Kenny Chesney is planning a full-scale tour after a year off the road.
In 2010, summer touring took a downhill turn, but as the weather warms up, so do the predictions for this year’s concert biz.
After a year off the road,
Kenny Chesney is mounting a major outing, sharing billing on the stadium dates with
Zac Brown Band. Big stars like Chesney and Brown, who may have toured separately in a booming economy, are teaming up for dates in big venues to boost ticket sales.
George Strait and
Reba are co-headlining a tour that was one of
Billboard Boxscore’s Top 25 Tours of 2010.
The Strait/Reba package,
Rascal Flatts, Brad Paisley and
Carrie Underwood are among the country stars who successfully navigated 2010’s touring slump, though some had more special guests than others. Underwood didn’t need another big name to sell tickets to her tour, she flew solo on her headlining arena run, playing to over a million fans.
Venturing overseas is another way acts are thriving on the road.
Alan Jackson performed a series of shows in Australia for the first time in his career last month. And Aussie
Keith Urban is currently leading a tour Down Under with guests
Lady Antebellum.
One of the hottest acts of the year,
Taylor Swift has been on a worldwide outing and is back in the states, continuing her sell-out run. She concluded the overseas leg with a sold-out show in London, and simultaneously added 16 new dates to the North American portion of the tour, which kicks off May 27. When that leg wraps just before Thanksgiving, she will have headlined 97 stadium and arena shows around the world in 2011.

High ticket prices were one of the factors fueling last year’s touring downturn. Since December, commentators like
The New York Post have been predicting lower ticket prices for this season.
Chesney manager
Clint Higham told the
Wall Street Journal that the singer lowered lawn seat prices from $40 in 2009, to about $30 for this year. Higham added that his superstar increased the number of dates, up from 45 to 60, to make up the difference at the box office. He says Chesney’s ticket sales are already up 15%, thanks partly to taking last year off and “being missed.”
Manager
Ken Levitan also talked to the
Wall Street Journal for the new article. He says that artists are cutting corners to lower touring costs. “We might be jamming more people on fewer buses, or doing a little less pyro on stage,” he told the paper.
“Our merch numbers are very strong,” he added, “and that’s a good sign of a little more disposable income out there.” He pointed out that his client
Kid Rock has been moving about $14 a head in merch, where $10 would be considered strong. In keeping with the current trend that two acts are better than one, Kid Rock will be pairing with
Sheryl Crow for a summer outing.
Carter's Chord Plans New EP
/by Sarah SkatesWild Together, set for release May 24, features six songs from sisters Becky, Emily and Joanna Robertson.
The lead single from the Show Dog-Universal Music project, “A Little Less Comfortable,” is a showcase for the family harmonies.
In 2011, the band has been building its team, including announcing a publishing deal with UMPG Nashville, and signing with Jennifer Bohler’s Alliance Media for PR representation.
The band says the new project is a reflection of their growth as writers and musicians. Through the process, they found their artistic identity, which has a little bit of attitude like on tracks “I Can Break Hearts Too” and “Simple Little Screwed Up Life.”
The sisters have a wide variety of influences, particularly their parents Carter and Barny Robertson’s work with Waylon Jennings, but the common thread is an organic sound.
Eye On Idol (4/08/11)
/by FreemanPia Toscano
What an impossibly strange week on American Idol.
First, legendary rock ‘n’ roll degenerate Iggy Pop performed (shirtless!) on the Thursday (4/7) results show. He’s almost 64. So there’s that.
And then, in a shocking turn of events, Pia Toscano–widely thought to be a frontrunner–was sent home.
After several weeks of big ballads, the Idol judges were begging Pia to sing something uptempo. So on Wednesday’s (4/6) Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-themed show, she opted for the Ike & Tina Turner classic “River Deep, Mountain High” and delivered a fiery interpretation that would have likely pleased even crazy, gun-toting Phil Spector.
Yet it wasn’t enough.
So what happened? History suggests that voters assumed she was safe and focused their attention voting for others, which left her at a deficit. Certainly possible. Chris Daughtry can tell you all about that phenomenon.
But there’s also the possibility she may not have been as heavily favored as it seemed. Sure, she was undoubtedly one of the best singers of the season, but winning this game requires more. Look at contestants Scotty McCreery or James Durbin, both of whom have avoided the bottom three so far. They’re respectable singers, of course, but beyond that they’ve managed to harness their populist appeal and build legions of screaming, rabid fans. Listen to the way the audience goes bonkers every time Seacrest calls one of their names.
Still, it’s hard to imagine anyone voting for Stefano Langone doing a merely decent version of “When A Man Loves A Woman” ahead of Pia. Judging by the look on his face when Pia’s name was called instead of his, even Stefano would agree. Pia, if you’re out there, don’t stress too much over this. Jennifer Hudson exited way early in her season and she’s got an Oscar.
Since Scotty McCreery, James Durbin and Lauren Alaina are the only three to avoid the bottom three so far, signs point to them being the contestants to beat.
Oy. What else is going to happen this season? Will Rebecca Black get a results show performance spot to duet on “Friday” with Josh Groban, accompanied by the Flaming Lips and the cast of So You Think You Can Dance?
Fingers crossed.
Summer Touring Headed For An Upswing

