Big Loud Records Adds H. Read Davis As Senior Director, Digital

Big Loud Records has added H. Read Davis as Senior Director of Digital, effective immediately. A Belmont University alum and Texas native, Davis joins Big Loud after previous stops at Spotify as Social Media Manager and Crowd Surf as Director of Creative Operations. He also interned at Chrysalis Music Group, Propel Music Group and Big Yellow Dog Music.
At Spotify, Davis collaborated on the multi-faceted launch of Spotify’s ’90s Country campaign, helped launch Spotify Hot Country’s annual Artists to Watch initiative, led social marketing campaigns around their most-viewed livestream at launch time with pop singer Lauv, and offered expertise on key album campaigns for artists including Adele, Thomas Rhett, Kacey Musgraves and more. At Crowd Surf, Davis helped orchestrate the social presence of Steven Tyler’s Janie‘s Fund charity, mapped out promotional strategy and on-site content capture for Seth Rogen‘s annual Hilarity for Charity event, and worked on social strategy, content, and release promotions for Cody Johnson, Black Eyed Peas, Matthew West, Chris Rock, and more.

Ben Goodvich, Chase Butler, Rob Harvell and Bruce Johnson-Castille, who collectively tally over 50 years of music industry experience, have launched Southern Signal Nashville, a company aimed at developing independent artists. Jason Cross marks the company’s flagship signee.
“Southern Signal is an opportunity for us to work with talented and hardworking independent artists that are just a few contacts and resources away from accomplishing their dreams,” the founders explain. “Cross is loved the second he enters a room or steps on a stage. We have not met anyone in Nashville that is more loved by the locals for not just his incredible talent as an artist but also for being a genuinely great person. IBMA Foundation Announces 2022 Grant Recipients For 2022 Arnold Schultz

The IBMA Foundation has awarded a total of $19,170 in Arnold Shultz Fund project grants to programs and individuals in Alaska, Arizona, California, China, Hawaii, Kenya, and North Carolina. Established in 2020, the Arnold Shultz Fund serves to encourage participation in bluegrass music by people of color.
“We’re proud to announce a significant increase in the amount of Shultz Fund grants in 2022, compared to the $12,050 we awarded last year,” says Dr. Richard Brown, co-chair of the Arnold Shultz Fund advisory committee along with Neil Rosenberg, Ph.D. “We hope to keep doing this for many years to come, and we’re pleased to include two international programs this year. The IBMA Foundation seeks to offer a proactive, helping hand to individuals who come from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups in the bluegrass community. Bluegrass music belongs to everyone. We are grateful to donors who continue to support the Arnold Shultz Fund and all the other Foundation initiatives, especially during the COVID pandemic. Their generosity has made it possible to award grants to these very deserving musicians and program organizers.”

New Country, Z100 (WOOZ-FM) in Southern Illinois (Marion-Carbondale) just wrapped a record-breaking year for their St. Jude Radiothon with a final total of $331,148.14.
This includes a record 4.8 million+ “pennies” and over $47,000 from auctions. This gives New Country, Z100 a cumulative 28-year total of $4,830,977 for the life-saving research at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The 30th Annual Tin Pan South Songwriters Festival came to a close this weekend after five days of songwriter rounds from over 400 talented songwriters.
On Friday (April 1), festival-goers were treated to performances from Bill Anderson, Buddy Cannon, Rodney Clawson, Tim Nichols, Bob DiPiero, JT Harding, Kelley Lovelace, Dan Wilson, Corey Crowder, RaeLynn, David Hodges, Alex Kline, Smith Ahnquist, and more at venues across Music City.
On Saturday (April 2), the festival closed with music from Natalie Hemby, Jeffrey Steele, Steve Dorff, Kelly Archer, Trent Harmon, Neil Medley, Nathan Chapman, Kevin Kadish, and more.
In addition to the rounds and networking events that took place this year during Tin Pan South, Nashville Songwriters Association International also hosted the first-ever in-person NSAI Member Awards, presented by Regions Bank. The invitation-only event was held at Analog at the Hutton Hotel in Nashville and included an array of performances.
“We have thousands of songwriter members who may not describe themselves as professional songwriters, but write amazing songs, are outstanding performers, and deserve recognition for their work,” said NSAI Executive Director Bart Herbison. “This is one of the most exciting additions to NSAI’s programming in years and we applaud Regions Bank for underwriting this event. Nothing could be more in line with the part of our mission statement that says: ‘to educate, elevate and celebrate the songwriter.'”

