A Nashville crowd flocks to the free Jake Owen block party on Monday evening (Aug. 19).
Ain’t no party like a parking lot party…
Wait, wrong song.
Jake Owen may not have recorded Lee Brice’s “Parking Lot Party,” but he proved he’s a master at throwing one. Nashville country fans turned out en masse for a free block party last night (Aug. 19) in the parking lot of performing rights organization BMI. According to Owen’s publicist, 20,000-plus attendees gathered for the performance. Fans began gathering hours before the concert; lines eventually wrapped around the BMI building and stretched several blocks down Music Row’s 16th Avenue.
The party launched with a performance by
The Cadillac Three, whose country-rock blend amped up the crowd in anticipation of headliner Owen. Before Owen’s performance, a more formal No. 1 celebration was held for Owen’s chart-topping single “Anywhere With You,” co-written by
Ben Hayslip,
Jimmy Yeary and
David Lee Murphy. What better way to celebrate a No. 1 song than with several thousand diehard fans? ASCAP’S
Michael Martin and BMI’s
Clay Bradley were on hand to honor Owen and the songwriters, along with producers
Rodney Clawson and
Joey Moi, EMI Blackwood’s
Tom Luteran, Sony Nashville’s
Gary Overton, THiS Music’s
Rusty Gaston, Old Desperado’s
Doug Casmus and Avenue Bank’s
Ron Cox, who made a donation in the name of the writers to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee. “I think this is the biggest No. 1 party in Country music,” said Bradley.
Afterward, Dee Jay Silver kept the energy up by spinning a mix of country, rap and Top 40 tunes. Owen came onstage accompanied by flashes of stage lights, sailing through several of his up-tempo songs and slow-burning ballads, including “Barefoot Blue Jean Night,” “Anywhere With You,” “The One That Got Away,” “Yee Haw” and “Startin’ With Me.” He repeatedly thanked the audience for coming out, telling the crowd how much it meant to him and his band.
“This Monday night is meant for gettin’ drunk,” sang Owen as he wrapped up a rendition of his single “Alone With You.” Beer bottles danced above the crowd as attendees held up their drinks in solidarity. From making use of a catwalk stage to lying on the stage in order to take photos with the fans, Owen did his best to make the raucous outdoor party seem like an intimate performance. He also treated the crowd to a new ballad, “What We Ain’t Got.”

Of course, what’s a Nashville concert without additional artist performances? Just hours before the show, it was announced that
Dierks Bentley and
Florida Georgia Line would be crashing the party. FGL joined Owen for “Summer Jam,” a track written by FGL’s
Brian Kelley and
Tyler Hubbard, and recorded by Owen on his
Endless Summer EP.
Thomas Rhett performed his single “It Goes Like This,” an anthem that immediately got the fans’ hands in the air, with both girls and guys singing along in full voice. Bentley and Owen got the packed crowd going a little crazy with “5-1-5-0,” though the momentum was slightly stalled when the performers’ microphones went out. Ever the professionals, Bentley and Owen got the crowd to shout and signal 5-1-5-0 until the sound returned.
Sound problems persisted throughout the evening; however, the crowd hung on to the very last note, caught up in their own Southern summer barefoot, blue jean night.

Gill and Franklin Share 'Bakersfield' With 'MusicRow' Readers
/by Jessica NicholsonEach copy of the 2013 Artist Roster includes a complimentary disc of Gill and Franklin’s Bakersfield. The MCA Nashville project finds the two sterling musicians paying homage to the work of Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, along with musicians who made the Bakersfield sound unique including Don Rich, James Burton, Ralph Mooney, Tom Brumley and others.
“Bakersfield is a record from two guys that adore that music and these songs were the perfect vehicle to showcase the guitar and steel guitar relationship,” say Gill and Franklin in a letter included with the CD. “Buck and Merle were musicians and everything they went about was from a musician’s mindset: it was equally supportive of the people that played and sang on their records. And that is why we’re both drawn to Buck and Merle like we are.”

Ashley Cleveland's 'Black Sheep' Memoir Due In September
/by Lorie HollabaughAshley Cleveland
Renowned singer/songwriter Ashley Cleveland is releasing a heartfelt memoir about her journey through addiction and self-destruction back into the light, and how she discovered renewed faith in the Lord in her new autobiography, Little Black Sheep. The book shares her story of growing up in a troubled home in Knoxville, Tenn., and how as a rebellious teen she dove headlong into addiction and chaos, while discovering her talent for music at the same time.
An unplanned and unwanted pregnancy ultimately helped the troubled singer begin her journey out of the depths of depression and destruction, and little by little through Christ’s help she turned the devastation into a platform to bring hope and courage to others. She also found sobriety and a happy married life, along with musical success.
“Little Black Sheep is a story of sadness, trouble, a little bit of tragedy, redemption, and a little bit of hope, which for me, is a lot of hope,” says Cleveland. “Even though it’s a memoir, it’s a biography, ultimately it’s not really about Ashley, it’s about the one who rescued her.”
Since her debut in 1991 on Atlantic Records, Cleveland has recorded eight albums. She was the first woman to be nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rock Gospel Album category, and the only one ever to win the award three times for Lesson Of Love in 1995, You Are There in 1998, and Before The Daylight’s Shot in 2007. In addition to her own music, Cleveland has provided backing vocals for over 300 recordings, and has performed with artists like John Hiatt, Steve Winwood, Etta James, and Emmylou Harris, among others.
Cleveland will be on hand to sign copies of her new memoir in Nashville at Parnassus Bookstore on Sept. 5 at 6:30 p.m. She’ll perform several songs and read an excerpt at the local signing as well.

