MusiCares Temporarily Halts COVID-19 Relief Fund Aid Applications

In March, MusiCares—the charitable arm of the Recording Academy—launched its COVID-19 Relief Fund to help music industry members and artists affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the fund launched, MusiCares has raised nearly $14 million in aid and has approved 20,200 individuals to receive assistance—more than double the number of people the charitable arm typically serves in one year.

However, on Thursday evening (April 30), the organization released a statement noting it has had to temporarily stop accepting new applications for aid through the COVID-19 Relief Fund, as request for aid has exceeded funds available.

The Recording Academy provided the following statement to MusicRow:

The effects of COVID-19 have been devastating to our music community and the need for relief remains dire. While we are incredibly grateful for all the support we have received and are humbled to be in a position to help those who are so desperately in need, the fight to help those struggling in our community is far from over.

Since forming in March, the MusiCares COVID-19 Relief Fund has raised nearly $14 million dollars to aid thousands of music industry professionals affected by the pandemic. It is the largest amount of money raised, with the most recipients helped, for any single event in our history. To date this year, we’ve vetted and approved 20,200 individuals to receive assistance. For context, that’s more than double the number of music people we typically serve in one year. But, there’s still so much work to be done.

Unfortunately, until we can raise more money for our COVID-19 Relief Fund, we can no longer accept new applications from those seeking assistance. While our goal is always to provide support to everyone in need, we are currently bound by the funds available.

We aren’t giving up and continue to work relentlessly to raise additional funds, while furthering our commitment to provide leadership in other ways. These initiatives include continuing our advocacy work in Washington D.C., providing guidance for artists as they navigate this new territory, and fostering discussions with a broad group of leaders about the future of our industry.

As an industry and a community, this is one of the most trying times we’ve ever faced, but we know that music can unite us in our struggle to console, entertain and provide some levity during dark times. We are committed to facing the challenges ahead alongside all those who have and will join our cause.

iHeartMedia Launches New COVID-19 Help Resource For Small Businesses

iHeartMedia has launched the Small Business Crisis Resource, a new initiative to help small business owners across the country obtain information on available benefits and resources during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Small Business Crisis Resource will serve as a centralized source for small business owners and includes a weekly iHeart Small Business newsletter, as well as a website providing information on the Federal stimulus package, up-to-date news, state-by-state resources, links to top business-focused podcasts and more, at iHeartRadio.com/SmallBusiness.

Small business owners also have the opportunity to sign up for special webinars, which will kick off this Monday, May 4 featuring iHeartRadio’s Elvis Duran joining senior officials from the U.S. Small Business Administration and discussing ways small businesses can find assistance and vital information during this unprecedented time. In March, the government approved a historic $2 trillion stimulus package that includes $376 billion in relief for small businesses. Since it can be challenging for small business owners to understand the key details of the stimulus package, including eligibility requirements, this new resource helps business owners know exactly what they must do in order to apply for Paycheck Protection Program loans and additional support from the U.S. government.

In addition, iHeartMedia is offering local business owners bonus media incentive opportunities and extended payment terms to help with their advertising and marketing “re-opening” strategy.

Paul Williams Appointed Program Director Of WKDF Nashville

Paul Williams has been named Program Director of Cumulus Nashville country station WKDF-FM.

Williams adds WKDF programming duties after being named Director of Programming for Westwood One Nashville earlier this month. In that role, Williams oversees the marketing, content, and operations for Westwood One’s programming which includes The Ty Bentli Show, The Blair Garner Show, Nights With Elaina, American Country Countdown, Country Countdown USA, Country Gold, and With Elaina.

Williams was most recently Vice President of Marketing & Artist Development for Reviver Entertainment Group in Nashville. He had previously served as an executive at RCA Label Group Nashville and as Operations & Marketing Director for the nationally syndicated Kidd Kraddick Show. Prior to that, he programmed KPLX-FM in Dallas, and spent six years as a liaison to national radio at Universal Studios Orlando radio broadcast center.

