John Esposito Elevated To Chairman & CEO, Warner Music Nashville

John Esposito

John Esposito has been promoted to Chairman & CEO of Warner Music Nashville (WMN). The announcement was made Monday morning (May 16) by Warner Music Group (WMG).

Esposito has been President & CEO of Warner Music Nashville since 2009, when the division was established to expand WMG’s presence in Music City. WMN’s labels include Warner Bros. Nashville, Elektra Nashville, Atlantic Nashville, and Loudmouth Records. In his new post, Esposito will continue to report to WMG CEO Steve Cooper.

Alongside his post at WMN, Esposito serves as Chairman of the CMA Board of Directors and is a Governor on the Nashville Chapter Board of the Recording Academy. He is a board member of the T.J. Martell Foundation, Country Radio Broadcasters (CRB), and the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. and was also appointed by Nashville’s Mayor to the Music Makes Us council.

“Since taking over our Nashville operations nearly seven years ago, Espo has done a stellar job in making us a major force in country music,” said Steve Cooper. “Driven by his innovative thinking, inspiring leadership, and infectious enthusiasm, WMN has attracted and developed a fresh roster of amazing artists, built a world-class executive team, and delivered exceptional results. With Espo at the helm, we are expanding our commitment to Nashville and country music at large.”

“Nashville’s music community has an energy and creativity that are mind-blowing, and I’m proud to be a part of it,” said John Esposito. “Warner Music Nashville is blessed to work with brilliant artists who make tremendously exciting music, and are supported by the best A&R, marketing, and promotion teams in the business. We strive every day to create the most nurturing environment for our artists to do their best work, and we are thrilled to see our efforts bear fruit with a constant flow of hit records and industry awards. I look forward to the next chapter in building this great company.”

During Esposito’s tenure at WMN, the company has enjoyed a three-fold increase in its share of the country singles charts, with seven artists achieving their first No. 1 under his leadership, including Hunter Hayes, Brett Eldredge, Cole Swindell, Frankie Ballard, Michael Ray, Chris Janson, and Dan + Shay.

Other highlights include Blake Shelton achieving a record-setting 16 consecutive No.1 singles and winning five CMA Male Vocalist of the Year awards, as well as Hayes winning CMA New Artist of the Year in 2012, Eldredge winning CMA New Artist of the Year in 2015, and Swindell winning ACM New Artist of the Year in 2015.

Over the same period, WMN artists have produced seven platinum albums and 16 platinum singles. Other artists on the WMN roster include Jana Kramer, Ashley Monroe, Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, Charlie Worsham, Big Smo, Ryan Kinder, William Michael Morgan, The Railers, Walker County, The Last Bandoleros, High Valley and Jimmy Fallon.

Prior to moving to Nashville, Esposito served as President and CEO of WEA Corp., WMG’s sales and marketing division. He joined WMG in 2002 from The Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJ) where, as General Manager/Executive Vice President, he managed the company’s day-to-day operational activities.

Prior to IDJ, Esposito held a variety of executive positions at PolyGram, Inc. Before joining PolyGram, from 1993 to 1994 he was Chief Operating Officer of Music & Movies at The Wiz retail chain. From 1986 to 1993, Esposito was Regional Vice President of Mitsubishi Electronics America, where he managed the sales and operations staff.

A passionate environmentalist, Esposito created the WMG initiative WMGreen, for which he was awarded the “Forces for Nature” honor from the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC), as well as the inaugural Green Award for Environmental Responsibility from NARM (now Music Biz). He also sits on the Global Leadership Council of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

Coinciding with his promotion to WMN Chairman, Esposito will be honored on Tuesday, May 17, when he will receive the prestigious Presidential Award for Outstanding Executive Achievement from the Music Business Association (Music Biz). The presentation will take place during the Music Biz 2016 convention, held this year in Nashville.

