THOMAS MICHAEL RILEY/Between The Tick n’ the Tock
Writer: Thomas Michael Riley; Producer: none listed; Publisher: none listed; TMR

BROTHERS OSBORNE/It Ain’t My Fault
Writers: John Osborne/TJ Osborne/Lee Thomas Miller; Producer: Jay Joyce; Publishers: WB/Trampy McCauley/All the Kings Pens/Songstein/Warner-Tamerlane/The Country and Western Music, ASCAP/BMI; EMI (track)

SAM BROOKER/Stay
Writers: Brent Anderson/Sam Brooker; Producers: Jamie Tate; Publishers: Sea Gayle/Artist Revolution, no performance rights listed; SB
– Softly plaintive and aching. His soft tenor swims in a pool of chiming guitars, gentle percussion, hushed harmonies and ringing sonic touches. Enchanting. As this illustrates, his skills as a writer-artist remain potent.

Thomas Rhett’s “Die A Happy Man” Brings Hope, Healing For Nashville Native
/by Jessica NicholsonShondell Howse
Editor’s Note: A random Uber ride connected MusicRow’s Sherod Robertson with Uber driver Shondell Howse. During that short trip from the office to Bridgestone Arena, she shared her story, reminding us all of the impact a song can have.
Thomas Rhett’s signature tune, “Die A Happy Man,” the story of a man who needs nothing more than his woman’s “crazy love,” was inspired by his wife, Lauren (Gregory) Akins.
Though the song was intensely personal for Thomas Rhett (and for co-writers Sean Douglas and Joe Spargur), the song’s romantic message has touched countless listeners. One of those listeners is Nashville native Shondell Howse.
“The first time I heard it, it was the beat I noticed. I listened to it and instantly I called my mom. I said, ‘I just heard this song and you’ve got to hear it.’ I started listening to the words and I was like, ‘Wow, you can tell this man truly loves his wife.’”
Snippets from the song’s lyrics closely resembled her relationship with husband Quincy “Q” James. Shondell met James in Murfreesboro. The couple was together for seven years before they wed on Sept. 22, 2007.
“It’s just little bits and pieces of that song that really I relate to because of my husband. Dancing around the fireplace is something we used to do in our apartment. Driving a sports car up the coast of California, I always wanted to do that. When Quincy and I went to Las Vegas one year, we got a convertible and drove it across the California line, just to say we had been to California,” she recalls. “He had a love for music. We would always ride and listen to music.”
Unbeknownst to either of them, Quincy had an undiagnosed heart condition, and passed away suddenly in August 2010.
She credits “Die A Happy Man” as a source of comfort and good memories of a husband Shondell says taught her to love.
“He would always say, ‘If I die today, I’m ok.’” Shondell recalls. “There was nothing he wanted more than for me to be his wife. The one thing he would say is, ‘As long as I’ve got your hand, I’m fine. I’m happy.’
“I think about that song and smile. It gives me comfort knowing he was happy when he passed away. He knew I totally loved him.”
Shondell also says the song reignited her love for country music. “I love country music and I appreciate it. I love artists that are open-minded and now it’s reaching out to all people. If it continues to reach out to all people, I can see it helping our country heal as a whole,” she says, citing Tim McGraw’s “Humble and Kind” as another touching track.
“If we could all live the way he sings in that song, and just follow those simple instructions, how wonderful would the world be? That’s what makes the world go around, is love. Country music gives us love. It’s about every day life, and you never know who you will touch with that music.”
Dolly Parton’s My People Fund Climbs To $9.3 Million, Begins Distribution
/by Eric T. ParkerIn part, the fund was supported by Smoky Mountains Rise: A Benefit for the My People Fund telethon on Tuesday, Dec. 13. Thanks to generous people from coast to coast and Parton’s friends, the total amount raised during the event has climbed to $9.3 million.
“It’s a blessing during this holiday season that we are able to help as many families as we have so far,” Parton said. “We know there are more families out there who need our help and we encourage them to be in contact with us before our January distribution.”
More than 1,300 families are said to have been displaced during the tragedy. A pre-application for those affected is available at dollywoodfoundation.org.
“As, Dolly said, the response has been overwhelming,” David Dotson, Dollywood Foundation President said. “We will distribute all $9.3 million to the families affected. That will insure all of the money raised will go to where Dolly promised it would go.”
The next distribution is Jan. 26 and 27, 2017 at the LeConte Events Center in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Chad Green, Sr. Creative Director of Vital Records & DMP, says “Not only am I a fan of the music of As We Ascend, I am even more a fan of these guys. Jake, Justin, and Robert are incredible men who seek to make a real difference in their genre and, ultimately, in the hearts of all who hear. They are tackling some heavy and highly personal subject matter in these songs, and from the initial response, the songs are being very well received. With the acquisition comes news that SpinMedia CEO Stephen Blackwell will be named Chief Strategy Officer of the newly acquired company, to oversee revenue, digital growth and product.
According to a release, the acquisition will boost the Media Group’s revenues to more than $100 million a year, two-thirds of which will come from digital and video.

“Bringing in these historic brands under Billboard allows passionate music audiences to enjoy rock to urban to pop in one massive portfolio,” said Media Group co-president Janice Min. “The power and scale of these combined, complementary digital assets will deliver more ways to reach our audience through TV, video, live events, social and online through these brands.”
