Logan Mize, Willie Jones Team For West Coast Tour

Big Yellow Dog Music’s Logan Mize and 4Sound/Empire’s Willie Jones will hit the road in 2020 for a West Coast tour.

Mize recently released the single “I Ain’t Gotta Grow Up,” while Jones’ recent releases include “Whole Lotta Love,” and “Bachelorettes on Broadway,” a tribute to Nashville’s standing as a top bachelorette party destination.

“We’re excited to announce our  ‘I Ain’t Gotta Grow Up’ tour, and we’re bringing along our pal, Willie Jones!” shares Mize. “We may have a few tricks up our sleeve…stay tuned.”

“Teaming up to tour with Logan to start 2020 is going to be real cool,” adds Jones. “We already got the party started early in Germany a month ago so I already know everyone coming to these shows are gonna catch vibes.”

Prescription Songs Signs Bryant Taylorr

Prescription Songs has signed a deal with Bryant Taylorr. The Nashville native is signed to SYZYGY Management, led by co-founders Eric Holt and Zack Cobb.

Dolby Atmos Music Coming To TIDAL HiFi

TIDAL and Dolby Laboratories are introducing a more authentic way to enjoy songs with Dolby Atmos Music, now available on TIDAL HiFi. Beginning today, members subscribing to the TIDAL HiFi tier with compatible Android smartphones or tablets will have access to a growing library of music available in Dolby Atmos from Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group.

Reservoir Signs “Juice” Songwriter Sam Sumser

Reservoir has signed Grammy-nominated writer and producer Sam Sumser, including rights to Sumser’s catalog, which includes Lizzo’s “Juice” and “Lingerie” from her Grammy-nominated album Cuz I Love You. He also contributed to Anitta’s “Banana,” ft. Becky G, from Anitta’s album Kisses.

The Nashville-based Sumser co-wrote Lizzo’s catchy hit “Juice,” which has now been certified Platinum by the RIAA. Inaugural Global APRA Music Awards Coming To Nashville In March

APRA AMCOS has announced the nominees and event details for the inaugural Global APRA Music Awards. Ceremonies will take place in Los Angeles (Feb. 26, at the GRAMMY Museum, Clive Davis Theater, hosted by Maya Jupiter), Nashville (March 1, at Clementine Hall, hosted by O’Shea) and London (March 6, at Ham Yard Hotel Soho, hosted by Georgia Mooney).

APRA AMCOS includes the Australasian Performing Right Association and the Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society, both not-for-profit copyright collectives which jointly represent over 47,000 composers, lyricists and music publishers in Australia and New Zealand. APRA AMCOS opened a Nashville office in 2017.

Awards will be presented to Australasian songwriters, composers and music publishers achieving artistic excellence and commercial success in international markets. Global APRA Music Awards will be handed out in each city for the following categories: Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year, Overseas Recognition Award, Songwriter of the Year, and Distinguished Services Award.

In the Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year Nashville category are nominees Mitchell Thompson and Thomas Jordan (of Seaforth) who released their debut EP Love That on Sony Nashville in 2019 and have been touring in the States. Also in the running is songwriter/musician Paul Mabury, who won a Grammy this year for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance as a co-writer on Lauren Daigle’s “You Say,” which spent a record 65 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Christian Songs chart. Rebecca Chilcott – known as Americana singer-songwriter Ruby Boots – made the move to Nashville a few years back, signed a record deal with Bloodshot Records, and released her acclaimed album Don’t Talk About It. And Nashville-via-Sydney singer-songwriter Sinead Burgess is a rising star on the back of her album Damaged Goods and her latest single “Reno.”

Nominees for Overseas Recognition Award Nashville include Seaforth, Paul Mabury, Mia Fieldes, and Rick Price.

Recording Academy’s Diversity & Inclusion Task Force Releases Official Report, Recommendations

The Recording Academy has announced it will implement recommendations outlined by the Recording Academy Diversity & Inclusion Task Force, which were detailed in a report released Thursday (Dec. 12). Those recommendations include restructuring its Board of Trustees to ensure that music creators from the broadest range of ages, backgrounds, genders, genres, crafts and regions are fully represented within the organization’s leadership.

The Task Force, led by Tina Tchen, offered a report outlining several recommendations relating to the Recording Academy’s operations and internal policies, to organizational structure, nominee committee procedures, voting procedures and nomination qualifications. The full Recording Academy Diversity and Inclusion Task Force Report can be found here.

