Soundstripe Names Jay Harren As VP of Music

Jay Harren

Production music company Soundstripe has hired Jay Harren as VP of Music. Harren will be based in Soundstripe’s Nashville office and will direct the daily operations of Soundstripe’s Music Division, including developing and implementing strategy, managing label operations, and maximizing revenue from the company’s growing and diverse catalog via streaming, publishing, and sync opportunities.

Harren’s career began in 2000 at Atlanta’s alternative radio station 99X/WNNX, where he was Music Director as well as founder and host of the acclaimed new-music discovery program “Sunday School.” In May of 2006, he left to become A&R Manager at Columbia Records in New York, where he signed the critically and commercially successful band Manchester Orchestra as well as current country star Cassadee Pope, who performed with the band Hey Monday at the time.

In June 2012, Harren became Vice President of A&R and Artist Development at Descendant Records, a boutique-style label Sony Music Entertainment tasked him to launch and run. The label, which was home to The Lone Bellow and Colony House among others, took a forward-thinking approach by integrating Sony’s independent distribution and label-services arm, RED Music (now The Orchard), exclusively for all its artists. This allowed for a tailor-made approach to marketing and promotion for each individual project.

In 2018, Harren left the recorded music side of the industry to become Head of Music Partnerships at ticketing giant StubHub, where he led a team focused on music partners in North America. Now, in addition to his role at Soundstripe, Harren is an adjunct professor at Belmont University’s Mike Curb College of Music Business, teaching the class Entertainment in New York.

“Jay has an amazing track record in the music industry and a reputation for innovation,” said Micah Sannan, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Soundstripe. “His incredible taste in music, eye for lucrative partnerships, and experience managing vast music industry teams make him the perfect choice to take our Music Division to the next level.”

“I’m so excited to be a part of a forward-thinking music company that truly embraces artist-friendly values and smart business practices,” said Harren. “When I became aware of Soundstripe and their vision for the future of the music business as well as their core values, I instantly knew that I wanted to be a part of the team there, and I’m so grateful that it’s actually happening!”

Lindsay Ell Launches New Movement Inspired By Personal New Revelatory Song ‘Make You’

Lindsay Ell. Photo: Jeremy Cowart

Lindsay Ell is exploring some deeply personal experiences and opening up like never before on her new song “make you,” which is out now digitally and appears on her forthcoming sophomore album heart theory, set for release Aug. 14. Ell is releasing “make you” on Global Forgiveness Day, further amplifying her belief that all types of forgiveness – including self-forgiveness – is vital to healing.

Co-written by Ell and Brandy Clark, “make you” is the first time Ell publicly addresses being a survivor of sexual violence. The song finds Ell intimately exploring the effects on her life after being raped at 13, and a second time at 21. Her new project addresses the seven stages of grief and reflects Ell’s determination to use her platform to help other sexual trauma survivors.

“Three years ago at a visit to help launch the music program at Youth For Tomorrow, I sat down in a conference room with a few girls aged 12-18 who had all been victims of rape or sex trafficking,” recalls Ell of the point she knew she she couldn’t keep her own experience hidden any longer. “I shared my story, they shared their stories, and I was so inspired. Walking out of that room that day I knew the time had come to share my story more widely, otherwise I would be denying myself an opportunity to connect and help other girls or boys, like those in that room. It’s a very difficult thing to do, but an incredibly necessary thing to talk about. We don’t realize how much this stuff is happening in our own community, and that is partly due to not discussing it.”

In conjunction with the release of “make you,” Ell has launched the Make You Movement, a charitable fund whose mission is to help organizations that support at-risk youth, domestic abuse and sexual assault survivors by provided funds on an as-needed basis. Ell has committed to donate all her proceeds from “make you” to the Make You Movement. The first partner organization receiving funds from Make You Movement will be The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, which is the United States’ largest anti-sexual violence organization.

Following Monday morning’s news of the death of country music legend Charlie Daniels, the country music community began sharing their thoughts and memories of the fiery fiddle player, passionate vocalist and relentless entertainer.

“Charlie Daniels was an incredible musician, entertainer and friend. I was thrilled to get to know him on the road and in the studio throughout our careers. He will always be remembered as a patriot, and a faith-filled Christian above all else.” – Jerry Lee Lewis, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member

“Charlie Daniels was one of the finest gentlemen I have ever known. He and Hazel have been two of my and Mary’s dearest friends over the past years. We laughed, cried and prayed together. Not only was he a gift to us, but to the entire world. A few years ago, Charlie had a colt born on my birthday and named him after me. The memories go on and on, so I’ll leave it at this—Charlie, thank you for everything you’ve done for me, your endless support of us, your unconditional love, and the sweet memories. It is my greatest honor to be your Country Music Hall of Fame classmate—you will live on forever as my hero… my friend. I love you.” – Randy Travis, Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member

“Charlie’s been like a brother to me since the early ‘70s. He’s one of the greatest, kindest people I’d ever met in my life. Not only Charlie—but he surrounded himself with incredible people that I love, especially his wife Hazel. We did a duet of a song Charlie wrote called ‘Willie Jones’ and it was one of the most fun studio sessions I’ve been in. I’ve always loved playing Volunteer Jams through the years—I will miss my dear friend.” – Bobby Bare, Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member

Exit 216 Set To Debut New Single, "Brother"

Newly formed duo, Exit 216, comprised of Steven Battey and Cole Burkett, are releasing a new single, “Brother,” on July 17.

Produced by David Mescon and co-written by Battey, Mescon, and Drake White, the duo’s timely new single offers an inspirational message. A video for “Brother” was filmed in Smyrna, Tennessee, and will be released on July 17.

“There will be people that do not look like you, nor are they from the same family; however, we can all connect through life in many other ways,” said Battey. “I hope that listeners will have a positive take away from this song, and are led to make a friend or be the change for a better future.”

Burkett adds, “The idea is that you can come together and find common ground with anybody as long as you put in the effort.  You might even be surprised to find that you have a lot more in common than not.”

Battey is the writer behind hits like “One Number Away” by Luke Combs, “Revolver” by Madonna, and “Eenie Meenie” by Justin Bieber.
