Martina McBride will join with other special musical guests to help salute and celebrate women cancer survivors at the famed Grand Ole Opry on August 24.
McBride and the Opry are joining with the Women Survivors Alliance and the National Women’s Survivors Convention to celebrate women survivors from across the country, and especially those attending the National Women’s Survivors Convention that same weekend at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville.
The Grand Ole Opry will recognize these women throughout the night.  Olympic Gold Medalist and cancer survivor Scott Hamilton will serve as a guest announcer.
“We’re delighted to be a part of these survivors’ visits to Nashville,” said Opry Vice President and General Manager Pete Fisher. “We are going to have a lot of fun while also helping them take great steps toward creating awareness and a real movement about survivorship.”
“We are so grateful to Martina and our partners at the Grand Ole Opry for making this night so special,” said Karen Shayne, founder of the Women Survivors Alliance. “Women cancer survivors will be ready to celebrate as we wrap up our national convention and their collective efforts to create a national movement to help other women dealing with life after cancer.”

Travis Tritt will release a remake of “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough,” the Patty Smyth and Don Henley duet, with his 15-year-old daughter Tyler Reese this Father’s Day (June 16).
Tritt took control of the master recording from his former label after the song failed to make it onto Tritt’s 2007 album, The Storm. The duet will be the lead single from an upcoming re-release of the album. It will mark Tritt’s first single in six years.
Tritt explains his daughter had never heard the song before stumbling upon it driving from Florida last year on an iPod. “She started singing along in the backseat,” explains Tritt. “When it ended she made me play it again five or six more times. When we got home, I told my wife that I thought Tyler Reese could really do a great job on this song. We agreed and I took her in the studio to sing her parts. She really nailed it.”
A video for the title is forthcoming, expected be released to cable and online outlets. Meanwhile, Tritt will continue touring with a full band throughout the year, joined by Reese on select dates.

Bobby Karl Works The Nashville Film Festival's 'Muscle Shoals Documentary'

Nashville Film Festival LogoSaturday night’s screening of the Muscle Shoals documentary was instantly sold out at the Nashville Film Festival (April 20).
That isn’t particularly newsworthy, since almost all of the festival’s offerings were sell-outs this year. What is notable about Muscle Shoals is that it had a private screening as well. On Tuesday (April 23), BMI hosted an intimate gathering at its sixth-floor screening room for some of us who didn’t get to see the film’s Music City debut.
The engrossing documentary tells the unlikely story of how a small, out-of-the-way, northern Alabama community became a recording hotbed. It also explores the social fabric of the 1960s and 1970s when a group of white studio musicians, The Swampers, teamed up with soul singers during the Civil Rights era to create records of undying power.
The soundtrack includes “You Better Move On,” the first Muscle Shoals hit, as well as such timeless masterpieces as “Steal Away,” “I’d Rather Go Blind,” “I Never Loved a Man,” “Mustang Sally,” “Land of 1,000 Dances,” “When a Man Loves a Woman,” “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” and more. Intercut with the interviews are scenes of Alabama cottonfields, rural shacks, farmlands and the shoals of the Tennessee River.
The assembled cast is stunning. Among those telling the tale on camera are Aretha Franklin, Mick Jagger, Bono, Gregg Allman, Steve Winwood, Wilson Pickett, Alicia Keys, Keith Richards, Jerry Wexler, Candi Staton, Dan Penn, Spooner Oldham, Barry Beckett, Clarence Carter, Percy Sledge and John Paul White of The Civil Wars. Not the least of those testifying in the film isthe cornerstone Muscle Shoals business figure, Rick Hall. The life story of this tempestuous and driven musical great is reason enough to watch the film.
Rick & Linda Hall were there for the screening. So were T.K. Kimbrell, Hank Adam Locklin, Jon Freeman, Jody Williams, Susan Stewart, Whitney Daane, Natasha Powell, Tom Roland, Keb Mo, Mark Mason, Bob & Leslie Tomasina DiPiero, Clay Bradley, Abby White and Charlie Feldman.
I complemented Abby on her Nashville Scene story about the decaying animatronic animal band at the Strike & Spare. It turns out that Shooter Jennings wants to do a benefit to help raise the $10,000 needed to restore the attraction, which is one of only two left in the U.S.
As for Muscle Shoals, it has already drawn raves at several other American film festivals. Next, it heads to the London Film Festival and on to a European screening tour. PBS will air it in the future.
After the screening, BMI hosted a reception for the lucky attendees.

