Thompson Square Returns After Five-Year Hiatus With ‘Masterpiece’

Thompson Square are back with their first new album in more than five years, MASTERPIECE, which is set for release June 1. The duo worked with producers Nathan Chapman and Dann Huff on the new project, but also self-produced a few of the independent CD’s 11 new tracks which feature touches of R&B, reggae and hard rock influences.

“This album is called MASTERPIECE, and the definition of a masterpiece is an artist’s life’s work,” Keifer says. “When we’re 80 years old and we look back, we want to be able to say we’re really proud of all the stuff we did.”

Five songs from the album, “Masterpiece,” “A Love Like This,” “Millionaires,” “Up In Smoke” and “Let’s Do Something Stupid,” are available now for fans, and the full length album is available for pre-order here.

The duo will return to the road later this year for a slate of acoustic and full-band shows which will be announced soon.

Ty Herndon, Cody Alan To Host 2018 Concert For Love And Acceptance

GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, announced the 2018 Concert for Love and Acceptance set for June 7 at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville. The show, taking place the night after the 2018 CMT Music Awards, will feature a coalition of artists and celebrities appearing and performing to accelerate acceptance for the LGBTQ community. Ty Herndon and CMT’s Cody Alan will host, and the event will feature performances by Herndon, as well as Terri Clark, Cassadee Pope, Michael Ray, Calum Scott, Brandon Stansell, and more. CMT will return as the event’s media sponsor and will amplify the event and line-up across its radio and social platforms. Additional support for the event is provided by Nissan.

“We’re proud to once again lock arms with our friends at GLAAD to lend our voice and support to an event that champions love and acceptance through the power of music,” said Frank Tanki, General Manager of CMT and TV Land.

The inaugural Concert for Love and Acceptance was held in 2015 to kick off GLAAD’s Southern Stories Tour and the second iteration was held in 2017. The event has been supported by artists like Reba McEntire, with a lineup of performances has included Chris Carmack, Crystal Gayle, Billy Gilman, Dana Goldberg, Kree Harrison, Mickey Guyton, Levi Hummon, Runaway June, Ryan Kinder, Meghan Lindsey, Street Corner Symphony, Thompson Square, and Trent Harmon. GLAAD’s Southern Stories initiative tells the stories of LGBTQ people and their allies in the South to create a cultural shift towards LGBTQ acceptance and understanding in the region.

Warner Music Group Acquires A&R Tool Sodatone

Warner Music Group has acquired Sodatone, a tech start-up for an A&R insight tool founded in 2016. Sodatone’s proprietary technology combines streaming, social and touring data with machine learning. The platform identifies unsigned talent by tracking early predictors of success, such as the loyalty and engagement of a growing fan-base, and the potential virality of a track or demo. In addition, Sodatone provides insight into audience reaction to releases from established artists and songwriters. The service is particularly versatile in providing global and regional views, enabling A&R users to focus on specific territories as well as global reach.

The company will continue to be run by its founders, Arjun Bali and Jerry Zhang, two innovators with a background in data science, artificial intelligence and engineering. Reporting to Vinnie Freda, WMG’s Chief Data Officer, the duo will collaborate closely with A&R executives across WMG’s recorded music and music publishing operations.

iHeartCountry Festival Announces Daytime Village Lineup

Luke Combs, Brett Young, Lauren Alaina, Dylan Scott and Danielle Bradbery will perform at the iHeartCountry Festival at the Daytime Village on May 5 at Frank Erwin Center’s North Box Office Plaza in Austin.

The free daytime event will also feature fan zones and interactive experiences by iHeartRadio’s brand partners.

The Festival’s main stage event hosted by Bobby Bones will feature performances from Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Dustin Lynch, Cole Swindell, Maren Morris, Sugarland, Luke Combs, Billy Currington, Dan + Shay, Jon Pardi and Brett Young, with more set to be announced.

iHeartMedia will broadcast the event live nationwide across its country stations. A limited number of tickets for behind the stage seats are available beginning today for $20 (plus tax and fees) at texasboxoffice.com. The festival is donating $1 for every ticket sold to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to help fund lifesaving treatments and research.

