Charlie Cook On Air: Merry Christmas

Can you believe that it is Christmas next week? Well of course you can, there are decorations all over the place, you’ve spent more time at the mall or on-line shopping and you’re winding down for the year.

I hope that you’re ready. I hope that you have wrapped up your shopping. Though I suspect with a three-day weekend going into Christmas on Tuesday you may have procrastinated like I have.

Because I am not done with my shopping I thought that I would make a list. I am not going to speak for all of Nashville, just for myself, with an eye to what some people might be hoping for under the tree.

  1. More primary color CDs. Red was a huge seller. How about Blue and Green. And then in 2014 Cyan, Magenta and Yellow.
  2. Two more record company jobs. There appears to be one more person than jobs. This is the living and breathing musical chairs but with two more jobs there would always be one open.
  3. A solution to the performance rights battle. Maybe we put Bob Pittman and Kenny Chesney in a room and whoever comes out wins.
  4. A new chart system where nothing is older than 2 weeks. That way it is always fresh and an artist can chart each cut on their CD in 6 months.
  5. Reduced airfares between Nashville and Atlanta.
  6. To even the ratings landscape in multiple country station markets, the leading station must play “Achy Breaky Heart” at least once per shift.
  7. The very talented Trace Adkins has his sentence commuted so that he doesn’t have to host the ACAs next year.
  8. More TV shows like Nashville. Maybe Branson. The same topics but with more of an accent. And an older cast for CBS TV.
  9. More instances where the Grammys reach out to Nashville. Like awarding a country song the Grammy in the Country category.
  10. Fifty-three number ones next year. We’ll work out the details.

Merry Christmas. May you get what you wish for.

Nielsen To Acquire Arbitron

Nielsen today (Dec. 18) announced an agreement to acquire Arbitron Inc. for $1.26 billion. The deal is subject to regulatory approval.

Nielsen is home to SoundScan, which tabulates album and digital track purchases. The company’s BDS division measures radio airplay. This data is used to determine radio and sales charts published in Billboard. Nielsen also measures television ratings, consumer spending, demographics and much more.

Arbitron calculates local radio station ratings, network and national radio audience measurement, and much more.

Nielsen has agreed to acquire all of the outstanding common stock of Arbitron for $48 per share in cash, representing a premium of approximately 26 percent to Arbitron’s closing price on December 17, 2012.

“U.S. consumers spend almost 2 hours a day with radio. It is and will continue to be a vibrant and important advertising medium,” said Nielsen Chief Executive Officer David Calhoun. “Arbitron will help Nielsen better solve for unmeasured areas of media consumption, including streaming audio and out-of-home. The high level of engagement with radio and TV among rapidly growing multicultural audiences makes this central to Nielsen’s priorities.”

With Arbitron assets, Nielsen intends to further expand its “Watch” segment’s audience measurement across screens and forms of listening. “These integrated, innovative capabilities will enable broader measurement of consumer media behavior in more markets around the world,” said Steve Hasker, Nielsen President of Global Media Products and Advertiser Solutions. “We will also bring local clients greater visibility to empower more precise advertising placement and campaign effectiveness.”

“Radio reaches more than 92 percent of all American teens and adults because they love to listen to music, talk, news and information while at home, at work and in their cars,” said William T. Kerr, President and Chief Executive Officer of Arbitron. “By combining Nielsen’s global capabilities and scale with Arbitron’s unique radio measurement and listening information, advertisers and media clients will have better insights into consumer behavior and the return on marketing investments.”

Earlier this month it was announced that Kerr will retire and Sean R. Creamer will take over as Pres./CEO of Arbitron effective Jan. 1.

MusicRow No. 1 Song

Zac Brown Band’s “Goodbye In Her Eyes,” the second single from its October 2012 Uncaged release, takes this week’s No. 1 slot for our MusicRow chart.

Written by Zac Brown, Wyatt Durrette, John Hopkins, and Sonia Lee the Southern Ground/Atlantic single comes complete with musical styling that have given the band its signature, including a quick guitar strum, falsetto lacing and harmonious hooks.

Nothing seems to slow these guys down at radio, especially now with their own newly established Southern Ground promotion house on Music Row to work their own music. We’ll likely be seeing more and more success from these Georgia boys.

Charlie Cook On Air: Clear Channel Cutbacks

I do not want to come off as someone trying to defend cutting jobs in the broadcast business. I have spent my entire career in radio and have never had a job outside of the business. All of my friends are in the radio/music business.

That said, I cannot fault Clear Channel for making cuts this month. I agree the timing was poor, coming between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but there’s no good time to be let go from your job. What if they had waited until January 3rd after you over spent on Christmas gifts? When you get laid off, fired, cut back, whatever you call it, checking the calendar is not the first thing they do. Beyond the fiscal year being the driver of these firings, I am not even sure the bean counters think about the holidays being around the corner. They never take their faces out of spreadsheets long enough to realize the impact.  The timing is crummy considering the bosses are in the budgeting process in October but credit themselves with holding off on the cuts as long as they can.

All that said, companies are allowed to conduct their businesses as they see fit. Last week I wrote about streaming music and the inability to show a profit for almost anyone in the space. Broadcast companies are not doing a lot better. It might be because of an unrealistic debt burden, albeit one brought on by trying to bite off more than they can chew. It certainly is about the economic problems that America has been mired in for years. No one is willing to stick their neck out and make a financial commitment to advertising because many companies are not sure that they can grow their business in this environment. When automobile advertising went south years ago, the fate of the guys who lost their jobs last week was set.

I know the popular thinking is the guys at the top of the pyramid are raking in millions while the worker bees are stung. I don’t know the hierarchy of Clear Channel; however, I do know a lot of smaller broadcasters where this is not the case. Everyone shares the pain. Perhaps not to the extent of firings every month, but if someone does leave they are not replaced and that impacts those left standing. Agreed, I would rather be one of those guys.

I have a few friends that are now looking for work after last week. I am sad for them. I have been there. You’re first hit with a feeling of, “Could I have done something differently?” This is followed by, “It’s not my fault. They are dumb,” and then, “Am I prepared to uproot my entire life?” Those of us not directly touched by these layoffs have a responsibility to our friends who have been let go. You don’t have to make up the spare room, but be sure you reach out to them and let them know you’re thinking about them and keeping an ear out for something they would be suited for.
