry and I represent this institution, and I don’t want to do anything that might disrespect my family at the Grand Ole Opry. It probably kept me out of jail more times than I would have gone.”

Adkins wrapped the night with the title track from his latest album, The Way I Wanna Go, while a montage of photos from the past 20 years of Opry moments lit up the signature barn. A cake-cutting ceremony also marked the momentous occasion.

Adkins’ latest single, the value-centric red-white-and-blue anthem, “Somewhere In America,” inspired him to host a free benefit concert called “Somewhere In America: A Concert For Mayfield” presented by KIOTI Tractor in May, which raised funds and support for the western Kentucky area after it was devastated by tornadoes last December. A video for “Somewhere In America” was also filmed during the show, and premiered on CMT in July.
