Alyssa Bonagura Talks The Sisterhood Band, Growth & Her ‘New Wings’ [Interview]

Alyssa Bonagura. Photo: Kacie Q

As the daughter of Michael Bonagura and Kathie Bailie of Bailie & The Boys, Alyssa Bonagura is no stranger to the life of an artist. Growing up playing and writing with her parents as musical inspirations, she quickly began writing and producing for artists such as Jessie James Decker, Jana Kramer, and Steven Tyler (“I Make My Own Sunshine”).

In 2015, Bonagura and Ruby Stewart, daughter of Rod Stewart, joined forces to become The Sisterhood Band. Soon after signing with Sony Music Nashville in 2017, the duo made their Grand Ole Opry debut and released the Summer Setlist EP.

However, after spending five years as The Sisterhood Band, the pair decided to part ways during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the physical distance between them, the girls saw creative differences and the opportunity to explore new territories for themselves.

“I was actually grateful that the pandemic happened because it gave Ruby and I time to chill out. We didn’t really need to make a statement because we didn’t really know what was happening,” explains Bonagura. “Five years is a long time, and I guess it was just time for it to change. Sometimes change doesn’t happen when you’re really expecting it. I think that those are the most uprooting times in our lives, and it was really hard for me.”

With a combination of being forced into lockdown, moving in with her parents in Franklin, Tenn., and her significant career change, Bonagura was able to use the thick of COVID as a time to heal, reassess, and figure out her new direction. Included in that period of rediscovery was an outpouring of new and resurrected songs.

“That time during lockdown turned into this really healing, inward time for me. It started out really bad, but then it became amazing to have that connection again with myself, my family, and my music,” Bonagura says. “I’m actually grateful for it all, looking at the other side of it now. I’m really glad I went through all of that because otherwise it wouldn’t have brought me here with all this new music.”

On Friday, July 2, Bonagura put out her first solo single, “New Wings,” which she co-wrote with Tawgs Salter over Zoom amidst quarantine. While the two had never met prior to the call, the culmination of feelings and experiences from the previous year quickly came together.

“Meeting someone for the first time over Zoom is cool because there’s no ego since you’re not in person. I think you’re able to really be yourself, which is cool,” she shares. “I started writing a bunch on Zoom and one of the writes was with Tawgs. He had brought this track to the session and we started talking about life and what both of us had been through and that transformation. The music he brought was so inspiring and I found a really special poem that made it all came together so perfectly.”

The poem that inspired the new track, entitled The Lesson of the Butterfly by Paulo Coelho, describes the importance of the growing process and of life’s challenges.

YouTube video

“The poem talks about how this man was walking past this branch and he saw that a butterfly was struggling to emerge out of its cocoon. After watching it struggle for a while, the guy felt bad for it and wanted to make the process easier, so he cut open the cocoon to let the butterfly fly out. He cuts open the cocoon and the butterfly falls out but isn’t able to fly because its wings are underdeveloped,” Bonagura explains. “The whole point of the story is that these struggles that we go through are really what make us stronger. We can’t cut those processes down because they’re all necessary for our growth. We don’t think about it but the process that it takes to get from a worm to a butterfly is not easy, but you have to get your wings strong so that you can fly.”

As far as future plans for her music go, Bonagura has plenty in store for the coming months. In addition to a handful of singles that will be peppered throughout the remainder of the year, she also has plans to release her first solo album in 2022. Though she’s doing it independently and without the backing of a label, Bonagura is excited for what lies ahead and using her new wings.

“I just want to play and share this music, so I’m doing things independently and creating art. I’m hoping that it’s helping people in some way get through this weird time and maybe bring them some kind of hope.” Bringing it full-circle, she shares, “That kind of goes to the sentiment of this whole song: when you get a pair of wings, you want to fly so just go for it. That’s what I’m doing, and I was scared shitless the whole time doing it. I’m so grateful that I did it, though. I’m grateful that the song is out, and now it gives me a little bit more confidence to keep putting songs out and doing it myself.”

