The Nashville Symphony Association and Symphony Ball 2024 Co-Chairs Jason Bradshaw and Bob Deal have revealed that country music legend Randy Travis and former Warner Music Nashville CEO John Esposito will be the co-recipients of the 2024 Nashville Symphony Harmony Award.
An annual award from the Nashville Symphony since 1986, the Harmony Award celebrates individuals who demonstrate the harmonious spirit of Nashville’s music community.
“As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Symphony Ball, we are thrilled to recognize two remarkable figures in Nashville’s music community,” share Bradshaw and Deal. “Each in his own way, Randy Travis and John Esposito have revolutionized and reinvigorated country music, and their talents are matched only by their commitment to raising up the next generation of music makers.”
“Randy Travis is one of the most important and influential performers in country music history,” adds Nashville Symphony CEO and President Alan D. Valentine. “His immense musical legacy, personal resilience, and heart for philanthropy all embody the spirit of the Harmony Award. Through the Randy Travis Foundation, he has worked to provide music education and enrichment opportunities for at-risk youth while raising awareness about stroke and aphasia.
“John Esposito has dedicated his life to music, from his earliest days as an avid fan and performer to his transformative leadership of Warner Music Nashville, turning it into the country music powerhouse it is today,” he continues. “The Nashville music community owes him an immeasurable debt, and we are honored to recognize his contributions.”
A huge influence of country’s neotraditional movement of the 1980s and ’90s, Travis has recorded more than 20 albums, earning more than 50 hit singles and 23 No. 1s around the globe, including “On the Other Hand,” “Forever and Ever, Amen,” “Three Wooden Crosses” and more. Over the longevity of his career, he has collected seven Grammys, six CMA Awards and 11 ACM Awards, along with many other honors. A severe stroke in 2013 left Travis physically limited and largely ended his performing career, but years of physical therapy have allowed him to return to the stage in a different capacity.
“My passion for music brought me to Nashville and my love for Nashville kept me here — they are my lifeline,” says Travis. “The opportunities and challenges found in music changed my direction in life in such a positive way. I’m honored to receive the Harmony Award from the Nashville Symphony, joining them in sharing our passions of today to create avenues in music for our generations of tomorrow.”
Esposito spent his college days playing in bands and DJing for the campus radio station, before moving into the business side of the industry for an illustrious career. His previous roles include COO of former entertainment retail chain The Wiz, executive roles at Polygram and Island Def Jam, and most recently serving as CEO/Chairman of Warner Music Nashville for 15 years before moving into a Chairman Emeritus role in 2022, and retiring from there in 2023. While at Warner Music Nashville, Esposito had a huge hand in the success Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown Band, Cole Swindell, Dan + Shay, Hunter Hayes, Ashley McBryde and more.
Esposito has also served as past Chairman of the CMA’s board of directors, Governor of the board of the Recording Academy’s Nashville chapter and executive committee board member of the Country Radio Broadcasters Association. Since 2023, he has been Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the T.J. Martell Foundation.
“Music saved my life and then became my life,” shares Esposito. “It was music education that gave me my voice. I am honored to be chosen for the Harmony Award and proud to be part of a fun night that will raise funds that help music education.”
Travis and Esposito will be honored during the 40th annual Symphony Ball on Dec. 14 at Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. Tickets are available now.

DISClaimer Single Reviews: Lonestar ‘Try’ & Succeed On P!nk Cover
/by Robert K OermannLonestar. Photo: Michael Gomez
The country artists are rocking out in this edition of DISClaimer.
Offering uptempo fare are Luke Grimes, Mike Parker, The Oak Ridge Boys, Jenna Paulette and Neon Union. Even so, the most affecting performances are on the ballads by Carter Faith and Jamey Johnson.
And the best produced tunes are the midtempo outings by Disc of the Day winners Lonestar and DISCovery Award winner Grace Bowers.
THE OAK RIDGE BOYS / “That’s The Way Mama Made It”
Writers: Aaron Raitiere/David Lee Murphy; Producer: Dave Cobb; Label: Lightning Rod Records
– Set to a Bo Diddley beat, this lively bopper features the group’s new member Ben James on lead vocal. Crisply produced and delivered with panache.
