Born in Arlington, Texas, Mickey Guyton moved around the Lone Star state as her father’s engineering job took them to Waco, Tyler, Dallas and Fort Worth. Music was a constant in her nomadic life. She began singing gospel in church when she was only five and grew up listening to a variety of artists, including Dolly Parton, LeAnn Rimes, Whitney Houston and gospel innovators BeBe and CeCe Winans.
Guyton moved to Los Angeles after high school to attend Santa Monica College. She worked long hours at two jobs, struggling to make ends meet, but held on to her dream of becoming a country singer. A chance encounter turned everything around. A friend introduced her to producer Julian Raymond (Glen Campbell, the Wallflowers) who was immediately impressed with her.
He connected her to Gary Borman and his partner Steve Moir, the company that built the careers of Faith Hill, Keith Urban and Lady Antebellum. Guyton moved to Nashville in 2011 to pursue her dream and has embedded herself in the town’s songwriter community.
Also in 2011, Guyton signed to Capitol Records Nashville and sang at the White House during an all-star concert that included James Taylor, Dierks Bentley, Kris Kristofferson, The Band Perry, Darius Rucker and Lyle Lovett. The show was captured by PBS and broadcast as part of their In Performance at the White House series. Her rendition of Patsy Cline’s classic “Crazy” was one of the highlights of the night.
Guyton released her self-titled debut EP on May 26 and collaborated with award-winning producers Nathan Chapman, Dann Huff, and Luke Laird. “Better Than You Left Me” was Guyton’s powerful debut single, which she co-wrote with Jennifer Hanson, Jenn Schott and Nathan Chapman. Last year, Guyton sang on ABC’s Good Morning America, toured with Brad Paisley on his Crushin’ It World Tour and released the holiday single “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” from Disney’s Frozen.
She is nominated this year for her first ACM Award for Best New Female Artist.

Jana Kramer, Tia Sillers Will Sing To Original Choreography At Ballet Ball
/by Craig_ShelburneJana Kramer
Jana Kramer and songwriter Tia Sillers will perform at Nashville Ballet’s largest annual fundraiser, Ballet Ball, at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center on Saturday (March 12).
Kramer will perform “I Got The Boy” from her latest album, Thirty One. Nashville Ballet company dancer Christopher Stuart will choreograph an original piece to be presented alongside Kramer’s live performance featuring Nashville Ballet dancers.
“This is the first time I’ve ever participated in an event like this,” Kramer said. “I grew up in the ballet world, and this makes me feel as though it’s all come full circle. I can’t wait to celebrate this wonderful evening in our city that I love.”
Also slated for the night’s entertainment, Nashville Ballet will bring a piece of The Bluebird Cafe to Ballet Ball following its acclaimed collaboration during February’s Attitude series. Soulful singer/songwriter Karla Davis (American Idol, The Voice) will perform “Dare to Dance Alone,” and Victoria Banks will perform “The Wheel.”
In honor of the organization’s 30th anniversary season, Sillers will be the inaugural recipient of the Nashville Ballet Synergy Award. The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding creative contributions to inspire dance. Sillers will accept the award for her Grammy Award-winning song “I Hope You Dance.” She will perform the song live to original choreography by Stuart.
“Our 30th anniversary season is the perfect opportunity to honor the relationship between music and dance,” Paul Vasterling, Nashville Ballet Artistic Director & CEO, said. “Our wonderful co-chairs Mary Morgan Ketchel and Sharon Sandahl came up with this metaphor that sums up the award: A songwriter is to music as a choreographer is to dance; neither can achieve full potential without the other. Music is an incredible inspiration for dance, and this award recognizes the way in which one art form inspires another.”
Tickets for Ballet Ball are by invitation only. The event provides the necessary funding for Nashville Ballet’s Outreach & Education program, which introduced the art of dance to more than 43,000 children and families throughout Nashville and the surrounding area last year.