In announcing the award, Music Biz President James Donio noted, “John has devoted his considerable talents to our industry for more than 30 years to advance the growth and vitality of the music business.” Esposito will join the ranks of previous recipients include including Frank Sinatra, Dick Clark, Walter Yetnikoff, Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun, and Clive Davis, among others.

The Academy of Country Music announced today that CEO Bob Romeo is stepping down after 12 years as the head of the organization.

“Working at the Academy has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career in the music business,” Romeo commented. “We’ve accomplished more than I could have ever dreamed — between our success celebrating the 50th anniversary in Texas and returning to our longtime home in Las Vegas, to the monies donated through ACM Lifting Lives — the organization is recognized as a leader in the business and that was my main goal when I joined the company. There is so much pride in how far we have moved the puck. That said, I’m looking forward to planning my next endeavor.”

“We are thankful for Bob’s leadership and dedication to the organization, and wish him the best in the next phase of his career,” said ACM Board Chairman Paul Barnabee.

EVP/Managing Director Tiffany Moon will serve as interim CEO.

‘Nashville’ Canceled By ABC, Mayor Megan Barry “Incredibly Disappointed”

Nashville on ABC

ABC’s Nashville will conclude its four-season run on May 25.

According to Variety, this season, the series is averaging a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.7 million viewers overall in Nielsen’s “live plus-7” estimates.

We are incredibly disappointed to hear the news that ABC has not renewed the show “Nashville” for another season. The show has been an enormously successful promotional tool for our city, which is why the State of Tennessee and Metro Nashville were prepared to support production for a fifth season the be filmed here. This is a loss for ABC and for the millions of fans across the world who have grown to love this show. We have enjoyed hosting the cast and crew of the show over the last four years and look forward to future opportunities for film and television production here in Nashville– Nashville Mayor Megan Barry (via Facebook)

Big Machine Records will release the latest volume of the series soundtrack, The Music of Nashville, Season 4, Volume 2, on Friday (May 13).

DISClaimer: Superb Vocalists Chris Stapleton, James Dupré Offer Soulful Singles

Chris Stapleton

Chris Stapleton

There are lots of stars in the mix today, but they’re not always the artists who shine brightest.

Josh Turner, Alabama, the red-hot Cole Swindell and Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott are all here with new discs. But the sound that stopped me in my tracks was by a newcomer. Louisiana-bred James Dupré submitted a minor masterpiece titled “Stoned to Death” and completely captivated me. Give that man an easily won DisCovery Award.

There’s one other red-hot star with a new offering today. That would be the mighty Chris Stapleton who far surpasses his peers and wins a Disc of the Day prize for “Parachute.”

COLE SWINDELL/Middle Of A Memory
Writers: Cole Swindell/Ashley Gorley/Zach Crowell; Producer: Michael Carter; Publishers: Sonuy-ATV Tree/Colden Rainey/Combustion Engine/Sadie’s Favorite/WB/External Combustion/Atlas/Songs of Southside Independent/Who Wants to Buy My Publishing, BMI/ASCAP; Warner Bros.
– His raspy delivery works well on this saga of a frustrated, foiled budding relationship. Michael Carter’s echoey electronic production touches are also pluses.

James Dupré

James Dupré

JAMES DUPRÉ/Stoned To Death
Writers: Jessi Alexander/Jeff Hyde/Clint Daniels; Producer: Jordan Lehning; Publishers: none listed; Purfectt Pitch
– The title tune of Dupré’s upcoming album can be previewed on his website. And I urge you to do so. This is a singer who exudes charisma with every note. The song is stupendously well-written, boasting both perfectly executed turns of phrases and a beautifully swelling melody. Lehning’s slowly building production bonfire is magnificent. Sign me up for the fan club. Now.

CHRIS STAPLETON/Parachute
Writers: Chris Stapleton/Jim Beavers; Producers: Dave Cobb/Chris Stapleton; Publishers: none listed; Mercury (track)
– The heartbeat rhythm grabs you by the chest and doesn’t let go. Stapleton’s shouted, soulful delivery blazes like a fire iron. This is torrid, torrid stuff. Let it burn, baby, burn.

