Nashville Symphony and Musicians Union Ratify New Contract
/by Lorie Hollabaugh“This one-year contract is a stopgap measure that provides a way to keep the music playing in the Schermerhorn at the high artistic level Nashville has come to expect,” Dave Pomeroy, President of the Nashville Musicians Association, said. “These musicians will be working much more for considerably less money, and their collective sacrifice is a testimony to their ongoing commitment to our community. We look forward to working with the Symphony Association towards a mutual goal of restoring NSO salaries to a level commensurate with their world-class talent as soon as possible.”
The contract will go into effect immediately and run through July 31, 2014. The Nashville Symphony’s 2013/14 season will begin as scheduled on Sept. 5-7 with “Russian Spectacular,” featuring music by Mussorgsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich.

Brian Collins – Never Really Left
/by contributorOver the course of his career, Brian has worn many hats in the industry. Not only is he a top notch singer/songwriter and artist, but Brian has also been praised for his talents as a producer, engineer and graphic designer. Brian co-wrote every song on the new album and produced it alongside Mills Logan and Kenny Greenberg.
“I am very proud of this project,” said Brian. “We worked hard to write, record and produce material that captivates me as an artist and person… I think we nailed it.”
Inspiration for Brian’s songwriting comes from many different aspects of his life. In 1985, Brian’s younger sister, Karen Collins, passed away from Leukemia. Brian used his creative and artistic ability to heal the wounds of his family’s tragedy through a song he co-wrote with close friend and Zac Brown Band bass player, John Driskell Hopkins, titled “She Will Ride.” In January of 2013, Karen’s memory became an anthem to find a cure for cancer through the launch of the She Will Ride Foundation. The non-profit, founded by Brian and Blue Light Entertainment, aims at contributing financially to the determination of finding a cure for cancer and leukemia in this generation
Take a cross between Eli Young Band, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, and Marc Broussard—and you have a sound unlike any other—you have something unique. And uniqueness describes Brian in every sense of the word. His honest lyrics capture the heart of every listener while the soulful quality of his voice gives meaningful expression to songs that bend the lines between Country and soul.
Brian’s hard working nature and undeniable talent has led him to share the stage with KISS, Will Hoge, Sister Hazel, James Otto, Colin Hay (of Men At Work), Zac Brown Band, the Smithereens, Marshall Tucker Band, Georgia Satellites, Edwin McCain, Blackberry Smoke, Alabama, Lynyrd Skynyrd and more. The depth of his songwriting and the magnitude of his perspective attest to Brian’s broad appeal and ever-growing fan base, which has led him to play over 150 dates a year.
A Brian Collins show offers a well-rounded, dynamic live performance that engulfs the senses and takes audiences on a notable journey. Most recently he had the privilege of playing on the Alabama & Friends Cruise and is on the bill for The Rock Boat 2015 cruise with Sister Hazel, The Bare Naked Ladies and Michael Franti & the Spearhead.
In 2005, Brian launched “Blue Light Studio” Not only did Brian make his vision of the company into a reality, but he also personally designed all of the recording rooms where he produced/engineered albums and tracks for hard rockers Skid Row, Tony Lucca, The Luchagores, Atlanta based rap artists T.I., Twista and Frank White, as well as acoustic rockers Nic Cowan and Tim O’Donovan. In 2013 Brian partnered with manager and music business developer Santos Vasquez and Belmont graduate Tommy Smith and formed the LLC “Blue Light Entertainment” a booking and publishing company. Since the launch, they have seen National fan recognition through touring and organized the BC Brigade (Brian’s Fan Club).

Metro Proposes First 'Nashville' Investment
/by Eric T. ParkerFor the first time, Mayor Karl Dean’s office officially proposed funds towards the Santa Monica, Calif.-based Music City Productions, the company producing ABC-TV’s Nashville.
As previously reported, Metro plans to invest $500,000 from it’s general fund for the show’s second Season in addition to the state’s $12.5 million investment and the $125,000 boost from each: the Nashville Convention & Visitors Corp. and Metro’s Event Marketing Fund.
In a document made public by the Tennessean, Metro views the prime time production as a tremendous benefit to the citizens of the City and a “once in a generation promotional vehicle and business recruitment tool watched by well over five million Americans each week.” Additionally, Emmy and Golden Globe nominations are cited alongside notes that the show is sold into over 20 major countries across Europe, the UK, Scandinavia, Asia, Australia and Latin America.
Thirty second-commercial slots for the 22-episode second Season are anticipated to fetch over $140,000 while production is estimated to spend over $40 million on resident labor and goods and services in the Tennessee region at over 400 local vendors.
For Season 1, ABC Studios partnered with Ryman Hospitality for 13 episodes, which eventually became a full 22-episode season on ABC. State investment contributed between 25-32 percent of Tennessee-based costs.
The council is expected to hear the Mayor’s resolutions on the Sept. 10 meeting, the Metro Clerk’s office told the Tennessean. Nashville Season 2 premieres Wed., Sept. 25 on ABC.
SoundExchange Sues SiriusXM Over Back Royalty Payments
/by Lorie HollabaughThe underpayments are alleged to amount to between 50 and $100 million or more, and is seeking to recover the monies for the artists and labels it represents.
A copy of the official filing can be seen here: soundexchange.com.
The lawsuit is merely the latest in the battle between the two companies. Last year, according to the Hollywood Reporter, SiriusXM sued Soundexchange over an alleged plan to monopolize copyrights from the recording industry. The satellite radio company wanted to make direct deals with rights holders instead. A separate lawsuit was filed earlier this month against SiriusXM by the Turtles over rights usage of their pre-1972 songs, which are not protected under federal law.
Mayor Announces Outdoor Amphitheater, Parks for Riverfront
/by Jessica NicholsonA sketch of the soon-to-be-built outdoor amphitheater.
Nashville Mayor Karl Dean announced today (Aug. 27) that downtown’s Cumberland River will soon be home to an outdoor amphitheater as part of the West Riverfront Master Plan.
With the repurposing of the Thermal Transfer Plant site, the amphitheater is expected to accommodate 6,500 people (including 2,500 seats, with additional grass seating). The space is envisioned as a “summer amphitheater” for the Nashville symphony and available to residents for daily enjoyment on non-event days. Additionally, the 12-acre area will feature trails, a dog park and gardens.
Across the river on the Cumberland’s east bank, a new riverboat landing green space for tailgating and daily use with moveable chairs and tables, and pedestrian and bike pathways was announced. A lower park will slope to the river for boaters (canoes, kayaks and crew teams) in addition to docking space for the General Jackson with a floating dock for motorized boats. The east bank landing project will be part of approximately $30 million redevelopment that included the Bridge Building and 6-acre Cumberland Park.
In a release from the Mayor’s office, Metro is stated as already owning the property involved on the west and east banks and has funds in place to move forward. Funding for the west bank comes from three previously approved $35 million capital spending plans in addition to $7 million in recently transferred federal flood aid, which will be used to help build the flood wall.
Construction is expected to begin this fall. West bank construction could be significantly completed in 2015.
Last week, a prospective $80 million ballpark on the north side of downtown on the Sulphur Dell site, near Germantown made headlines.