MIKE PARKER / “Doesn’t Kill Ya”
Writers: Jimmy Robbins/Michael Parker; Producer: Jimmy Robbins; Label: Mailbox Money Records
– He’s drowning his heartbreak in whiskey while a sprightly dance rhythm keeps the mood rollicking and upbeat. Parker is joined by a pair of comely dancers in the video. The Black country stylist competed on American Idol in 2022.
LUKE GRIMES / “Black Powder”
Writers: Brian Allen/Chris Powell/Dave Cobb/Luke Grimes; Producer: Dave Cobb; Label: UMG Nashville
– The reboot of TV’s Yellowstone launched this week and Grimes continues to be a key character. Meanwhile, he continues his quest for country stardom. He performed this on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday (Nov. 12), the day after kicking off his new tour. It’s a sexy country rocker that he gives plenty of vocal punch. Grimes is booked to play the Ryman tonight and will debut on the Grand Ole Opry tomorrow evening (Nov. 15).
JENNA PAULETTE / “Run The Damn Ball”
Writers: Casey Beathard/Hunter Phelps/Rodney Clawson; Producer: Will Bundy; Label: Leo33
– Paulette continues her winning ways with this feisty romp using football lingo as a metaphor for down-to-earth living. This lady is a solid country singer with personality and twang to spare. In my book, that makes her worthy of stardom.
GRACE BOWERS / “Going To California”
Writers: Jimmy Page/Robert Plant; Producer: John Osborne; Label: GB
– Bowers is an 18-year-old guitar wunderkind who is produced by Brothers Osborne’s equally gifted guitar slinger John Osborne. The song is her reworking of a Led Zeppelin number from 1971 that appeared on the group’s fourth album. A twinkling, celestial shower of stringed instruments swirl around her folkie soprano vocal in this magical soundscape. Do you ears a favor and treat them to this. The production’s female cast includes Sierra Hull, SistaStrings and Lucie Silvas, all of whom you should also get to know.
JAMEY JOHNSON / “Someday When I’m Old”
Writers: Aimee Mayo/Chris Lindsey/Troy Verges; Producer: The Kent Hardly Playboys; Label: Big Gassed Records/Warner Music Nashville
– Last week, Grand Ole Opry great Johnson dropped Midnight Gasoline as his new collection. It’s his first new album in 14 years, and the wait has been worth it. This week, he issued its first video. It is an eye-opening use of AI technology to illustrate him interacting with himself as he looked 20 years ago. As previously reviewed, the song is his moody, moving meditation about what he might say to his younger self. The ballad moves at a languid pace as the lyric poignantly explores aging and memory and mortality.
ANDREW FARRISS / “Something Stronger”
Writers: Andrew Farriss/Lawrence Minson; Producer: Andrew Farriss; Label: AF
– Remember INXS and its passionate 1987 rock hit “Need You Tonight”? The Aussie band’s Andrew Farriss is now recording in a country/Americana mode. His single’s track is a pluperfect country rocker and the song is also catchy and country. But he remains a pop singer rather than a country vocal stylist.
LONESTAR / “Try”
Writers: Ben West/Busbee; Producer: Dean Sams; Label: Lonestar
– This is a cover of P!nk’s 2012 pop hit “Try.” First of all, I adore P!nk. Second of all, new lead vocalist Drew Womack has always affected me deeply (recall his work in Sons of the Desert). Third of all, this reinterpretation works spectacularly well. Absolutely play “Try” on repeat. The track is drawn from a forthcoming EP of Lonestar’s country versions of iconic songs by female pop artists such as Adele, Fleetwood Mac’s Christine McVie, Cyndi Lauper and Eurhythmics. Essential listening.
NEON UNION / “Alright Where She Left Me”
Writers: Andrew Millsaps/Brandon Hood/Leo Brooks; Producer: Brandon Hood; Label: Red Street Records
– She’s left him, but a night in the barroom will make everything okay. Raucous and celebratory.
SAMMY KERSHAW / “I’d Rather Go Blind”
Writers: Billy Foster/Jordan Ellington; Producer: Rick Price; Label: Goldenlane Records
– You are treading on shaky ground when attempting to cover a torrid Etta James soul classic. Kershaw gives it his best country shot, but comes up short. James, by the way, is also the song’s uncredited co-writer.
