Is everybody on vacation?
This week’s DISClaimer stack of sounds sure seems like it. Superstars are in short supply and the songwriting pickin’s are slim.
Mind you, there are still some highlights, namely Scotty McCreery, Sheryl Crow, Chris Janson, Tanner Adell, Billy Currington and our Disc of the Day winner, Rodney Crowell.
Shaylen stages her debut in the column and takes home a DISCovery Award.
BILLY CURRINGTON / “King of the World”
Writer: Troy Jones; Producer: Carson Chamberlain; Label: Mercury Nashville
– An upbeat, bluesy celebration of summer, loaded with dobro and slide guitar licks. He’s got a boxed lunch, some weed, Merle’s tunes, a devoted dog, a fishing pole and a boat. Feelin’ fine.
MAE ESTES / “Mountain of a Man”
Writers: Jon Decious/Lauren McLamb/Liz Rose/Paul Sikes; Producer: Paul Sikes; Label: Big Machine Records
– A peppy, double-time beat drives this snappy ditty praising a 6’10” former boyfriend. A dobro solo, an echoing gang of backup singers and her pert soprano delivery are among the audio highlights.
GAVIN ADCOCK / “Last One to Know”
Writers: Erik Dylan/Gavin Adcock/Jack Rauton/Luke Laird; Producer: Jay Rodgers; Label: Thrivin Here Records/Warner Music Nashville
– This ACM New Male nominee takes a break from his rowdy, redneck-rebel image with a mournful lament. He’s still not much of a singer.
LUKE COMBS / “Back in the Saddle”
Writers: Dan Isbell/Jonathan Singleton/Luke Combs; Producers: Chip Matthews, Jonathan Singleton, Luke Combs; Label: Sony Music Nashville
– A roaring declaration of …. exactly what? He’s hollering powerfully about launching some kind of comeback. It’s a potent sounding track, if somewhat lyrically vague.
CALI TUCKER / “Last Name”
Writers: Cali Tucker/Derek Robertson/G’harah “PK” Deg/Tricia Battani; Producer: G’harah “PK” Degeddingseze; Label: Mother Tucker Music
– This former contestant on The Voice is the daughter of LaCosta Tucker and the niece of Tanya. Her new single addresses having a famous name, but needing to stand on her own. Cali’s nicely phrased vocal rides atop a burbling, multi-layered, heavily edited, electronic pop production.
SCOTTY McCREERY & HOOTIE & THE BLOWFISH / “Bottle Rockets”
Writers: Bobby Hamrick/Brent Anderson/Darius Rucker/Dean Felber/Derek George/Frank Rogers/Jeremy Bussey/Jim Sonefeid/Mark Bryan/Monty Criswell/Scotty McCreery; Producer: Frank Rogers; Label: Triple Tigers
– A tuneful recollection of teenage summer on a Carolina beach with his girlfriend. The bonfire night was perfect, especially when she asked him to sing “Hold My Hand.” At the mention of the title, the Blowfish chime in with glorious harmony singing. An irresistible single.
SHAYLEN / “Loneliest Man”
Writers: Andrew Baylis/Conor Matthews/Riley Thomas/Shaylen; Producers: Julian Raymond, Shaylen; Label: Nashville Harbor Records & Entertainment
– He dumped her, but she’s okay with it, knowing he’s headed on a journey that will make him, “the loneliest man in the world.” Confidently sung and well produced. Languid and lovely, yet not especially compelling as a song.
RODNEY CROWELL / “Twenty-One Song Salute (Owed to G.G. Shinn and Cléoma Falcon)”
Writer: Rodney Crowell; Producer: Tyler Bryant; Label: Rodney Crowell
– Hidden in the lyric are the titles of 21 songs that helped to forge his musical life. The track rocks splendidly and Crowell remains a master at delivering a Texas-accented country performance. Tyler Bryant provides the harmony vocal. Highly recommended. This singer-songwriter belongs in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
TANNER ADELL / “Giddy Up Gorgeous”
Writer: Tanner Adell; Producers: Cambo, leelee, LOUALLDAY; Label: TA
– The titled tune of Adell’s current tour is the lead track on her new Don’t Pet EP. It’s a lilting statement that she won’t be a victim and aims to steer her own destiny. A tasteful, spare production has just the right touch for her personable vocal delivery.