Shane McAnally Notches Second Week Atop MusicRow Top Songwriter Chart

Shane McAnally nabs his second consecutive week at the top of the MusicRow Top Songwriter Chart this week. He is a co-writer on five currently charting songs, including Old Dominion’s “No Hard Feelings,” Kenny Chesney’s “Everyone She Knows,” Walker Hayes’ “AA,” Sam Hunt’s “23,” and Carly Pearce & Ashley McBryde’s “Never Wanted To Be That Girl.”
Ashley Gorley, who is a co-writer on such songs as “New Truck” (Dylan Scott), “Sand In My Boots” (Morgan Wallen), “Beers On Me” (Dierks Bentley, Hardy & Breland), “Slow Down Summer” (Thomas Rhett), “Give Heaven Some Hell” (Hardy), “Take My Name” (Parmalee), and “You Didn’t” (Brett Young), takes the second spot.
Eric Church continues to show the power of a solo write as the only writer on his hit single, “Heart On Fire,” meaning all of the points earned from the song’s airplay, digital download track sales, and streams go entirely to him on the Songwriter Chart.
Michael Hardy (No. 4) and Ben Johnson (No. 5) fill out the remainder of the top five on the MusicRow Top Songwriter Chart.

Weekly Register: Maren Morris’ ‘Humble Quest’ Makes Top Country Album & Song Debut

Maren Morris made waves on the top country albums chart this week with her new project, Humble Quest. The album debuts at No. 2 this week on the country chart and No. 21 overall with 22K in total first-week consumption (11K album only/14 million song streams). Morris also earns the top country song debut this week as “Nervous” comes in at No. 37 with 3 million total streams.
Morgan Wallen continues his run at the top of the country albums chart with Dangerous: The Double Album adding 45K in total consumption (1.4K album only/54 million song streams). Luke Combs takes the third spot with What You See Is What You Get gaining 18K, as well as fifth as This One’s For You gains 16K in total consumption. Taylor Swift‘s Red (Taylor’s Version) fills out the top five, coming in at No. 4 with 17K in total consumption.
On the songs side, “Buy Dirt” (Jordan Davis & Luke Bryan) earn a fifth week at No. 1, earning another 6.3 million streams and contributing to a cumulative 226 million streams RTD. “‘Til You Can’t” (Cody Johnson) remains in second with 6 million streams. “AA” (Walker Hayes) and “Doin’ This” (Luke Combs) trade places this week with Hayes taking the third spot at 5.8 million streams and Combs narrowly falling to fourth. “Wasted On You” (Morgan Wallen) seals the top five, adding 5.7 million streams this week.
Nashville Well Represented At 64th Annual Grammy Awards

Musicians, songwriters and industry professionals of all genres came together in Las Vegas Sunday night (April 3) for the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, hosted by Trevor Noah.
Chris Stapleton was country music’s big winner of the evening. In addition to his wins in the pre-televised ceremony for Best Country Solo Performance for “You Should Probably Leave” and Best Country Song for “Cold,” he took home the only televised country award, Best Country Album, for Starting Over.
Stapleton spoke eloquently when he approached the mic to accept his award. He started his speech by mentioning that it was his twins’ fourth birthday. “I’m thinking a lot about sacrifices because I missed out on some of their birthday toady,” Stapleton said. “I know everybody in this room has made some kind of a sacrifice to be up here doing this. I don’t know what it is for everybody, but I know that it hurts sometimes. Hopefully we’re all doing it so that we make the world a better place and that the people who live in it will love each other, have a good time together, and come together.”