Dusty Black’s Debut EP, ‘Who Are You,’ Available Now

Black Label Country Records’ artist Dusty Black has released his debut five-track EP, Who Are You, available everywhere now. The project was produced by country recording artist Colt Ford and Grammy award-winning producer Noah Gordon.

From speaking about life’s lessons in “Right Church, Wrong Pew” to “Somebody’s Mama” featuring Gary LeVox, the heartfelt track about raising a daughter, the five-song EP features songs penned by some of Nashville’s best songwriters, including Mitchell Tenpenny, Rhett Atkins, Jacob Durrett, Monty Criswell, Derek George, and more.

“This collection of songs perfectly expresses my life–past, present, and future,” shares Black. “I’m so excited to finally have new music to share.”

A Memphis native, Black inherited his love of country music from his grandfather, Floyd Black “Junior,” who played banjo and guitar in Johnny Cash’s band, and from his father, Allen Black, who sang country and influenced his musical style from a young age.

Black’s debut single, “Right Church, Wrong Pew,” won the MusicRow DISCovery Award in a weekly DISClaimer in December of 2020.

Travis Denning’s Sophomore Release, ‘Dirt Road Down,’ Set For August

Travis Denning is set to drop his new six-song sophomore collection Dirt Road Down on Aug. 6. The Mercury Nashville recording artist shared a new track from the collection, “Jack And Coke,” which combines Denning’s favorite cocktail with a nursery-rhyme setup. The new project also includes previously-released tracks “Call It Country” and Denning’s current single “ABBY” which has over 27 million streams to date.

Dirt Road Down also includes three new tracks co-written by Denning and produced by Jeremy Stover that contain a uniquely reverent view of small-town life and explore what makes Denning tick. “Grew Up With a Truck” is a dose of feel-good country nostalgia, while “I Went Fishing” allows listeners to get to know the guy behind the guitar. The project’s title track also explores Denning’s love of a twisted, pure-country lyric. Among the writers contributing to the project are Thomas Archer, Jessi Alexander, Chase McGill, and Ashley Gorley.

“It’s kind of cheesy, but to me this release makes me feel like we’ve gone a little further down the path of who I am – which I like to think is a dirt road, for sure,” Denning says of the upcoming release. “I hope those listening get a piece of me they were expecting with this project, and I hope they get a piece of me that they weren’t, too.”

Ahead of the release, Denning is gearing up to hit the road as support on Brothers Osborne’s We’re Not For Everyone Tour starting in Philadelphia on July 29.

Dirt Road Down Track List:
1. Call It Country (Travis Denning, Jessi Alexander, Chris Stevens)
2. Dirt Road Down (Travis Denning, Taylor Phillips, Cole Taylor, Will Weatherly)
3. Jack And Coke (Travis Denning, CJ Solar, Chris Stevens)
4. Grew Up With A Truck (Travis Denning)
5. I Went Fishin’ (Travis Denning, Thomas Archer, James McNair)
6. ABBY (Alternate Version) (Ashley Gorley, Matt Jenkins, Chase McGill)

Luke Bryan is one of country music’s most multifaceted personalities: perennial radio hitmaker, television star, touring juggernaut. He is currently riding the success of new single “Waves,” the fifth single from Born Here Live Here Die Here (Deluxe Edition) and the follow up to the project’s already four consecutive No. 1s. Among his other ongoing accomplishments are the recently wrapped fourth season as a celebrity judge on American Idol, and adding the 2021 ACM Entertainer of the Year trophy to his collection. Bryan is gearing up to hit the road for his Proud To Be Right Here Tour in July, as well as bringing back his Farm Tour this fall. His new ventures include his first headlining run of shows in Las Vegas in 2022, and the upcoming Luke Bryan: My Dirt Road Diary five-part docuseries. Since his debut, Luke Bryan has garnered 26 No. 1 hits.

Luke Combs recently notched his 11th consecutive No. 1 single with “Forever After All.” It is also the 6th consecutive No. 1 from Combs’ deluxe album, What You See Ain’t Always What You Get. He is the reigning CMA and ACM Male Artist and Album of the Year winner. His massive fall headlining arena tour will feature a new in-the-round stage design. Combs will also perform his first ever headlining stadium show in Boone, North Carolina on September 4. Combs recently made history as the first artist to have their first two studio albums spend 25 weeks or more at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart—breaking Taylor Swift’s previously held record at 24 weeks. Combs has been voted MusicRow Artist of the Year the last two years.

