Kenny Chesney‘s duet with Grace Potter “You and Tequila,” has been certified platinum. This achievement marks the second single from his platinum-selling Hemingway’s Whiskey album to reach this status; “Somewhere With You” was awarded the same honor last year.

“It’s thrilling to know that Deana Carter and Matraca Berg‘s beautiful song has reached so many people,” Chesney said.

He will hit the road with Tim McGraw for a stadium tour opening June 2 in Tampa, FL. The outing has already sold more than 500,000 tickets.

Chesney is up for two Grammys at this year’s awards, and an impressive nine ACM awards, the most of any artist nominated this year.

Updated Edition of “Encyclopedia of Country Music”

The Second Edition of The Encyclopedia of Country Music was released last week, offering 1200 new and updated entries.

The encyclopedia features new entries on artists who have influenced country music in the years since the original 1998 printing, including Kenny Chesney, the Dixie Chicks, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, Rascal Flatts, Blake Shelton, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban and more.

Other new entries focus on some of the past decade’s most important studio musicians, songwriters and executives. Additionally, the revised edition explores current industry trends such as the digital revolution, the shifting politics of country music, and the impact of American Idol. Other essays cover the literature of country music, the importance of Nashville as a music center, and the colorful stage costumes that have long been a staple of the genre.

The encyclopedia was edited by Paul Kingsbury, editor of the first edition of The Encyclopedia of Country Music, and the Hall’s editor Michael McCall, and Sr. Historian John W. Rumble.

Upon its first publication, The Encyclopedia of Country Music became a reference classic and the definitive source on the genre.

The new 640-page volume includes a foreword by Hall of Fame inductee Vince Gill. From Oxford University Press and the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum, the book retails for $65.00.

The Encyclopedia of Country Music is available at www.countrymusichalloffame.org.

Apple Leads Smartphone Shipments

A recent report from International Data Corporation (IDC) confirms what most plugged-in observers already suspected—smartphone use is exploding. According to the report, Q4 shipments of the connected gadgets grew 54.7% year-over-year worldwide to 157.8 million units. The figures eclipsed IDC’s forecasted 40% increase. Looking at the growth in smartphone shipments on a full-year basis shows similar increases. In 2011 shipments totaled 491.4 million units a jump of 61.3% over 2010, but slightly behind the jump of 75.7% for 2010 compared with 2009.

“By the end of the quarter, one out of every three mobiles phones shipped worldwide was a smartphone,” said Ramon Llamas, senior research analyst with IDC’s Mobile Phone Technology and Trends team. “The launch of Apple’s iPhone 4S played a key role in smartphone growth to capture pent-up demand, and smartphone launches from other vendors also provided a broad selection to meet varying preferences and budgets.”

“So-called ‘hero’ devices, such as Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus and Apple’s iPhone 4S, garner the bulk of the attention heaped on the device type,” said Kevin Restivo, senior research analyst with IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker program. “But a growing number of sub-$250 device offerings, based on the Android operating system, have allowed Google’s hardware partners to grow smartphone volumes and expand the market concurrently.”

Looking at growth by individual vendors shows Apple leading Samsung in Q4 sales, but Samsung retaining the lead on a full year 2011 basis. In Q4 Nokia market share dropped 30.6% and Research In Motion (RIM) dropped 11%. All others increased.

Allthingsd.com writer Ina Fried notes that the dominance of Apple and Samsung is not just affecting the bottom players in the marketplace. The middle size companies are also getting hurt. “Not so long ago, it appeared that the rising tide would lift all smartphone boats,” says Fried. “HTC, in particular, was doubling sales year over year, and its growth seemed unstoppable. But now it appears that the wave is thrashing as many as it is helping. HTC has hit a wall; and plenty of other Android players, including Sony and Motorola, are struggling to keep pace with the leaders.”

Rachel Holder – In Your Arms

In a town full of attractive country singers, it takes a lot for a young female artist to catch the attention of Nashville’s music industry crowd. But that’s exactly what 19-year-old Curb Records artist Rachel Holder is doing, and she’s pleased to present her new single “In Your Arms,” written by Scott Lynch and Billy Aerts, to country radio.

“I’ve already learned that it takes more than a few good songs to make it in Nashville,” says Holder. “These days, I don’t think that there’s any one formula for success, necessarily, but I know you have to have faith in yourself, passion for the music and a serious will to succeed. And great songs!”

Though still in her teens, Rachel’s artistic talent began to mature at an early age. Rachel spent a section of her childhood splitting time between school in Chattanooga and performing theater shows in Pigeon Forge, one of Tennessee’s most popular tourist destinations. By the time she was old enough to drive, she had more than 800 Broadway-style shows on her resume, often performing two or three shows per day to packed houses. With the experience she gained on the small stages of Pigeon Forge, the singer-songwriter decided it was time to make the jump to the big stages of Music City.

As “In Your Arms” arrives at radio, Holder has also completed work on her debut album. She’s a confident young artist with a penchant for performing, and she’s poised for success.

