2017 Production Music Conference Concludes with Record Attendance

The Production Music Association (PMA), the leading advocate and voice of the global production music community, recently concluded its 2017 Production Music Conference which drew over 600 attendees from all areas of the music industry. The event was held Oct. 4-6 at the Hollywood Loews Hotel.
Conference attendees enjoyed the third annual Mark Awards event on Oct. 4, as well as keynote speeches from David Israelite, president and CEO of NMPA, and film composer Mychael Danna. A total of sixteen unique industry panels were presented during the three-day conference, including “Production Music is the Record Industry,” “How Big Data Can Double Your Income,” “Writing a Production Music Hit,” and “Trailerizing Your Music.”
Three renowned music industry executives were honored at this year’s Mark Awards: Romano Di Bari of Italy’s Flipper Music received the “Hall of Fame Award,” Alison Smith of BMI received the “Ambassador Award,” and Dr. Lynne Lummel, formerly with ASCAP, received the “Visionary Award.”
Adam Taylor, chairman of the PMA and president of APM Music said, “We were delighted with the turnout for this year’s conference. Our panelists and guest speakers were top notch and presented not only compelling and intriguing topics, but also offered practical advice to our members as to where the future of our production music industry is heading, and the hurdles we all must face together as we move further into the digital age.”

Dierks Bentley Brings ‘Only The Brave’ Screening To Nashville

Nashville first responders, actors and music industry were among the invited guests to the advance screening of Only The Brave, a film based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshot firefighting operation.
Arizona native Dierks Bentley penned and performed an oroginal song, “Hold The Light,” for the project.
“My involvement with this story began back when this tragic fire happened,” said Bentley. “We heard about it and I worked with my manager, Mary Hilliard, and we decided to play some music in Prescott, [Arizona] about three weeks after this fire in hopes of raising money and spirits—just doing what we do as musicians. It had a profound impact on me and where I first met [original Hotshot] Brendan McDonough and some other folks in the community.
“I was so lucky a few years later to sit in a movie next to director Joe Kosinski and I think it was Mike Mitchell and they offered me the opportunity to be part of writing a song.”
Bentley finished “Hold The Light” with Jon Randall after being started from the pens of Sean [S.] Carey and Joe Trapanese. Bentley recorded the song in the studio in Nashville with many of his bandmates and producer and songwriter Ross Copperman.
“The movie and song is not only about honoring these 19 guys and their families, but goes beyond that—certainly in the country music community with Las Vegas,” concluded Bentley. “It is a timely movie about first responders, who are brave enough to head towards danger when the rest of us are trying to head away.”
Only the Brave will hit theaters Oct. 20.

Chris Stapleton Announces ‘From A Room: Volume 2,’ Following His Best-Selling Albums Of 2017
/by Eric T. ParkerAs Chris Stapleton’s All-American Road Show continues to stampede across the country, the Grammy, CMA and ACM Award-winning musician is prepping the second volume part to his sophomore Mercury Records Nashville project.
From A Room: Volume 2 will be released Dec. 1 and is now available to pre-order digitally and with exclusive limited-edition bundles.
The forthcoming album takes its name from Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A (the capital “A” in “From A Room”) where it was recorded over the last year, again with producer/guitarist Dave Cobb. Wife, Morgane Stapleton is naturally featured on harmony vocals alongside longtime band-members J.T. Cure (bass) and Derek Mixon (drums).
In addition to seven songs co-written by Stapleton, the album features versions of Kevin Welch’s “Millionaire” and the Homer Banks/Lester Snell-penned song made famous by Pops Staples, “Friendship.” Select co-writers featured on the project include Kendell Marvel, Brice Long, Matt Fleener, Mike Henderson, Jaron Boyer, Darrell Hayes and Jameson Clark.
Stapleton’s Volume one is now Gold-certified after debuting at No. 1, remaining the best-selling country album of 2017. His 2015 double-Platinum solo debut, Traveller, is currently the No. 2 best-selling country album of the year. Stapleton is the CMA’s reigning Male Vocalist of the Year and is nominated this year in the same category along with Entertainer of the Year and Album of the Year (From A Room: Volume 1).
In addition to the mostly sold-out All-American Road Show dates, Stapleton will perform as part of the All In For The Gambler: Kenny Rogers Farewell Concert on October 25 in Nashville and will join fellow country performers for the Country Rising benefit concert on November 12 in Nashville. IEBA Agents Power Panel Touches On Fan Attention Span, Data And Agency Structure

