CMT has named ten artists to its prestigious Next Women of Country (NWOC) franchise, the brand’s long-running effort to support and promote developing female talent.

The CMT Next Women of Country Class of 2022 includes:
Amythyst Kiah
Callista Clark
Camille Parker
Jenna Paulette
Julia Cole
Laci Kaye Booth
Lily Rose
Madeline Edwards
Miko Marks
Morgan Wade

For the second consecutive year, CMT’s Hot 20 Countdown will officially introduce the class of 2022 during a dedicated three-hour special this weekend on Saturday, Jan. 22 and Sunday, Jan. 23 beginning at 8 a.m. on CMT. The special will feature exclusive interviews and performances with each new NWOC member, plus a special interview with NWOC alumna Maren Morris, who reflects on her experience with the program.

“We are so excited to welcome our newest class of ultra-talented female artists into our beloved CMT Next Women of Country franchise,” says Leslie Fram, Sr. VP of Music & Talent at CMT. “Each is boldly blazing their own spirited path on their own terms, destined to make a lasting impact on country music. We celebrate this diverse group of women and look forward to supporting their work and their careers in 2022 and beyond.”

Over the next year, the new CMT NWOC class will receive cross-brand support for their music and videos across all CMT platforms, in addition to cross-promotional opportunities for ViacomCBS’ MTV Entertainment Group.

A staunch advocate for country music’s female artists, CMT first launched its Next Women of Country campaign in 2013 as an effort to support and promote developing female talent, both signed and unsigned, in a male-dominated format. This year’s class marks a total of 95 female acts that have been named as part of the program, including notable alumni such as Morris, Ashley McBryde, Brandy Clark, Brittney Spencer, Carly Pearce, Gabby Barrett, Ingrid Andress, Kacey Musgraves, Kelsea Ballerini, Lainey Wilson, Lauren Alaina, Lindsay Ell, Mickey Guyton and Tenille Arts, among others.

Randy Travis’ Documentary, ‘More Life,’ Set To Premiere On Circle Network In February

Randy Travis. Photo: Marisa Taylor

More Life, a documentary on Randy Travis featuring many of his last recorded performances, will air on the Circle Network on Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. CT.

A decade in the making, More Life started in 2011 as an intimate concert special honoring the 25th anniversary of Travis’ iconic album Storms of Life. As the film was being finalized in 2013, he unexpectedly suffered a massive stroke, leaving him unable to perform and severely limiting his speech.

“Though this documentary began as a 25th Anniversary special, it quickly pivoted into a chronicled celebration of life’s setups and setbacks, after my massive stroke in 2013. The planned few months of composing, turned into 10 years—Mary [Travis] and I thank the perseverance and patience of the wonderful team that waited and believed in it until completion… the ones that care and protect the legacy of my music,” offers Travis.

“With the colorful life I’ve lived and four rollercoaster decades in the music and movie industry, there are infinite stories to tell in a finite timeframe,” the award-winning entertainer continues. “As I watch and listen to the cadence of kind words, special memories, and well-wishes from friends and colleagues, captured in the documentary, I am reminded of the blessed life God has given me. I appreciate those who gave More Love along the way, and the fans that continue to shed More Light along my path. There aren’t words that express the gratitude I have for the ones that came along when the day was dim, the future unknown…that gave me More Life.”

“Randy Travis is the cornerstone of Warner Music Nashville, and we are both honored and humbled to share More Life with the world,” adds Shane Tarleton, EVP of Artist Development at Warner Music Nashville. “We’ve been in production for over a decade on this documentary, which shines a light on the passion that still drives one of the most important voices in modern country music history.”

Teresa George, VP of Strategic Partnerships at Circle Network, adds: “Randy Travis’ light has shined brightly over this town ever since he stepped into the music scene. We are honored to have a part in sharing this inspiring story of his courage, kindness and talent with the world.”

The documentary also features a special duet performance with Travis and Josh Turner, who appeared on Travis’ 25th anniversary album. More Life will air following the season two premiere of Upstream with Elizabeth Cook, where Elizabeth joins Travis and his wife at their home in Texas for a day of fishing.

Circle’s Day of Randy Travis will begin on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 3:30 p.m. CT and will end at 9 p.m. CT after the documentary airs. For a full lineup of the day’s programming, click here.

CRB Names 2022 Scholarship & Tom Rivers Humanitarian Award Recipients

Heather Froglear

The 2022 Tom Rivers Humanitarian Award recipient and individuals selected to receive the Rusty Walker and Lisa McKay Women in Radio Scholarships have been unveiled by the Country Radio Broadcaster, Inc (CRB).

Heather Froglear has been named the 2022 Tom Rivers Humanitarian Award recipient. She will be recognized during the New Faces of Country Music show, held during CRS 2022.