Producer Dave Cobb beamed onward, and thanked God and his family when he had his time to speak. Stapleton and Cobb later took the stage to perform his Grammy-winning song, “Cold.” As usual, Stapleton’s extraordinary skill left the Grammy audience on their feet.
Another powerful country performance came from Carrie Underwood, who took home a trophy for Best Roots Gospel Album for her hymns record My Savior. Underwood performed a rousing rendition of her new single, “Ghost Story.”
Both Stapleton and Underwood, along with other artists throughout the evening, were introduced by personnel from their touring crew—an homage to the pandemic’s havoc on the live music segment of the industry. Stapleton was introduced by his assistant tour manager and Underwood by her wardrobe supervisor.
Brothers Osborne closed the evening with a rocking “Dead Man’s Curve.” Before the televised ceremony, the duo won their first Grammy ever for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Younger Me.” In an emotional acceptance speech, TJ Osborne spoke about the magnitude of the win, given his sexuality in country music.
“For those of you who do not know, this song was written in response to me coming out,” TJ said. “I never thought that I would be able to do music professionally because of my sexuality. I certainly never thought I would be here on this stage accepting a Grammy after having done something I felt was going to be life-changing in potentially a very negative way.”
After thanking his wife, team and brother, John Osborne said, “This song is called ‘Younger Me,’ so I think if I want to thank somebody, I want to thank my younger self for pursuing this. We all have a younger self in us. Thank them because they got you here.”

Brandi Carlile gave a stunning performance of “Right On Time,” after being introduced by two legends, Joni Mitchell and Bonnie Raitt. First-time Grammy winners Maverick City Music became the first Christian artist to perform at the ceremony in over 20 years. Billy Strings also got some screen time when he played “Hide and Seek.”
Other standout performances of the evening included Jon Batiste, who was the most nominated artist of the night and who took home Album of the Year, as well as Olivia Rodrigo‘s rendition of “Driver’s License,” Billie Eilish‘s rocking performance of “Happier Than Ever,” a medley of hits from Lil Nas X, BTS’ performance of “Butter,” and H.E.R.’s rendition of “Damage,” alongside Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Lenny Kravitz and Travis Barker.
John Legend led a touching tribute to the violence in Ukraine, complete with a videotaped speech from Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Nashville music-makers and business people recognized in the In Memoriam segment of the show included Tom T. Hall, Connie Bradley, Stonewall Jackson, Don Everly, Bobbie Nelson, Nanci Griffith, Dallas Frazier, and more.

Lauren Alaina Parts Ways With UMG Nashville

Lauren Alaina is parting ways with her long-time label UMG Nashville, MusicRow has confirmed. In a social media message posted on Monday (April 4), Alaina wrote that she had come to the “tough decision to spread [her] wings and close a very important chapter of [her life.]”
Alaina signed with UMG imprint Mercury Nashville after she placed as the runner-up on the tenth season of American Idol in 2011. The singer-songwriter has gone on to become a multi-Platinum-selling artist, with three No. 1 singles including 2017’s “Road Less Traveled,” the now 6x Platinum “What Ifs” (2018) with Kane Brown, and “One Beer” (2020) with Hardy and Devin Dawson.
Alaina released her third album, Sitting Pretty On Top of the World, in September of 2021 and was welcomed as a Grand Ole Opry cast member in February.
In her social media post, Alaina thanked her Mercury team who took a chance on her, and let her fans know that “exciting things” were on the horizon for her career. It’s unclear if Alaina has plans to sign another recording contract or if she will remain independent.