Point Of Grace To Release First Full-Length Hymns Album

CCM group Point of Grace will return April 3 with a new collection, Beautiful Name. The album marks the trio’s first full-length recording of hymns and worship songs, with Point of Grace’s signature harmonies atop 10 fresh arrangements of beloved favorites.

Produced and arranged by Kent Hooper and Phillip Keveren, Beautiful Name features cherished hymns “All Creatures of Our God and King,” “Holy, Holy, Holy” and “Blessed Assurance,” among others, alongside such worship classics as the Twila Paris-penned “How Beautiful”; Hillsong Worship’s anthemic “Cornerstone”; and renowned modern hymn “In Christ Alone (My Hope Is Found),” by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend.

“We have always known at some point in our career we would record a hymns and worship project,” said Point of Grace’s Shelley Breen. “After being together for 25 years, this seemed like the perfect time. So much of our ministry is based on the foundation we received growing up in the Church and singing these hymns that are so theologically rich and full of verity.”

Point of Grace has sold more than 8 million units; garnered two platinum records; three Grammy nominations, as well as 27 No. 1 singles and numerous Dove Awards. Comprised of Shelley Breen, Denise Jones and Leigh Cappillino, the group founded the Girls of Grace conference and have authored multiple books. The Academy of Country Music welcomed Capitol Nashville recording artist and 2017 New Male ACM Vocalist Jon Pardi to the office. While at the Academy, Pardi performed acoustic renditions of several songs from his Gold-certified, ACM Album of the Year nominated album, California Sunrise.

 

Cassadee Pope Returns To The Voice

For the first time ever, The Voice coaches Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton have recruited those who know best how to navigate and win the competition to advise their artists – former Voice champions. Winners Cassadee Pope, Jordan Smith, Chris Blue and Chloe Kohanski will serve as advisers for the coaches during the Knockout Rounds on NBC’s The Voice, beginning Monday, April 2 (8-10 p.m. ET/PT).

 

Rodney Atkins Celebrates New Single Release

Curb artist Rodney Atkins‘ new single “Caught Up In The Country” features vocals from the Fisk Jubilee Singers. The track is the first from Atkins’ upcoming fifth studio album.

“Listening to the Fisk Jubilee Singers with their hand clapping and foot stomping music is really a spiritual experience,” says Atkins. “When I heard ‘Caught Up In The Country’ I just felt like the two things had to come together. It doesn’t sound like anything I’ve recorded or released before and that also excites me.”

At a listening event previewing his new music on March 21, Atkins was honored with a plaque celebrating his nine career Gold, Platinum and Multi-Platinum RIAA certifications to date. In addition to his sales success, which includes over 13 million units sold, Atkins has also amassed six No. 1 hits.

Deluge Music, Gravity Gone Music Sign Jason Saenz

Deluge Music and Gravity Gone Music have signed a worldwide publishing deal with songwriter Jason Saenz.

“Jason is going to be a huge asset and we welcome him to the Deluge Music team!” says Deluge president Mark Friedman.

Gravity Gone Music’s Stephanie Greene adds, “I’m really excited about this new adventure with Deluge! I’ve been working with Jason for eight years and I’ve watched him grow into a writer that can step into any room, whether it be country, pop, urban, or indie…and he’ll deliver and it’s always a really great song.”

Jason has had cuts with Gavin DeGraw, Little Big Town, Lee Ann Womack, Kassi Ashton, Drake White, and Scotty McCreery, among others.

Rising Women on the Row has taken its place as one of the essential dates on the Nashville music biz’s social calendar.

The seventh annual such breakfast, staged by MusicRow magazine, drew a record-setting 540 attendees. The throng was there to applaud this year’s slate of honorees, Faithe Dillman, Leslie DiPiero, Becky Gardenhire, Lynn Oliver-Cline, Annie Ortmeier and Janet Weir.

This year’s event took place at the Omni hotel downtown on Tuesday (March 27). Each of the women who were recognized offered words of encouragement to their sisters in the industry.