Froglear has spent 28 years on the air at KFRG and currently sits on the Board of Directors for Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital and the Country Radio Seminar’s Agenda Committee. She is the creator of K-Frogger’s for Kids Radiothon, benefiting Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. In its 20th year, the radiothon has cumulatively raised over $7 million. Froglear is also involved in several organizations, including Lifestream, the Riverside Police Officer’s Association, the American Cancer Society Inland Empire Chapter, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and more.

Each year, the Tom Rivers Humanitarian Award recognizes an individual in the country radio industry who has displayed a spirit of caring and generosity in service to their community. Named in honor of the CRB Board member, Rivers was known for his work at WQYK, Tampa/St. Petersburg and WUSN, Chicago, and was highly regarded for his public service.

“Heather is the kind of person this award was made for. She’s not about prestige or celebrity, but she has lots of both and personally commits to using them for good. The power of her empathy raises the lives of people who need her. And we all need people like her,” says CRB/CRS Board President Kurt Johnson. “CRS is proud to recognize Heather’s significant and very real service.”

Receiving the 2022 Rusty Walker Scholarship are Kyle Matthews (APD/MD, KFGE, Lincoln, NE), Spencer Campbell (Account Executive, WLVK Ft Knox, KY), and Morgan Taylor (On-Air Talent, KGRT, Las Cruces, NM), Set to receive the first-ever Lisa McKay Women in Radio Scholarship is Jacqueline Dunn Pailizzi (PM Drive and APD, WCJC, Marion, IN). Each recipient will receive complimentary registration, hotel, and airfare for CRS 2022 and will be recognized during CRS Honors, which kicks off the 3-day event.

“CRS has a decades-long mantra of ‘growth through sharing,’ and today’s award recipients fully live up to that spirit. Tom Rivers was an unselfish and empathetic broadcaster whose humanitarian acts were done with sincerity and humility. Heather Froglear is the perfect honoree for 2022 and lives up to Tom’s namesake and legacy, as her impressive list of initiatives proves,” adds CRS Executive Director, RJ Curtis. “Rusty Walker and Lisa McKay were two of our industry’s most passionate and involved mentors, encouraging younger broadcast professionals to learn, excel, and lead. CRS is proud to host these aspiring and deserving industry professionals in 2022, and we believe Rusty and Lisa would be proud.”

Walker was a Country Radio Hall of Fame inductee, an influential programmer and consultant, and mentor in the music industry. After his passing in 2012, the scholarship program was developed to continue his legacy of supporting bright, young minds in the business. Similarly, McKay successfully programmed WQDR/Raleigh for 16 years and was inducted into the Country Radio Hall of Fame in 2018. She was integral in helping the CRB launch the well-established annual Rusty Walker Scholarship program, formed to mentor up-and-coming programmers. The scholarship serves to advance younger females pursuing leadership roles in radio programming.

CRS will be held Wednesday, Feb. 23-25, and will feature educational panels, virtual networking, and workshops designed to provide instant, actionable takeaways.

DISClaimer Single Reviews: Dolly Celebrates Her Birthday With A Disc Of The Day Award

Dolly Parton. Photo: Rob Hoffman

DISClaimer has the best of the new mixed with the best of the vets today.

Our new female contenders include Priscilla Block and Hailey Whitters, both of whom have personality-packed singles for your edification. Among the promising males are Logan Mize, Aaron Lewis, Connor Smith and Seaforth with Jordan Davis.

But veterans claim the two top prizes. Taking home the DISCovery Award is Andrew Farriss. This is his debut solo effort, but he has logged plenty of miles in the Oz rock band INXS (”New Sensation,” “Suicide Blonde,” “Need You Tonight,” etc.).

Yesterday was Dolly Parton’s birthday. My present is a Disc of the Day award for her fresh sounding “Big Dreams and Faded Jeans.”

PRISCILLA BLOCK / “My Bar”
Writers: Priscilla Block/Stone Aielli/Lexi Hayden; Producers: Robbie Artress/Jake Curry/Justin Johnson; Label: Mercury
–She’s wonderfully feisty while claiming her space at her favorite watering hole. When an ex walks in, she lets him know he’s intruding. The track rumbles splendidly and her vocal has personality to the max. Love this.

AARON LEWIS / “Get What You Get”
Writers: Aaron Lewis/Ira Dean/Dan Tyminski; Producers: Aaron Lewis,/Ira Dean/Ben Kitterman; Label: Valory
–This man’s honky-tonk singing voice continues to impress. The ballad’s premise is that sooner or later you have to take the consequences for the choices you make. Stop lying to others and to yourself. The album drops at the end of the month, and this makes me eager to hear it.

DOLLY PARTON / “Big Dreams and Faded Jeans”
Writers: Dolly Parton; Producers: Richard Dennison/Tom Rutledge; Label: Butterfly/UMG
–The instrumental track is hot and tight in Dolly’s finest record production in years. The punchy, rolling tempo underscores the yearn of a gal headed to Music City to pursue her dreams. With her “Scent from Above” perfume, re-launched ice cream flavor, chart-topping Christmas album, multi-Platinum international certifications and gospel Grammy Award, the superstar is as relevant as ever. This dandy tune was inspired by her debut novel, written with James Patterson. The book and album–titled Run, Rose, Run–are both due the first week in March. Other merch with the launch includes guitar picks, stickers, t-shirts, bookmarks, shoe laces, aprons and a red-marbelized vinyl version of the LP.

