Jason Aldean brought his Burn It Down tour to the sold-out Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati on Saturday night (July 19). He is the first Country artist to play the ball park and its second ever concert (Paul McCartney was the first). The event also included openers Tyler Farr, Florida Georgia Line and Miranda Lambert. And in between sets, DJ DU spun tunes to keep the party atmosphere bumping.
“As a baseball fan, it means a lot to me to play in stadiums where I used to watch games,” said Aldean during the pre-show press conference. “I’m still in awe, going out there and seeing the amount of people that care about what we are doing. It’s a highlight of my career.”
When asked at what point he felt like he was ready to move up from arenas and amphitheaters to baseball stadiums, Aldean said that the climb started after the success of his singles “Big Green Tractor” and “She’s Country.” “After each of those were released, I noticed that my live crowds were getting a lot bigger,” he explained. He said that led to the first of many discussions between Live Nation and his manager Clarence Spalding about launching a stadium tour.
Aldean also announced his sixth studio album will be available this year on Broken Bow Records and discussed this week’s release of the lead single. “The song is called ‘Burnin’ It Down’ and we played it live for the first time last night (in Cleveland 7/18), we are excited for you all to hear it again tonight,” he said. “This is definitely the steamiest song we’ve ever put out. But it sets the tone for everything. It’s a new sound.”
The song was written by Rodney Clawson, Chris Tompkins, and Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley.  For the new album Aldean re-teamed with longtime producer Michael Knox.
This is the longest Aldean has ever gone between singles, so the singer is anxious to let people hear it. The single is “Burnin’ It Down,” and the tour is called Burn It Down. Aldean agreed that this could be the title of the new album, but couldn’t confirm it. “The single always sets the tone for the album, so we’ll see how it goes. I love the song. It’s something people won’t expect to hear from us, which I like.”
Saturday’s concert started with Tyler Farr putting on a rock filled set including his two No. 1 hits, “Redneck Crazy” and “Whiskey In My Water.” By the time Florida Georgia Line hit the stage, the stadium was near capacity. The duo and their band brought non-stop energy while pumping out hit after hit, as well as covers of Alabama’s “I’m In A Hurry” and pop star Bruno Mars’ “Grenade,” and of course, a stadium-wide sing-a-long during “Cruise.”
Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean have toured together on several occasions since both launched careers around the same time. Lambert confidently strutted around the stage showing off her new short hair cut, Rock and Roll t-shirt, leather shorts and boots. She acknowledged Aldean and their growth in the industry together and thanked him for including her on the show. Even though she was guest on the tour, Lambert proved why she is one of the biggest stars in the format. With the capacity crowd singing along as she belted her biggest hits, she also tapped into fans’ emotions with heartstring-tugging songs “The House That Built Me” and “Over You.”
Before Aldean took the stage, DJ DU kept the crowd singing and dancing as he mixed hits from all genres, including “Hang On Sloopy,” a favorite among Ohio State fans. The roar of the crowd as each song began showed that Aldean had attracted Cincinnati’s true party crowd.
Aldean’s show started with a big screen video montage of things being set on fire. The pyro then exploded as a giant “A” lit up the stage and Aldean ascended from the top wearing a cut off T-shirt bearing the name of the host city, his signature cowboy hat and jeans, while singing his first ever single, “Hicktown.” His energy didn’t slow as he continued to keep the crowd on their feet with his hits. The one exception is when he took time to bring his steel guitar player to the front of the stage and toast his birthday. The night ended with a one song encore of “She’s Country” and a full fireworks show over the Ohio River.
After two nights playing baseball stadiums in Ohio, the tour will also play the home of the Washington Nationals, The Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies.

Reba released a new song and video, titled “Pray for Peace.” She posted the video on her official Facebook page and is giving the song away free on her website.
Among the celebrities supporting the initiative by recording their own videos or spreading the word via their social media sites are Keith Urban and Nicole KidmanAmy Grant, Jamie Lynn Spears, The Band Perry, Montgomery Gentry, Melissa Peterman, Kristian Bush, Krystal Keith, Craig Morgan and Kelleigh Bannen. Search Twitter for #prayforpeace.

Reba shared on Facebook: The idea to write the song “Pray For Peace” came to me last year as I was walking on our place in Gallatin, Tn. For days I’d sing, “Pray for Peace”, over and over. It wasn’t until several months later did the other parts start to fall in place. Some, not until we got into the studio to record it.
I feel this song is a gift from God. I have never worked on a song as long as this one. It went from a bass drum, fiddle and singers to guest artist singing with me, adding more instruments and even a choir and a bagpipe!
It’s an act of perseverance, prayer, hope, fellowship and mostly love.

'L.A. Times' Reports on Country's Global Expansion

la_timesBy: Laura Hostelley
This past Saturday (July 19), LA Times reporter Randy Lewis delved into the topic of Country music’s global expansion. Artists such as Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift were featured as having a major impact on audiences abroad, and bringing the American spirit with them.

Blue Smoke – The Best Of is officially Gold in the UK, which is a massive achievement for Dolly Parton and the team,”

Dolly Parton’s new album, Blue Smoke–The Best Of, was recently certified Gold in the UK.