Carrie Underwood, Mickey Guyton, More Added To CMT Awards Lineup
/by Lorie HollabaughThe CMT Music Awards has added Carrie Underwood, Mickey Guyton, Old Dominion, and the Black Pumas to the lineup of performers and unveiled the top six finalists vying for the Video of Year award.
Guyton and the Black Pumas will team up for a world premiere collaboration, while CMT’s most decorated artist of all-time Carrie Underwood will deliver a special, all-new performance from the Resorts World Theatre, home of her ongoing show “Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency.”
The final six Video of the Year nominees are “If I Didn’t Love You” (Jason Aldean & Carrie Underwood); “One Mississippi” (Kane Brown); “Half of My Hometown” (Kelsea Ballerini feat. Kenny Chesney); “Forever After All” (Luke Combs); “Til You Can’t” (Cody Johnson); and “Never Say Never” (Cole Swindell & Lainey Wilson).
Over the past three weeks, fans have cast their votes across all categories, including Video of the Year, narrowing down to the top six finalists. On April 11, the six will be narrowed down to the top three, with voting continuing through the live show leading up to the reveal at the end of the night.
Hosted by Ballerini and Anthony Mackie, country music’s only entirely fan-voted award show will broadcast live from Nashville on Monday, April 11 from 7-10 p.m. CT on CBS and Paramount+.
The Core Entertainment Signs Nickelback

The Core Entertainment, the management company founded by Kevin “Chief” Zaruk and Simon Tikhman, has signed multi-Platinum rock band Nickelback.
With a presence in Nashville, Los Angeles and Toronto, Nickelback joins a roster that includes Grammy-winning pop artist Emily Weisband, soulful country singer Nate Smith, genre-bending country duo After Midtown, alt pop band Valley, country singer-songwriter Bailey Zimmerman, and more.
The move reunites Zaruk with the band, after he began his career as Nickelback’s tour manager before helping start Big Loud in 2011.
“It really is a full circle moment and feels amazing,” Zaruk tells MusicRow. “We never stopped being friends and always stayed in touch, so it feels really natural to jump back into it. It was also exciting to bring into the fold my business partner Simon as well as the rest of our team at The Core.”
According to Zaruk, Nickelback has plans to get to work on a new album, tour and documentary.
“We are going to be releasing a lot of new stuff coming up this year setting us up for next year, so without giving too much away it’s going to be a lot of fun,” he says. “Plus we will keep expanding and working global territories and playing places they have never been.”

Sony Music Nashville has announced the appointment of Chris Schuler to Vice President, Promotion, Arista Nashville.
Reporting directly to Executive Vice President of Promotion and Artist Development, Steve Hodges, and effective immediately, Schuler is responsible for the development, implementation and supervision of the strategic and tactical radio promotional plans for artists on the Arista Nashville roster.
“Chris is an absolute rising start in the industry! His business acumen, people skills, and passion for the music are second to none. I’m elated to bring him onboard and very excited about the future of Arista Nashville with him leading that team,” says Hodges.
Schuler shares, “I could not be more excited about joining the Arista Nashville promotion team and being a part of Sony Music Nashville’s ongoing legacy. Alongside Steve and the entire label group, I look forward to breaking new music, new artists and evolving careers.”
Since April 2019, Schuler has held the position of VP, Promotion & Radio Marketing at Universal Music Group Nashville. First joining UMG Nashville seven years ago as Mercury Promotion Coordinator, he became Director, Promotion & Radio Marketing for the label group in 2016. From 2011 to 2012, Schuler worked at BMI in Nashville.
Originally from Florence, Kentucky, Schuler is a Middle Tennessee State University graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree with an emphasis on production and technology in the Recording Industry Management program.

Dierks Bentley’s Seven Peaks Music Festival Slated For Labor Day Weekend

The Live Nation festival will once again take place over Labor Day Weekend, Sept. 2-4. More information, including lineup and ticket details, will be revealed on April 13.
“I can’t overstate how much it means to be able to say that Seven Peaks is officially coming back,” shares Bentley. “We found the perfect new location for the festival in Villa Grove. Everyone knows how much I love Colorado and how important it was for me to find a home for this one of a kind event that encompasses all the magic of the beauty of the state.
