Tin Pan South attendees were treated to more great music Wednesday night (March 29) at bars and listening rooms across Nashville.

Ian Munsick, Jacob Davis, Will Jones and Marc Scibilia took on the early show at The Listening Room, while Madison Kozak, Griffen Palmer and Mark Trussell took on The Vinyl Lounge. Ben Burgess, Josh Kerr, Brandon Paddock and Parker Welling played the Analog at the Hutton Hotel. Madeline Edwards and Laura Veltz had some special guests at The Bluebird Cafe.

Casey Brown, Brad Clawson, Hunter Phelps, Jordan Rowe and Will Weatherly played the 6 p.m. show at 3rd & Lindsley before Ashley Gorley, Ben Johnson, Wyatt McCubbin and Taylor Phillips took over at 9 p.m.

Harper Grace, Alex Kline, Joe Leathers and Bobby Tomberlin took the stage at the Commodore Grille for the late show; while Ingrid Andress, Carter Faith and Adam James played at The Listening Room.

Keelan Donovan, Caylee Hammack and Tenille Townes closed out The Vinyl Lounge with some music; as did Renee Blair, Kevin Griffin, Zac Maloy and Adam Sanders at the Hard Rock Cafe.

Jason Isbell Documentary Set For April On HBO Max

A new Sam Jones-directed documentary, Jason Isbell: Running with Our Eyes Closed, will be released on HBO Max April 7.

In his own words, Isbell takes fans on an unexpected journey through his musical evolution and creative process as he goes into the studio to record his album Reunions with the 400 Unit. He dives into his difficult childhood, his struggles with addiction and relationships, and funneling all his pain and private battles into his music. When the pandemic forces him and his family into lockdown, Isbell confronts the self-doubt and fears that isolation brings to a recovering addict and artist, even as the album releases to rave reviews.

Isbell is currently prepping for his new album, Weathervanes, out June 9, with the release of a brand new track from the album, “Middle of the Morning.” “It was about trying to keep my mind from unraveling over the couple of years there,” says Isbell of the new song.

Isbell and the 400 Unit are currently on the road throughout the summer, and will head down under to Australia next week before bringing their show back to the states.

This anthem salutes the perseverance that her career illustrates. She’s been on the country scene since 2005, and as the song says, she’s still here. So is her duet partner, Miko Marks, who arrived around the same time. The two enduring country women of color are launching a historic tour together this year. They’ll be at City Winery on May 18.

BRANDY CLARK / “Buried “

– This is a stunning ballad of ache and loss by one of our greatest living country songwriters. Clark’s broken-hearted delivery is shadowed by gentle acoustic guitar plucking and soft vocal harmonies. Among the many brilliant touches in the writing is the artful placing of the song’s title as the song’s very last word. She is just so awesome. It’s an advance track from her forthcoming fourth album. With Shane McAnally, Clark is also the cowriter of the Broadway musical Shucked, which opens in New York on April 4. Last Sunday’s New York Times had an extensive piece about it.

– One of my favorite current neo-traditionalists is back with a highly listenable romantic meditation. Deep-twang guitar and sighing steel back him as he muses about leaving his wild ways behind to fall in love. I remain a fan.

LUKE LAIRD, LORI McKENNA & BARRY DEAN / “Give Me Back My Hometown”

– These three Music Row songwriting champs are issuing a collection called The Songwriter Tapes containing their versions of mega hits they’re written for others. The advance track is Laird’s gentle-voiced rendition of a hit he cowrote with the great Eric Church. He lacks the superstar’s fire and vocal charisma, but the soft, echoey production throws a real spotlight on the song’s marvelous lyrics.

UTA Signs Singer-Songwriter Emily Ann Roberts

Country artist Emily Ann Roberts has signed with UTA for global representation in all areas.

The Knoxville native is currently managed by Starstruck Entertainment’s Narvel Blackstock and Berkley Kriz, and first gained notability with her runner-up finish on season nine of The Voice as a member of Blake Shelton’s team in 2015. In 2019, she released her debut EP Someday Dream, which landed at No. 2 on the Billboard Album charts.

Roberts has since amassed more than 20 million cumulative streams to date. Her latest single “He Set Her Off” earned over 16,000 pre-saves and more than 500,000 streams in two weeks. She has also graced the Grand Ole Opry stage 16 times and opened for artists including Reba McEntire, Shelton, Sara Evans, Josh Turner, Scotty McCreery, Ricky Skaggs and more.

Rodney Crowell Preps ‘The Chicago Sessions’ For May

Rodney Crowell is releasing a new album, The Chicago Sessions, on May 5 via New West Records, and has shared the video for the album highlight “Loving You Is the Only Way to Fly.”

