The decisions were made before I ever typed a word.
All I had to see in my listening stack was the phrase “Luke Combs & Eric Church,” and I knew what the Disc of the Day would be. They didn’t disappoint. The song is a country masterpiece.
The advance hype on Randall King also made me predisposed toward him. He didn’t disappoint, either, although his phrasing is uncomfortably close to established superstar Strait. Give the boy a DisCovery Award.
RANDALL KING/Hey Cowgirl

DELLA MAE/First Song Dancer
Writers: Celia Woodsmith/Kimber Ludiker; Producer: Dan Knobler; Publisher: none listed; Rounder

ELEVEN HUNDRED SPRINGS/This Morning It Was Too Late
Writers: Matt Hillyer/Chad Rueffer; Producers: Steven Berg/Matt Hillyer/Chad Rueffer; Publishers: Canton Street/Cricket Lips, ASCAP/BMI; State Fair (track)
– Deliciously country. His remorseful heartbroken tenor vocal, the sighing steel, poetic guitar solo, bounced-bow fiddle and smoky honky-tonk atmosphere are all exquisite. This swirled around my head like a dream. Thank you, Texas. Thank you.
LUKE COMBS & ERIC CHURCH/Does To Me
Writers: Luke Combs/Ray Fulcher/Tyler Reeve; Producer: Scott Moffatt; Publishers: Big Machine/50 Egg/Straight Dimes/Larkin Hill/Works of RHA/I Know Songs/Warner-Tamerlane/BMI; River House/Columbia (track)
– I’m in heaven. Two of my ultimate favorites, together on disc. Not only that, the lyric is the heart-tugging testimony of a blue-collar average joe’s little victories and soul enrichers. Make this a Song of the Year, No. 1 smash and I just might believe in country music again.
CROSS ATLANTIC/Everybody’s Looking For Love

Parker McCollum Thrills Fans at Sold-Out Exit/In Show

Parker McCollum
Fans and industry guests packed Nashville’s Exit/In Thursday night (Jan. 30) for a performance by up-and-coming country artist Parker McCollum. The rising star is headlining his own tour, as well as opening select dates for Miranda Lambert. For his Nashville show, McCollum welcomed Kylie Morgan as opener.
“Thank y’all for loving on country music tonight. It’s our first time selling out Exit/In,” he said, the legendary club’s neon logo glowing above his head.
With the recent release of his first major label single, “Pretty Heart,” McCollum might not be standing in a club spotlight much longer, with his career trajectory headed toward bigger venues. Built over the last seven years, the Austin-based artist’s heavy touring inspires an enviable level of fan devotion—one group said it was their sixth show—and many others traveled from out of state.
These fans were treated to promising new music from his upcoming UMG Nashville project, including “Pretty Heart,” co-written with Randy Montana, and produced by Jon Randall. It’s McCollum’s latest take on heartbreak, a common thread tying together an evolving sound that grows more refined with each album.
McCollum’s 2015 full-length debut The Limestone Kid resulted in the breakout regional hit “Meet You In The Middle.” Two years later he followed that with the more polished Lloyd Maines-produced Probably Wrong. Along the way, McCollum’s exceptional songwriting has remained rooted in Texas traditionalism, accentuated with influences including John Mayer and Ryan Adams. Similar to those artists, McCollum’s music has an attractive vulnerability missing from many of today’s country males. It seems The Limestone Kid is always leaving or being left, seeking redemption and trying to do better next time.
The troubadour told the crowd that he wrote his popular song “Hell Of A Year,” while sitting in his truck in a Whataburger parking lot. Throughout the night, his set veered between lonesome ballads (“Silhouette,” “High Above The Water,” “I Can’t Breathe”) and uptempo rollicks (“Meet You In the Middle,” “Lonesome Ten Miles”), giving a fantastic preview of an artist poised for a hell of a year.

