Michael Feinstein Collides George Gershwin & Country On New Collaboration Project

Classic Gershwin standards are getting the country treatment on a brand new album, Gershwin Country, due out March 11 through Craft Recordings, with a portion of all proceeds benefitting MusiCares.

Spearheaded by Michael Feinstein and executive produced by Liza Minelli, the collaborative project reimagines the classic songs of George and Ira Gershwin through a country lens and pairs Feinstein with some of the biggest names in country music, including Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss, and Brad Paisley.

Fans can stream the advance single, “Someone to Watch Over Me,” featuring Alison Krauss, now. From Gershwin’s 1926 musical Oh, Kay!, the tune became a No. 2 hit alongside the Broadway show and has been recorded by such artists as Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Willie Nelson, Barbara Streisand and Linda Ronstadt.

“The best interpreters of lyrics today are country singers,” Feinstein explains. “The deeper habitation of a song comes from connecting lyrically to the story and telling it honestly and with simplicity. Country artists are the last bastion of that art. Gershwin Country, was a chance to amplify and expand the palette of what Gershwin songs said, for I felt they could be heard anew from a different perspective and remain organic. And the thought of creating a Gershwin project with the potential to reach those who have never heard the name and would simply take the songs on face value was too irresistible.”

Other guests include The Time Jumpers with Vince Gill, who offer a harmony-filled version of 1924’s “Fascinating Rhythm,” Ronnie Milsap, who lends his distinctive vocals to 1924’s “Oh, Lady Be Good!” and Lee Ann Womack on 1927’s “Soon.” Mandy Barnett delivers a moving performance of “How Long Has This Been Going On?”

Rounding out the album is Amy Grant, who lends her vocals to one of the Gershwins’ most enduring songs, “They Can’t Take That Away From Me,” which was originally written for the 1937 Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers film Shall We Dance. Another popular standard, “I’ve Got a Crush on You” is performed with Rosanne Cash in an upbeat arrangement.

Gershwin Country Track List:
1. Love Is Here To Stay featuring Dolly Parton
2. I’ve Got A Crush On You featuring Rosanne Cash
3. Someone To Watch Over Me featuring Alison Krauss
4. I Got Rhythm featuring Brad Paisley
5. They Can’t Take That Away From Me featuring Amy Grant
6. Clap Yo’ Hands featuring Lyle Lovett
7. How Long Has This Been Going On? featuring Mandy Barnett
8. Fascinating Rhythm featuring The Time Jumpers with Vince Gill
9. Soon featuring Lee Ann Womack
10. Oh, Lady Be Good! featuring Ronnie Milsap
11. Embraceable You featuring Liza Minnelli

Radio Music License Committee, Global Music Rights Reach Final Settlement Agreement

The Radio Music License Committee and Global Music Rights, LLC have settled the long-running RMLC-GMR lawsuits. The settlement agreement is now final, and the licenses that radio stations signed will begin on April 1, 2022.

Some of the conditions of their agreement include a majority of commercial radio stations entering long-term licenses with GMR.

“Global Music Rights stands for songwriters and the value of their music,” says GMR’s founder Irving Azoff.  “I am proud of the GMR team for the hard work on behalf of songwriters in achieving this settlement. It is wonderful that GMR and thousands of radio stations coast to coast are partnered to bring great music to fans for many years.”

“This settlement puts an end to more than five years of litigation and represents a shared desire by both sides to find a way for radio stations and GMR to work together on a long-term basis without repeatedly resorting to litigation,” adds RMLC Chairman, Ed Atsinger III.

At RMLC’s request, GMR has agreed that any radio station that still wishes to opt into the settlement has the opportunity to do so until March 31, 2022 by contacting GMR at radiolicensing@globalmusicrights.com.

As of April 1, 2022, stations without a license from GMR will no longer be permitted to publicly perform songs within the GMR repertory.