Warner Music Nashville has promoted Tree Paine to Sr. VP, Publicity, WMN. Paine will oversee all publicity for Warner Music Group’s country and Christian divisions, which include Atlantic, Elektra, Warner Bros., LoudMouth and Word Entertainment. She previously served as VP, Publicity, and will continue to report to John Esposito, President and CEO, WMN.
“What makes Tree such an incredible publicist is her broad understanding of the business, which covers everything from artist development and management, to touring and marketing,” said Esposito. “She is a tremendous asset to our team, has great relationships with each of our artists, and time and again produces fantastic media coverage on their behalf. Tree’s promotion is a deserving recognition of the fact that she’s a vital part of our senior team.”
“Warner Music Nashville is home to many of the most talented artists and dedicated staff I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with,” said Paine. “I’m fortunate to be working alongside John Esposito and Peter Strickland (EVP & GM, WMN). They have created a company that allows the staff to be creative and forward-thinking, by giving all of us at WMN the tools to do the very best job for our artists. I am immensely grateful to be a part of such a fun and creative company, and excited to continue my tenure, now as Senior Vice President.”
Paine began her career as an intern at Mute Records in the Sales & Marketing department which help her land her first job as a National Marketing Manager at World Domination Records, followed by an executive assistant position in the A&R department at Maverick Records. In 1995, Paine joined Interscope Records as a West Coast Marketing & Artist Development representative, where she worked with No Doubt, The Wallflowers, Snoop Dogg, Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson. Paine left Interscope to launch her own street marketing company, retaining Bonnie Raitt as her first client. She developed street marketing campaigns around Raitt, Liz Phair, and Meredith Brooks’ Lillith Fair appearances.
Over the years, her client roster grew to include Warner Bros. Records, Capitol Records, London Records, and 143 Records. In 1999, Paine merged her company with Immortal Records and created IR Street Marketing, where she managed more than 300 street reps across the country. Having built experience in street and tour marketing, Paine took a job at the William Morris Agency in Beverly Hills, where she worked with Gayle Holcomb in the Fairs & Festivals department.
Holcomb was then the Vice Chairman of the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and became instrumental in Paine’s hire to oversee all media, radio, and marketing at the ACM. At the ACM, Paine was part of the formation of the ACM Charitable Foundation, which later became Lifting Lives, and helped organize and implement functions based around it along with the Awards’ move to Las Vegas. After five years at the ACM, Paine joined Warner Music Nashville in 2007.

Weekly Register: Shared Streaming Challenges—Video And Music

nflixThe video streaming business is experiencing similar challenges as the music industry as it struggles become profitable.
Earlier this week Netflix stock careened 24% (+$42.73) in after hours trading as the company announced robust first quarter gains in streaming subscriber growth. As of March 31, Netflix had about 29.2 million subscribers, revenue of $1.02 billion and profits of 5¢ a share. For comparison, HBO’s 2012 year end subscriber count was 28.7 million.
That’s a lot of numbers, but what is the underlying story? Netflix operates on a subscription model much like Pandora and Spotify. For $7.99 a month Netflix customers can stream unlimited content to a variety of screens—HD TV, mobile, tablet or desktop. Unlike Pandora and Spotify, there is no free (ad-supported) service. Another differentiator between the video and music streamers, Netflix is actually producing and creating its own exclusive content. Earlier this year the channel debuted “House Of Cards” which received critical acclaim and boosted subscriptions. Talking about the effect of the mini-series on subscriptions, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings told stock analysts “It’s a nice long-term tailwind.” The company plans to spend $5.63 billion over the next few years on original and exclusive content.
weeklygrid4-21-13Like the music industry, Netflix also has a piracy problem with its consumers and or multiple family members (over) sharing the same log-in. According to a Bloomberg article, Netflix is facing a crossroads where in order to remain profitable and add subscribers they must either raise prices or tighten up sharing rules. Currently two people can watch different programs at the same time using the same subscription. The article quotes former EMI Music Group exec John Rose, now managing director for media, technology at Boston Group Consulting who says, “In general consumers don’t see sharing accounts as theft.” Rose notes consumers have many choices and raising prices, for example creates a risk they will go elsewhere for content. In fact, despite the rosy quarter, stock analysts seem to be quite unsure whether Netflix can actually reach a scale where it can achieve long-term health. Current research shows Netflix customers enjoy 87 minutes of daily streaming per customer. Hastings hopes reaching his goal of 90 million U.S. customers (a 300 percent increase) over two years will help pay for all the content they are purchasing. Will he raise prices, tighten sharing, attract attention with great content or a combination of all three? Or will Netflix get into the music business and offer one subscription for music and video content?

The sales week ended 4-21-13 had little to distinguish itself. The big ACM bump happened last week, and country mustered just one Top Ten debut this week–Texas troubadors, the Casey Donahew Band who grabbed lucky No. 7 with over 13k (75 percent digital) in sales. I’m not familiar with the CDB, but a quick look at the band’s web site reveals a professionally run organization that any Music City manager would be proud to helm.
cdbMr. “Voice” Shelton reclaimed the No. 1 Top Country Album position with over 42k units and The Band Perry (37k) moved from No. 4 last week to No. 2. Sales for Brad Paisley’s No. 1 debut last week fell 66 percent to about 34k giving him a two week total of 135k.
Other notable debut releases included Steve Earle and the Dukes (No. 12; 11k); Granger Smith (No. 15; 10k) and Willie Nelson (No. 16; 10k).
Country track sales were off 21 percent w/w but remain ahead of last year by 6.6 percent. Florida Georgia Line continues to ignite the country tracks chart as its combined versions of “Cruise” continue to be the week’s screamin’ stream (No. 1; 129k) . The track is now at 2.85 million downloads and will soon pass three!
Readers may want to click over to MR’s Album Release calendar to take a look at what’s on the way. It looks like another light week and then I’d suggest you fasten your seat belt…

Amos’ previous album, Mission Bell, debuted atop the Billboard Top 200 charts upon its release in 2011. The album also spawned the hit “Windows Are Rolled Down.” The Philadelphia-born singer-songwriter also collaborated with Zac Brown Band on “Day That I Die,” from the group’s Uncaged album.