Eric Church is nominated in two categories this year: Artist of the Year and Song of the Year for “Hell Of A View.” The talented songman recently tallied his 10th career No. 1 with “Hell Of A View,” an endearing anthem about rebellious love featured on his critically acclaimed new triple album Heart & Soul. The project is the result of a month spent writing and recording a song per day while sequestered in rural North Carolina. The reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year returns to the road on his 55-city The Gather Again Tour where he will perform in-the-round sets for the first time in his career. Church’s longtime producer, Jay Joyce, is nominated for MusicRow Producer of the Year.

Miranda Lambert shined with versatility this year: releasing the celebrated The Marfa Tapes, continuing the success of her Wildcard album, and embarking on a wild night with Elle King on their infectious collaboration, “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home).” Continuing to diversify, Lambert made history by becoming the first female country star to have a bar and restaurant on Broadway in Nashville when she opened Casa Rosa. She collaborated with Jack Ingram and Jon Randall on The Marfa Tapes and an accompanying film, which was recorded raw and loose with just a pair of microphones and an acoustic guitar. Lambert earned her third Grammy Award when Wildcard was named Best Country Album. Wildcard producer Jay Joyce, is nominated for MusicRow Producer of the Year.

Thomas Rhett transitioned from the pop/rock stylings of his previous albums with a return to his roots. Country Again: Side A was released on April 30, with Side B planned for release later this year. Lead single “What’s Your Country Song” marks Rhett’s 17th career No. 1 and 11th consecutive No. 1. Other hits from the album include “Country Again.” Most recently Rhett dropped “Things Dads Do,” teaming up with his dad Rhett Akins. His headlining The Center Point Road Tour kicks off on Aug. 13 with back-to-back nights in Orange Beach, Alabama. His producer Dann Huff is nominated for Producer of the Year.

Chris Stapleton released the acclaimed album Starting Over in November, launching both the album and the title track straight to No. 1. It is Stapleton’s second chart-topping single as an artist following 2018’s “Broken Halos.” Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb, the record won Album of the Year at the 56th ACM Awards. Cobb is also nominated for MusicRow Producer of the Year. Stapleton has returned to the road with his extensive All-American Road Show. Among his recent highlights are joining forces with fellow Grammy Award-winner H.E.R. for a special performance of her single, “Hold On,” during the 2021 CMT Music Awards. Stapleton’s newest single, “You Should Probably Leave,” is Top 30 and climbing at country radio.

Double Down Music, a recently launched publishing division of PIA Music Group, has added multi-award-winning songwriter and artist Lee Brice to its roster.

The Curb Records artist has amassed over 2.8 billion on-demand streams, and over 3.6 billion spins on Pandora. He recently reached No. 1 at country radio with “One of Them Girls,” following his No. 1 with Carly Pearce on “I Hope You’re Happy Now,” and his No. 1 single, “Rumor,” which was nominated for Single of The Year at the 55th Annual ACM Awards. Brice also took home the prize for Single of the Year and Musical Event of the Year at the 56th Annual CMA Awards for his duet with Pearce.

“In addition to his outstanding recording career, Lee Brice is one of the most prolific songwriters in music!” says Ryan Dokke, CEO, PIA Music Group. “The visual nature of his writing and what he can bring to life with a lyric and a melody put him among the best artist-writers in our business. Personally, it is a thrill to once again be able to work with Lee in a different way this time. His ideas and energy are infectious! He brings so much to the PIA Music Group/Double Down family.”

The new signing reunites Brice with Dokke, who served as head of radio promotion for Curb Records prior to being named Sr. VP/General Manager of Curb|Word Entertainment in 2018.

“Lee Brice is a massive hit-songwriter!” says Dallas Davidson, PIA Music Group founder. “After the creative success we have had together, we now have an opportunity to work together in a bigger way and put a giant spotlight on Lee Brice, the songwriter! And it’s always special when you get to work with one of your closest friends.”