CHRIS JANSON / “Wild Horses”
Writers: Chris Janson/Kelly Roland/Pat Bunch; Producers: Chris Janson, Michael Wayne Wilkes; Label: Harpeth 60 Records/Warner Music Nashville
– If she’s looking for a wild guy, he’s her man. The country-rock track thumps along with zest and Janson gives it his all. Highly listenable.
THE JACK WHARFF BAND / “Moonshine Man”
Writer: Jack Wharff; Producer: Charlie Worsham; Label: Big Machine Records
– His almost-shrieking tenor vocal fronts sawing fiddles, fleet mandolin picking, electric guitar bursts and furious Southern-rock drumming. Intriguing and worth some spins.
SHERYL CROW & THE REAL LOWDOWN / “The New Normal”
Writers: Audley Freed/Fred Eltringham/Jen Gunderman/Peter Stroud/Robert Kearns/Sheryl Crow; Producer: Sheryl Crow and The Real Lowdown; Label: The Valory Music Co.
– Collaborating with her longtime band, the new Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee returns to her pop-rock roots with this snappy bopper. The outspoken lyric critiques AI/robot culture, “the leader of the free world,” fake news and more. A/C programmers take note.
JOSH ROSS / “Later Tonight”
Writers: Alexander Izquierdo/Ashley Gorley/John Byron/Ryan Vojtesak; Producer: Matt Geroux; Label: Core Entertainment
– His “Single Again” was a big ol’ hit. The follow-up is a finger-bopping ode to moving on after a breakup. Except when he gets back home, she’s still on his mind. The melody has all the complexity of a nursery rhyme. This one’s all about the percussive production.

The Countrypolitan Hotel & Carter Vintage Guitars Unveil Songwriting Competition
/by Lorie HollabaughThe Countrypolitan Hotel and Carter Vintage Guitars have teamed to launch “Songs from the Countrypolitan,” a songwriting competition for aspiring artists.
The competition will help tell a story inspired by the unique history of the building that houses the Countrypolitan. Located at the corner of Printer’s Alley and Union Street, The Countrypolitan recently completed a $10 million renovation, and the hotel design is inspired by the “Nashville Sound” and “Countrypolitan” eras of the 1960s and 70s in country. Rooted in Nashville’s deep history of music, the building has stories in its walls, and applicants are asked to take inspiration from the history and spirit of the hotel while penning their songs, with the connection to the theme being considered in the judging round.
Judges for the competition will be musicians Nikki Lane and Jonathan Terrell, and the winner will be announced on Aug. 30. The winner will have the opportunity to professionally record their song in a demo session at Carter Vintage Guitars, and will also be invited to perform their song live at the Countrypolitan’s Armadillo Wednesdays Showcase during AmericanaFest, among a few other perks.
“Our building is rooted in the Nashville spirit, full of history and stories,” says Bill Bacelieri, General Manager of The Countrypolitan. “The energy that defines the Countrypolitan has inspired artists and travelers alike, and we can’t wait to see who it inspires next through this contest. The Countrypolitan isn’t just a hotel–it creates a connection to a place that represents the unconventional spirit of Nashville, a city built on stories, songs and a little bit of outlaw charm.”
“At Carter Vintage Guitars, we’re passionate about supporting the next generation of musicians. Partnering with The Countrypolitan gives us a powerful opportunity to help emerging artists record and share their music,” says Ben Montague, Founder and CEO of TNAG Global, which acquired Carter Vintage Guitars in 2022. “All of our iconic demos and artist sessions are filmed and recorded in our High-End Acoustic Room—home to some of the rarest and most historic instruments in the world. The winner will have the chance to perform in the very same space where some of the most prolific players on the planet have played. With its striking, recognizable backdrop and unparalleled vibe, it’s a truly inspiring environment where artists can bring their vision to life.”
“Songs from the Countrypolitan” is open to songwriters 18 and older, and submissions must be entirely original compositions, with all artists credited, and are currently being accepted here. Submissions are now open, and artists have until Aug. 15 to submit their song.