In 2000, Paisley tells the LA Times, the reception he and his band received overseas was far less welcoming than when they played stateside. But Country’s appeal grew substantially since then. In 2010 he played two sold-out shows in London, and the next year sold 10,000 tickets at London’s O2 Arena. Aligning with the trend, 15 of the 100 highest grossing tours worldwide were Country acts in 2013 (Pollstar).
“The Internet has been a huge help,” noted Scott Borchetta, to the Times. “Whether it was the first time we took The Band Perry over or the first time we took Taylor [Swift], there was already an awareness by a small group of super fans. That never would have happened pre-Internet.”
Although today’s Country artists often use traditional instruments, such as steel guitars and banjos, they have maintained a pop-like sound, noted Lewis. Cross-over artists such as Swift have contributed to the success of Country outside North America.
Mainstay artists such as Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks are experiencing global success too. Parton played to an estimated 150,000 people on June 29 at the Glastonbury Festival in Britain, and Brooks’ comeback was initially planned for Dublin, Ireland, but was cancelled due to permit issues.

Country-music journalist Lydia Dixon Harden passed away last week at age 55.

During the 1980s and 1990s, she profiled hundreds of Country celebrities in the pages of the fan publication Music City News. She rose to become the monthly magazine’s managing editor.

At the time, Music City News was country music’s most prominent fan periodical. It published continuously between 1963 and 2000. The magazine began giving annual awards in 1967, and these were nationally televised in 1978-1999.

Lydia Dixon Harden was also the co-author of the books The Stars of Country Music: The Legends and the New Breed (1996), New Country Stars (1993) and The Stars of Country Music (1994). She wrote essays for the program books for the Academy of Country Music Awards and penned one of the Dolly Parton biographies.

In recent years, the Tennessee Tech University alumna worked for Windsor Health Care. Lydia Dixon Harden died on July 15.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Tim Harden, by daughter Claire Harden, by brother David Dixon and by sisters Donna Dixon, Sue Ellen Weaver, Janet Hopkins and Amy Becktell.

Highlights Of Summer NAMM's Largest Show In Six Years

NAMMNAMM members rolled into Nashville’s Music City Center July 17-19 finding the largest Summer NAMM in six years.
“NAMM members who attended Summer NAMM are leaving Nashville with a competitive edge to succeed in the second half of the year,” said Joe Lamond, President and CEO of NAMM. “We are grateful to the members who shared their paths to success with their peers during breakfast sessions and the Top 100 Dealers Awards. Together we will continue to strengthen our industry.”
This year’s Summer NAMM featured the most exhibitors since 2006. When the show opened on Thursday (July 17), 438 exhibitors representing 1,510 brands debuted new products. An increase in exhibiting companies expanded the show to two full halls, 25 percent larger than the footprint of last year’s Summer NAMM.
Adding to the convention were 103 new-to-Summer NAMM companies including Hang Over Guitar Straps, Blakhart Guitar Company, and Emerson Custom Guitars. Another 112 companies including Pearl Corporation, KHS, and Orange Amplifiers returned to the showroom after a hiatus. The number of buyers attending Summer NAMM increased 5 percent over 2013, which saw an 8 percent increase over 2012. In total 12,442 people registered for the event.

Leading retailers from Japan, Venezuela, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, and exhibitors from 12 countries including China, Sweden, and Germany added to the global business opportunities at Summer NAMM. Overall international attendance increased 19 percent over last year’s event.

Similar to January’s NAMM Show, the exhibitor mix reflected the full spectrum of music products including woodwinds, percussion, pro audio, recording, publishers and as to be expected in Nashville, a strong showing of fretted string instruments. Pro audio and technology driven exhibitors grew 23 percent, filling up much of the expanded floor space.
Perennially popular acoustic string instruments remain one of Summer NAMM’s star attractions. Attendees crowded C.F. Martin & Co., Taylor Guitars, Gibson Brands, Cordoba Guitars, Deering Banjos, Eastman Guitars, Breedlove, Bedell and Weber Acoustic Instruments to strum the latest instruments. Just off the show floor, NAMM’s new Acoustic Nation stage featured acoustic performances by dozens of artists including Greg Bates, Jonathan Jackson and Enation, The Ukedelics and more.
“Insight,” Wednesday night’s pre-show opening party featured country music icon Vince Gill, his band The Players, and Two Old Hippies’ founder Tom Bedell. They combined musical performances and a lively discussion on the relationship between musicians and their musical instruments.
The world’s best retailers packed Davidson Ballroom Friday night for the Top 100 Dealer Awards. The industry celebrated excellence and innovation as host Ira Dean of the Country trio Trick Pony awarded trophies in eight ‘Best Of’ categories. Enlisting flourishing forward thinkers of music retail, NAMM U’s breakfast and Idea Center sessions tutored attendees on making the most of the industry’s current opportunities.

Weekend Round-Up

Blake Shelton played a sold-out stadium show at Chicago’s Wrigley Field over the weekend, topping out capacity with over 40,000 fans in attendance. Shelton is only the fourth country artist to have appeared at the 100-year-old ballpark. Currently on his Ten Times Crazier Tour 2014, Saturday night (July 19) Shelton hosted opening acts The Band Perry, Dan + Shay and Neal McCoy. The outing also includes sold-out shows August 1 at NYC’s Madison Square Garden and October 4 at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl. Shelton recently celebrated his 12th consecutive No. 1 single, “My Eyes,” which is his 17th No. 1 overall.