“Honor the women who came before you; respect the women you work with now; mentor the women coming up behind you,” said DiPiero. She is the GM of FGL’s Tree Vibez Music.

“In honor of Women’s History Month, I want to thank every woman who came before me,” she added. “Of the people here today, even if you don’t like me, I love you. This community and its songwriters literally saved my life.” She moved to Music City 23 years ago following the cancer death of her mentor mother. Among her lessons: “Laughter is the sound of fear leaving.”

“This is extremely overwhelming,” said Gardenhire. “I think I’ve been to every one of these. If you’re here, you’re supporting women. And that’s hugely important.” She is a partner at WME.

“I’d like to thank the community of women I get to work with every day,” said Weir. “For me, personally, it’s a really big deal to be recognized in Nashville. I fell in love with this community and always, always wanted to be here.” Vancouver native Weir manages Maren Morris and Ryan Hurd as president of 42 Entertainment and via Red Light.

“Oh wow: I’m blown away by the support,” said Oliver-Cline, who founded River House Artists and manages Luke Combs. “It’s been a 24-year journey, but here we are.”

“I am extremely humbled to be honored among friends,” said Dillman, the founder and CEO of Marbaloo Marketing. “This is the closest thing to a college graduation I’m going to get.”

“Thank you all for being here,” said Ortmeier to the packed ballroom. “Thank you MusicRow magazine for this incredible event.” She is the VP of digital marketing at UMG.

“The women here this morning haven’t had it easy,” commented host Sherod Robertson. “They’ve had to work hard to make their contributions to the Nashville music industry.”

He moderated a panel discussion that featured four prominent music biz women. Artist manager Tracy Gershon co-founded Change the Conversation to bring gender disparity to the forefront on Music Row. Mary Hilliard Harrington of Red Light manages Dierks Bentley, LANCO, Aubrie Sellers and Tucker Beathard and founded The GreenRoom publicity agency. Rose Palermo is one of the most prominent attorneys on Music Row. Ann Powers is a distinguished music critic, author and NPR correspondent. Each offered words of empowerment.

“You just have to work hard, work harder, work hardest,” said Gershon. “Do not take no for an answer. Keep your eye on the ball. Support each other. Pay it forward.”

“Share each others’ experiences,” said Powers. “I am recognizing the legacy of the women who came before me and helping the women who come after….We have to champion our elders as well as our younger generation.

“We’re in a moment of reckoning. The MeToo and TimesUp movements have brought a shift in attitudes and a demand for accountability. What I’m seeing among young people is an expectation of diversity.”

“Work your ass off and have a thick skin,” offered Hilliard Harrington. “Surround yourself with awesome people. It’s such a great time for women.”

Palermo suggested, “Have a great sense of humor. Don’t b.s. people. Be straightforward. Be sincere. Be confident. Be nice to everyone, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

This event also always features superb music. This year’s female artist in the Rising Women on the Row spotlight was singer-songwriter Abby Anderson. She peppered the crowd with her spitfire rocker “Naked Truth,” then stunned everyone with her ballad “Make Him Wait,” which will become her debut single this spring.

“I’m a big fan of all the women who are honored here today,” said the personality-packed Anderson. She earned a standing ovation for her too-brief set.

One new addition this year was a “tribute” video starring industry leaders offering congratulations. Todd Cassetty was instrumental in creating this.

As usual, the Omni breakfast was excellent – scrambled eggs, fried potatoes & onions, link sausage, bacon, melon and berries. New this year was the offering of biscuits, to the delight of many.

LeAnn Phelan, B.J. Hill, Ben Vaughn, Debbie Linn, Justin Levinson, Diane Pearson, Doug Johnson, Becky Harris, Bob DiPiero, Cameo Carlson and Victoria Shaw were spotted schmoozing.

Also on the rsvp list were such fabulons as Liz Motley, Woody Bomar, Debbie Zavitson, Aileen Crowley, Karen Conrad, Rachel Fontenot, Pam Matthews, Edie Emery, Tom Lord, Martha Ivester and Tammy Hyler.