Media Team Musical Chairs
/by Sarah SkatesFrom the top: Jason Owen's position at UMG was filled by Beverly Keel, who hired Dixie Owen. Dixie Owen was replaced at Capitol by Taryn Pray, and Pray's spot at Sony was filled and expanded by Regina Stuve.
As the publicity world turns…
When Jason Owen left his longtime post leading the Universal Music Group Nashville media team in September 2010 to launch an artist management firm, his move set in motion a series of changes among the town’s major label publicity departments. The ripple effect has gone on for months, leading to today’s news that Regina Stuve has joined the Sony media team.
Let’s look at the chain reaction.
When Jason Owen exited UMG, he took with him publicist Kelly Russell, leaving the department short one leader and one team member. Respected journalist and media maven Beverly Keel took Owen’s former post, but by February 2011 the team also lost experienced players Amber Williams and Regina Stuve.
Needing to fill the void in her staff, Keel hired seasoned publicist Dixie Owen (no relation to Jason) away from her post at Capitol Records Nashville.
Dixie Owen’s departure left associate Lori Christian as the leader of Capitol’s media team. But Christian, a one-time Sony staffer, still needed to hire another publicist. She added former Sony colleague Taryn Pray to her department at Capitol.
Pray’s exit left a hole in the Sony publicity team, which led to the hiring of Regina Stuve, albeit with a higher ranking than the one held by Pray.
In fact, the only major label Nashville media team that has remained safely intact throughout this seven-month saga is Warner Music Nashville, under the direction of Tree Paine.
Regina Stuve Joins Sony Media Dept.
/by Sarah SkatesRegina Stuve
Allen Brown, Vice President, Media & Corporate Communications for Sony Music Nashville, announced today (4/8) that longtime music industry exec Regina Stuve has joined the label group as Senior Director, Media.
In her new role, Stuve is the label publicist responsible for the entire RCA Nashville roster of artists, including Sara Evans, Danny Gokey, Jake Owen, Chris Young, and new group Bush Hawg, as well as Columbia Nashville artists Josh Thompson and Joanna Smith.
Stuve most recently held a similar post at Universal Music Group Nashville.
With today’s announcement, Brown offered, “Regina’s experience, professionalism, and amazing spirit have made her one of Nashville’s most respected and best-loved publicists. I could not be more pleased to have this rare opportunity to welcome her to our label family.”
“I am so honored and excited to be part of Sony Music Nashville’s publicity team,” Stuve remarked. “What’s really cool is between Allen Brown, Wes Vause [Sony Music Nashville VP, Media] and I, we have a combined total of 74 years experience in the music industry.”
Stuve most recently held the position of Sr. Director, Artist and Media Relations at Universal Music Group Nashville, where she worked for nearly seven years. Prior to Universal, Stuve spent nine years at Capitol Records Nashville/EMI.
Stuve is on the job now and can be reached at regina.stuve@sonymusic.com.

ACM Awards co-host Blake Shelton also gets the post Awards bump. He debuted his new single “Honey Bee” on the show, and country radio was ready. Other show performers Martina McBride and Dierks Bentley fare well, with McBride’s “Teenage Daughters” moving to No. 27 and Bentley’s “Am I The Only One” jumping to No. 34.
After a short break, Gloriana is back on the chart with an uptempo tune called “Wanna Take You Home,” landing at No. 75. Slightly below the No. 80 threshold is the trio of Randy Houser’s “In God’s Time,” Corey Smith’s “Twenty One” and Jason Aldean’s “Dirt Road Anthem,” which are poised to make a splash in the next week or two.