Darling got the audience in on the singing fun by having them sing “Happy Birthday” to her guitarist.

Kari & Billy – Are You Ready For The Weekend
/by contributorBilly was born at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL and was raised in the town of Mulberry. He spent the majority of his days in the great outdoors, hunting, fishing and trying to catch anything that would run from him. In contrast, Kari was born in a little town called Roseau in northern, MN, only 10 miles from the Canadian border! She had an early fascination with the arts and participated in dance, community plays, speech competitions and musical programs with her family. At the age of 7 she began taking violin lessons. “I took lessons at the Manitoba Conservatory of Music in Winnipeg, Canada”, Kari recalls, “And boy, am I blessed to have a mother who loves me and believes in me because she drove me to lessons, 5 hours round trip, usually in a blizzard!” She may have studied classical violin at a music conservatory but Kari’s first love was always country music. In high school she found an outlet for that love when she joined a local band who played on weekends in the surrounding area of her small town.
It was a little later in life that Billy started pursuing his love of music. Before the age of 22 he never would have imagined he would ever sing in front of a crowd but after much encouragement from a close friend who happened to overhear him singing, Billy decided to try it out in a singing competition. Shortly after this he was asked to hit the road with a band as their lead singer. He taught himself to play guitar and harmonica and just like that, his musical journey began!
Kari & Billy may have entered the uncharted waters of the music business at different times and in very different ways, but the Lord’s hand was at work when they both happened to make the big move to Nashville around the same time in hopes of furthering their careers. Before forming as a duo, Kari & Billy experienced some personal success with their music. Kari played fiddle and mandolin for and toured with many artists including John Rich/ Big $ Rich, Steel Magnolias, Trace Adkins and Gretchen Wilson. She performed with John Rich on live national television for the finale of Celebrity Apprentice and was in a music video filmed for College Game Day on ESPN with Big $ Rich. Billy recorded his own album of all self-written, self-produced original songs with award winning Nashville musicians and as an independent artist released a single and music video which received well over a million views on YouTube.
Upon meeting, it was easy to see that the pair shared a similar perspective and outlook on life and after getting the opportunity to play a few gigs together, they realized the similarities didn’t stop there! Billy felt that Kari’s fiddle playing and harmony vocals completed his sound so well that soon he didn’t want to play a show without her! “Our meeting was reminiscent of the movie Pretty Woman”, Billy states with a twinkle in his eye, “Well maybe I wasn’t a rich guy and Kari wasn’t a call girl…but she IS a pretty woman, so you can see how the basic idea is the same!” A witty sense of humor is another thing this new husband and wife duo shares and they know to use it on stage. They playfully joke back and forth and occasionally poke a little fun. “Most importantly we like to have fun on-stage!”, Kari laughs. “We don’t have on-stage personas, we’re just ourselves and try to connect with our audience on a personal level, no matter if we are playing to a crowd of 20 or 20,000!” People who had seen the two each play separately say there is just “something truly special” about them together. Since their first gig as an official duo, Kari & Billy have recorded a full length album of 16 original songs as well as an EP of 6 additional songs which Billy wrote and the couple produced together. They have played some of the biggest state fairs and festivals in the country, from Florida to Alaska and Wyoming to Connecticut. The duo recently wrote and produced all the music for the Drury Outdoors television series Thirteen sponsored by Under Amour on the Outdoor Channel.
It is safe to say that a common love for music is what initially brought Kari & Billy together, but what makes them blend so seamlessly? Anyone who has been to a Kari & Billy concert could tell you it is obvious the duo respects each other, not only as artists and musicians but as individuals. Kari & Billy have a sound that can only come from a deep appreciation and love for one another…AND many hours of driving up and down the road traveling to gigs singing their favorite songs a cappella!
“This crazy business has its peaks and valleys but what a blessing it is that we get to experience all of it together! We have set out to create music that will make people smile, think, cry or even just dance! Every time we get onstage we focus on providing a little something for everyone, from high energy fiddle songs that will get you on your feet and meaningful lyrics that will touch your heart. Most importantly, though, we want people to leave our shows knowing how thankful we are that we had the opportunity to sing our music together for them!” That, is what Kari & Billy are all about.

BBR Music Group’s Red Bow Records has signed Chase Bryant to its artist roster.
Bryant, a 20-year-old Orange Grove, Texas native, grew up around the country music scene. Bryant’s two uncles, Jeff Bryant and Junior Bryant, helped found the country band Ricochet, known for the hit “Daddy’s Money.”
Bryant is co-managed by Gene Dries and Neal Spielberg of Spielberg/Dries Management.
“Everyone here at RED BOW and the BBR Music Group couldn’t be more excited about Chase. He’s such a complete talent and artist – he’s not only a great singer but a great songwriter and great musician as well. Just as important, he knows who he is and is one of the few young artists I’ve ever signed that could actually go in and produce his own album. He’s so focused it’s almost mind-boggling.” says Benny Brown, President/Owner of the BBR Music Group. “We’re going to be getting to work right away and the whole world is going to know what a huge talent Chase Bryant is before long.”