Produced by Jeff Tweedy and recorded at Wilco’s Loft in Chicago, the 10-song collection touches on everything from love and mortality to race and religion. While most of The Chicago Sessions consists of newly-written material, Crowell revisits two tracks from the 1970s. The first, “You’re Supposed to Be Feeling Good,” is a Crowell original that was recorded by Emmylou Harris on her 1977 Luxury Liner record. The second, Townes Van Zandt’s “No Place to Fall,” has always held a special place in Crowell’s heart.

“The first time I heard that song, Townes was sitting across the table from me at Guy and Susanna Clark’s house,” Crowell recalls. “He said, ‘Hey, I’ve got a new song for you,’ and it’s been imprinted on my psyche ever since. I wanted to record it as an homage to somebody that I learned a lot about songwriting from.”

Crowell previously released the video for the album’s first single, “Everything at Once,” which features footage from The Loft during recording. A co-write with Tweedy, the song walks a tightrope between hope and despair as it wrestles with overstimulation in an overcrowded world.

Additionally, Crowell has announced his tour dates in support of The Chicago Sessions. Launching May 2 in New York City at Sony Hall, the initial run features stops at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago and Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. He also announced dates for his annual songwriting camp “It Starts With A Song 2023,” which is set to take place Aug. 21-24 in Nashville.

CMA To Livestream Country Music Hall Of Fame Inductees Announcement

CMA is hosting a livestream to announce the 2023 Country Music Hall of Fame inductees on April 3. The livestream will be hosted by Vince Gill and can be watched on CMA’s YouTube channel here. 

Established by CMA as an institution devoted to recognizing and honoring noteworthy individuals for outstanding contributions to country music. Last year’s inductees included Joe Galante, Keith Whitley and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Miranda Lambert Announces Multi-Year Partnership With Lone River Beverage Company

Tenille Townes To Roll Out ‘Train Track Worktapes’ In April

Tenille Townes channeled her inner gypsy on her upcoming new project, the Train Track Worktapes, due out April 21.

The new five-song collection was conceptualized, written, and recorded on a charity train trip that covered nearly 3,000 miles. A tradition in her native country, the CP Holiday Train benefits Canadian food banks when their need is greatest, with each attendee bringing donations to catch the free concert that occurs right on the train cars. During their 15 days onboard last December, Townes and her band played 65 shows to crowds ranging from dozens to thousands in communities across southern Canada.

“Being in motion is my favorite state. I love the hum of the engines and the blur of the evergreens out the window, in any mode of transportation. I really do believe that home is not a place, but a feeling that you get,” says Townes. “And being on the road, singing songs for people and feeling a part of a collective brought together through music, that feels like home to me. This collection of songs will always represent that traveling spirit. I hope anyone who listens feels like they are riding right there with us.”

Across the five tracks, Townes explores concepts such as what defines home, living life in motion, quenching a troubadour spirit and feeling all-consuming joy. She produced the project alongside guitarist Jaxon Hargrove, and her band got resourceful with their train setup. A suitcase turned into a kickdrum. Tin foil and paper bowls became a shaker. Teacups made the perfect substitute for a triangle. They borrowed equipment and microphones from the train cars housing the stage and gear. Recording mainly in the train’s caboose, sometimes capturing takes in 20-minute spurts between shows, the group allowed the rattle and rhythm of the train to sink into each song.

“The generosity of everyone bringing donations to their local food banks as we travelled along was a reminder to me of how much good there is in the world, especially in the heart of the smaller, remote communities,” she continues. “In between all these shows, I made it my mission to write about what it felt like to witness that, ride the high and capture what I was feeling on the trip.”

MCA Nashville recording artist Parker McCollum‘s rise continues with the RIAA Gold certification of his hit “Handle On You.” On March 29, McCollum was presented with a plaque by UMG Nashville President Cindy Mabe and RIAA’s Jackie Jones to commemorate the accomplishment.

“Another Gold record – what an awesome thing to be able to say,” shares McCollum. “I can’t thank the fans enough for always showing up. Y’all keep this whole thing going and I couldn’t do it without you.”

Texas Regional Radio Awards

The T3R Texas Regional Radio Report Music Awards held its 13th annual ceremony on March 27 at Texas Live! in Arlington, Texas. Aaron Watson, Bri Bagwell, Wade Bowen, Sarah Hobbs, and radio programming directors from across the nation attended.

Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top received this year’s Living Legend Award. Bowen took home three of the night’s biggest awards—Male Vocalist of the Year, Single of the Year, and Song of the Year—for his song “Everything Has Your Memory.” Watson won the Entertainer of the Year award, and Ariel Hutchins received the Female Vocalist of the Year and Music Video of the Year awards for “Stuck.”

Kin Faux Band, The Great Divide, and William Clark Green were part of the lineup, among others. Several stations won radio awards during the evening including KFWR/Fort Worth, KOKE-FM/Austin, and KRMX/Waco.

Noah Thompson Featured in Kentucky Music Hall of Fame & Museum

On March 21, the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum unveiled a new exhibition honoring Noah Thompson, American Idol‘s 2022 winner and a Louisa, Kentucky native. The exhibit features singers, songwriters, business owners, and musicians that have made a recent impact on Kentucky music.

“I knew the moment that he auditioned on American Idol that Noah Thompson had a special vocal talent,” recalls Jessica Blankenship, Executive Director. “This young man represented Kentucky in a positive manner and continues to do so. The Kentucky Music Hall of Fame wanted to capture that moment of winning American Idol with a special exhibit.”

“Winning American Idol and being able to do music full time has been a dream come true and something I never imagine could happen,” shares Thompson. “I’m thankful I could make my home state proud.”

Fans will be able to see clothing that Thompson wore on the finale, as well as photos along his journey. The exhibit is open to the public daily and will be up through the end of 2023.

Sac Song & Wine Series Kicks Off May 17 with Lee Thomas Miller, Wendell Mobley

The inaugural Sac Song & Wine Series is set to begin May 17 at Miner’s Leap Winery in Clarksburg, California. Hit songwriters Lee Thomas Miller (“The Impossible” by Joe Nichols, “You’re Gonna Miss This” by Trace Adkins, “In Color” by Jamey Johnson) and Wendell Mobley (“We Can’t Love This Anymore” by Alabama, “How Forever Feels” by Kenny Chesney, “Fast Cars and Freedom” by Rascal Flatts) are the featured performers.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring this unique music experience to the Sacramento area!  I hope it will become a tradition for friends and family to come together and enjoy amazing wine, incredible country music performed by the most talented songwriters themselves, all while taking in the beautiful sunset framed in the backdrop of Miner’s Leap Winery,” said Randi Moody, Sac Song & Wine Series event producer and owner of rlm events inc.

Songwriters including Nicolle Galyon, Chris DeStefano, Hunter Phelps, Rodney Clawson, Bobby Pinson and more are set to take part in the series that runs through next fall.

Alex Miller Brings ‘Miller Time’ To European Country Station

Alex Miller is launching a new, curated one-hour radio show, Miller Time, for CMR Nashville, one of Europe’s top country music stations. Set to run on the third Sunday of every month this year, each episode will include a broad array of songs from country standards to new artists

“I did a similarly formatted show on my Facebook for a couple of years,” American Idol alum Miller states. “It’s a ton of fun and a lot of folks seem to enjoy it. I just love sharing music, and CMR is giving me a cool way to do that.”

“I am proud to have Alex on board as a special guest presenter,” notes CMA International Broadcaster and CMR founder Lee Williams. “I’ve loved him since American Idol and, as I’ve gotten to know him a bit over the last few years, I’m sure our listeners will love him and his show.”

Alex joins the current CMR Nashville roster, which features Diamond Rio’s Dana Williams. The station’s popular regular presenters include Stuart Cameron, Tim Rogers, Marie Crighton, Johnny Da Piedade and Paul Taylor.

Robbins penned four cuts on Morris’ album Girl (2019 CMA Album of the Year) including her Grammy-nominated, 2021 ACM Song of the Year, 2020 CMA Song of the Year, 2020 AIMP Song of the Year, and two-week country No. 1 single, “The Bones.” The smash single was also No. 1 at Hot AC, No. 1 at Adult Contemporary radio, a 19-week No. 1 at Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs, No. 9 on Billboard‘s Top Hot 100 Songs of 2020, No. 2 on Billboard‘s Top Country Songs of 2020, and has accumulated 1 billion total audience spins on iHeart Radio.

He is a CMA Triple Play Award winner for penning three No. 1 songs in a 12-month period, and was ASCAP Song Of The Year winner for Rhett’s “It Goes Like This.” Robbins also received a 2021 ASCAP Pop Award for “The Bones” being one of the most performed pop songs of the year. As a producer, Robbins has produced hits such as Maddie + Tae‘s “Die From A Broken Heart” and Canaan Smith’s “Love You Like That,” as well as a No. 1 album for RaeLynn’s Wildhorse.
