 Randy “Baja” Fletcher

Randy “Baja” Fletcher will be honored with the inaugural CMA Touring Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual CMA Touring Awards (formerly known as the SRO Awards). CMA Touring Awards will be presented in Nashville at Marathon Music Works on Monday, Jan. 23. The evening will be hosted by CMA Awards winner Kristian Bush.

The CMA Touring Lifetime Achievement Award is for an individual who has accomplished the highest level in the country music field of touring.

“Over the course of his amazing career, Baja has worked with countless artists, concerts, and events. He has been an integral part of some of the genre’s most ambitious tours, the careers of some of Country Music’s biggest icons, and the Country community. The respect that everyone who has ever worked with Baja has for him proves that he is a perfect fit to be the first recipient of this Award,” said Sarah Trahern, CMA Chief Executive Officer.

Fletcher’s touring career began at the age of 17 with Bill Deal and the Rhondels. He traveled with the band up and down the East Coast on solo dates, as well as part of packaged shows of the era that included pop and Motown artists. In May of 1969, Fletcher’s career was briefly interrupted while he served in the US Army, including a tour of Vietnam. After his tour of duty, he returned to work with the Rhondels.

While working as a concert stage manager in 1973, he made a connection that would land him a job on the road with rock legends ZZ Top, with whom he would tour for much of the mid ‘70s, including the notable Worldwide Texas Tour. In 1978, he began a 10-year run as stage and production manager for Waylon Jennings. During this time he also co-toured with country artists Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Willie Nelson, and many more. In 1988 he began working with Randy Travis on Travis’ first headlining tour, whom he would continue with for five years.

When Travis took a break from touring at the end of 1992, Fletcher began working with then-newcomer duo Brooks & Dunn. For the next 18 years he served as production manager for their tours. Following his time with Brooks & Dunn, Fletcher opened the current chapter of his career in 2011 when he took on the role as production manager for Keith Urban, with whom he tours currently.

Rodney Crowell Announces New Album, Music Video, Tour Dates

rodneycrowellcloseties

Rodney Crowell is set to release Close Ties on March 31, supported with a music video in addition to an upcoming tour and Grammy Museum conversation and performance.

The 10-song album (track listing below) will be released via New West Records, and is Crowell’s first in over three years, following his duets project with Emmylou HarrisThe Traveling Kind. Jordan Lehning and Kim Buie co-produced Close Ties, which features a duet with Sheryl Crow and a vocal collaboration with John Paul White and Crowell’s ex-wife Rosanne Cash. “It Ain’t Over Yet” is the first time Crowell and Cash have appeared on record together since 1988, “It’s Such A Small World,” which was Crowell’s first chart-topping song.

Rolling Stone Country premiered the video for Crowell’s collaboration with White and Cash, “It Ain’t Over Yet,” which also features legendary harmonica player Mickey Raphael.

Close Ties is a loose concept record that ranges from songs about Crowell’s childhood in Texas (“East Houston Blues”) to songs about arriving in Nashville as a young songwriter (“Nashville 1972”) to songs about friends (the anguished “Life Without Susanna”) and lovers lost (“Forgive Me Annabelle”).

“I have declared my loyalty to Americana. It’s a hard category for people to get their heads around, or at least the terminology is. But all the people who represent it – Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle and more recent stars like John Paul White and Jason Isbell – share a common thread, and that thread is poet,” says Crowell. “Whether they are actual poets or their music exemplifies a poetic sensibility, generally speaking, the Americana artist shuns commercial compromise in favor of a singular vision. Which resonates with me.”

Close Ties will be available on compact disc, LP, and is now available for digital pre-order.

The Americana Music Association and the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles have also announced An Evening With Rodney Crowell on Monday, Jan. 23. The conversation and performance will kickoff the 2017 Americana Series at the Museum’s 200-seat Clive Davis Theater and will be moderated by Scott Goldman, Vice President of the GRAMMY Foundation and MusiCares. Old Dominion’s amazing 2016 included a successful partnership with major music festival Stagecoach. Recently, the album Meat & Candy was officially RIAA Gold certified and Old Dominion celebrated the No. 1, “Song For Another Time.”

BOTS Act Becomes Law

ticketmaster-ticketsPresident Obama has signed into law the BOTS (Better Online Ticket Sales) Act of 2016, which fights online scalpers. The law should make it easier for fans to buy tickets at face value.

The BOTS Act states:

This bill prohibits the circumvention of a security measure, access control system, or other technological measure on an Internet website or online service of a ticket issuer that is used to enforce posted event ticket purchasing limits or to maintain the integrity of posted online ticket purchasing order rules for a public event with an attendance capacity exceeding 200 persons.

The bill also prohibits the sale of or offers to sell an event ticket in interstate commerce obtained through such a circumvention violation if the seller participated in, had the ability to control, or should have known about the violation.

Billboard reports that the bill was introduced in February 2015 by U.S. Representatives Paul D. Tonko (D-N.Y.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.).

Brothers Osborne Perform Atop Tour Bus

brothers-osborne-on-tour-busBrothers Osborne literally “brought the house down” at the Fox Theatre in Hanford, California recently, when the venue’s roof collapsed minutes before they were scheduled to take the stage. Given this was the second such occurrence in two weeks, John and TJ Osborne came up with an alternate plan. They used their bus generator for power, moved equipment onto the roof through the emergency hatch and played for 30 minutes. See a video clip of the performance.

They will continue on The Dirt Rich Tour through the beginning of next year with upcoming stops in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New Orleans, as well as a show at Nashville’s Marathon Music Works on Jan. 18.

We both have made careers as outsiders, fighting for the opportunity to play and showcase the kind of music that we want to play. For this record, we got to write and create original music that I’m extremely proud of.”