One of the key Task Force recommendations is that the Academy implement a ranked choice voting system to determine Grammy Award nominees and winners in key categories including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. A ranked choice system allows voters to rank candidates on a ballot in order of preference and is designed to ensure as many voters as possible will help elect a candidate they support. After the first round of votes are tabulated if a candidate wins a majority of first preference votes, he or she is declared the winner. However, if no candidate wins a majority of first-preference votes, the candidate with the fewest first preference votes is eliminated. First-preference votes for that losing candidate are discarded, and the second-preference vote of each person who voted for the failed candidate are lifted and redistributed to their next-preferred candidate. A new tally is then conducted with the failed candidate out of the running. The process is repeated until a single candidate wins a majority of the first-preference votes. The Academy stated it will continue to research the report’s recommendation to change portions of the Grammy Award voting process to a ranked-choice system.

The Task Force also recommends the Academy better engage and involve the Professional Members in Academy operations and governance. As the Grammys are the only peer-based award in the music industry, Professional members–including long-time music industry execs who do not themselves create music–do note vote on the Grammy Awards. Professional members can only make up 20% of the Governors in a given Chapter and are not eligible to serve on any National Committee other than the Membership Committee (and on that committee can only be one of three additional members) and cannot hold a number of key leadership positions at the Chapter and national levels. However, the Professional Members are more demographically diverse than Voting Members. In October 2019, while female only made 22% of the Academy’s voting members, females make up 38% of the Academy’s Professional members. The Professional Membership is also more racially diverse.

The Task Force asked that the Academy take steps to clarify that under its new membership rules, the 12-credit qualification is not a rigid requirement, but instead a rebuttable presumption that prospective members can overcome through letters of recommendation, career substantiation and other qualities, in an effort to attract a more diverse membership body.

Recording Academy Progress

The Recording Academy has already made progress toward implementing 17 of the 18 reforms set forth by the Task Force, including ensuring gender parity on Awards and Governance committees, publicly reporting on the demographic composition of its workforce across different levels of seniority, and increasing outreach to diverse communities, which include key initiatives for female producers and engineers.

The report stated that in 2018, shortly following the formation of the Task Force, only 20% of Recording Academy voters were female. The racial diversity numbers were only slightly better, with significant underrepresentation in the Asian-American and Hispanic communities. 40% of the academy’s voting members are producers and engineers, while the percentage of female producers and engineers that are also academy voters is 12 percent. That year, the Recording Academy took steps to increase the diversity of Recording Academy voters. 946 potential new members were invited to join the academy in an effort to increase diversity among its voters; 200 of those accepted the invitation. In 2019, the Recording Academy invited 1,340 potential new members to join; 743 of those accepted the invitation. As of October 2019, 22% of the Recording Academy’s voters are female.

The report also found that from 2015-2018 the Recording Academy’s National Governance Committees were 71% male and 29% female, while from 2015-2017, the Nomination Review Committees were 74% male and 26% female. These numbers have improved, as for the 61st Grammy Awards, the individuals appointed as members of the nominations review committees were 51% female, while the gender demographics for the national governance committees heading into the 61st Grammy Awards were 52% male and 48% female, with the national governance committee co-chairs being an even 50/50 split in gender demographics.

However, the Task Force sees that there is still work to be done with the Board of Trustees. Between 2012 and the present, the Recording Academy’s Board of Trustees has been 68% male and 69% Caucasian; the board is currently 65% male and 63% Caucasian. The Task Force offered a recommendation that the Academy take steps to ensure that the Board of Trustees assume responsibility for reviewing the Academy’s progress on issues of diversity and inclusion and incorporate responsibility and accountability for these issues in the Board’s governance function, either though either through the creation of a new national governance committee focused exclusively on issues of diversity and inclusion or by placing this responsibility within an existing committee.

“The mission of the Recording Academy is to serve and advocate for music creators from all genres and of all genders and generations,” said Recording Academy President/CEO Deborah Dugan. “We have recently made tremendous progress and I’m proud to report that our leadership team is currently 50 percent female and that the 2019 Academy membership class is the most diverse in our history. However, there is still work to be done. We are deeply committed to continuing to implement the Task Force’s recommendations and building a community that is truly representative of our diverse and dynamic creators.”

“Over the course of the last year and a half, the Task Force dedicated hundreds of hours of their time to conduct a thorough analysis of how the Recording Academy could do better to create a diverse and inclusive environment for all workers and music creators. We owe a debt of gratitude to the impressive lineup of leaders from throughout the music industry who served on the Task Force for their tireless commitment to changing the Academy, and the industry, for the better,” said Tchen. “We are also so grateful for the full cooperation and participation of the Recording Academy at every step, and are encouraged by the commitment to change they announced today.”