The International Entertainment Buyers Association (IEBA) conference is underway at the Omni Nashville Hotel.
On Monday (Oct. 16), IEBA hosted its Agents Power Panel with recent Nashville transplant Brian Manning (CAA – Demi Lovato, Meghan Trainor, Penatonix), Pete Pappalardo (AGI – Hall and Oats, Megadeath, Kidsbop), Sam Hunt (Paradigm – Major Lazer, xx, Run the Jewels) and another recent Nashville transplant who replaced Rob Beckham in the panel, Seth Siegle (WME – Gary Clark Jr., Kaleo, Amos Lee). Jamie Loeb of Nederlander Concerts moderated.
The panel touched on how the touring industry has changed, with artists moving in and out of public consciousness faster than ever before.
“Ultimately we sign with our gut, but it’s about connectivity,” said Manning. “Regardless from streaming, views, spins, etc. people need to have songs, connect with the audience and keep that connection from one tour to the next. To me, data is interesting, but it sometimes follows, rather than informing a trajectory.”
“It is amazing how the very lowest level of bands can be discovered,” echoed Manning. “[My 13 year old daughter] was texting me this morning about a new artist. She has pointed out 15 different artists to me over time. It’s so fast moving — she’s in and out of artists within a week.”
“A week?!” replied Loeb. “That is mind-numbingly depressing.”
“Especially to think when you’re booking festivals 13-14 months in advance,” quipped Hunt. “The most powerful people in the music industry are the children of festival buyers.”
The panel also touched on the advantage and disadvantages of territorial agents and data points.
For Pappalardo, it comes down to an artist delivering a quality show to expand a fan base.
“Everybody has the ability to put music out and get views on YouTube, but unless there’s a quality show, it doesn’t really translate or matter in the touring cycle,” Pappalardo remarked.
“Nobody signs and retains clients without having a personal relationship with them and caring about what they do,” said Manning.
Grand Ole Opry House To Receive $12 Million In Upgrades
/by Jessica NicholsonRyman Hospitality will invest $12 million in upgrades for the Grand Ole Opry House, include additional parking, larger retail space, and upgrades to its backstage tour experience.
With more than 650,000 attendees in 2016 (the Grand Ole Opry had 150,000 visitors in 2012), The Grand Ole Opry will soon have an additional 1,300 parking spaces on undeveloped land just north of the Grand Ole Opry house. The renovations will also include a 5,000-square-foot retail footprint with additional beverage and food options, including food trucks.
Also there we will be a redesigned box office, a VIP lounge area with a backstage tour theater.
Construction for the retail expansion is expected to begin in January of 2018 and is anticipated to be complete by October of 2018. The additional parking spaces are scheduled for summer 2018. The VIP lounge and relocated box office area is expected to be complete in January of 2019. The Opry House will host a full calendar of events and daily tours during construction.