Robert Earl Keen: ‘The Goal Is To Have A Real Sweet Send-Off’ [Interview]

After 40 years of entertaining his legion of fans across the world, Robert Earl Keen announced in January that he will be retiring from touring this fall.

Sharing the news in a heartfelt poem entitled “Time Flies,” the 66-year-old entertainer explained that he was neither sick nor experiencing any “existential crisis” when making the decision to step away from touring. Rather he simply wanted to quit the road while he still loved it.

“One of the main things that stuck in my mind when I first started [performing] was that I always wanted to have the same passion and not get burnt out or lose that passion. I had been feeling like I was really burning out,” Keen shares with MusicRow. “I didn’t want to be someone who couldn’t make that decision or who would just continue to go through the motions. I wanted to go out on a high note.

“I’ve been telling people I want to make two lives out of one,” he continues. “I had this really great life and I’m not quitting music by any stretch, but I’m quitting touring. There’s so much more that I want to do in music and even in other areas. I never have been scared of retiring, but I’m not just going to play golf and die. That’s not what I’m interested in.”

Though closing the chapter on touring, the Texas native will continue to write, record, and host his own Americana Podcast, which he started nearly three years ago. Since beginning the podcast, Keen says it has opened him up to a whole new world of great, young players from the genre.

“Some of them are just stellar, and I’ve gotten to be introduced to them and listen to their music. I thrive on that interchange and it’s opened up my ears and eyes to all kinds of music.”

He adds, “The other part of [continuing to work on music] is, at the outset of COVID in May of 2020, I started building a video studio with cameras, lights, and everything else. I feel like that’s a vehicle to put my songs out there and also use it to have people come out and play, do a livestream, a podcast, or whatever else. I’ve built up enough of a name for myself where people will come to me now.”

And what a name he’s built.

Throughout his career, Keen has recorded 19 albums—12 studio projects and 7 live records—and celebrated a number of successful songs, including “The Front Porch Song,” which he wrote with Lyle Lovett; his signature “The Road Goes on Forever,” “I Gotta Go,” and “Feelin’ Good Again;” and the holiday classic “Merry Christmas From The Family.”

The decorated singer-songwriter has also notched a plethora of writing credits for artists such as Lovett, George Strait, Montgomery Gentry, The Chicks, The Highwaymen, Gillian Welch, and Shawn Colvin, to name a few. Along the way, he has been honored with the BMI Troubadour Award, Texas A&M University Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame Spirit of Texas Award. Keen was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2020.

The renowned entertainer also has quite a resume when it comes to his touring success. “I like to say I’ve played everything from a garage sale to the Kennedy Center,” he quips. “I’ve experienced every machination of the music business and any way you can do a show that you could possibly think of.

“The best two hours of my day, especially on the road, was when I was performing,” Keen recalls fondly. “Everything else just fell away when I got up there and started playing. All the travel and all the obstacles that you encountered just fell away.“

Keen will play a string of remaining shows over the coming months with stops in Texas, Utah, Colorado, and more before closing his touring chapter over Labor Day weekend. With two back-to-back shows at Floore’s Country Store in Helotes, Texas, he will wrap up the weekend with a special fan appreciation party on Sept. 5.

“I really want it to be a come one, come all,” Keen explains. “On Labor Day, I’m going to have a free fan appreciation day with the house band. I’m going to invite all my Texas pals and some of my other friends that I love around the country. People can get up and play some songs, then more people can get up and play some more. Everybody else can just drink beer, shake hands and take pictures.”

He sums, “The goal is to have a real sweet send-off.”

Although it’s the end of an era, fans have no need to fret as Keen already has plans to start scratching out a record later this spring.

“My thought is it will be somewhat in the nature of a farewell record, like a ‘see you down the road’ kind of thing,” he puts simply.

Keen will give his final public performance in Music City tomorrow night (Feb. 18) at the historic Ryman Auditorium. Originally scheduled for December as part of his “Road To Christmas Tour,” the nearly sold out show will mark his tenth year of sharing his unique Christmas show at the hallowed venue.