CONNER SMITH / “Didn’t Go Too Far”
Writers: Connor Smith/Mike Dragstrom/Matt Jenkins; Producer: Zach Crowell; Label: Valory
–The “Learn From It” and “I Hate Alabama” man released his debut EP this week. This is the title tune, a thumper about a guy with a busted heart who can’t get away from an ex. That’s because they both live in town so small that “there’s only one bar, only one church.” Hence, “The one that got away didn’t go too far.” Give this man a full album at once.

JASON ALDEAN / “Trouble With a Heartbreak”
Writers: Kurt Allison/Brett Beavers/Tully Kennedy/John Morgan; Producer: Michael Knox; Label: Macon/Broken Bow
–The rock production is slathered in echo. The song just barely has a melody.

HAILEY WHITTERS / “Everything She Ain’t”
Writers: Hailey Whitters/Bryan Simpson/Ryan Tyndell; Producers: Hailey Whitters/Jake Gear; Label: Pigasus/Songs & Daughters/Big Loud
–Peppy and clever. He doesn’t know what he’s missing, so she’s spelling it out for him. Hailey went back to her Iowa high school to film the video, which is as cute as the song. The hand claps, the saucy delivery, the staccato fiddle and banjo notes, the pert tempo–everything works here.

LOGAN MIZE / “Follow Your Heart”
Writers: Logan Mize/Lynn Hutton; Producer: Daniel Agee; Label: Big Yellow Dog
–This country rocker has cool, deep-and-low drum pounding beneath his pleading vocal and some ethereal guitar chimes and organ sighing. The resulting toe tapper is as catchy as can be. Well worth your spins.

SYLVIA / “Every Time a Train Goes By”
Writers: Sylvia Hutton/John Mock/Thom Schuyler; Producers: John Mock/Sylvia; Label: Red Pony
–This is lilting and rootsy, featuring minor-key mandolin and lovely stacked harmonies by Sylvia’s multi-tracked voice. Brushed drumming propels the production. Airy, luminous and crystal clear. The track is drawn from her forthcoming Nature Child album, which drops on “Twos-Day.”

SEAFORTH & JORDAN DAVIS / “Good Beer”
Writers: Tom Jordan/Mitch Thompson/Rocky Block/Jordan Dozzi; Producer: Tom Jordan; Label: Arista
–The Aussie duo teams up with Davis on this charming, light-hearted ditty. In case you’re wondering, “A good beer is a cold one.” This sunny, bouncy outing will have you feeling like springtime, or at the very least will leave you with a big smile on yer face.

LOVE AND THEFT / “Accidentally on Purpose”
Writers: Eric Gunderson/Stephen Barker Liles/Bree Doster; Producer: none listed; Label: ONErpm
–Gunderson and Liles are back. They still sing beautifully, and they are still totally pop.

ANDREW FARRISS / “Drifting”
Writers: Marti Frederiksen/Andrew Farriss; Producer: Andrew Farriss; Label: BBR
–Farriss is a former member of the huge rock band INXS. This tempo tune occurs on his debut solo album, and it has an open-air, California-country vibe. It’s an attractive, gypsy/bohemian thing with wafting strings way off in the distance.

THE BRETHREN / “Chevelle”
Writers: Brian White/Casey Parnell/Chad Chapin/Corey Parnell/Lonnie Chapin; Producer: none listed; Label: DistroKid
–This act is two sets of brothers, the Parnells and the Chapins. All four have pop and/or CCM backgrounds, and that shows in their polished, creamy harmonies. This languid, smooth tune evokes nostalgia for an old teen romance. Think Poco or America from the ‘70s.

Shenandoah Hits The Road To Celebrate 35th Anniversary

Shenandoah is celebrating 35 years as a band with a brand new “35th Anniversary Tour,” kicking off Feb. 11 in Sulphur Springs, Texas.

The 35-date tour, with more shows to announced soon, includes stops in Fort Worth, Albuquerque, Corpus Christi, Ft. Myers, and more, with a Nashville date on March 24.

Attendees can expect the band’s classic tunes, such as “The Church on Cumberland Road,” “Sunday in the South,” “Two Dozen Roses,” “Next to You, Next to Me,” and many more.

“To believe we’d still be in the music business, as ever changing as it is, would only come to me in one form: the country music fan base,” says frontman Marty Raybon. “It’s a wonderful thing to experience while looking out over an audience where the age span is so wide. It is most humbling.”

He continues, “We have been blessed for the last 35 years with songs that have that spoken power to move people. So we say thank you to the Lord for His strength, the fans for their loyalty, the songwriters for great songs and the producers that helped them come to life. It’s made this 35 years a road trip I would have hated to miss.”
