Alan Jackson Teams With Capitol's EMI Records Nashville

Alan Jackson is teaming with Capitol Records Nashville to release his next album. The superstar is heading into the studio soon and his new music will be released as a joint venture between ACR (Alan’s Country Records) and Capitol/EMI Records Nashville.
Jackson, who built his 60-million album selling career at former home Arista Records, has had a long standing relationship with Capitol Records Nashville President and CEO Mike Dungan.
In 2010 Capitol Records Nashville announced its newest imprint EMI Records Nashville, which is designed to be a sister label to Capitol Nashville.
ACR (Alan’s Country Records) was formed by Jackson when he released his 2002 Let It Be Christmas album, followed by the platinum-selling Precious Memories in 2005.

Alan Jackson and Mike Dungan—the early years.

“Mike Dungan and I go way back. He was right there during my early days at Arista, and it’s going to be great to work with him and his team there at Capitol,” Jackson says. “I’m happy to be joining the hottest label in Nashville.”
“Everyone here at Capitol/EMI is beyond thrilled to represent Alan Jackson,” responds Dungan. “A true American original, a future Hall of Famer, and an artist whose work to date is not only commercially successful, but is of historical cultural significance. We are honored, and we are jacked!”
Jackson has topped the country singles charts 35 times, and won countless awards, including three CMA Entertainer of the Year honors.

DISClaimer Single Reviews (3/23/11)

This week, we’re going from one extreme to the other.
At one end of the sonic spectrum, we have the stone-country sound of Bradley Gaskin. He stopped the show with “Mr. Bartender” during the CRS Convention, and this hardcore honky-tonk single will leave you gasping for breath. Give that man a DisCovery Award.
At the other end of the sonic spectrum is the magnificent, layered, pop/rock majesty of Music City tunesmith Chas Sandford. Go out right now and buy his Wag More, Bark Less disc debut.
We have everything from the retro-country sound of Brad Paisley to the classic R&B groove of the Don Ray Band, from the bopping return of Donny & Marie to the sober thoughts of papa Trace Adkins.
Our Disc of the Day goes to Martina McBride for telling it like it is in the lyrics of “Teenage Daughters.”
HEIDI NEWFIELD/Stay Up Late
Writer: Jimmy Yeary/Sonya Isaacs/Ben Hayslip; Producer: Blake Chancey; Publisher: Black to Black/ole/Nashvistaville/Sonya Isaacs/WB/Melissa’s Money/Get a Load of This, BMI/ASCAP; Curb
—The too-thick production almost overwhelms her soulful delivery. Mix her voice up hotter, but by all means keep that cool, shambling, backbeat rhythm track.
RACHEL HOLDER/Chocolate
Writer: Chuck Howard/Bob Regan/Kristy Osmunson; Producer: Chuck Howard & Wilbur Rimes; Publisher: none listed; All Entertainment (www.rachelholder.com)
—Brightly bouncy. Innocent fun. Her saucy delivery is nicely matched with a galloping, sprightly track.
BRAD PAISLEY & ALABAMA/Old Alabama
Writer: Brad Paisley/Chris DuBois/Dave Turnbull/Randy Owen; Producer: Frank Rogers; Publisher: House of Sea Gayle/Words & Music/Circle C/V Bulls/Full Circle/Sony-ATV Tree, ASCAP/BMI; Arista
—Nothing screams “1980s” like an old Alabama record. I’m not at all sure that sounding deliberately dated is a good idea. But if you’re cool with that, Brad quotes the song titles, uses the sounds and even signs up the reunited Alabama, itself, to lend vocals and guitar/fiddle chops.
ZANE WILLIAMS/Ride With Me
Writer: Zane Williams; Producer: Zane Williams; Publisher: Sony-ATV Cross Keys, ASCAP; Hack Circle (track) (www.ZaneWilliamsMusic.com)
—Perennial troubadour Zane has always been his own best interpreter. Here, he keeps things breezy, tuneful and earnest on a dandy open-road song. Love the rapid-fire lyric delivery, the fiddle solo and the steady, stuttering rhythm.
MARTINA McBRIDE/Teenage Daughters
Writer: Martina McBride/Brett Warren/Brad Warren; Producer: Byron Gallimore & Martina McBride; Publisher: StyleSonic/EMI Blackwood/Delemmava, BMI; Republic
—A little slab of universal truth from a lady who has always specialized in it. The crunchy production is full of interesting textures, and her vocal is ultra expressive.
DON RAY BAND WITH SHAUN MURPHY/Love Is
Writer: Don Ray; Producer: none listed; Publisher: Margdon, BMI; Margdon
—Darkly bluesy, throbbing and minor key. Accented with R&B horns. Shaun and Don swap gritty vocal licks like a soul sister and brother. Old school and cool.
BRADLEY GASKIN/Mr. Bartender
Writer: Bradley Gaskin; Producer: John Rich & Charlie Pennachio; Publisher: none listed, ASCAP; Columbia
—It is written so perfectly, you’ll swear you are listening to a revived classic from the catalog of George Jones, Johnny Paycheck or Merle Haggard. Hot, hot honky-tonk music with a ferocious bite. Say, “Amen,” country lovers.
CHAS SANDFORD/Broken
Writer: Chas Sandford/James Matchack; Producer: Chas Sandford; Publisher: Chas Alan Sandford/Madman Matchack, BMI; Hanalei Music Group (track) (www.chassanford.com)
—This pop/rock Nashvillian is notable as the composer of such masterpieces as “Missing You” (John Waite, Brooks & Dunn), “What Kind of Man Would I Be” (Chicago) and “Talk to Me” (Stevie Nicks). Rascal Flatts, Roger Daltrey, Sammy Hagar, Jimmy Barnes and Rick Springfield are among the others who have recorded his tunes. Sandford’s Wag More Bark Less CD is jam packed with potential monster hits. “Drop the needle” anywhere, and you’ll be blown away. His songwriting collaborators on the collection include such stellar contributors as Greg Barnhill, Shane McAnally, Lee Roy Parnell and James Dean Hicks. This particular track is an awesome, torn-from-the-chest ballad that he sings with searing tenor intensity. Sign me up for the fan club. You need this music in your life, too.
TRACE ADKINS/Just Fishin’
Writer: Casey Beathard/Monty Criswell/Ed Hill; Producer: Michael Knox; Publisher: Sony-ATV Acuff Rose/Six Ring Circus/Sony-ATV Tree/Five Hills/Do Write, BMI; Show Dog Universal
—Sweetly sentimental, it’s about a Daddy making memories with his little girl he loves so much. Full of heart.
DONNY & MARIE/The Good Life
Writer: Eric Paslay/Clay Mills; Producer: Buddy Cannon; Publisher: Cal IV/Still Working for the Woman, ASCAP; MPCA (CDX) (212-796-2030)
—Jaunty, well written and produced with panache. Both Osmonds still sing with vigor.