Mike Reid & Joe Henry Team For New Project ‘Life & Time’
/by Lorie HollabaughGrammy-winning singer-songwriters Mike Reid and Joe Henry have collaborated on a new album, Life & Time, set for release Sept. 5 on Work Song Inc via Thirty Tigers.
Life & Time sees the two hit songwriters turning a new page: Reid was an NFL All Pro before turning to a career in music which yielded 12 No. 1s and an induction to the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, and Henry penned 16 albums as a solo artist and has blazed a path as a Grammy-winning producer for Solomon Burke, Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint, Julian Lage, and Bonnie Raitt.
The duo’s new album includes 12 songs rooted in piano ballads and feature upright bass, pedal steel and more. The idea for the collab was born when Reid and Henry first met sharing a table in the dining hall at Rodney Crowell’s Nashville songwriting camp. They exchanged shared influences, people that have contributed to their evolution as thinkers, readers and writers.
“I just heard a couplet in my head and stopped what I was doing and reached out to Mike, reminded him who I was, and asked if he might want to try writing something together,” Henry recalls. “And he uttered a phrase that we’ve repeated to each other since: “Let’s push off the dock and into the fog and we’ll see what we find.”’
Through dozens of songs written as a pair, with no agenda, Reid and Henry came to the realization that there was an album made along the way.
“There’s something very mysterious that happens to me emotionally, whatever that is… physically… when I sing Joe’s words, I just… believe them, and more than my mind, my body believes them,” adds Reid. “I feel physically a belief in this stuff. More than my mind, my body knows… feels these words, and I like that because ultimately, when I do something that isn’t working, I feel it physically in my body. I think, often, whether creating or not, or planting a rose or making a good lasagna, that part of you is always attempting to recognize itself. And the delight for me in this whole time with Joe is I got to recognize something in me that I only suspected was there. Granted, I did suspect it, but I got to recognize it before I moved on from here.”
In support of the project, the pair will embark on a U.S. tour in September, performing tracks from the album and featuring each as solo artists on selections from their separate catalogues, all with a shared backing band. The tour includes stops at New York’s City Winery Loft, Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music, Philadelphia’s City Winery, and more with West coast dates planned for early 2026.
Life & Time Track List:
1. “Sleeper Car”
2. “The Bridge”
3. “Room”
4. “Stray Bird”
5. “Life And Time”
6. “Martins Ferry”
7. “Weather Rose”

John Prine’s Classic ‘Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings’ Gets Deluxe Treatment For 30th Anniversary
/by Lorie HollabaughA deluxe edition of John Prine’s beloved Grammy-nominated album, Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings, is being released via Oh Boy Records on Sept. 12 in celebration of its 30th anniversary.
The digital deluxe edition features five previously unreleased demos and alternate takes, along with the never-before-heard track “Hey Ah Nothin’,” out now with an accompanying video. Cherished for its warmth, wit, and depth, the new edition of Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings provides an even closer look at one of the most joyful and creatively fertile periods in Prine’s storied career.
Originally released in 1995, Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings was produced by Howie Epstein of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and captured Prine at a personal and artistic high, filled with the joy of new love, fatherhood, and unshakable creative chemistry. Backed by an all-star ensemble including Heartbreakers pianist Benmont Tench and guest vocals from Carlene Carter and Marianne Faithfull, Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings flows effortlessly from the wry contentment of “Ain’t Hurtin’ Nobody” to the epic storytelling of “Lake Marie,” a song Bob Dylan once cited as one of his favorites.
With its blend of heartfelt ballads, surreal narratives, and playful humor, Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings remains one of Prine’s most expansive works at 14 tracks and nearly an hour in length, and captures the richness of the midlife experience. The album will also be released on vinyl for the first time ever, newly remastered from the original tapes.
The Prine family will host the fourth annual “You Got Gold: Celebrating the Songs of John Prine” in Nashville from Oct. 9-12. This will be the final year for this event and will feature performances at the Ryman Auditorium (October 10, John Prine’s birthday), The Basement East (Oct. 9), The Bluebird Cafe (Oct. 9), and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s CMA Theater (Oct. 11).