ERNEST Launches ‘Just Being ERNEST’ Podcast


Newcomer artist ERNEST has launched the weekly podcast Just Being ERNEST, where he will offer his opinion on current events and will host business owners, fellow artists and songwriters, while offering a platform for earnest conversations.

“I’ve always wanted to have a talk show, but I never knew exactly what that would look like,” shares ERNEST. “This podcast is a little bit of everything. I’m excited to give my take on current events, talk life and music with some of my friends in the music business, and introduce y’all to people I admire and am inspired by in different fields – local business owners, athletes, doctors, visual artists, and more. This podcast is a platform for people to have a good time expressing themselves and hopefully share a side of them they may not otherwise get to showcase. It’s truly a podcast for people who are ‘just being ERNEST’.”

The singer-songwriter released his debut project, Locals Only, in 2019 via Big Loud Records. He has co-written hits for Morgan Wallen (“More Than My Hometown”), and Diplo (“Heartless”) as well as Chris Lane (“Big, Big Plans” and “Hold You Tonight” ft. Gryffin), as well as two tracks for Sam Hunt’s album SOUTHSIDE including “Let It Down” and “Breaking Up Was Easy in the ’90s.”

BMG Opens myBMG App To All Artists And Songwriters


BMG is opening up its myBMG app to artists across the music industry to allow them to pitch for songs from BMG songwriters.

Artists can submit written briefs or even videos to BMG’s writer roster, which includes Jessie Reyez, Erika Ender, Victoria Monet, Jason Evigan, Camille Purcell and more.

The app-based version of BMG’s long-time ‘Watchlist’ service for songwriters means artists will be able to reach out directly to the BMG clients worldwide who use the myBMG app.

Erika Ender, the multi-Platinum, Latin singer-songwriter, performer and producer, who signed to BMG in February 2020, said, “I’m enjoying everything about the Watchlist. There you get to see the artists who are looking for songs, the projects, the producers, where they’re from, what they’re looking for exactly and it’s such a powerful tool for us all to do our job the best way we can.”

BMG VP, Global Writer Services Marian Wolf said, “myBMG has been a pacesetter for the industry ever since we launched it in 2013. Now as well as connecting our clients to their royalty and other key information and insights, myBMG will act as a connector between artists and songwriters helping generate new creative opportunities for both.”

BMG’s initial focus with its new Watchlist is the company’s own recording artists.

“As of today [April 29] BMG’s myBMG Watchlist includes pitch opportunities from around the world including access to priority projects from BMG artists such as Jason Aldean and Spencer Sutherland,” said Wolf. “While it is available in a desktop version, we think the app will prove most attractive to artists and songwriters, enabling writers to pitch songs to artists or vice versa at anytime and anywhere.”

The Watchlist is also open to artists from other companies and current listings include pitches from labels including Arista Records, Atlantic Records, Capitol Records, Columbia Records, RCA Records, Republic Records, Universal Music Australia, Warner Music UK, Sony Music Germany, SM Entertainment and Avex Music Japan.

The app will complement BMG’s in-house creative team supporting songwriters in today’s growing global market.

“This is not a replacement for the time-honored music publishing skill of developing songwriter careers and connecting writers and songs with artists,” said Wolf, “but it is a significant enhancement.”
Recent successful songs from placements and collaborations initiated by BMG’s global writer services team include “When God Whispered Your Name” (Keith Urban), “I Dare You” (Kelly Clarkson), “I Love Me” (Demi Lavato), “Girlfriend” (Mabel), and “Cool” (Dua Lipa).

The addition of Watchlist functionality to myBMG was previously planned for Q4 2020 but was brought forward because of the coronavirus crisis, said BMG CTO Sebastian Hentzschel.

“In the current crisis artists and writers need all the help they can get,” he said, “so as soon as this thing hit, our teams worked very hard to accelerate the integration of Watchlist functionality into myBMG.

“BMG was very early in launching an online client portal for publishing clients. It was an obvious expression of our key insight that the music business was going to have to get a whole lot more transparent and user friendly. Since then we’ve had the launch of the app back in 2017 and the addition of recordings. Others have now followed and that’s all to the good, but our view now is that myBMG should sit at the center of our day-to-day relationship with clients. That means not just royalty and copyright information, but synch updates and now Watchlist too.