ALABAMA/Come Find Me
Writers: Tony Lane/David Lee; Producers: Jeff Cook, Teddy Gentry & Randy Owen; Publishers: BMG Gold/We Jam Writers Group/Mood Merchant/4 Cow Ranch/Banz, BMI; BMG (CDX)
– It’s a quiet ballad about a road-weary musician. Randy Owen delivers it in an understated hush. It’s quite emotionally affecting.

JOSH TURNER/Hometown Girl
Writers: Marc Beeson/Daniel Tashian; Producer: Kenny Greenberg; Publishers: Downtown DLJ/Son of a Ron/Diver Dann/International Dog, ASCAP/BMI; MCA Nashville
– This sweet, airy rural portrait fits Turner like a glove. Not surprisingly, guitarist Greenberg produces it with plenty of electric-guitar flourishes.

GLENNA BELL/Tonight’s The Night
Writer: Glenna Bell; Producer: Mark Abernathy; Publisher: Glenna Bell, ASCAP; GB (track)
– Texas favorite Bell has a throaty, distinctive vocal style. Her records always perk up my ears. This outing is about young lovers graduating from high school. She recalls their courtship and vows to go all the way on their big night. I hung on every word. Her new collection is aptly titled Lone Star Songs and Stories Straight From the Heart of Texas.

HIllary Scott Thy Will 2016

HILLARY SCOTT & THE SCOTT FAMILY/Thy Will
Writers: Hillary Scott/Emily Weisband/Bernie Herms; Producers: Bernie Herms/Ricky Skaggs; Publishers: W.B.M./EKT/WB/Thankful For This/Songs of Universal/G650, SESAC/ASCAP/BMI; EMI (CDX)
– It’s very pretty. But is a hymn-like ballad swimming in strings going to fit summer playlists?

AMY BLACK/You Gotta Move
Writer: traditional; Producer: Lex Price; Publishers: public domain; RR (track)
– Massachusetts native Black might seem an odd fit for a themed collection called The Muscle Shoals Sessions. She tackles songs by Sam Cooke, Arthur Alexander, Don Covay, Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, as well as some originals. This traditional spiritual puts the spotlight on her confident alto singing. Guess what? She pulls it off.

BRIAN PHARAOH/Sorry
Writers: Brian Pharaoh/Bill DiLuigi; Producer: Kent Wells: Publishers: none listed; Spunkem
– Words were spoken. She left. But he’s not sorry, because he’s a redneck babe magnet. If you say so.

SHANE OWENS/Country Never Goes Out Of Style
Writers: Galen Griffin/Jason Patrick Matthews/Kerry Kurt Phillips; Producer: James Stroud: Publishers: Galen Griffin/EMI April/Songfighter/Dixie Stars, BMI/ASCAP; AmeriMonte (CDX)
– Shane strikes again with his uber cool, note-bending vocals. The gently swaying tune is like a hammock in a spring breeze. And you can bet this pluperfect country stylist means every word of the lyric.

She began the show with “Funnel of Love,” the first track on her new album and took the audience on a musical journey through her latest project offerings intertwining both new and old material. While “detouring,” her performances of classic country standards from her latest project included “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “The End Of The World,” “Heartaches by the Number,” and “Misty Blue.”

Her performance of “Money Changes Everything” brought the crowd to their feet with the audience gladly singing along to her hit tunes that followed, including “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” and “Time After Time” before closing out the show with an encore of “True Colors.”

With this being the first stop of the tour, Lauper admitted she was still “working some of the kinks out” but the audience didn’t mind at all.

Fans have the opportunity to donate to the True Colors Fund and a chance to win exclusives, including a dinner with Cyndi Lauper backstage. Lauper is playing select dates during the DETOUR tour with Boy George, including the June 1 Vienna, Va. show, where the winning donation will have an opportunity to meet the artists backstage, have dinner with Lauper among other perks. The True Colors Fund, an organization co-founded by Lauper, works to end homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.