The Recording Academy will have the task force reconvene in one year to assess progress on the initiatives.

Thomas Rhett Announces Center Point Road Tour

Thomas Rhett is already making big plans for the Summer, announcing his headlining Center Point Road Tour with special guests Cole Swindell and HARDY.

The tour visits cities across the country beginning May 29 with back-to-back shows in Gilford, New Hampshire, and stops in Cincinnati, Tampa, Charlotte, Albuquerque, and more through Aug. 29. Live Nation is the official tour promoter and fans can first purchase tickets beginning Jan. 24, 2020 for select cities as part of Live Nation’s Country Megaticket at Megaticket.com

Rhett’s 40-city 2019 Very Hot Summer Tour drew over 775,000 fans to the shows. He’s wrapping up the year with some TV appearances, including a visit to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night (Dec. 11), and a performance on the prestigious 2019 Kennedy Center Honors in Washington D.C. where he paid tribute to Sesame Street, which is set to air on CBS Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. CT. His full performance on the iconic show will premiere in 2020 on HBO.

Country Music And Lifestyle Network Circle Staffs Up

Following yesterday’s announcement of a programming slate and launch date set for Jan. 1, 2020, Circle has added executives to lead its country music and lifestyle network.

Geoff DeFrance joins as Senior Vice President, Digital; Evan Haiman as Senior Vice President, Content and Teresa George as Vice President, Strategic Partnerships. All three executives are based in Nashville and report directly to Drew Reifenberger, General Manager of Circle Media.

DeFrance, Senior Vice President, Digital, Circle Media, will be leading the network’s digital subscription video on demand product strategy, and has more than 17 years of experience building innovative products in the media, entertainment and ad technology verticals. His career includes time at Yahoo!, Motor Trend Group and Kelley Blue Book; most recently he built and scaled Motor Trend Group’s SVOD/OTT platform, which was acquired by Discovery Communications, Inc.

Haiman, Senior Vice President, Content, Circle Media, is responsible for the network’s content strategy, development, programming and operations for the network and streaming service, and brings 30 years of experience in the production sphere, including work with MLB, HBO and Warner Bros. Most recently, Haiman was VP, Development, Programming and Production for AXSTV.

George, Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, Circle Media, is responsible for brand partnerships, affiliate relations, public relations, marketing, special events and music industry relations. George has held executive roles at the Country Music Association and most recently at the Academy of Country Music. She has also created artist partnerships and strategies for brands such as Walmart, 7-UP and Chrysler.

As previously announced, Circle will launch with 16 original shows. Available on Gray Television, the network will air in more than 50 markets, as well as on stations in markets such as New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Tampa and Detroit through a separate distribution agreement with CBS Television Stations.

Brandi Carlile, Dierks Bentley To Headline Atlanta’s Shaky Boots Festival

Brandi Carlile and Dierks Bentley are set to headline Atlanta’s Shaky Boots Festival, which will return for 2020 after a five-year hiatus.

Set for May 8-9 at Atlanta’s Central Park, the country festival will feature more than 20 acts on two stages, with no overlapping sets.

Friday’s lineup will include Carlile, along with John Prine, Alison Krauss, Gary Allan, Tanya Tucker, Colter Wall, Kendell Marvel, Natalie Hemby and more. Saturday’s lineup will include Bentley with Dwight Yoakam, Jamey Johnson, Morgan Wallen, Clint Black, Rita Wilson, Alex Hall, and more.

“I’m thrilled to be bringing back Shaky Boots Festival in 2020. I have always felt that Georgia needed a music festival that spans across the multiple genres embedded within country music, and Shaky Boots aims to do just that. Tenille Arts’ New Album Set For January

Tenille Arts has revealed some details about her upcoming album, Love, Heartbreak, & Everything in Between. The 12-song album, due out Jan. 10, 2020 on Reviver Records/19th & Grand Records, includes her current single, “Somebody Like That,” along with songs penned by Whitney Duncan, Derek George, Lizzy McAvoy, James Slater, and more. The album is available for pre-order beginning today.

“I’m so excited about this album,” said Arts. “It’s everything I’ve been through this past year, so I decided to title it ‘Love, Heartbreak, & Everything in Between.’ It’s four love songs, four breakup songs and four songs about everything else in life. I got to collaborate with new songwriters and producers, and I’m so proud of the creativity on this album.”