“An app will never replace an artist or songwriter’s personal relationship with BMG – ultimately we’re a music company not a technology company – but myBMG is a key element in BMG’s commitment not just to fairness and transparency, but to service too.”

National Museum of African American Music Adopts Street In Downtown Nashville

The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM), in partnership with Metro Nashville Public Works, has adopted a street in downtown Nashville to deepen its connection with its home in Music City.

NMAAM will be responsible for four blocks of historic Jefferson Street in Nashville. Through the Adopt-A-Street program, the museum will host street cleanups throughout the year once social distancing mandates have been lifted.

Similar to NMAAM, Jefferson Street is rooted in the preservation of black music and history. It stretches from the historically black Tennessee State University to Fisk University, where the Fisk Jubilee Singers were founded.

Metro Nashville Public Works’ Adopt-A-Street program is a way for organizations and businesses to help keep Nashville beautiful and show pride in the surrounding community. This effort is in conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Transportation and its Nobody Trashes Tennessee campaign.

“Jefferson Street is the musical heartbeat of this city,” said H. Beecher Hicks, III, president and CEO of NMAAM. “Becoming stewards of such an important part of African American culture in Music City is humbling and is a responsibility we do not take lightly. Nashville is growing every day, and we want to show that we are here, not only to educate and entertain, but to support the community we live in.”

NMAAM is currently under construction at Nashville’s Fifth + Broadway development and expects to open in September 2020.

Trace Adkins, Dustin Lynch, Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani To Play Opry May 9

Trace AdkinsDustin Lynch and Blake Shelton will perform on the Grand Ole Opry’s 4,923rd consecutive Saturday night broadcast on Saturday, May 9. Gwen Stefani will also make her Grand Ole Opry debut that night, joining Shelton for their duet performance of his current single “Nobody But You.”

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Opry will stage a remote broadcast performance as part of a regularly scheduled show. Adkins and Lynch will perform on stage at the Opry House, after which Shelton and Stefani will play for fans around the world via a remote broadcast from Shelton’s farm in Oklahoma, where the two artists are safely sheltered at home. Adkins, Lynch, and Shelton all share an Opry bond: Adkins invited Shelton to become an official Opry member in 2010, and extended the same invitation to Lynch in 2018.

The Mechanical Licensing Collective Announces New Hires

The Mechanical Licensing Collective has announced new hires including Leigh McCorkle, Dae Bogan, Ellen Truley, Serona Elton, and Lindsey Major, who will help lead the company’s customer experience, marketing and communications, education and outreach, human resources, and third-party partnerships efforts.

MLC Chief People Officer McCorkle was most recently Executive Director of Human Resources for BMI, and will lead The MLC’s efforts to build a diverse team of professionals who are passionate about the MLC’s mission of serving songwriters and music publishers and providing them with exceptional service.

MLC Head of Third-Party Partnerships Bogan is a well-known music creators’ rights advocate, founder of several music technology companies, and adjunct lecturer at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Bogan will lead The MLC’s strategy of engaging third-party entities that provide support to creators and publishers in the areas of rights administration, data management, operations, and education.

Head of Education Partnerships Elton is a professor, Director of the Music Business & Entertainment Industries Program, and Associate Dean of Administration at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music.  A lawyer by background, she also possesses extensive operational experience dealing with music royalties, mechanical licensing, and data standards. Elton will lead The MLC’s effort to engage future members of the industry currently studying music business and related subjects at colleges and universities across the country and around the world in support of The MLC’s outreach and education efforts.

Chief Marketing Officer Truley will leverage her experience in marketing, brand strategy, digital initiatives, advertising, and public relations on behalf of The MLC to build a robust and proactive communications operation that will engage and inform the music community and the public at large.

Head of Customer Experience Major will be responsible for designing an effective customer experience strategy and leading a customer experience team for The MLC. Previously, Major helped companies such as SmileDirectClub and Lyft develop and enhance their customer service operations, developing effective staff training programs and building innovative support tools to improve quality interactions.