/by Craig_ShelburneNina Carter
Nina Carter has been promoted to Associate Director, Writer-Publisher Relations, in Nashville. Carter moved to Nashville last year from BMI’s Atlanta office, where she was heavily involved with the planning and execution of the BMI Hip Hop and R&B Awards, local showcases, and South by Southwest offerings.
While in the Nashville office, she has been a key component of the success of the Eastside Sounds showcases, Maui Songwriters Festival, and Mountain High Music Festival, in addition to managing relationships with songwriters. Her new role will see her signing and providing service to writers in indie, rock, hip hop, film and TV, and country, as well as providing new showcase opportunities for artists in these genres.
“Nina Carter is a dynamic individual with creative and organizational skills that make her a perfect fit for our department,” says Jody Williams, Vice President, Writer-Publisher Relations, Nashville. “She came to us after working for three years in BMI’s Atlanta office. For the last six months she has assisted Mark Mason in planning and executing the many events our department produces. She has a great ear for all kinds of music and is a tremendous help to emerging and established songwriters.”
Carter is an Athens, Georgia, native, and graduate of the University of Georgia Music Business program. She began as an intern for the historic Georgia Theatre, following the tragic fire in 2009, to assist with fundraising and event management. After graduating from UGA, Carter went on the road with Atlanta-based company Shimon Presents to promote, recruit and manage volunteers onsite at music festivals like Bonnaroo, Hangout Festival, Wakarusa, All Good and Electric Forest Festival. She lived in Austin, Texas, for two years, where she worked for South By Southwest as Music Panels Coordinator and Special Projects Assistant.
In July 2012, Carter relocated to Atlanta to work in Writer-Publisher Relations at BMI, where she has been an invaluable part of the team ever since. She is a lively member of the music community, leading the Nashville chapter of the non-profit organization We’re hEAR For You, whose mission is to increase awareness of noise-induced hearing loss, hearing loss prevention and the use of earplugs among the music community.
IFPI Selects SoundExchange To Power ISRC Search Site
/by Jessica NicholsonSoundExchange has announced its new ISRC Search Site, designed to benefit the music industry by providing instant access to SoundExchange’s database of sound recording information. SoundExchange’s ISRC Search Site improves efficiency and transparency and demonstrates SoundExchange’s commitment to the music industry.
A free service that provides 24/7 access to data, SoundExchange’s ISRC Search Site will help all parties through improved tracking and reporting of sound recording usage. The database includes nearly 20 million ISRCs reported to SoundExchange.
“SoundExchange is at the center of digital music, with unparalleled expertise in royalty administration and music metadata. We created this critical resource to improve our own efficient royalty processing, and we are delighted now to give the music community access to this much-needed data,” SoundExchange President and CEO Michael Huppe said. “This is part of our ongoing commitment to develop products and services that help the music industry move forward. We eliminate friction through better and more efficient technology solutions, so creators in the music community can focus on the music.”
International Standard Recording Codes (ISRCs), the standard for identifying sound recordings, aid in pinpointing the tens of millions of unique sound recordings in commercial releases worldwide, and SoundExchange’s ISRC Search Site makes visible its sound recording metadata linked to the ISRC identifier. While the database does not contain a listing of every ISRC ever issued, it contains the vast majority of commercially active recordings sourced by thousands of rights owners, with more listings added every day.
While ISRC data is available elsewhere, the site aims to provide the information in a comprehensive manner.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), which manages the ISRC system globally under an appointment from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), selected the SoundExchange repertoire database to power the ISRC lookup capability on its own IFPI.org website.
“The ISRC Search Site will give a new level of accessibility to help musicians, performers, managers, music publishers, and many others understand where their music has been used whilst also facilitating more accurate reporting by users of digital music. With the quantity of data expected to grow as we move deeper into the digital age, this tool will be vital to ensuring better communication throughout the music ecosystem,” IFPI Chief Executive Frances Moore said. “We’re delighted that SoundExchange has developed this much-needed tool to help our record company members. As the world’s biggest CMO, they have an unparalleled platform to deliver the underlying technology and data this industry needs.”
