Marco Promotions has launched Marco Tertiary, a new service that promotes singles to top tertiary radio stations across the United States. The service will focus on “music forward” stations in non-reporting markets.
“These stations are chosen for their proximity to larger markets, their musical aggressiveness and their potential to become reporting stations to one of the major charts in the future,” says Marco Productions VP Rick Kelly. “As digital sales become the norm across all genres, this direct impact on listeners becomes more and more valuable.”
The company currently services 75 tertiary radio stations, with plans to increase to 100 stations in 2013. The company continues to market and promote radio singles at the secondary level.
The organization has added MTSU alumnus James Freeman to handle day-to-day responsibilities of the tertiary service. Freeman will report to Kelly and to Marco radio manager Sarah Matlock.

MusicRow No. 1 Song

Little Big Town

Little Big Town

Little Big Town worked up enough spins this week with “Tornado” to land at No. 1 on our MusicRow Chart. This, the quartet’s title track and second single from its fifth studio album, was written by Natalie Hemby and Delta Maid.
We have been looking forward to the record-breaking possibilities of Capitol Nashville’s Tornado since its release a few months ago, and the quartet has sure delivered now with two chart-topping singles from the project. This dark and stormy tune comes on the heels of “Pontoon,” which held our No. 1 position for five consecutive weeks in August 2012.
Little Big Town has since performed “Tornado” on FOX’s ACA Awards last month and has since made a stop at the network’s X Factor and New Years Eve Live!
Watch the official music video for “Tornado” and visit this week’s MusicRow chart below.

Grand Ole Opry To Make Debut At CRS 2013

crsCountry Radio Seminar has announced that a performance of country music’s most famous show, the Grand Ole Opry, will kick-off CRS 2013 on Wednesday, Feb. 27. The event will be held inside the Performance Hall at the Nashville Convention Center.
Artists confirmed to perform are Grand Ole Opry members Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker and Vince Gill along with Dustin Lynch and Scotty McCreery. Additional performers will be released in the coming weeks. The two-hour event will commence at 7 p.m., immediately following the annual CRS Artist/Attendee Welcome Reception. It has been a long time coming, but will be well worth the wait. My thanks to Pete Fisher and the Opry staff for allowing me to present this show on the opening night of CRS 2013, as both events are such a great fit for each other.”

Charlie Cook On Air: Music Row Predictions

CCook-onair-sm111This being my first column for 2013 I was tempted to submit some predictions for the year. Before doing that I thought it wise to look back at the predictions I (and others) made during this time last year.
I predicted 20 stations would flip to country music in 2012. After CBS flipped to Country Radio late in 2011, I thought it would lead a rush to the format. I fell short by at least half. I thought there would be more top 100 market stations coming aboard last year. Not so. However, I am not going to back off thinking 2013 will see more stations coming into the fold. The music is just too good right now. It seems like more stations flipped to CHR. Top 40 music is as good as it’s been in years.
I predicted Miranda Lambert would continue to set the pace in 2012. That was pretty easy to predict, and she got even more influential in the last 12 months. I saw Carrie and Taylor kicking butt in 2012 and both had record breaking years.
I told you to watch for Brantley Gilbert, Luke Bryan, Easton Corbin and Jana Kramer in 2012. In 2013, I predict Thomas Rhett and Greg Bates are going to have breakout years.
I thought Ronnie Dunn would have a number one record in 2012. I missed that one. He has too much talent to be off the chart for so long. Kix is continuing to show strength and with him being on the radio as a host for about 40 hours a week, he should have a great 2013.
Last January I said, “The top 5 Country Radio performers for 2012 will be (in no particular order) Zac Brown Band, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney and Miranda Lambert.”  The top five were Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Jason Aldean, ZBB and Kenny Chesney. In 2013, I think Miranda will find her way into the top 5.
I predicted some major changes in the record company landscape but that was already in play in 2011, so not much danger of being wrong on that one. There were more changes than I originally thought, but things look settled today. We’ll look at it again next January.
Tim McGraw was in two of my predictions. I saw him and Kenny setting the summer on fire with their tour. I believe I mentioned this before the tour was officially announced.  And before signing with his new label, I predicted Tim would be back big time on the radio. That was an easy prediction because he has been “big time on the radio” for 20 years now.
In 2013, I think Kenny is going to lead the way again on the No Shoes Nation tour with Eric Church as his support act. I have mentioned in this space that Eric’s show was the best one I saw in 2012 and he has the ability to hold an audience for 90 minutes.
I talked up HD radio one year ago. We did not see the kind of growth that I thought we would see in 2012 so I am going to stay with this prediction. Sooner or later both radio and the consumer are going to discover this is a treasure for the industry. Maybe there can be a partnership between the record industry and radio to program HD channels. Everyone can win, including the listener.
Regardless of the outcome from my 2012 predictions, I did better than the Mayans.

Rewind: 2012 MusicRow Chart No.1s

Little Big Town

For 10 years, The MusicRow Chart has anointed weekly No. 1 songs in the country radio marketplace and in 2012, thirty-three different songs climbed to the top position. Congratulations to all the artists, songwriters and labels for these 2012 radio achievements.

Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley

Noteworthy accomplishments were made by both Dierks Bentley and Luke Bryan who tied for bringing three titles to the No. 1 position in 2012, more than any other artist this year. The longest reigning No. 1 song this year was Little Big Town’s “Pontoon,” which remained atop the MusicRow chart for 5 consecutive weeks– the entire month of August.

The 11th Annual MusicRow Chart Awards, based on radio airplay reported by members of MusicRow‘s CountryBreakout radio panel, will be held during CRS in February.