Kelleigh Bannen Debuts ‘Apple Music Nashville Sessions’ EP
/by Lauryn SinkPhoto: Courtesy of Apple Music
Kelleigh Bannen has partnered with Apple Music for an exclusive EP, Apple Music Nashville Sessions: Kelleigh Bannen.
Recorded in Nashville, this exclusive session includes performances of her 2019 fan favorite “Happy Birthday,” Eric Church’s “Smoke a Little Smoke,” The Red Clay Strays’ “Wondering Why” and “Nothing On” featuring Drake White, a new take on her February 2025 duet with Lady A’s Charles Kelley.
“This session was something I wanted to do for myself and for my daughters. After my oldest daughter was born, I had a really hard time getting my power back as a singer. I was in a vulnerable place. Being pregnant with our second daughter opened up all those insecurities again,” says Bannen. “With the help of my friend Jason Lehning, I was able to surround myself with an incredible foundation of vocalists. Recording this session, especially with this band, was one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had. At the end of the day, I want my daughters to see me taking risks, working hard for a dream. That’s exactly what this project felt like.”
A Nashville native, Bannen is a singer, songwriter, and host of Today’s Country Radio and her eponymous show on Apple Music Country.
Each featured song was picked for the project by Bannen.
“‘Happy Birthday’ is one of those songs that got away from me. It’s my favorite song I’ve ever written, and I wanted to give it another look. I loved that we had the chance to really spotlight the harmonies on this version. Eric Church is one of the greats of this generation, as a risk taker, creative, and songwriter. I admire him so much. It was a blast to do a version of ‘Smoke a Little Smoke’ and just let it be loose and fun,” Bannen shares.
She continues, “‘Wondering Why’ by The Red Clay Strays is one of those songs I immediately sent to all my girlfriends saying, ‘You have to listen to this!’ You’re in the middle of the story from the first line. We kept the ‘she’s’ in the lyrics and sang it like a love song to my friend group. My girls keep me afloat and champion me like no one else, this one’s a love letter to them. Drake White brought so much texture and soul to [“Nothing On”]. I love his voice and am obsessed with how it turned out.”
The full EP is available now.

Aaron Armstrong Inks With Riser House, The Song Factory & Jake Mitchell
/by Madison HahnenPictured (L-R): Allison Pilotti (Riser House), Brandon Perdue (Riser House), Aaron Armstrong, Jake Mitchell and Kirby Smith (Riser House).
Aaron Armstrong has signed an exclusive publishing deal with Riser House, The Song Factory and hit songwriter/producer Jake Mitchell.
Originally from North Carolina, Armstrong attended Lipscomb University where he interned with Riser House. Outside of school and interning, he started to build his songwriting catalog, eventually penning tunes for Vincent Mason and Eli Winders, among others.
“I didn’t realize Aaron was a songwriter when he started interning with our marketing team,” says Brandon Perdue, SVP of A&R + Publishing at Riser House. “Once we heard some of the songs Aaron was writing, we started placing him in some sessions and consistently received great feedback. After learning that Jake was already starting to mentor Aaron, we jumped at the opportunity to partner on launching Aaron’s career. We see Aaron as a truly special talent who will be a major player in the next generation of hit-makers.”
“I’m beyond grateful for this team and stoked for the journey ahead! Brandon, Kirby [Smith], Allison [Pilotti], and the Riser House crew are the best team I could ever want in my corner, and Jake’s mentorship has been an integral part of helping me grow as a writer,” adds Armstrong. “I’m incredibly thankful to get to do this every day with people I love and respect highly. Let’s get to work!”
“I can’t imagine my career without the encouragement and guidance from peers and mentors who invested time and energy in me. I knew my next step in this industry was to return that investment to the next generation of songwriters,” says Mitchell. “After working with Aaron just a couple of times, it was beyond obvious to me that he’s the flagship writer I wanted to champion. I’m so thankful that Riser House also sees what I see in Aaron, and for their partnership on this deal. I couldn’t be more excited for everyone to get to know Aaron and hear the future of Nashville!”
This signing also signals the official re-launch of legacy publishing company The Song Factory. Their past roster includes Jon Pardi, Ashley McBryde, Dustin Lynch, Bart Butler and more. Riser House CEO Jennifer Johnson brought The Song Factory under the Riser House umbrella upon opening in 2017.