Florida Georgia Line Leaves Big Loud
/by Jessica NicholsonFlorida Georgia Line has parted ways with managers Seth England and Kevin “Chief” Zaruk of Big Loud, after nine years.
FGL first signed with Big Loud Publishing in 2011 and in 2012, released the breakthrough single “Cruise,” which is now 11x Platinum and the best-selling digital country single of all time.
“It has been an incredible journey with our Big Loud family and we are so thankful for the last nine years. Together we’ve grown more than we could have ever imagined due to what we all bring to the table. As we continue to evolve, so do our needs and our team. Although bittersweet, we and Big Loud are excited to support and encourage each other as we enter the next chapter of our careers, and welcome a new family into our world with open arms. We will continue to dream big and push ourselves to be the best we can be in all facets of life. We are just getting started,” said FGL’s Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley.
“We can’t say enough how much love we have for both BK and T-Hubb. We have achieved more in nine years than any of us could have ever dreamed. We’re really proud of almost a decade full of record-breaking success with the two young kids we met in 2011. Today we find a safe place to unwind our business relationship in order to preserve the lifelong friendships and memories we have made together. Good luck to BK and T-Hubb in their future endeavors. Big Loud Proud,” said Seth England, Craig Wiseman, Joey Moi and Chief Zaruk, partners at Big Loud.
Dierks Bentley’s ’90s-Inspired Group Hot Country Knights Welcomes Travis Tritt For Debut Single
/by Jessica NicholsonHot Country Knights
Dierks Bentley and his Hot Country Knights co-horts recently inked a deal with Bentley’s label home UMG Nashville, and last week, they announced their debut single, “Pick Her Up.”
The track features ’90s country hitmaker Travis Tritt, and is the first release from the band’s upcoming album, due to release later this year. The track was written by Bentley alongside Jim Beavers and Brett Beavers. The song impacts country radio on Feb. 3.
“The sound behind ‘Pick Her Up’ is Hot Country Knights 101…it’s so hot that I have advised the radio promotion department at UMG to wear oven mitts when delivering it to country radio,” said lead singer Doug Douglason, Bentley’s alter ego. “Travis is an old buddy of ours…we go way back and everybody knows when you need a hit…you call Tritt. We appreciate his support and all our friends in the biz that are coming together right now to help us finally get our shot.”
The band even enlisted actress Tiffani Thiessen for the music video, who portrayed Kelly Kapowski on the hit ’90s sitcom Saved By The Bell.

/by Jessica NicholsonSymphonic Distribution has entered the physical distribution market via a partnership with AMPED. The partnership will offer clients physical distribution of vinyl, CDs, and cassettes in North America and beyond.
Symphonic’s physical distribution operation is helmed by Kevin Hopper, the longtime veteran of TVT Records, The Orchard, and Rykodisc, and Nick Gordon, a veteran of Caroline Distribution and The Orchard.
The two were previously responsible for building The Orchard’s physical distribution offering out of the ashes of TVT, and are no strangers to adding physical services to a digital-native company. Symphonic’s physical distribution veterans also include Randall Foster (Naxos), Michael Burrows (Caroline, Universal), and Jakub Alexander (Ghostly).
“Offering physical distribution is a natural extension of Symphonic’s comprehensive digital music and video distribution offering and artist services arsenal,” says Gordon, Symphonic’s Chief Client Officer. “What’s more, we’re glad to help labels get their products into stores during what has been a stressful time in the physical distribution and retail business. Indie music distribution and marketing company Symphonic Distribution was founded by Jorge Brea in 2006; the company is headquartered in Tampa, Florida, with offices in Nashville, Brooklyn and Bogota, Columbia. Symphonic has worked with label and artists including Nick Murphy, deadmau5, Daddy Yankee, Rowdy Records, Ozuna and more.
Lilly Hiatt Announces New Album, Tour Dates
/by Lorie HollabaughLilly Hiatt‘s brand new album, Walking Proof, is set to release on March 27 on New West Records. The project includes some special guests, including Amanda Shires, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Luke Schneider, and Lilly’s father, legendary singer-songwriter John Hiatt. John’s appearance on “Some Kind Of Drug” marks the first time the pair have appeared together on one of her records.
The 11-song set was produced by former Cage The Elephant member Lincoln Parish, and is the followup to her breakthrough project Trinity Lane. She found inspiration for the album after some time off the road facing some difficult personal challenges and hurdles, yet coming out the other side stronger and triumphant. “When I got that little gap in my schedule, it gave me the chance to appreciate some mental stillness,” she explained. “I can be a pretty anxious person, but I found a sense of peace by deconstructing all of these interactions and emotions I’d experienced and reconfiguring them into songs. It helped me make sense of everything and learn to relax.”
Walking Proof will be available on CD, across digital platforms, and on standard black vinyl. A Limited Edition Translucent Turquoise Vinyl Pressing featuring a Black & White 12×12 insert of the cover artwork will be available at independent retailers, and a limited edition autographed by Hiatt featuring a one-of-a-kind random colored vinyl, a black and white 12×12 cover artwork insert, and a box of colored pencils is available for pre-order now via New West Records.
Hiatt has also announced initial tour dates in support of Walking Proof, which will launch April 2nd in Atlanta and visit 35 cities through July 18th including a date in Nashville April 18th at the Basement East.