Rootmetrics Finds Verizon 4G Fastest

Rootmetrics, a Seattle-based company that compiles data about mobile networks has released a study showing that Verizon’s LTE 4G network delivered faster upload and download speeds in a test conducted inside the Seattle area market. Verizon’s LTE network also had better access. Other 4G networks sampled in the test included T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T. [Download the complete study here.]
“We used 4G capable smartphones to determine what the coonsumer epxerience looks like with regards to data speeds and data performance,” said Rootmetrics. “Each phone may or may not perform at 4G speeds all of the time and may connect to 3G or even 2G networks at some point depending upon time, location and network congestion.”
With respect to download speeds, Verizon’s LTE  “delivered speeds four times faster than the next fastest networks Sprint’s WiMax and T-Mobile’s HSPA+21 which tied for second place. Verizon was 14.5X faster than AT&T’s HSPA+ service.
Here are a few points from the study’s summary…

  • Verizon’s LTE download speeds were above 10Mbps 88% of the time. T-Mobile’s HSPA+21 download speeds were above 10Mbps 7% of the time and below 5MBps 61% of the time. Sprint’s download speed has higher that 10MBps 13% of the time and AT&T’s never were above 10MBps.
  • Methodology included using unaltered off-the-shelf smartphones equipped with the most up to date Android operating system (2.2). Devices used included HTC Evo (Sprint), HTC Inspire (AT&T), HTC Thunderbolt (Verizon) and Samsung Galaxy S (T-Mobile).
  • Rootmetrics is not endorsing any carrier and cautions that its results are not necessarily indicative of those across all cities nationwide. “Only time will tell,” the report states, “if Verizon can maintain these speeds as more consumers start to use the network.”

