First No. 1s are always the best. Yesterday (Jan. 29) the industry congregated at CMA to cheer the charttopping success of “Cruise,” co-written by Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, with Jesse Rice, Chase Rice and Joey Moi. It was the first No. 1 for Republic Nashville duo FGL as well as writers Jesse Rice and Chase Rice (no relation). Moi’s track record includes a string of hits producing and writing with Jake Owen and Nickelback.
Florida Georgia Line’s solid work ethic, positive go-getter attitude and devotion to fans was the theme running through the celebration. Handling the honors for BMI, David Preston congratulated the duo, saying, “You came to town to leave a mark, and guys, you did it.”
Republic Nashville Pres. Jimmy Harnen shared his memory of meeting Kelley and Hubbard for the first time, where he noticed their tireless dedication to fans and that “they are not only great musicians, but great people.”
Seth England, who handles management duties for FGL at Big Loud Mountain, was instantly impressed with the band’s touring and talent when he met them a few years ago. He introduced them to Big Loud Mountain’s Craig Wiseman, who jumped on board immediately. “They had a fearless attitude and they wouldn’t take no for an answer,” said England. Big Loud Mountain presented the songwriters and FGL team members with Cruise license plates.
FGL producer/cowriter Moi added, “Keeping up with a [big hit] song like this is a daunting task,” and Hubbard and Kelley met the challenge every step of the way.
SESAC’s Tim Fink noted the odds against songs finding success, and congratulated the duo on beating those odds. In 2012 there were 32 No. 1 songs on MusicRow’s Country Breakout chart, with Florida Georgia Line being only one of two new acts with a chart-topper. The duo was the only newcomer who spent multiple weeks at the pinnacle. The track found early success on the MusicRow chart, where it peaked at No. 1 in November, which helped lay the groundwork for its rise up the mainstream charts.
In addition to receiving their own honors, Kelley and Hubbard presented plaques to their family members who were in attendance. Hubbard choked up a little as he remembered the band’s early days, where he and Kelley prayed before their shows at Hotel Indigo. It worked, “God blessed us like crazy,” he assured. Kelley fondly recalled early career meetings with BMI’s Mark Mason, who told the young songwriter he was the “light beer of country music,” and guided him to finding his “dark beer” writing side.
Co-writer Chase Rice, who grew up with Kelley in Florida, offered a long list of thank yous. Jesse Rice, who dreamed of being a songwriter since a childhood trip to the Bluebird Cafe, added, “If I had a script to write, this would be how it went.”
Sam Brooker, Jesse Rice’s publisher at Artist Revolution, presented the rising songwriter with a new Gibson guitar. Brooker shared how Jesse Rice’s relationship with Kelley and Hubbard was founded on a love of music, ever since they met in the parking lot of their apartment complex where the duo was playing guitars on a truck tailgate.
Also on hand to bestow congratulations were Avenue Bank’s Ron Cox, CMA’s Brandi Simms, CRS’s Bradford Hollingsworth, and Country Aircheck’s Chuck Aly, who toasted the “No. 1 that isn’t afraid to break the rules of grammar.”

sgaZac Brown’s Southern Ground Artists has promoted both Mara Sidweber and Chuck Swaney to Vice President of Radio Promotion.
Sidweber has been with ZBB for over four years, while Swaney recently hit the two-year mark after returning to the team in July 2012. As VPs, the two will jointly handle all relationships with national radio corporations and consultants, while also maintaining internal operations, and their respective regional duties, West Coast/Southwest and Midwest/Southwest.
“Our goal is to exceed people’s expectations with service and hospitality, and now that we have our ‘A’ team of passionate people in place, I couldn’t be more proud,” said Zac Brown. “They work hard for us every single day, and we’re so happy they’re part of the Southern Ground family.”
Sidweber, who is based in Dallas, previously worked at Capitol Records helping to launch the country radio careers of Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Lady Antebellum, and Darius Rucker. Swaney, based in Nashville, has over 30 years experience in the industry, working at Capitol, Mercury, Sony, and most recently EMI Nashville, promoting a wide range of artists, including Bob Seger, Bonnie Raitt, and Eric Church.
The SGA in-house radio team, also includes radio promotions executives Neda Tobin (Southeast), Paul Williams (Northeast), and Clay Henderson (Director of Syndication and Special Projects).
Zac Brown Band’s recent hit “Goodbye In Her Eyes” marks the band’s 10th country radio charttopper.