In Your Arms (Rachel Holder) by Blair Vickroy Munday

Photo Spread: Road Trip To See Miranda, Chris, and Jerrod

Sony Music Nashville hosted a road trip Thursday night to Huntsville, AL to catch Miranda Lambert’s On Fire tour with guests Chris Young and Jerrod Niemann.

Offerings included a buffet dinner at The Eaves in Huntsville (a highly recommended stop for anyone traveling to Huntsville), a meet & greet before the show (Miranda-rita’s were flowing), and energy-packed sets by Niemann, Young, and Lambert.

Jerrod Niemann came out strong. There’s no denying that when the first lick of “What Do You Want” drowned the room, the crowd was fully engaged. “Lover, Lover” beckoned the audience into a full chorus sing-along. We also had an interesting discussion of our first names backstage, but I digress.

Chris Young followed with a full assortment of his hits and new material from his latest album, Neon. And it was a real treat for me to pay homage to Young while slow dancing in the audience with his mom, Becky.

Lambert offered a fantastic mix of songs from Four The Record, as well as her past chart toppers. She admitted it had been a tough week—due to the death of a childhood friend, father-in-law, and a beloved pet dog—which only strengthened the connection between her and the crowd. For the last number, she brought the boys back onstage, giving the fans an extra treat. Going to a Lambert concert is like hanging out with a friend and when you leave, you realize why you like her so dang much.

Orbison Enterprises Under New Leadership

Orbison Enterprises is under new leadership following the late 2011 death of Barbara Orbison. Barbara and Roy Orbison’s sons Alex and Roy Jr. have taken the helm and will be directing the family estate, catalog, and publishing companies.

Roy Jr. will be responsible for managing the Roy Orbison estate and catalog. Most recently he and Barbara co-produced the box set Roy Orbison: The Soul of Rock and Roll. Alex will oversee the operation of the Still Working/Orbison Music publishing companies. The company includes songwriters such as Tommy Lee James, Terry McBride, Annie-Rose and Chase Yaklin.

“Orbison Music is stronger than ever,” said Alex. “We have represented an impressive team of songwriters and we’ll continue to expand our roster. I’m looking forward to announcing more new signings in the near future.”

Wesley Orbison, Roy’s son from his first marriage, is focusing on the release of his debut album and his involvement with Orbison Enterprises will be announced later.

In a joint statement, Roy Jr. and Alex said, “Our mother was a respected member of the international music business community. She was passionate about keeping our father’s legacy alive and she was passionate about her ‘family’ of songwriters. We look forward to continuing and further developing her vision in the years ahead.”

Redigi.com Facing Legal Action

New website, redigi.com, which purports to create a marketplace to buy and sell new and previously owned digital files is getting a lot of attention. Unfortunately, it is the type of notoriety that involves courts, lawyers , judges and large legal budgets. The site had barely opened its doors last Fall when the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) sent a cease and desist letter accusing it of copyright infringement. In January, Capitol Records filed a complaint, which it then followed up with a request for a preliminary injunction that would prevent redigi.com from re-selling any of Capitol’s previously purchased music content. Redigi.com filed a request for a summary judgement to dismiss the case. At question is whether redigi.com is protected under the first-sale doctrine which gives people with lawful possession of copyrighted material the right to sell it, an area of the copyright law which remains somewhat undefined with respect to digital files.

Declaration of Redigi head John Ossenmacher in opposition to preliminary injunction motion

Capitol Complaint Against Redigi.com File Jan. 6, 2012

Google also weighed into the discussion last week and submitted an application for permission to file an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief in support of neither party, saying, “While Google takes no position on the ultimate merits of this case, it has a specific and vital interest in the legal doctrines underpinning the ‘cloud computing’ industry. Cloud computing enables users to store and process data remotely, in the ‘cloud’ of networked computer servers connected through the internet to the user’s computer, thus freeing users from the need to keep physical files and process data locally with their own hard drives and powerful computers. The continued vitality of the cloud computing industry—which constituted an estimated $41 billion dollar global market in 2010—depends in large part on a few key legal principles that the preliminary injunction motion implicates… A premature decision on incomplete facts could create unintended uncertainties for the cloud computing industry.”

The court denied Google’s request essentially saying its input was not needed.

ReDigi sells music downloads for 79¢ per song and users get a 20¢ coupon for each song they upload so consumers swapping music actually pay only 59¢ per song after figuring in the coupon discount. “ReDigi is a marketplace that gives users tools to be in compliance with copyright law,” says ReDigi head John Ossenmacher. “Before I put a file up for sale ReDigi says you will need to delete them, and if not it won’t take them.” The company also has plans to resell e-books. According to the web site, “Only tracks purchased from legal download sites such as iTunes, etc. are eligible. Once you buy songs on ReDigi, you can sell them back at any time! Store your music in our FREE cloud. When you’re done listening to them, sell them back with the click of a button.” Also mentioned on the site are payments to artists and labels. “The musician and label get a percentage of every sale, often netting more than they get from a new music site and a lot more than they get from streaming music.” However, numbers are not mentioned.

A ruling from the court is expected soon.
