Louisiana Cajun Music Legend Jo-El Sonnier Dies Following Show

Jo-El Sonnier

Cajun country artist Jo-El Sonnier passed away on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the age of 77.

He died following a heart attack after a performance in Llano, Texas. Texas promoter Tracy Pitcox posted the news on his Facebook account on Sunday (Jan. 14). Sonnier had reportedly ended his show with a performance of his hit ‘Tear Stained Letter,’ receiving a standing ovation.

With a career that spanned decades, Sonnier demonstrated a talent for music early on. Born in Rayne, Louisiana to French-speaking sharecroppers, he learned to play the accordion at three, was on the radio by six and recorded his first songs at 11. He released several independent singles and albums as a teenager, and later signed with Mercury Records Nashville in the 1970s. Upon signing with RCA Records in the 1980s, he released hits like “No More One More Time” and “Tear Stained Letter.”

He later recorded for Capitol Records and Rounder Records and briefly explored acting, even making an appearance in the HBO series True Detective. Sonnier’s albums Cajun Pride and Cajun Blood received Grammy nominations, and he won a Grammy for best regional roots album for The Legacy in 2015. He was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

Details regarding services have not yet been announced.

Deluge Music Launches Two New Labels

Deluge Music has launched two new record labels, East Music Row Records and Deluge Records Nashville.

East Music Row Records emerged from the minds of Deluge Music Founder David Robkin and singer-songwriters and producers Johnny Gates and Austin Luther with a goal of blending the hip, innovative sides of Nashville’s new indie rock and alternative-country music with the musicianship, professionalism and ingenuity of Music Row classists. East Music Row has already signed its first artist Felicity, an Australian alternative-pop creator based in Music City.

Under the umbrella of his “By Artists, For Artists” collective, Robkin has continued to grow Deluge Music since the company’s inception in 2015. His team includes artists, writers and producers such as Gates, Luther and Sam Grow as well as radio veteran Brad Austin.

Deluge Records Nashville is modeled in the tradition of the legendary FAME Studio in Muscle Shoals or the spirit of places like Sun Records in Memphis and Motown in Detroit. A single from country-pop artist Alexandria Corn marked the label’s first release. The next will be a song by country artist Blake Wood, set for early February. Both artists are produced by Grow.

Kenny Chesney Shares Album Title, Cover Of Upcoming New Project

Kenny Chesney has revealed the title of his upcoming new album due out in March: Born. The leadoff track from the new project, “Take Her Home,” is already rising up the country charts.

“As for the title, well, we’re still not quite done deciding what’s going on here, but one thing’s for sure: Born is absolutely the title track,” says Chesney. “It’s got a lot of heart, a lot of soul – and it speaks the truth about living, life and what we’re all doing here. Banjo out front, a great big pocket that rocks back and forth, it feels great. But more importantly, it’s a lyric that throws out all the options, never tells you what to do and throws out the one existential truth no matter what you choose: ‘one thing’s for certain, we’ve all been living since the day we were born.’”

Chesney has been hard at work putting the finishing touches on the project, adding songs and distilling it down to just the right mix before taking it to his No Shoes Nation of fans.

“I’m just trying to find songs that continue the story of who we are…how we live, breathe, work, rock, kick back and sometimes get tangled up in feelings that are anything but simple. Normally, we wait until it’s all figured out, the T’s are crossed, the I’s are dotted. But everything about this record’s been different – from how much time we’ve spent, the different ways we recorded and wrote and found songs – so why not let the fans know as we’re finishing up? We make this music for them, so, here you go. It’s official: Born, March 29.  Now to the final line-up, and maybe getting a couple more out there.”