Amazon Music Names Breland As Next Breakthrough Artist

Amazon Music has selected country trailblazer Breland as the next Breakthrough Artist.

As a Breakthrough Artist, the singer, songwriter and producer will receive substantial support from Amazon Music, including bespoke video and audio content, global marketing campaigns, increased visibility across playlists and programming, and high-profile Amazon Original tracks.

He will also be a featured guest on Country Heat Weekly, Amazon Music’s first genre-focused original podcast, to connect with co-hosts Kelly Sutton and Amber Anderson on his new music and the year ahead.

Breland’s debut single, “My Truck,” fused hip-hop with country and became a breakout success, going Platinum and landing him on best-of-the-year lists from NPR and The New York Times. Since signing to Bad Realm Records/Atlantic Records, he has collaborated with Gary LeVox of Rascal Flatts, Nelly, Blanco Brown, Lauren Alaina, and Chase Rice. Breland also recently enlisted Keith Urban for the dynamic collaboration “Throw It Back,” and is currently featured on Dierks Bentley’s single with Hardy, “Beers On Me.”

“It’s an honor to be selected as the next Breakthrough Artist. Coming together with Amazon Music is a natural pairing. We share the same vision for my music, and I know that by working with them, I’ll be able to make even my most ambitious plans a reality. I can’t wait to share what we’re working on with my fans,” Breland shares.

Amazon Music has also unveiled details of the Breakthrough Development Fund, an initiative created to provide independent artists with additional financial support as they launch their careers. Each month, one independent artist in the U.S. will receive financial support to go towards some of the costs artists face when starting out, such as funding an early tour, hiring a PR or social team, and more. Thus far in 2022, the fund has supported singer-songwriter Lauren Spencer-Smith and Muni Long.

“Helping to develop artists is something that is very important to Amazon Music, and we understand that as their career starts to grow, each artist has different needs. Depending on where they’re at in their career, they may need to build a strong team around them or to enhance their live show. With the Breakthrough Development Fund, we want to help artists build their teams and their profile,” says Amazon Global Co-Head of Artist Relations Chris Graham. “Whether we’re backing artists with this new fund, providing a stage for their music on our Breakthrough playlists, or supporting them with the Breakthrough Artist program, Amazon Music is constantly working to help emerging artists find new fans and get to the next level of their careers.”

Bob Frank Entertainment Acquires Portion Of Charlie Daniels Masters

Bob Frank Entertainment (BFE) has bought into the late Charlie Daniels’ catalog of masters, becoming equal partners with Blue Hat Records and the Daniels Estate.

BFE CEO Bob Frank now owns one third of the catalog. The remaining equal portions belonging to Blue Hat Records (David Corlew) and the Daniels Estate (Hazel Daniels and Charlie Daniels, Jr.).

“This transaction will be the first of many for BFE’s new privately funded investment arm, Red Shark Ventures, which is focused on catalog masters,” explains Frank. “What better way to launch this effort than with our longtime partner Blue Hat Records who we have been in business with for over 20 years. With such a deep and historic archive, we already have a strong release schedule through 2023.”

“We have been distribution partners with Bob Frank for over 20 years,” adds Corlew, Daniels’ longtime manager. “This purchase allows us to work even closer with Bob and his team to continue Charlie’s musical legacy in a much larger way. Bob has many years of experience with major labels and distribution, which will allow us to reach into a global market that we haven’t really touched, as well as provide a new domestic awareness to one of the oldest independent artist-owned labels. Hazel, Charlie Jr., and I are very excited about this new venture.”

Along with this news, Blue Hat Records and BFE announced they will release a digital and vinyl album of the very first Volunteer Jam, held in 1974 at the War Memorial Auditorium in Nashville. The project will include previously unreleased live tracks of some of Daniels’ biggest hit songs.

“Charlie Jr., David and I are thrilled to welcome Bob into our family,” says Hazel Daniels. “Charlie loved working with him so we feel this partnership is a perfect fit.”