Underwood, Aerosmith Duet Released To Radio

Carrie Underwood
Rock band Aerosmith released “Can’t Stop Lovin’ You,” a duet with Carrie Underwood, to radio stations on Jan. 21.
During a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler described the record, saying, “I sang it a little country & western…and all along we thought, should we get someone in…It was last-minute.  She [Carrie] was in town doing something. I called her up and she said, ‘I’m leaving tomorrow.’ And I said, ‘Can you come over tonight?’ I called Joe [Perry] up, and the rest is history. She just did it. It really does work.”
Underwood and Tyler first paired for a duet of Underwood’s “Undo It” and Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” at the 46th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards in 2011. They later teamed up for an episode of CMT Crossroads in early 2012.

Carrie Underwood also released the video for her latest single, “Two Black Cadillacs.” The edgy, dark clip about two women who plot revenge against a cheating husband gets an eerie treatment at the end.

Romeo To Receive CRS President's Award

bob

Bob Romeo

Academy of Country Music CEO Bob Romeo will be honored with the 2013 CRS President’s Award. The presentation will take place during the Country Radio Hall of Fame Dinner and Awards on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. CT in the Nashville Convention Center Ballroom.

The President’s Award is presented to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the marketing, production, growth and development of the Country Radio Seminar and the multiple services that Country Radio Broadcasters provides to the Country radio and music communities.

Romeo’s 30 year career began in talent buying and concert promotion. He owns and operates Romeo Entertainment Group, an award-winning full-service talent buying agency that has worked with many country music superstars including Kenny Chesney. His accolades include two ACM Awards for Talent Buyer/Promoter of the Year and the CMA Talent Buyer/SRO Award. He has served as CEO for the Academy of Country Music for nearly 10 years, where his television producing credits include the Academy of Country Music Awards, and numerous ACM television concert specials.

“Bob Romeo truly represents the spirit of the President’s Award,” said CRS President Mike Culotta. “As well as having a great deal of passion for the music, he has proven himself to be a great friend to Country radio in general and the Country Radio Seminar in particular. It’s an honor to announce him as our 2013 President’s Award recipient.”

As previously announced, the 2013 Country Radio Hall of Fame inductees are Gaylon Christie in the Radio category, and Dr. Don Carpenter, Crook & Chase, Eddie Edwards and Bill “Dex” Poindexter in the On-Air category.

The Country Radio Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony unofficially kicks off Country Radio Seminar each year. CRS 2013 will be held Feb. 27-March 1, 2013. For information about Hall of Fame Tickets, contact the CRS offices at 615-327-4487.

Jason Aldean plays Madison Square Garden on March 2.

Further proof of the genre’s growing popularity in the Big Apple is Friday’s news (Jan. 18) of Jason Aldean selling out famed Manhattan venue Madison Square Garden. According to his team, all available tickets were purchased in ten minutes for his first-ever concert at the arena. His 2013 Night Train Tour, which hits NYC on March 2, will feature Jake Owen and Thomas Rhett.
“I think people underestimate country music’s popularity in New York City,” said Aldean. “The Garden is one of those places every artist dreams of playing. I am blown away that my show sold out that quickly…it makes me even more excited to hit rehearsals this month and get the Night Train tour on the road. I can’t wait to see you, New York!”
Aldean is the latest country star to experience touring success in New York. In August 2012, Live Nation’s Brian O’Connell told the New York Daily News, “We’re seeing more headlining tours in the New York area going into 2013 than we have in history. It’s double what it was three or four years ago.” That article reported that New York is the single biggest market for country music sales, according to Nielsen Soundscan.
Numerous factors have contributed country’s rise in popularity in the last several years, including genre-crossing superstars Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and Lady Antebellum; and country music on television shows such as American Idol and The Voice. The CMA has been working to boost country’s presence in New York City for years, particularly since 2005 when the CMA Awards moved to Madison Square Garden for one year.

MusicRow No. 1 Song

tbpSome of country music’s latest singles have taken to the dark side. The Band Perry continues this trend with their current No. 1, “Better Dig Two.”
The sibling trio tops this week’s MusicRow Chart with a seemingly not-so-innocent song about death, telling the gravedigger “he better dig two.” Although lyrical ambiguity may leave the listener to draw independent conclusions, the dramatic production makes a strong case towards persuading a belief about vengeful underpinnings.
Written by Trevor Rosen, Shane McAnally and Brandy Clark, the nine-week Republic Nashville single precedes a yet-to-be-titled sophomore album from the band, expected April 2.
In November, MusicRow’s Robert K. Oermann looked positively upon the track, in his DISClaimer single review. “Very cool,” noted Oermann. “The crisp little banjo licks, thumpy percussion and sonic crashes give it a super dramatic sound. The dark, threatening lyric and the energetic vocals are pluses as well. Innovative and ear catching.”

If this bold single gives us any indication of the direction that the Perry siblings will take with this forthcoming April release, we continue to have great expectations. Catch a glimpse of the song’s visual interpretation with the official music video directed by Declan Whitebloom, below.