Dierks Bentley Offers First Music From Next Album

Facebook users who “like” him on the site can listen to his new single “Am I The Only One.” Fans can stream the song this week and purchase it through iTunes beginning March 29. The party-hearty track shows residual influences of his previous bluegrass inspired album, mixed with plenty of southern rock stylings. Written by Bentley, Jim Beavers and Jon Randall, it is from his sixth studio album for Capitol Records Nashville. No word on a release date for the project.
The album was tracked at Echo Mountain Studio in Asheville, NC, where Bentley and the other musicians lived and recorded 15 songs in five days. Over 35,000 fans streamed the sessions live via a 24-hour web cam. See a video about the lead single here.

His career album sales total over five million units.

Eye On Idol

American Idol contestants took a trip back in time on Wednesday (3/16), selecting songs from the year they were born. Interscope head Jimmy Iovine and his team of producers were on hand to give the songs a modern touch and coach contestants through the performances.

Karen Rodriguez

Ultimately New York native Karen Rodriguez was sent home on the results show, making her the second consecutive female in the Top 13 to exit. The Idol judges opted not to use their solitary save, but Randy Jackson pointed out that the decision was not unanimous. Rodriguez has struggled with both ends of her range over the last couple episodes, most recently with Taylor Dayne’s “Love Will Lead You Back.” Judge Jennifer Lopez addressed the problem, saying she hoped Karen would find some songs that suited her voice. Translation: don’t sing Mariah, Whitney or Celine.
Joining Rodriguez in the bottom three were Naima Adedapo and Haley Reinhart, who have so far failed to make a big impact. 20-year-old Reinhart has a unique, rough quality to her voice, but the fact that she’s jumped across the stylistic map every week from Alicia Keys’s “Fallin’” to Patsy Cline/LeAnn Rimes’ “Blue” and finally to Whitney Houston’s “I’m Your Baby Tonight” has left many wondering if she has any idea what kind of an artist she wants to be.

Scotty McCreery

Adedapo, perhaps more than any of the other contestants, has the distinct look of a star—beautiful, exotic, and colorful. But her pitch and control issues have gotten more obvious every week, especially in her rendition of Tina Turner’s 1984 classic “What’s Love Got To Do With It.” Unless something miraculous happens, both Adedapo and Rinehart will likely be on the way out in the next two or three weeks.
It’s a talented field overall with several strong contenders, but no obvious Top 3. The two country-centric singers, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, have both consistently turned in solid performances and look poised to last deep into the competition. Inexperience could be a trouble spot for both, however. McCreery has well-defined idea about what kind of artist he is, but has yet to fully develop the chops of his stylistic forebears like Josh Turner and Randy Travis. Alaina is a naturally talented, powerful singer, but at 15 her still-forming musical identity and lack of maturity could be problematic as the challenges start demanding more ingenuity.

Pia Toscano

If any contestant is a lock for the final, it’s Pia Toscano. She’s had less TV time so far than McCreery and Alaina, which will keep people interested, and she’s given knockout performances every week. She’s one of the rare singers with the range and power to sing a Whitney Houston song like “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” with confidence, and that is going to carry her far.
Paul McDonald, Casey Abrams and James Durbin could also find themselves lasting to the end if they continue to perform well. Durbin is the season’s token rocker with a penchant for screaming Judas Priest songs, but he’s also displayed noticeable growth since the Top 13 were selected–an important factor for Idol voters. Casey Abrams falls squarely in the lovable weirdo division. He never fails to turn in a compelling performance, most memorably on “I Put A Spell On You,” but health issues have already sidelined him two TV appearances. Will that upset his chances as the stress of the competition sets in? McDonald is similar in look and style to many previous winners of the show with a big fan base to boot, but his inability (or unwillingness) to play to the audience may alienate some of his support.
In the less-likely-to-win category, Stefano Langone, Thia Megia, and Jacob Lusk have also had some big moments but don’t appear to be threats to take the whole competition. Lusk puts his entire being into every soul-drenched performance, but his tendency to over-sing (like Heart’s “Alone”) severely limits his potential. Megia is another teenage contestant, but seems woefully out of step with what’s currently happening in popular music. Her voice is strong, but her bizarre song choices (“Colors of the Wind,” really?) don’t exactly make a convincing argument for her star power. To his credit, Langone turned in a great performance of the cheeseball hit “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” on Wednesday, but he’s still getting lost among some of the bigger personalities.
Bottom line, it makes for great TV. The new judges have an engaging chemistry together, and there are numerous memorable contestants to watch. We’ll be covering events from the Idol show every week, so make sure to check in here and share your thoughts with us.