The Grand Ole Opry upgrades follow a string of investments Ryman Hospitality has made in its Nashville properties, including a $14 million investment on an expansion for the Ryman Auditorium in 2015, including the opening of Cafe Lula, as well as the $8.6 million investment in the Wildhorse Saloon in 2016 and the announcement of Blake Shelton’s upcoming Ole Red entertainment venue set to open next year on Nashville’s Lower Broadway.
Country Music Hall Of Fame And Museum’s Artist-In-Residence Returns For 2017 With Jason Isbell
/by Jessica NicholsonJason Isbell will be artist-in-residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum for 2017. He will present three performances in the museum’s CMA Theater on Dec. 5, 12 and 19, at 7 p.m.
Isbell has won Grammys for Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Song. The Americana Music Association named him Artist of the Year in 2015 and has awarded him Album of the Year two times and Song of the Year honors three times. Master songwriter John Prine, a key influence on Isbell, told the Nashville Scene, “I just feel proud that Jason is writing and putting out the kind of music he is.”
After working in the early 2000s as a member of Drive-By Truckers, Isbell left the band in 2007. The Alabama native has recorded six albums under his own name and with his band, the 400 Unit. His latest, The Nashville Sound, is nominated for Album of the Year at this year’s CMA Awards.
“Jason is a tremendously accomplished performer whose songwriting skills have set him on a path to join the lofty ranks of writing legends like Kristofferson and Prine,” said museum CEO Kyle Young. “He will be our fourteenth artist-in-residence, and also our youngest, but the stellar work that he has done already in his career proves that he belongs in such august company. We are thrilled to welcome him for what will be three unforgettable performances. It is a bonus that he takes the stage while he is featured in the museum’s exhibit American Currents: The Music of 2016.”
After taking a break last year to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Bob Dylan’s masterpiece album Blonde on Blonde with two sold-out concerts by Old Crow Medicine Show, the artist-in-residence series returns in 2017. The Artist-In-Residence was launched in 2003, and has included Cowboy Jack Clement, Earl Scruggs, Tom T. Hall, Guy Clark, Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Douglas, Vince Gill, Buddy Miller, Connie Smith, Kenny Rogers, Ricky Skaggs, Alan Jackson and 2015 artist-in-residence Rosanne Cash.
Ticket prices for each show range from $49.50 to $85.50 (plus ticketing fees). Ticket sales are limited to four tickets per transaction on a first come, first served basis and are non-refundable. Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. CDT on Friday, Oct. 27, and can be purchased at countrymusichalloffame.org/air-2017.
Old Dominion To Launch Happy Endings Tour In February
/by Lorie HollabaughOld Dominion is kicking off 2018 with a brand new tour, the Happy Endings Tour, which launches Feb. 1 in Canada. Michael Ray and Brandon Lay are set to open the U.S. dates, while new Canadian country groups The Washboard Union and Cold Creek County will open the Canadian run.
“We are taking OD WORLDWIDE! We can’t wait to get out there and see what kind of Old Dominion fans we have around the world,” said Old Dominion frontman Matthew Ramsey. “It’s amazing when we hear from our fans out there – so we couldn’t be more excited to bring our music to them face to face.”
The band released their sophomore album Happy Endings earlier this year which includes their current single “Written in The Sand” and the chart-topper “No Such Thing As a Broken Heart.” They are currently a special guest on select dates with Thomas Rhett’s Home Team Tour across the US and UK and this past summer performed in front of two sold-out crowds at Gillette Stadium opening for Kenny Chesney. They also wrapped a successful national Bud Light Dive Bar concert series that hit select cities across the US. By the end of the year, they will have played over 145 shows in front of 1.3+ million fans.

SMACKSongs celebrated its first writers’ night at the Listening Room Café in Nashville last Wednesday (Oct. 11). The round was hosted by SMACKSongs partners, Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, and featured surprise performances by Walker Hayes and Midland.
Other performers included SMACKSongs writers Ryan Beaver, Renee Blair, Aaron Eshuis, Kylie Morgan, and Matt McGinn. Presented by Kobalt, the evening was part of the company’s week-long Global Creative Retreat in Nashville.

The October installment of ASCAP’s long-running showcase series at The Bluebird Cafe was held last Wednesday (Oct. 11) and featured Shane Gamble, Sea Gayle’s Jeb Gipson, Carnival Music’s Hailey Whitters and Curb Music Publishing’s Josh Matheny, who is a member of the band Steel Union.
Chris Janson, Keith Urban’s Grand Ole Opry Surprise

Warner Bros./Warner Music Nashville’s Chris Janson joined Keith Urban for two surprise performances at the Grand Ole Opry last Tuesday night (Oct. 10).
Urban welcomed Janson to the legendary stage by declaring, “If there’s justice, in one year he’s going to be Entertainer of the Year,” before launching into their guitar-drenched and harmonica-infused take on the John Michael Montgomery hit “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident).”

BMG and BBR Music Group celebrated a strong presence at this year’s Country Music Week (Oct. 2-8) in the UK, launching with a special live event at London’s Bush Hall. Broken Bow Records Presents showcased Randy Houser, Lindsay Ell, and Walker McGuire (comprised of Jordan Walker and Johnny McGuire).

The 5th Annual Chic Awearness event was held on Monday, Sept. 25 at Nashville restaurant Prima and raised over $100,000 to benefit the T. J. Martell Foundation’s ovarian cancer research program.
Hosted by NewsChannel 5’s Carrie Sharp, event highlights included a moving survivor speech, an exciting live auction and a spirited fall fashion show by Levy’s.