CARTER FAITH / “The Aftermath”
Writers: Carter Faith/Lauren Hungate/Tofer Brown; Producer: Tofer Brown; Label: UMG Nashville
– Aching and bittersweet, this is a splendid heartache ballad. Faith’s plaintive soprano wanders the emotional landscape of a breakup so exquisitely that you hang on every line of the performance. I was enchanted.
REBECCA FRAZIER / “High Country Road Trip”
Writers: Rebecca Frazier/Rorey Carroll; Producer: Bill Wolf; Label: Compass Records Group
– She first gained notice for her deft acoustic guitar playing and her participation in the award-winning band Hit and Run. But her new Boarding Windows in Paradise album equally showcases Frazier as a songwriter and singer. This breezy bluegrass romp sounds just like its open-air, “road trip” title. A stellar cast backs her, including Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Stuart Duncan and Barry Bales. Frazier plays the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday.

Dolly Parton Teams With Kendra Scott On New ‘Butterfly’ Collection
/by Lorie HollabaughDolly Parton
Dolly Parton has launched a limited-edition collection designed in partnership with jewelry designer Kendra Scott inspired by her iconic 1974 song, “Love Is Like a Butterfly.”
The collection marks the beginning of a multi-year collaboration that blends Parton’s larger-than-life style with Scott’s signature gemstones and silhouettes. Inspired by Scott’s admiration of Parton, each piece is a limited-edition and embodies the Country Music Hall of Famer’s spirit as a beacon of creativity and philanthropy.
Among the unique pieces are the Dolly Parton x Kendra Scott 1974 Necklace, with exactly 1,974 statement Butterfly necklaces created, inspired by Scott’s personal connection to Parton’s iconic 1974 song, “Love Is Like a Butterfly,” which was released the year she was born. Featuring 10 unique designs, the collection captures the themes of love, joy and self-expression at the heart of Parton’s legacy. It celebrates a lifetime of inspiration while marking the 50th anniversary of Parton’s beloved Love is Like a Butterfly album.
“Before I ever met Kendra, I was aware of her reputation as a self-made woman, her kind heart and of course, her wonderful jewelry line. I was honored to learn she was a fan of mine and even more honored when she asked me if I wanted to partner on a jewelry collection based on my song ‘Love Is Like A Butterfly.’ Naturally, I said yes. The more I get to know Kendra, the more I love her. She’s the real deal, beautiful inside and out. I hope you enjoy our collection as much as we’ve enjoyed each other while putting it together for you,” says Parton.
“It’s hard to put into words what Dolly Parton means to me. She’s the ultimate role model: a prime example of staying true to yourself, believing in the power of art and creativity, and giving back along the way. I’ve admired and looked up to Dolly my whole life, and working with her has truly been a full circle, pinch-me moment. I’ve looked to her—as so many of us can and do—for inspiration, humor, and kindness. This collection captures that beautifully and I’m so proud for fans to explore a jewelry collection that can live up to the absolutely singular Dolly Parton,” shares Scott.
To celebrate the new collection, there will be launch events and elevated shopping experiences at select stores across the country.

Last week, the Haley Gallery at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum celebrated the opening of “Heritage: Southern Vernacular.” The exhibit features quilts made by women in the Gee’s Bend community of Alabama, as well as sculptures and two-dimensional works from Black vernacular artists who are also associated with the state. On Nov. 7, Gee’s Bend quilters Loretta Pettway Bennett, Claudia Pettway Charley and Marlene Bennett Jones participated in a panel discussion about Gee’s Bend’s history and its connection to the museum’s expanded box set of recordings and online experience “From Where I Stand: The Black Experience in Country Music.” The collection spans a century of country music by Black artists, and is illustrated with Gee’s Bend quilts from roughly the same time periods as the music. Following the panel, a public reception was hosted in the Gallery to celebrate the exhibition’s opening.
On Nov. 8, Gee’s Bend quilters Loretta Pettway Bennett, Claudia Pettway Charley, Marlene Bennett Jones, Cathy Mooney, Joe Ann Pettway and Stella Pettway participated in a quilting demonstration in the Haley Gallery in the afternoon. Complementing the quilts are sculptures, paintings and works on paper, by Richard Dial, Thorton Dial, Charlie Lucas, Betty Sue Matthews and Mose Tolliver. The exhibition, which is guest-curated by Paul Barrett, is free and open to the public through Jan. 7.
